Officials in many countries have welcomed Francois Hollande's victory in the French presidential election. Here are some of their comments.
_GERMANY: France's most important foreign partner. Opposition leader Sigmar Gabriel hailed the victory of a fellow leftist. "That will not only change France, but it will help to finally give Europe a new direction." Chancellor Angela Merkel called Hollande to congratulate him and her foreign minister agreed to discuss the kind of growth pact that Hollande has championed.
_UNITED STATES: President Barack Obama said he looks forward to working closely with Hollande and his government on a range of shared economic and security challenges, and invited him to the White House this month.
_CHINA: President Hu Jintao sent Hollande a letter of congratulations, expressing Beijing's willingness to work with the new French government to build better relations.
_DENMARK: Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt, who holds the rotating EU presidency: "I look forward to a good and close cooperation with Francois Hollande. This is especially true in the efforts to bring Europe out of the crisis and put more focus on job creation and growth."
_UNITED ARAB EMIRATES: Its president, Sheik Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has sent a cable to Hollande wishing him success in his new job.
_EUROPEAN COMMISSION: Its president, Jose Manuel Barroso, said: "I know that I can count on the convictions and the personal commitment of Francois Hollande to advance European integration."
_ ROMANIA: "I hope with the election of President Hollande, Romania's voice can be heard better in France," Prime Minister-designate Victor Ponta. a Social Democrat, told parliament. He said he never wanted to see a repeat of images of President Nicolas Sarkozy shooing Romanian President Traian Basescu away with his hand _ as happened when relations were tense over an influx of Romanian immigrants to France.
_TUNISIA: President Moncef Marzouki said the new French president will "give new momentum" to relations with the former colony. He invited Francois Hollande to vist and "work together to firm relations between our two peoples and our two states."
