LONDON (AP) — Daria Dmitrieva upstaged defending Olympic champion Evgeniya Kanaeva on Thursday as Russia went 1-2 in the first day of qualifying in rhythmic gymnastics.
Dmitrieva, who was a late add to Russia's Olympic roster after Alexandra Merkulova got hurt, finished with a score 57.80. Kanaeva, who also has won the last three world championships, was just behind (57.625) despite botching her hoop routine. Liubou Charkashnya of Belarus was third.
American Julie Zetlin was 22nd (48.20) after mistakes in both her ball and hoop routines.
Individual qualifying continues Friday with the ribbon and clubs. The top 10 advance to Saturday's all-around final.
