U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz (CHAY'-fihtz) of Utah is expected to announce Monday he is seeking a third term in Congress instead of challenging incumbent and fellow Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch.
Two people who have spoken to the congressman tell The Associated Press that Chaffetz has decided against a Senate run, and another person with knowledge of the situation confirmed the information.
Chaffetz is planning to make his announcement Monday on the University of Utah campus.
He refused to comment in a text message to The Associated Press.
Chaffetz's decision comes after hinting for months that he planned to challenge Hatch. Chaffetz even held multiple town hall meetings earlier this month outside of his congressional district.
The 77-year-old Hatch is seeking a seventh term in Congress.
