I am no friend of Islam, as I have read enough history to have an informed understanding of its past and its practices. BUT that doesn't mean I think it wise to create as many enemies needlessly as we would create if we handed the bad guys such a useful propaganda coup.

We're basically a Judeo-Christian country that is TOLERANT of other religions. That does NOT give them the right to come here and dictate to us how we should conduct our affairs.

In reply to the right wing denunciations of me: We live in a pluralistic society. Muslims are a part of our country. To treat all Muslims as potential terrorists and denounce their religion goes against the tradition of religious tolerance on which our government is based. It also undermines any efforts on the part of our government to make headway with people in countries such as Iraq or Afghanistan. Furthermore, Muslims who belong to our military deserve the same respect and appreciation as any other soldier.

I read in a popular book once: "He who calls himself mine, but keepeth not my Commandments is a Liar and the Truth is not in him." That's a quotation from a guy named Jesus.

A lot of people have a copy of that Book on a shelf somewhere. The point is that ANYONE can call themselves an adherent of God and his Law but if he doesn't keep to the Law then God doesn't think he is a Christian. Phelps is NOT a Christian, no real adherent of God's Law would so shamelessly and brutally attack families grieving at the grave of a loved one.

That is the bottom line on who IS and who ISN'T a Christian.

I know many Muslims who are offended by radical Islam. Many Muslims (especially Turkish Muslims) do not adhere to the violence of the radical Islamists. They want nothing to do with these people.

Franklin Graham is a godly man who is steadfast in this faith. He believes the Bible is the inherent Word of God. He speaks the truth. He runs an effective ministry that helps the poor in the name of Jesus.

The fact that many Jews don't know the contents of their own (partial) Bibles (Old Testament does point to the Messiah, His sufferings/death/resurrection, and even the specific date when He would be in Jerusalem--so Old Testament actually teaches ALL of Michael's specific points) shows that your reasoning is entirely bakvas!

A factoid--it is also the ONLY religion to have been declared as having "worse historical record" than another religion which was also (and personally) oppressive to the writer--specific reference is to B.R. Speaking from a Christian perspective -- the perspective from which one would normally expect a pastor like Franklin Graham would speak -- of course Islam is evil. From a Christian perspective, any religion (or secular dogma, for that matter) that tells people that Jesus Christ is not the Son of God and didn't die on the cross for your sins is by definition evil because it steers people away from their only hope of going to heaven. Even a religion that makes someone a better person overall is evil if it eventually lands that person in hell because it turns them away from Christ -- kind of like fattening the goose before the kill.

Any religion that threatens others because they do not comply is evil.

Any religion that says 50% of the human race is subservient to the other 50% is evil.

Any religion that believes in "honor killings" and mutilation for "maintaining faithfulness" is evil.

You aren't saying what we want to hear + We don't want to lend credence to your opinion = censorship. Christianity has been condemned at every turn with no fear of alienating them or turning them into enemies. Why? Because we don't slit the throats of our detractors. Regardless of any opinion you may hold about Islam, it can be held that, even in it's most "liberal" form, it is an oppressive religion. It holds a tightly strict belief on such things as a womans function (basically, servitude), homosexuality (beatings at best, death at worst), and adherence to teachings and practices (strict) to name a few. Beyond that, to disallow the religious practice of a known leader (and the son of a religious icon) on the basis of his belief is censorship of opinon or political views. When was the last time a liberal or a muslim was censored for spouting any of their outlandish drivel? I looked up the history of the National Day of Prayer. It goes back to the 1950's when concerned Christians began work to make it a presidential proclamation. That didn't happen until the 1980's, under Ronald Reagan. I'm not sure when it started happening, but instead of distinctly Christian, somebody began trying to slip in a little PC here and there, until you have the ARMY disinviting a promiment evangelical from participating, based on his TRUE comments about another religion. When did the NDP committee turn over control to the US government?

Would it anger anyone if the Reverend Jeremiah Wright was permitted to pray at the Pentagon? Given the statements he's made in the past, it probably would infuriate rather a large number of folks. Politically, it would be a pretty dumb move, wouldn't it? A slap in the face.

Well, it would be a pretty dumb move militarily to prompt even more anti-American sentiment among Muslims, FOR NO GOOD REASON, by allowing Rev. Graham to pray at the Pentagon after having made the public statement he has made. I have no problem with criticizing Muslim societies justifiably -- over institutionalized ill-treatment of women, for instance -- but this is simply ridiculous! It would be foolish and pointless to give the bad guys yet more useful...
