Key Senator Thinks Sotomayor Vote Represents Crossroads

In no way should she be allowed to sit as Judge.
She will not be impartial and will not adhere to a strict interpretation of the Law.
Empathy, sex, and race should NOT enter into her obligations as Judge.
Send her home.

Once she takes office, true interpretation of the Law is lost.

I cannot in good conscious approve as a Supreme Court Justice a woman that has made publically sexist and racist comments and expressed the desire to not follow the law.

Obama should be ashamed of himself for nominating this woman.

If it is customary to grant the President's nomination for Supreme Court approval then why do we even bother interviewing the candidate? To give our elected representatives an opportunity to posture on national TV? What's the point?

When the Republicans get these people out of office, is the only way they can get Waxman, Reid, and Pelosi out of office who are writing these insane bills. The Juduciary branch of government was designed to be the weakest of the three that constitute American government. The black robed are to strive to offer objective and accurate discernment of the current law.

The biggest problem I have with these hearings is that ALL the Senators are playing to the home folks.This is free campaign publicity.We would end up with better judges if this type of hearing was not televised.

She should be judged on those statements she made when she was not a nominee to the Court, not on what she said during the hearings, after months of woodshedding by the White House. We are long past the time to be concerned about so-called empathy considerations within the Supreme Court. For decades the court has failed to fulfill its constitutional role to uphold the constitution. The past six months of the current administration, we have seen the United States Constitution set aside hte rule of man exalted above the rule of law.

Anyone with even a superficial understanding of the United States’ history and Constitution realizes that there is a revolution underway. The current administration’s disregard for human liberty and the rule of law, as well as its oppressive taxation, are infinitely more egregious than anything suffered under the yoke of George III’s colonial rule.

All these republican senators lining up to vote against Judge Sotomayor confirmation in the face of easy confirmation for her are doing so to appease their right wing conservative base.

It is smart strategy for them because it is a foregone conclusion that Judge Sotomayor is going to be confirmed and seated on the USSC,
becoming the third woman and first hispanic to do so despite their objections. Democrats hold
healthy leads in demographic among hispanics and women in most major polls at any rate.

You have pointed your finger at the problem. Too many pols are afraid of doing what is basically sound because they have been brainwashed by "political correctness". If they would find their souls and courage and put in the needed effort to make decisions based on fact, historical precedent, and laws, they would find themselves to be in a much stronger and more respected position. Hispancs are not a homogenous group. Sotomayor is of Puerto Rican descent, which (of course)makes her different from someone of Mexican descent. Both cultures are very different and each view each other as different. This is true for all other parts of South and Central America. Thus, not every "hispanic" sees Sotomayor as one of them. They see her as a Puerto Rican. For many hispanics, I have been told, that is not necessarily a good thing.

Keep coming back to this notion that Hispanics are something akin to how they view their own black voters, a mindless rabble that votes based on "monkey see, monkey do" politics. If Republicans don't support this Puerto Rican racist, somehow the Guatemalans and Mexicans and Chileans and Columbians and Salvadorans and Argentinos will turn Democrat forever.

Senator Sessions is correct that Ms. Sotomayor's personal story is compelling. He is also correct that having an Hispanic Supreme Court Justice would be a good thing. He is also correct that Ms. Sotomayor on the Supreme Court is not a good thing. It is not racist to to disagree with someone's policies, past judicial decisions or judicial philosophy. It is racist to say someone is unqualified because of their skin color. It is also racist to say you should vote for someone just because of their skin color.
