Police say a woman has reported that she was roughed up by comedian Jackie Mason.
New York Police Department Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Friday that a "female companion" had made the allegations against Mason.
The comedian has not been charged.
Kelly said the alleged altercation stemmed from a dispute.
Kelly said the NYPD was still trying to sort out the situation on Friday.
There was no immediate response to a phone message left with Mason's manager.
The 75-year-old comedian is known for one-man shows on Broadway like "Politically Incorrect."
