AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine's upcoming "people's veto" referendum over Election Day registration reflects similar battles taking place in other states.Republican-backed legislation rolls back states' voter-access laws. While Republicans say those laws compromise the integrity of elections, Democrats say the targeted laws encourage voter participation.Among the seven other states that allow same-day voter registration, repeal bills were introduced in two this year — Montana and New Hampshire. The bill in New Hampshire failed to pass in the House. Montana's bill was vetoed by the governor. The year has also seen 13 states shortening other forms of early voting periods. In Maine, voters will decide Nov. 8 whether to repeal a new law that requires voters to register at least two business days before an election. Passage would restore same-day registration.
