DRUG PROBLEM: The FDA says Ben Venue Laboratories, the contract manufacturer for Johnson & Johnson's cancer drug Doxil, hasn't been maintaining equipment or promptly investigating defective products and other serious problems at its Bedford, Ohio, factory.
PATIENT IMPACT: The plant's ongoing quality problems led it to stop production of Doxil and all other drugs last month. Doxil, which has been in short supply since summer, is being rationed to 2,000 patients and more are on a waiting list.
THE FIXES: Ben Venue is working with the FDA to resolve problems. J&J is lining up another supplier.
