According to the Dallas Morning News, fellow Texan and Republican Sen. John Cornyn has swallowed the Democratic bait. He supposedly told the paper's editorial board that he was "disappointed" in Gonzales. Cornyn is quoted as saying, "There's a perception that the White House is calling the shots."
Does Cornyn think the Clinton administration was "calling the shots" when 92 of 93 U.S. attorneys were unceremoniously dumped in 1993? How hard is it for a Republican senator, supposedly loyal to this president, to point that out to a bunch of editors at a newspaper?
Day after day, I hear from callers to my radio show positively disgusted with the unwillingness their Republican leaders have to stand up to the dirty tactics of today's Democrats. A junior high school student can understand the rank hypocrisy of this entire affair.
Gonzales is not doing anyone in this administration any favors by his mea culpa routine over a handful of routine firings. If he holds his head high and refuses to play the Democrats' game, he will remain a valuable asset to his boss, the president, and this country.
If not, he might as well pack his bags, tuck tail and go home.
