These quotes are from my interview Wednesday with Bloomberg View's Jonathan Alter, the transcript of which is here.
Rev. Jeremiah Wright is relevant again, and about to get even more relevant, and it will be hard for the MSM which loved the 50-year old story of alleged bullying at Cranbrook to ignore the details of what happened 50 months ago. Alter is a strong supporter of Obama and a very smart guy, and he knows this re-emergence of Wright is very bad news for the president. His dismissal of the story is a cue for every other MSM lefty.
Too late. The reverend gave some on the record interviews and a tape recorder was running. A Superpac has noticed. News of a planned independent expenditure timed for the Democratic convention will cause shudders from 1600 Pennsylvania to the City of Big Shoulders and Really Big Egos.
Watch for even more panic from Chicago as Mitt Romney's April fundraising numbers stun and then scare the geniuses who timed the president's transparently political conversion on same sex marriage.
Is Joe Biden the chief strategist of this circus? Time to throw him under the bus and put in Hillary. Let me show you a column I wrote for Politico in the summer of 2009. The dumping of Joe Biden was as easy to foresee as the failure of the stimulus and sustained unemployment above 8%. Alter thinks the Chicago gang thinks such a move would indicate panic. The panic flag is already hoisted.
The emergence of another round of super-billionaires from Silicon Valley this week will not help the president, because most of the Facebookers will be Obamians, just like the Solyndra gang. When will the 99% figure out that the people they really loathe, not the 1% but the .01% percent, are mostly the presidents' friends from Hollywood and the Bay Area, and they aren't exactly pumping up the coffers of the food banks and the Salvation Army. The middle class --the independent voters struggling to keep their heads above water-- how will they feel about another round of the Virtual Robber Barons who will join George Clooney at his next big bash for the president?
The perfect political storm is brewing, and the hurricane of change from 2010 may turn out to have been just a Category 2 with 2012 looking more and more like a Category 5.
Here's a link to Mitt Romney's campaign and another dozen key campaigns and causes. The small $5 and $50 donations have been rolling in for six weeks, and this is just my little effort to encourage small donors to join the super pacs that are out there. Some in the middle class are digging even deeper, giving up $200 or $500 because they know the country is in terrible shape and leaderless. Fund-raising and organizing for center-right candidates and especially Team Romney is exploding across the country, and for the obvious reason.
There is genuine fear for the future of the kids emerging from college to find no jobs, and the astonishing success of a few IPOs does nothing to lessen the dismay and sometimes the bitterness of parents and students who either cannot get into state colleges despite working extremely hard or who emerge from private ones with six figure debts and no path to repayment because the jobs are all gone.
Meanwhile Mitt Romney is doing the smart thing --reaching out to everyone in new media, calmly repeating the same message of hope for the future if voters simply put responsible people in positions to tame the government's massive overreach and cut back the entitlements to manageable levels.
Much of Romney's messaging isn't even visible to Manhattan-Beltway media elites. When the GOP nominee talks to HotAir's Ed Morrissey or Townhall's Guy Benson, he is connecting with a lot of the country that simply skips over what the Sunday show prophets have to say. The Manhattan-Beltway media elite had the same sex marriage thing all figured out, thought that North Carolina would once and for all prove what they have been asserting about the tide of history. When the tide turned out to be an undertow their shock was obvious and they did what the opinion elites always do, they ignore the data and told themselves they were right anyway. Some folks didn't get the North carolina message like would-be Los Angeles mayor Rick Caruso, so they will pay a political price with quiet, devout faith-based voters who aren't anti-gay in the least but whose limit for being told they are bigots has been reached.
Backlash can be a...well, you know.
Thus we proceed towards a showdown in November between two very different visions of the country.
In Obama's world a very small group of very well-connected, very rich, very left-wing elites decide how the misery will be shared out.
In Romney's world we go back to doing things the old fashioned way: Leaving people alone to make their way and their dreams in a free enterprise system that rewards hard work, risk and saving.
The polls show the appeal of the latter. And so does the surge of small donors to Romney.
