DEAR JOYCE: I need a second job to pay my bills. My boss has told us we must obtain prior approval before taking a part-time job or starting any outside employment or business venture. Can they do that? -- M.O.S.
Unless the "May I?" policy was in an employee-policy manual when you started, or spelled out in an agreement you signed, no, the boss doesn't have the legal right to shackle your earnings.
But let's get real. Your employer holds the aces, especially in this economy. If you moonlight without approval and are discovered, a ticked-off boss can find many ways to judge your work unsatisfactory and show you the door.
The better way: Convince your employer that moonlighting does the company no harm, and, in fact, may benefit it by bringing attention to your company's existence.
