The president of The Boston Globe's largest employees' union has been ousted for allegedly violating financial rules.
A panel of five randomly selected Boston Newspaper Guild members on Wednesday found Daniel Totten had signed another union official's name to his own paycheck, improperly used a union credit card, and refused to submit timely expense reports.
Totten's profile rose last summer as the union negotiated with the paper's owner, The New York Times Co., over threats to close the Globe unless the guild accepted job and pay cuts. Some union members expressed dissatisfaction with the way he handled negotiations.
The union says in an e-mail Totten was expelled from the union and fined $254.
The Globe reports Totten refused to participate in the process but plans to appeal.
