TARNISHED GOLD: Gold fell after the European Central Bank offered little hope that it will provide more stimulus money to help the region. It also was pressured by lackluster April retail sales and slower growth at U.S. service companies.
PROSPECTS DIM: Investors speculated that there is less of a chance that the Federal Reserve will launch another round of bond purchases if the European bank isn't taking similar action. That's because the economy is healthier in the U.S. than it is in Europe.
WINNERS, LOSERS: Prices for silver, copper and oil fell. Natural gas, wheat and corn rose.
