TROUBLE IN THE SKY: A Singapore Airlines A380 superjumbo jet en route to Europe had to shut down an engine and return to Singapore.
POWER SURGE: The plane, which was carrying 430 passengers to Frankfurt, Germany, was in the air about three hours when the crew reported a surge in one engine. Pilots shut down the engine and returned safely to Singapore using the three other engines.
LATEST WOE: The A380 has had a number of mechanical problems recently. In 2010, a Qantas A380 engine exploded in mid-flight over Indonesia, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing.
