DEAR JOYCE: Do you think using the "STAR" method of naming your accomplishments on a resume is a good way to go? -- B.Z.

STAR is an acronym representing four words. S identifies a challenging situation you faced. T means the task you were assigned. A defines the action you took. R is the result of your efforts.

This idea is expressed in other acronyms as well. "PAR," for example. P stands for problem. A means action you took. R relates to result.

The acronyms are helpful memory joggers to remind you to do more than merely list previous job duties, and instead to communicate why what you did mattered, and to suggest how your background achievements can apply to a new job.
