Although employee benefits aren't setting new records this year, here's a smidge of good news: Announced job cuts fell to a 15-month low of 74,393 in June, which may mean that the worst of the economic crunch has passed. Ax-wielding is way down in retail, telecommunications, electronics, industrial goods, computers and consumer products.

DEAR JOYCE: During an interview, I know I'm supposed to make eye contact, but I feel like I'm staring. Is it OK if I look around occasionally? -- L.V

Within reason, look around but try to maintain eye contact as much as seems natural to show your interest in what the interviewer is saying. When you're uncomfortable, look at the bridge of an interviewer's nose instead of the eyes. Hold your gaze, but instead of staring, blink occasionally. Or turn away and quickly turn back to the eyes.

DEAR JOYCE: A stay-at-home mom, I could use extra income. Everyone says my baby is exceptionally beautiful. How could I find a modeling agent to represent her? -- N.Y.

Duplicitous baby model agents can use extra income, too. Just don't let them get it from you in upfront fees. Instead, pay them 10 percent to 20 percent commission on work they get you after you get paid for your baby's modeling job.

But you will have to think about start-up expenses: professional-quality photos and possibly videos. If you can't find an excellent photographer friend to help you out, be prepared for an investment of at least several hundred dollars. Shop around.
