I still hear my father talking of things to come when I was a teen into my early twenties. I now realize his insight was on the mark. He was the product of the greatest generation seasoned with the knowledge that history repeats itself in the worst ways.

Whenever I asked my 90 year old mother about her childhood, growing up on a homestead in the Rocky Mountains, she said there wasn't anything to tell. But when we got her together with her brother, one year younger than she, the memories and stories started flowing. Their parents wed in Missouri, she 16 and he 19, and moved to Colorado where they started a ranch in the mountains on present-day Air Force Academy land.
While he tilled the fields and tended the animals, she built their first log home. Our whole family treasures the stories my mother and uncle could relate once they got started. They fed off each other, each reminding the other of some long-forgotten event or adventure they had experienced as young children growing...

For 2k my wife and I put together a family time line going back to the Births of our Grandparents and Great Granparents in the 19th Century. We pegged family births, deaths, marriages, to World Events like Custer's Last Stand, The Wright Brothers' First Flight, the Titanic Sinking, Development of Penicillian etc. Really put things in context.

journals on the market that ask various questions about ones childhood, experiences, favorites, etc. Thomas Kinkade has nice ones out for Mothers,Fathers,Grandmothers and Grandfathers. I bought these some years ago and gave them to my parents to fill in for my son. My father was somewhat hesitant saying it looked like alot of work! I told him he didn't have to do it all at one time...just do one or two questions a day. I am so happy I did this. My mother is gone now and my father is 91 years young. What a treasure to read them now!

are older people and the younger people willing to listen to them. I have beento DC 3 times over the past three months and the crowds have looked like an ATT retirement reunion for the most part.

My dad is 76, step dad 77, and Mom 73. They know a lot more about a great many matters than I do. All three had what can be considered impoversihed childhoods, but they don't see it that way at all. What a shift in mentality.

My grandfather was gassed during WW I and eventually died in 1979 from the stomach cancer that developed from it. When I was in high school, he told stories about his Army years, but more about training our troops for WW II than about his youth during WW I.

Sometime after he died, my dad found Grandpa's journals from WW I and offered them to me. I had read Vera Brittain's A Testament of Youth and imagined receiving journals that would give me the American equivalent to Vera's story.

The journals were just one-liners that said, "9/27/17 - Went into town with Joe to see the girls." That's it. I don't even know if he was stateside or in Europe when he went to see the girls.

I was blessed that had a Great Grandfather and a Great Aunt, the oldest of 4 sisters live until I was a young man. It was only by then that I was smart enough to begin to ask. I would hope you would be that lucky too.

2009 was supposed to bring hope and change, but has brought nothing but staggering debt, empty promises, and corruption on a scale never seen before. Health care "reform" has been conducted behind closed doors, forced through two houses of congress, and will forever change the relationship between citizen-state.

Dad is 96 now, no longer physically able to do the things he did with me when I was a child. But there was no mental slowness in him today. I received a book about the US Navy in Viet Nam (my war) from my son and that prompted him to question his grandfather, my dad, about WW II. What we got was a fascinating story about some very scared young men on an island called Bougainville, a place most people have never heard of, in the spring of 1944. He spent two Christmas Days on other islands where the temp was 100 degrees and told us about all that as well. Nothing by Tom Clancy can compare to the real thing we heard today.

My grandma use to say - steal with your eyes and your ears and I stoled a great deal from my elders - I listened to their stories and I have passed those stories down to my kids and now to my grandkids - I figured by telling my children and grandkids these stories their great-grandparents still live. My one grandson Gregg is totally enthralled by the story of long decease great Uncle Charlie who fought under Patton - Uncle Charlie is bigger then life to little Gregg. Wonderful stories of very great people.

As you're writing one thing. three or twenty other things come to mind ... things you hadn't thought about in years and years.

It's also very cathartic and healing.

I had more fun writing my 210 pages which covered part of my life, the highlights, but I remembered everything as I wrote. Actually, it flooded back in as I wrote. I didn't realize just how busy my life has been and how productive. It gave me a chance to express what was important to me and when. I tried to draw parallels with today's world and recount the history of the people who preceded me as had been told to me. Through the years, I had always wished that my grandparents had written their histories so I might know more about the people I would never meet. With two children, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren to date, there is always the chance that no one will ever read it, but, as I promised myself long ago,...
