A partial government shutdown is looming at week’s end

Mon, Mar 10, 2025 at 6:25 am

House Speaker Mike Johnson is looking to schedule a vote tomorrow (TUE) on the 99-page bill, with a view to Democrats responsible for a potential partial government shutdown. He’ll again need total GOP support to thread the needle. Congress must act by Friday midnight. when the current continuing resolution expires. House Republicans unveiled a spending bill Saturday that would keep federal agencies funded through September 30th. Trump praised the bill, posting on his Truth Social platform that Republicans have to “remain UNITED — NO DISSENT —.”

Trump trade war leads to bipartisan alliance in Kentucky

Sat, Mar 15, 2025 at 7:07 am

President Trump’s tariffs have led to a rare bipartisan alliance among Kentucky’s political leaders. The president’s escalating trade war prompted the European Union to announce a 50 percent tariff on American whiskey starting next month. As a result, Kentucky Democratic Governor Andy Beshear and Republican Senators Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul have bonded together to voice their disapproval of the White House tariffs policy. They point to potential job losses in their state’s bourbon industry, as well as higher costs for the American people.

House Republicans work to pass spending bill and avert government shutdown

Mon, Mar 10, 2025 at 6:36 am

The 99-page bill is certain to spark confrontation on Capitol Hill. It would provide a slight boost to defense programs while trimming nondefense programs below 2024 budget year levels. That approach is likely to be a nonstarter for most Democrats who have long insisted that defense and nondefense spending move in the same direction. Congress must act by midnight Friday to avoid a partial government shutdown. Speaker Mike Johnson is teeing up the bill for a vote on Tuesday despite the lack of buy-in from Democrats, essentially daring them to vote against it and risk a shutdown. He also is betting that Republicans can muscle the legislation through the House largely by themselves.
