As a physician, I think it's ridiculous to think that society would take pity on the erosion of physician's income and status. Physicians still do well and few take pity on those that make more money than they do! The need for tort reform, in my opinion, is the elephant in the room. If, for example, the consequence of improperly fixing a washing machine was $10 million, then, would anyone be surprised if it cost more to fix washing machines? I get it, that people aren't washing machines but at some point, medical malpractice impacts on the cost of health care. Would I suggest that malpractice be eliminated? Grudgingly, no. Doctors are human and we also respond to both carrot and stick motivation. Malpractice awards on the order...

The split here is not between lawyering and doctoring. In fact, those of you who would bash lawyers and "litigation" can help yourself to an autocratic country of your choice. A robust legal system is a hallmark of a free society - access to courts and the ability to penalize the wicked no matter their wealth or power is fundamental to a nation of equals.

The true split here is between those who think EVERYTHING should be monetized and that the pursuit of profit is the greatest good to which humans may strive, and those who disagree.

If we want to keep our citizens insured, under proper medical supervision, while pursuing new technology and medical innovation, we have the resources to do that. But...

It's unsettling to read so many anti-semitic comments in response to Dennis Prager's columns--some that don't even deal with the subject matter. When I first became a Townhall reader, I thought it was just an anomaly, but it has been pretty consistent every time he submits an article.

I'm a Christian and believe that the "firstfruit is holy, the root and branches are holy," all referring to Israel. Most European legal systems have two general controls on malpractice suits. One is that the loser pays for the winner's legal costs as well as their own. The other is that suits are generally limited to actual damages and a small punitive award.

Are there Medical claims limits/tort limits in Canada and other European countries that have nationalized health care?
Note that in the Us Military System...Doctors/ Providers are protected by the Farres (sp?) Doctrine..which prevents service members form suing...malpractice is still punishable... The reason for this policy is that Military Pay would not be sufficient to cover the malpractice insurance premiums .even if an entire year's salary was spent just on malpractice insurance..

I see this as a real problem for Doctors/etal.under Obama Care...

Why not toss in "Law care" with the health care bills? Legal expense is more expensive than anyone can afford and I think we are entitled to it! If we could cap every lawyers salary at say, 90 G per year, there would be no incentive to chase ambulances and sue every doctor they could. In turn, if one was smart enough to be a doctor, there would be more incentive to go to medical school than go to law school. I know this country would be a better place with a few less lawyers (Obama included).
