A judge plans to rule Tuesday on the legality of a new state law requiring public employees to contribute 3 percent of their pay to the Florida Retirement System.
Ron Meyer, a lawyer for the Florida Education Association and other unions, said parties were notified Monday that Circuit Judge Jackie Fulford would issue her decision at a hearing in Tallahassee.
A ruling against the law would put a gaping hole in state and local government budgets, but the decision is expected to be appealed regardless of which way it goes.
The Legislature passed the law at the urging of Gov. Rick Scott as a cost-cutting measure.
It affects all state and county employees, including teachers and law enforcement officials, as well as many city workers.
