Mariner Energy CFO Karnes steps down

Oil and gas producer Mariner Energy Inc. said Wednesday that its chief financial officer, John H. Karnes, is leaving the company to pursue other interests.

Jesus Melendrez, 50, Mariner's senior vice president of corporate development, will serve as acting finance chief and treasurer. The company also named Melendrez chief commercial officer, to more accurately reflect his role, it said.

Karnes, 48, joined Mariner three years ago. Melendrez has been with the Houston company for six years.

The company did not elaborate on Karnes plans.

Mariner said R. Cris Sherman will become chief accounting officer, effective Monday.

Sherman is a partner at the professional-services company Sirius Solutions LLLP, which he joined in 2004 after more than 20 years of experience in various accounting positions.
