A national research group says Vermont is among the top-ranking states for the quality of its job subsidy programs.
The Washington-based group Good Jobs First says many states do not do a good job making sure that their job subsidy programs _ which set up incentives for companies to hire people _ get those subsidies only to companies that would not have done the hiring but for the incentives.
But the group ranks Vermont with North Carolina and Nevada as the states doing the best job making sure taxpayers get their money's worth from the job subsidy programs.
The District of Columbia, Alaska and Wyoming rated worst in the Good Jobs First rankings.
