NEW YORK (AP) — The spouse of a presidential primary candidate has one of the hardest jobs in politics. Rick Perry's wife, Anita, learned that lesson when she made headlines for saying her husband was being "brutalized" for his faith. The wives, and one husband, of the 2012 contenders are all navigating a different path. They range from Mitt Romney's wife, Ann, who is a constant presence on her husband's campaign and has helped soften his image, to Herman Cain's wife, Gloria, who doesn't campaign at all.Spouses can cause problems for the candidates. Michele Bachmann's husband, Marcus, had to explain whether his Christian therapy business tried to "cure" gay patients. And Newt Gingrich had to defend his half-million-dollar line of credit at Tiffany's, presumably used for his third wife, Callista.
