Even in the aftermath of this victory in our counterterrorism efforts, Attorney General Holder has indicated that the Administration has every intention of closing the Guantanamo Bay detainment facility. This is not only irresponsible, but sends a message that the threat of terrorism has diminished when it hasn’t. The last thing we should be doing is closing this facility after it has proven to be an asset in detaining enemy combatants who relinquished vital information in the hunt for bin Laden. This is especially true when the alternative is moving them onto U.S. soil – at taxpayer expense – and jeopardizing our citizens’ safety.

The very measures pivotal in finding and killing bin Laden are the exact policies that have been consistently under fire by the Obama Administration. Thanks to Congress, most of the attempts to undermine our counterterrorism strategy have failed. However, it is important in light of this recent accomplishment to ensure that these policies remain in place and that national security remains a priority for our nation.

The ability to capture and detain terrorists at Guantanamo Bay must remain a vital part of the continued fight against terrorism and is necessary in order to identify and exploit key intelligence. As we have learned, terrorism is a nonconventional threat; one without borders, rationale, or a clear target. Our strategy cannot just be reactionary, but must be preventative, which is why the ability to capture and interrogate high value individuals is so significant.

The relief bin Laden’s death brought so many Americans and cherishers of freedom cannot be overstated, and those men and women who worked tirelessly over the past decade will forever have the gratitude of the American people. In turn, let us show our appreciation to them by supporting their efforts and continuing to uphold and implement the counterterrorism policies that will allow them to pursue those that threaten free people with fear, hate, and terror.
