Will Congress pass Obamacare by the end of the year?

Contrary to continuing media propaganda, the 2006 election and the killing of the Senate "comprehensive" immigration bill do NOT prove that anti-amnesty is a loser for Republicans. The Democrats who won in 2006 campaigned with Republican-rhetoric messages calling for border security, and they kept their promises in the decisive cloture vote on June 28.

Republican Senators voted "no" by a 3-to-1 majority (37 to 12), and they were conspicuously joined by three new Democratic senators who defeated incumbent Republicans in November after criticizing the failure of the U.S. government to stop the flow of illegal immigrants across U.S. borders. They were Sens. Jim Webb, D-Va., Jon Tester, D-Mon., and Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., who said simply, "I like to keep my word."

The Senate bill, so aggressively lobbied by President George W. Bush and Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., didn't even get a simple majority, much less the 60 votes it needed to proceed to vote on the bill itself. Meanwhile, the House Democrats who won in 2006 after making border-security promises were equally resistant to establishment and media lobbying.

A good example is Rep. Nancy Boyda, D-Kan., who pulled off one of the most surprising 2006 upsets against an incumbent Republican. She called President Bush's just plain "wrong" and asserts that "most Americans oppose the Senate's wrong-headed reforms; it's just Kansas common sense."

The pro-amnesty crowd is now engaging in ugly name-calling and blaming its defeat on talk radio. In fact, talk radio merely gave voice to the grass roots, thereby enabling a "great victory for the American people who demanded to be heard," as Sen. David Vitter, R-La., said at the post-vote press conference. Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., who was out front first with specific objections to the Senate bill, pointed out how phony it was to call the Senate bill "reform." He said it would result in only a 13 percent reduction in the invasion of illegal immigrants and would actually double the number of legal immigrants.

The arguments against the details of the bill were so powerful that its advocates were reduced to repeating the mantra, "Something is better than nothing." How dumb do the elite think the American people are? The Senate bill was far worse than doing nothing.

In addition to the 700-page bill's costly details and Kennedy-crafted loopholes, objections included the fact that the bill was written by a handful of "deal makers" behind closed doors without hearings or the usual committee process, who then limited amendments and debate, and demanded that the bill be passed only hours after the text was made public.

Among the many amendments that the deal makers rejected or did not allow to be considered were amendments to prohibit felons from getting Z visas, to require completion of background checks before Z visas are issued, and to ensure that drunk drivers are not given legal status. Republicans found it especially obnoxious that all negotiations had to go through Kennedy, the architect of 40 years of failed immigration policy.

Bush's duplicity about building a fence destroyed his credibility. As Sen. Elizabeth Dole, R-N.C., said, the American people "want proof, not promises." Just before the 2006 election, Bush arranged a photo-op to show himself signing the Secure Fence Act, but since then he has refused to build it. The Senate bill he was lobbying for would have cut in half the 700 miles of fencing called for in the 2006 law he signed.

Bush likes fences for himself and keeps a high fence around the White House. When he met at the Group of Eight summit in Germany, he was protected by a welded-mesh fence, topped with barbed wire and video cameras, which began in the water and wound its way through the countryside until it ended back in the water.

Bush has just sent 120 of our best-trained Border Guards to Iraq to help the Iraqis with their border enforcement. With much fanfare last year, Bush sent some National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, but they were not allowed to do anything except observe and are now scheduled to be sent to Iraq and Afghanistan.

The voter revolt that killed the Senate bill proves that the American people reject amnesty. Now it's time to terminate George W. Bush's "silent amnesty," under which he has allowed at least 700,000 illegal immigrants to enter the United States every year of his administration to either take jobs in the underground economy without paying taxes, or to take jobs using a fake or stolen Social Security number and receive massive social benefits paid for by U.S. taxpayers, or to roam our streets as conduits for illegal drugs or to participate in criminal gangs.

Hey Michael Medved..
...did you read this?

President Bush's "Read my lips" moment: "See ya at the signing."

Close the border
Can't argue with one thing, Phyllis- so what do we do about it??? The majority of citizens have made it clear we want the border closed to protect our country. At the next opportunity, we we will vote out any politician who fails to act as we demand. However, RIGHT NOW- how do we get the fence-building going? It can't wait another year. And how do we get rid of the liar, Chertoff, who claims it's an "engineering issue." Ridiculous!

And why can't we demand that troops which have been in Europe for 50 years be brought home to defend us, rather than the French et al?

WHERE'S THE FENCE?

Good Article
More than enough has already been said, now we must do.

It's going to be necessary to get legislation passed to get it done, but just like with drugs, you're going to have to cut off the need before you will ever cut off the demand.

Entitlements and jobs encourages illegals to come here. Businesses are willing to break the law to take advantage of cheap labor.

If we can't set up a system for laborers to work legally, than we are going to have to jail those who are hiring illegals.

If a fence can't stop the flow, than we are going to have to cut off the demand.

It's just plain not right for tax payers to keep subsidizing businesses who want cheap labor.

What difference does it make if I have to pay more for an American worker to pick my head of lettuce at grocery store, or pay the Mexican with higher taxes.

To say that an American worker won't pick a head of lettuce because the work is to hard is an insult, but if that's true, we've got a bigger problem with our welfare system than I thought.

5 check marks
on an excellent column.

Read my companion piece "Where's The Fence?", posted on my blog last week, by clicking my name, and learn more about how Bush and his minion Chertoff are flat-out refusing to do their jobs by refusing to build the legally mandated border fence, and essentially holding the country's security hostage to their demands for amnesty for illegal aliens.

They are showing their comtempt for the Voice of the People and their constitutionally mandated duties.

The Dems keep talking about impeachment, but keep harping on the wrong issue, the Iraq war.

If they want to impeach Bush, HERE'S the issue they should use, handed to them on a silver platter: malfeasance and misfeasance in office, a clear "high crime" or "misdemeanor" under the Constitution.

A simple solution
to the illegals problem ---- severally fine any business using illegal employees. No more food stamps, free medical, free education, welfare, etc., etc. Take away all the free stuff and jobs and the illegals will stop coming.

Schlafly
Very good article. It was so good and comprehensive I wanted to pick you up and kiss you.

Marcite also makes one of the best points..and thats how do we get them to start enforcing this and build the Dam# fence. I read an article somewhere in the last few days about this fund they have that has 580 million in it. This fund is one that they put money in cause they have people file with ITCN numbers that attach a W-2 to with a SSN number but cant be verified. Well this fund should be used to build the dm fence since these illegals cant prove that they deserve these taxes back and it would help alot. This way the fence could be built and then the employeers cracked down on.

The fact that they wont do anything now cause we defeated their run to get the NAU and the SPP going is a statment of treason. Because we didn't, as Americans, vote to sell this country and eliminate all borders, we should not be entilted to having our country secured and the invaders put out. One thing I saw yesterday, thats not on his web site now, is an interview or press talk from a member of government where he stated that more attacks were comming and that we would see it was necessary to protect our country. This was on http://www.Prisonplanet.com and I went to find the article but could not again. The article as stated by the writter said that the person that made that statment sounded like he had foreknowledge of something going on that we didn't. This is another ploy to let this government allow attacks, since they wont do their job, and then tell us we need to accept anything they admit as policy after such actions so they can defend America(LOL..its just to take more rights away as the Patriot Act did). Well their not defending America now and they want attacks on our soil, perpertraited by them (covert US agencies), to make us accept the NAU and the SPP. Mark my words you will see it happen and any bills they intorduce will include the NAU, the SPP. and the RFID chipping among a lot of other stuff, including joining the EU.

We the American public have spoken and asked the politicians across the land to defend this country and make it better by ridding us of the illegals, and we can do it with the fence and current laws that allow us to fine employers and deport the illegals. In Arizona, a new law will require by Jan, 1st 2008 all employers to prove their employee's status or get fined and closed for a period of time. The companies are fightning it saying it's unfair..but who is it unfair to? Certainly not the American worker.

I saw Larry the Cabel Guy on Comedy Central last night talking about these DWI stops and he stated that the government was saying they could not find and deport these illegals....LOL..Then he said I should tell them 5000 of them are in front of me. It was funny but it was true. They catch all these illegals at DWI and Click it stops but they aren't allowed to do anything about it. I live in New Mexico and they have just as many illegals draining our state as in Arizona and this state wont do anything about it.

How can we put the pressure on the government now, before they stage another attack on our soil to get their agenda passed while we get invaded and go broke. I have watched some of the La Raza videos where they claim were dieing out and that they need to raise up and take this country back. Thats a declaration, from terrorists in our country now illegally, that the government just ignores. They want this to come to violence so the President can claim Martial Law and pass anything he want's including the NAU and the SPP. How can we make them responsible and enforce our laws now?

Bush - brain dead on illegal immigration
No question about that.
The more I thnk about the sheer arrogance and stupidity of Bush and his open borders/no enforcement/give-a-free-pass-to-Mexican-lawbreakers politburo of Mel Martinez and Guiterez, the angrier I get.
If this fool can't even see that allowing millions of uneducated, anti-American, rabid Mexican nationalists to invade our country every year, is an unmitigated disaster for America, the Republican Party and for democracy in this country, then it makes you wonder about Bush's other decisions while in power.
Never in the history of this country, has any president ever gone out to his way to totally alienate the very people who voted him into power, totaly ingnore their views, and set out to destroy the party that put him in the White House.
The earlier the do-nothing-to-secure-our-borders Bush is out of the White House, the better for this country.
Right now, secure the borders/crackdown on illegals trumps any other issue as far as I am concerned.
What the hack is the use of our children dying in Iraq to protect Iraq's borders, while the stupid Bush keeps our own borders open and allows murderers, rapists and drug dealers from Mexico to invade our country any time they want?

BIGbelly
"Hey Phyllis I say it's time we start leaning on Chertoff to get the ball rolling on the Secure Fence Act"

Chertoff is part of the roblem.
He has no buiness running a public toilet, let alone Homeland Security.
This loser spends most of his energy manufacturing reasons why the wall cannot be built(including his ridiculous "can't find engineers" rant), than actually doing anything to build it.
Not only should Chertoff be sacked at once, he shoud be put in prison for delibrate criminal negligendce, and for culpability in the deaths of thousands of Americns that continue to be murdered, raped and assaulted by Mexican illegals every single year.

Amnesty is not a solution at all
America, and perhaps the world, is almost assured of having a serious energy crisis in the next 2 decades - one largely centered around oil. Maybe it will be an embargo from an Iran that may someday, through unchecked regional terrorism, control almost all mideast oil, or maybe the energy crisis will be driven by world demand, or maybe a domestic attack on our refinery system (which is anything but invulnerable). We are talking about SEVERE oil shortages.

Whatever the cause, the crisis will come, and it will be severe. When that happens, some crops, maybe many, will rot in the field, or simply never be planted. There will be starvation, perhaps world-wide. There will be problems heating homes in winter.

So what did our leaders want to do to prepare for this problem? Add 100 million more users of gasoline, and 100 million more mouths to feed. THis government has always been about short-term thinking and short term solutions. THe AMerican people saw this, although they probably still do not recognize the depth of the problems we will face. One thing is for sure, with climate change on the way, the one thing we do not want to do is add 100 million new AMericans into the equation.

Our Senate

Swoop by my blog (click on my handle) to see how the liberals celebrated Independence Day out in the land of Red Nanny Pelosiovich.

Please Roar Again
I wish the populace would roar again and do something about contaminated and noxious food, toiletries, and drugs coming in from other countries. Yahoo News today 7-10 says that China has now executed (put to death!) the head of its equivalent of the FDA for taking payola in exchange for permitting unsafe drugs (some of which can easily find their way into what's in our drugstores). And just about every day recently has brought new news of poisonous catfood and toothpaste and contaminated seafood, etc, being marketed here.

As a consumer unprotected by our free-market leaders, who apparently will allow anything if a profit can be taken from it, I have begun my own personal family-protection program by refusing to buy any food protect from China---but you can't always tell where it's from, because only certain foods must name the country of origin, thanks to powerful lobbies in Washington. Also, it seems that China sometimes lies on labels---so if the frozen shrimp package says "Thailand", could that really mean "China"? Reading the list of ingredients doesn't always help either, since such blanket descriptors as "stabilizers" can mean anything and, in any case, I'm not a food chemist. It's turning out that generic ingredients imported from bad countries can be used even by US manufacturers of our food, vd the Chinese gluten that thickened the catfood---why not the gluten that thickens Campbell's soup?

I have never been a health-nut food shopper confining myself to farmers' markets and "organic" stores and have enjoyed the fun and variety of ethnic markets. Now, I feel like it's time to be more cautious.

I am angry that our pro-business government is not protecting American consumers. The argument that the free market will sort everything out in the end is just enraging---Chinese products have already killed pets in the United States and human children in Haiti and Panama. These kids and Cocker Spaniels are not coming back to life once the free market gets hold of the problem, if it ever does.

I am a liberal. Most on townhall are conservatives. Are we in agreement here that our food supply needs better protection from foreign opportunists?

I Want My Fence!
Where's my fence? Until we fence the Southern border, no government politician can be taken seriously about border enforcement. A Border Fence is Square One.

Lilly actually makes sense, for once, that we need to tighten inspection of tainted and poisonous food stuffs coming in from China. But she's wrong in thinking that American business wants tainted consumer products. American business are big losers every time that China tries to pawn this garbage on us. It's already illegal for them to do so. The culprit here is not American importers being swindled, but the Chinese who are pushing their damaged goods on us.

China should never have been given Most Favored Nation trade status. They have shown that they are not a trustworthy trading partner.

Anti-amnesty NOT a loser for Republicans
I appreciate Ms. Schlafly's clear thinking on this. I have lately read conservative editorial writers who are worried that now Republicans are going to be viewed as anti-immigrant, as if we should have endorsed bad policy for political gain. Isn't that what citizens complain about all the time from politicians?

If Republicans would get over being afraid of criticism from the Left, they would discover that most people favor the common sense of true conservative thinking, as was proved from the revolt against the amnesty bill.

defending the US borders
the only way that there will be any effective defense of our nation's sovereignty, as expressed in our internationally recognized borders, is if the US Public shouts as loudly and as long NOW as it did leading up to the recent "comprehensive giveaway" votes. There can be no perceived let up least the traitors and do-nothings on "the Hill" and in the Whitehouse continue operations and lies as usual awaiting the furthering of the crisis in hopes that it will force the US public to adopt their, and their special interests, lunacy on immigration, legal and illegal when they utter the words, "see, we told you we needed to do something on "comprehensive giveaways."
Demand a southern border fence NOW; let Washington know you want a Federal construction contract for the entire 700 plus miles awarded NOW and in it a specified completion date of no longer than 7 months. Let Washington know that you want the maximum number of Border Patrol agents legislated already to be hired, trained, and on duty by the end of this year. Let Washington know that you want our seaports of entry secured, as well as, our airports of entry. Make Washingotn understand that the DEFENSE of the USA is their primary CONSTITUTIONAL DUTY.

Tom Tancredo will build the fence
Congressman Tom Tancredo is running for President and will secure the border, build the fence and enforce the law. What a concept!
Check him out at http://www.teamtancredo.org

Amnesty
It scares me when President Bush agrees with Uncle Teddy Kennedy. Backroom deals with immoral Senators will not help. The American People have spoken loudly to the Arrogance of power and said "NO F...ing Way" to giving away America to Criminals. We are sick of a self serving and corrupt Congress that uses family and lobby priveliges to pad their fat wallets at our expense. This is a warning shot. 08 may be a housecleaning in congress for these frauds! Grandmaster Ro

It's Not Over Yet
The success of the outcry to delay the amnesty bill remains to be seen. I venture we will see this bill again. It will be essentially the same as now. It will pass with slight of tongue and unmitigated gall from both republicans and democrats, all of whom lean left. The lean left because that is where the votes are, even among those who profess conservation for everyone else.

These puppets are not calling the shots. They do what they are told to do for money. If I buy 3 out of 4 or all the candidates, I don’t care which one you choose. In the big picture, you lose. So wait till it is over before the singing begins please.

M Sederoff
I concur. I lived around Hispanics at my last installation and THEY DO NOT like the illegals anymore than we do. One they take jobs from them and two, they commit crimes tenfold in Hispanic neighborhoods.

Thompson/Tancredo 2008.

The TNT Connection!

We don't need no stinking fence......
If a company is caught hiring illegals, the CEO or highest officer or owner or individual goes to jail. No options, appeals, etc. Couple this with a hefty fine and a prohibition from bidding on government contracts for five years and this problem of illegal immigration would be solved in 6 months.

The criminal element; deportation upon capture no
muss no fuss. Just a quick ride to the border.

We wouldn't want a fence to keep them from scurrying back south of the border.

Do we have the guts, under the tenets of political correctness and political expediency to implement such a program.......????

Hustler
" It will pass with slight of tongue and unmitigated gall from both republicans and democrats, all of whom lean left"

This amnesty bill will not pass, disguised or not.
The closer we get to the 2008 elections the more the congressmen, especially in the House, are going to run away from this bizare LaRaza joke of a bill.

Illegals
How very interesting that on last night's news we heard that the number of aliens that have entered the US this past year is down 26%. Sure I believe that what the Bush administration is doing is working!!! I sure do. What fairy tale are they going to think we will believe next???

SOME SENATORS DID NOT LISTEN
some of them will try to push that "double numbered" bill into our throats - piece by piece, stealthily....

Senate listened like a mule
they may have long ears, but still pay no attention.

Sometimes you gotta hit a stummorn mule over the head and drag him by the reigns.

Does that make him listen?

Or just make him obey?

secretsqirrel2, lilly - THEY LIE!!!!!
1. how can you believe that the number of illegals is 26% down?????
Nobody knows the real numbers!! So, 26% of what???
They lie again! The real number is UP every day!!!

2. many e.g. cans are labeled today "distibuted by", without mentioning the country of origin (there is/was a law about that, but it might have been neutered.. we don't know).
BRW - tomato idiocy in USA - the tomato has to "look good" - so most of them are picked green, sprayed with ethylene to make it red - and that's why it tastes like a potato... Grow your own, the darker, the better (Brandywine, Black Krim. Cheerokee purple, etc)

The Freedom of Migration Act
The current immigration laws are in clear defiance of the rules of the free market. They only can be effectively enforced in a Soviet style political system. As Americans supporting enforcement of the current immigration laws simultaneously do not want totalitarian political system, our present immigration laws are not enforced meticulously.

Unless Americans will acknowledge this internal contradiction in their political views, nothing can be done in resolving our current immigration crisis.

The simplest solution is defined in the proposal called the Freedom of Migration Act. Read about it at http://www.henrykkowalczyk.com/immigration.htm .

See it on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6i8xbHNCxoU . Please check my other videos on immigration at http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=hak1010 .

Tell me, what is wrong with the Freedom of Migration Act?

Henryk A. Kowalczyk

Right on!!!
YES! It needs to be brought to light that Bush and the White House are protected by walls and fences, but Bush won't allow the American people to be similarly protected. Only a hard wall or fence on our southern border will do. Only via a wall will America's protection be verifiable at a glance. Only a physical wall or fence can be trusted. Electronic and other "virtual" devices can be rendered useless with a little on/off switch, and the people would never know if Bush or Kennedy flicked the switch off. I'll start listening to data on "virtual" fences after the White House walls are torn down and replaced by so-called "virtual" fences for the President.

DEAR TREE-HUGGERS

The nut house is down the road from you.
You are well advised to make your way there.

AS SIMPLE AS YOU WANT IT TO BE
Yes, we can reform immigration and it's simple.

* Secure the borders
* Enforce employment laws
* Cut off the benefits for illegals
* Cut off federal funding to any state or local agency which does not cooperate with enforcement of immigration laws

Liberal Thought in a Nutshell
will (a soi-disant gay atheist liberal regular on TH) wrote (in reply to another column), "Maybe she'll [Laura Ingraham] get hit in a terrorist attack. Or raped. And I never wish anyone ill-will."

Thanks "will." I will make sure this is posted on every column response here today.

Start with Your States
Arizona has passed a piece of legislation that revokes the business licenses of companies that knowingly hire illegals. This law, described as the toughest in the US, is already being studied by other states. It will not solve every problem, but it will eliminate some of it - and it's a good first step. Many illegals, after all, are hired off the streets as day labor, and they almost never have the necessary paperwork - whether it is fake or not. This will shut down one avenue of work, and illegals are already talking about going to other states where it's "easier" to work. The state is now working to provide the necessary checks for employers for those that have fake paper. And this issue, ironically, is often controlled by the Social Security Administration and INS, in that fake social security cards are the opening that enables them to get drivers licenses. Fake green cards, in turn, are the responsibility of the INS.

Talk to your state senators and representatives.

Get this law moving. It doesn't require Bush or the Senate, and if our state can do it - so can yours.

The other issue, of course, is border enforcement. We in border states need everyone's help.

Arizona wants to put the national guard on the border, and wants to arm it. The feds want to send it overseas, and do not want us to arm it.

Get your states to attack this issue. If the states can get a law that permits them to beef up border security on their own, without the interference of the department of homeland "insecurity", we can also tackle this issue.

To refer to the Senate as mules is to insult mules everywhere! haha.

They are nothing more than maggots squirming in a mess of crap. Each trying to eat more than the other maggots. Trusting them to do the right thing for America is like trusting Bill Clinton to babysit your 16 y.o. daughter.

THE REAL REASON FOR AMNSTY IS:
North American Leaders Unveil Security and Prosperity Partnership
Bush, Fox, Martin outline trilateral efforts during March 23 meeting

President Bush speaks during a news conference in Waco, Texas on March 23 after talks with Mexican President Vincente Fox and Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin. (AP/WWP)

President Bush, Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin and Mexican President Vicente Fox announced the establishment of the "Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America" in a March 23 joint statement.

Convening that same day in Waco, Texas, for a trilateral meeting, the North American leaders said the security and prosperity of their nations are "mutually dependent and complementary" and explained the impetus for the new initiative.

"In a rapidly changing world, we must develop new avenues of cooperation that will make our open societies safer and more secure, our businesses more competitive, and our economies more resilient," they said in their statement.

The leaders indicated that the North American partnership will work to achieve these ends and "is committed to reach the highest results to advance the security and well-being of our people."

As part of their efforts to protect North America from external threats, to prevent and respond to threats within North America, and to streamline legitimate cross-border trade and travel, the three countries will implement common border-security strategies, enhance infrastructure protection, implement a common approach to emergency response, implement improvements to aviation and maritime security, enhance intelligence partnerships, combat transnational threats, and implement a border-facilitation strategy.

To improve North American competitiveness and enhance the quality of life in the region, the partnership participants will pursue regulatory cooperation while maintaining high health and safety standards. The North American nations will also promote sectoral cooperation in energy, transportation, financial services, technology and other areas. Other initiatives include reducing the costs of trade and enhancing environmental stewardship.

To pursue the partnership mandate, ministerial-level working groups will be established to set specific, measurable, achievable goals and identify concrete steps toward these goals. Within 90 days, the ministers will issue initial reports. Thereafter, the groups will report semi-annually, the three leaders said in their statement.

Following is the text of the joint statement, as released by the White House:

NO MORE USA AFTER 2010, COMMON CURRENCY – AMERO

My Question Still Stands...
How do people like John McCain keep getting re-elected? Can anyone enlighten me?

SteveR: Is that right?
Chertoff's latest claim is he can't find design engineers for the fence?

I hadn't heard that, but hell, I'm an engineer, and I'll design it for free.

I agree were's the fence?
The senate didn't get the message yet "We the people" want the fence(.) Then we can talk about a guest worker program. If an illegal alien is brought into the court system they should be detained for a reasonable period of time, then deported. That way there is real impact and motivation to follow the rules. They want to come here and work? fine, get in line. The other needed motivator is fines, and jail, for those who hire the cheap labor many of whom are paid below minimum wage etc.

NAFTA
The immigration problem is the result of NAFTA plain and simple. Ross Perot warned us of that years ago but we wouldn't listen. The problem has only gotten worse. The "global citizens" out there who reject the idea of borders had better get a clue. Europe tried that and now look at what they have. Their culture is going the way of the dodo bird to be replaced by islam. I believe the recent election in France was a dead cat bounce for French conservatives. In 10 years Europe as we know it won't exist then North America will be next on the muslems list of conquests. The time for talk is over it is time to take action starting with the ballot box. This country won't be fit to live in twenty years from now. Don't belive me take a look south of the border that is America in the year 2030. Ignoring a problem won't make it go away.
I AM JOHN DOE!!!!!

Funny
How CC Meyers rebuilt the entire LA Freeway system on time and under budget in the aftermath of the LA Earthquake, but Chertoff says it is beyonf our (read Federal Goverment's) engineering skills to design a fence.

For those waiting on the fence, don't knock yourself out. That fence, not to mention border enforcement will not happen until there is a significant change in Congress and the GOP party.

Never Forget
We've come to expect this kind of nonsense from all the usual liberal suspects.

But let's not forget that Trent Lott stood up there and said they would have to "do something" about talk radio, in response to the phone lines jammed with enraged voters.

As if he is accountable to NO ONE!

We have created an elite professional class of business-as-usual politicians. VOTE THEM OUT!

Hak's website thinks 911 was a prank!
OK HAK so 911 was a prank? Guess pearl habor was one also. Some people never wake up. I hope you learn the Koran cause thats the only other alternative.

Say it ain't so, Jorge!
FOX News is reporting that our children in Texas schools could soon be forced to speak Spanish to get along-- period! As they say in the law, res ipsa loquitur: the thing speaks for itself! I had heard that they were actively recruiting ILLEGAL alien teachers because the ILLEGAL hispanic kids were so pervasive in many schools. I picked the wrong life to give up drinkin'!

Work to stop the ILLEGAL alien invasion NOW, folks! There is no tomorrow! If they give them the vote even, much less a path to citizenship, America will be lost forever. We will inexorably devolve into a third world welfare state. While we need EDUCATED immigrants with job skills (e.g., professionals), modern America cannot absorb the great unwashed, uneducated, indigent, willfully culturally disparate, endless madding crowd from the third world without morphing into what they are fleeing from.

Here again is the EASY way to reach those in Congress at their OFFICIAL contact sites... bookmark it and contact them often. People just like YOU derailed Scamnesty recently in a possibly watershed response from the vox populi, BUT WE MUST NOT WASTE THE OPPORTUNITY.

Tell Congress that you want TRUE enforcement FIRST; BUILD THE 500 MILES OF APPROVED WALL AND HIRE THE THOUSANDS OF APPROVED BORDER GUARDS; NO fallacious path to citizenship; NO welfare for ILLEGAL aliens; NO voting without citizenship; let the border guards do their jobs, and free Campean and Ramos; a proper interpretation of the 14th Amendment (madres of anchor babies are NOT subject to our jurisdiction-- they are ILLEGALLY encroaching); and English should be our OFFICIAL and ONLY language.

the truth about amigo Jose
We need to throw out the scamnesty shills in Washington and support the good Senators who stood up to the Conspiracy Of Evil! The WSJ, the Chamber ilk, etc., are simply a shameful myopic part of the Conspiracy Of Evil: cheap labor-milking employers and their Chamber shills; scandal-burdened Catholic Church hierarchy seeking replacement contributors; ethnocentric latino groups seeking La Reconquista; self-aggrandizing money and vote-grubbing pols; the PC multicultural, anti-America chattering classes including the MM, academe, and other remote "elites"-- who never really mix and mingle with ILLEGALS and their myriad attendant social pathology ills.

Have you noticed that when the advocates and apologists for ILLEGALS state their cases that they seem vacuous and lame prima facie? Consider these typical bits of apologia for ILLEGALS:

DISINGENUOUS FALSE PREMISES AND SCARE TACTICS:

The "undocumented" are just doing jobs that Americans won't do that we must have done... they give more to America than they take... they pay into S.S. funds they will not get back... they have lesser rates of crime than legal Americans... they just want to share in the blessings of America just like the rest of us, which they have every right to do... resentment against them is racist/xenophobic-- they are really no different from prior waves of immigrants who were also resented, but who assimilated and made America great... the just proposed legislation was not amnesty... Americans generally believe in a path to citizenship for those already here... we cannot simply round up and deport 12-20 million... the only crime they have committed is akin to jaywalking.

DEMYTHOLOGIZING REALITIES & INCONVENIENT TRUTHS:

1) ILLEGALS ARE INDEED taking many jobs that Americans will gladly do (see construction), driving down wages, and permeating myriad attendant social problems (crimes, barrio blight, drugs, gangs, illegitimacies, dropouts, balkanization, diseases) like a locusts.

2) ILLEGAL aliens do NOT contribute more than they take, because the government services alone used by the uneducated indigent GREATLY exceed any minimal taxes paid (mostly sales taxes, etc.). Heritage calculates that each household headed by the undereducated indigent (legal OR ILLEGAL) will drain over $1 million in the course of a lifetime:

http://www.heritage.org/Research/Immigration/wm1076.cfm

3) Presidente Jorge has already committed to send already threatened and unfunded S.S. funds south to Mexico, and ILLEGALS would become eligible much sooner than American taxpayers... Jorge promised THEM while visiting in Mexico recently that he would work for THEM on this Scamnesty legislation! That is simply TREASON!

http://www.fairus.org/site/PageServer?pagename=research_research9605

4) Latino rates of crime and other social pathologies are, sadly, pandemically troublesome (the reasons are irrelevant to this discussion really-- facts are stubborn things), and worse among the poorer ones like most coming in ILLEGALLY (more than half have only a 7th grade education, assuring the snowballing of the associated social problems):

http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=M2Q5ZWZiOTU2OTY1YWEyZDFiYTliNTRmMzk0ODIwMmE
http://www.immigrationshumancost.org/index.html

5) They are NOT just like prior waves of immigrants in several ways... there are far more at once, there is no ocean separating them from the old cultures, they are clinging to same with no desire to assimilate, and the PC/multicultural ilk is aiding and abetting the ethnocentricity with bilingualism... furthermore, America is a VASTLY different nation socio-economically than it was when many LEGAL immigrants came historically-- we can benefit on balance today ONLY FROM EDUCATED, SKILLED IMMIGRANTS, which is NOT the norm among the great unwashed running across the border.

6) The pending Scamnesty is PRECISELY that, and the all-in implications are HORRENDOUS fiscally and socio-economically:

http://www.firesociety.com/article/12134/

7) Americans are rightfully indignant about the nonfeasance of the govt. which has allowed the ILLEGAL invasion to become an infestation. It is NOT that we are afraid of diversity as Presidente Jorge lamely and disingenuously opined-- we
already are the most diverse nation on earth! Ad hominem braying about "racism" is the calumny of artful scoundrels. When polled HONESTLY, Americans rightfully have profound concerns about unbridled immigration, especially ILLEGAL invaders:

http://www.cis.org/articles/2006/back906.html
http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=20530
http://www.grasstopsusa.com/

8) The artful ploy that "we cannot deport 12 million" is a willfully false premise/red herring argument. TRUE enforcement of EXISTING laws would result in attritive repatriation at THEIR expense-- the very same way they got here! We need only the political will to reflect the desires of Middle America.

9) The artful remote "elitist" PC theories of bilingualism and multiculturalism are doomed to failure. Even in countries with essentially the same ethnicity and culture, bilingualism alone creates crises (see Quebec).

10) As to scurrilous Geraldo-ilk suggestions that "these good people" are committing "minor crimes akin to jaywalking" in crossing the border, this is but the first of what become patterns of serial lawbreaking including tax dodging, identity fraud, welfare cheating, etc., ad nauseam. To suggest that they are less prone to serious crimes is simply a shameful bold-faced lie!

http://www.immigrationshumancost.org/index.html

There are sometimes defining
moments to a Presidency, after which that President has sealed his fate as an effective leader:

"Read my lips. No new taxes!"

"I did not have sex with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky!"

"See you at the signing ceremony!"

In all three cases, the man who said those things was politically crippled for the remainder of his administration.

BrianR
Heck, I was a Combat Engineer in the Corps for 10 years. Throw down some tanglefoot, then some single-strand barbed wire, and the triple strand razor wire. In front have a minefield with a mix of AP and AT mines, overwatched by towers with NVG's and machineguns. Call it a free-fire zone. Problem solved, troops get training, and illegals go away.

win-win-win.

Yep, Gunny
How un-PC and insensitive of you.

You're in dire need of retraining, and mandated diversity training.

Join the fight to save America!
Excellent points about the willful disconnect in Washington, Ms. Schlafly.

The pro-ILLEGAL business lobby (WSJ, MM, Chamber ilk) is simply part of that artful Conspiracy Of Evil which believes in the unbridled flow of so-called cheap labor or the "reclaiming" of America for hispanics. While a relative handful of owners pocket the labor cost savings, America pays a terrible and perhaps irreversible price all-in.

This (link just below) is what Presidente Jorge and the NAU/SPP "cheap" labor, globalist, open borders and La Reconquista ilk want to foist upon us-- no gracias, amigos!

http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2007/7/9/140357.shtml?s=al&promo_code=36D4-1

The reality is that we CANNOT afford all of the "cheap" labor because we are simply devolving into the welfare department for Latin America. We will inexorably morph into a third world welfare state; when ILLEGALS get the vote, they will insist upon it! Look at this tripe from the White House itself!!! LOL! Sorry but the feelings of human locusts and their liberal enablers fails to move me! haha.

In the fight to end the Invasion of the Benefit Snatchers, we have to use every weapon, even harsh language!

PatriotRage
why MCCn is being reelected?
For the same reason Ted, the " She cannot Swim, B*tch" is.....
stupidity on liberal part, lack of real info on conservative one ...

AND, BEFORE ANY OF SOCIALIST INBECILES GET ON IT, LET ME REMIND THEM:

AGAIN, TO ALL LEFTISTS
we love legal immigrants, we hate criminals (it includes ALL law-breakers).

If you do not agree with it, go to Kuber.

If you do, stop spitting at us.

Oh, no, not harsh language!
Gunny, you go too far!

Get a grip, man!

The Mouse that Roared
Yes people, we were the mouse who roared, lets not climb back into our little holes now. We saw in the light of truth that two little provisions in the Immigration Bill were really the cornerstone of the farce. Hidden and not spoken of; SPP and NAU which would have taken a slice out of our countries sovergenity. A chip here, and chunck there and soon NO MORE AMERICA! But a nation destroying plan come together.

It is time to keep up the pressure, it is time to let those elitest of both parties know that we are not BLIND MICE.It is also time to reject and eject from elected positions those who have thumbed their collective noses at us. Let us replace them with true Statesmen: not let the professional politicians continue to run over us by empty promises, and their own actions. Bought and paid for by those who's only allegance is to their own bank account.

Keep puting out the word, keep demanding the fence, and if need be; legally do what we can to expose those in this country illegally, and publically demand they be removed. IE make the government enforce the laws on the books.

The pen is mightier than the sword , but the keyboard is akin to a nuclear weapon.

In other words,
the elitists in power are mandating that AMERICAN
kids learn the language forced on them by the ILLEGAL invaders. We not only need a fence but we need to demand ENGLISH only be the national language.
I agree with Lily and thinker, I haven't bought foreign grown produce in years, and I just discovered that much of the frozen veggies I am used to buying no longer have place of origin on
the bags, soooo back they go into the store freezer. I am careful about where my food comes from, I do make mistakes but not too often anymore. I try to buy my produce locally, guess it's time to learn to can and to freeze the local food. I'd think if enough Americans refused to buy the foreign grown food, the processors would get the message. Our local
canning company went out of business a few years ago, guess that chinese labor is cheaper. If I had the land I'd grow my own. We just have to learn to do without some of the out of season
fruits and veggies. I do buy some fruits and
veggies but only from countries I trust. We had such high food standards a few decades ago, but
seems like money talks and our bought and paid for leaders did the bidding of their masters and
dropped the standards. So kids get food borne diseases, so what? My portfolio is healthier, is
their motto. My kids had a bad time a few years ago, with Chinese imports of honey which was adulterated, not to mention they export their second rated honey. They aren't above making
the barrels heavier with inanimate objects that
are inedible. They will circumvent the restrictions by routing their products through another country, they sent the honey via Argentina. Cost my kids a bundle because the prices went so low.

Duncan Hunter
Duncan Hunter did his homework does the grunt work for all these years (opposed the Simpson-Mazzoli Amnesty of 1986, 'built' the San Diego/Tijuana Border Security Fence, authored the law mandating the Border Security Double Fence across the southern borders of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas; yet he goes unmentioned.
He owns this issue. But for his many years of opposition and legislative battling, we, the people, would not have been in the position to win. He alone, has what it takes to be the President America needs now.

By the way, Richard Viguerie has come out with telling reasons why Thompson, F. should not have support from Conservatives.

Manna-Feast, PatriotRage, Mountain Rose
The reason individuals like McCain keep getting re-elected is simple. The Dem/GOP/MSM propaganda machines have perfected the technique known as: Tell a lie often enough until it becomes believed and accepted! The lie is that only they (Dem/GOP) can govern, only they have experience and wisdom. They have successfully convinced the American people, the rightful owners of this great nation that there is nowhere else to go, no other choices. With this atmosphere prevailing at every election, they have assured themselves a virtual lock on power.

I know this is true because on so many occassions I have asked on this TH site for folks to check out my website, JOEOLIVAFORPRESIDENT.ORG. Many have done so, but I often see responses that say I cannot win, that we should accept some elite; Ron Paul, Tom Tancredo, and even the newest darling of the GOP elites, Fred Thompson.

It is amazing to me that everyone ignores Einstein's words that if you do the same thing over and over, expecting different results, you are insane. What is so hard to understand about that? If we put our faith in another elite from either party, we will get more of the same, more big government, less personal freedoms, and greater influence to the internationalists who hate America. That is the plain truth that stands up to the Dem/GOP/MSM myth!! There will be nothing new, not a thing will change unless and until we send a clear message to Washington that the American people have stood up to reclaim their inheritance which has been cleverly stolen from them.

There is only one way to do that, one unmistakeable message that will get their attention; DENY THEM THAT WHICH THEY DESIRE ABOVE ALL THINGS, THE PRESIDENCY!! If we do that, we will begin the journey home to a nation that has as its basic operating principles the Constitution, rule of law, and will of the people! Anything less than doing that one thing will only reassure the elites that they are invulnerable to the will of the people. They will continue with their own agenda and lead the nation and our children into a future that none of us want.

Check out my website and see what the possibilities are. We can reclaim out birthright if we want to, but we must get past believing that we should elect another one of these elites. Please visit the site, you will not be disappointed. Or else, can you honestly explain how a Dem/GOP POTUS will not be beholden to the party machine, the PACs, and the lobbyists that would get him/her elected? Someone please explain that? Thanks, Joe

Lilly - - - - - - 6:56 Am

For once you have written something that does have real reasons for our attention. Food safety, particularly as related to Red China, is a serious topic for discussion.

You have stated the problem pretty well. I will also say the quite often when logic and good reason are used, the paths of liberals and conservatives do cross or even parallel. We're not so different. Some of my friends will say, WHAT.??. The difference is that conservatives rely heavily on past experience, even historical, and liberals rely on rhetoric too much.

OK, now the Chinese are beheading a man for not doing his job. Good example, but really just show boating so they don't loose our future business.
One man for billions of dollars in business, you bet, in a New York minute.

China is going to be a major problem for us in the near future. They are now the worlds forth leading economy and growing very fast.

To Whit: The Economist 28 June 2007
""China last year overtook Japan to become the world's fourth-largest defense spender, after America, Britain and France.

This military expansion is made possible by startling economic growth. China's GDP now surpasses that of Britain or France. According to Goldman Sachs, China will overtake America around 2027 and become by far the world's biggest economy by 2050 (see chart 3). Even now, it is helping to prop up the weak American dollar by buying large chunks of American debt. China is pushing America aside as the world's biggest exporter, and last year it produced more cars than the United States.

America says it encourages the peaceful rise of China as a "responsible stakeholder" in the world. But its communist rulers are investing heavily in a blue-water navy, which may one day include aircraft carriers, apparently to establish a defensive perimeter deep in the Pacific along a chain of islands that runs from Japan to Guam and Papua. China is also modernizing its nuclear arsenal.

For the moment the Chinese seem interested mainly in regional dominance, particularly keeping America at bay in any future conflict over Taiwan. They are emphasizing "asymmetrical" means designed to blunt America's technological superiority: hoping to deny America the
use of the seas with long-range anti-ship missiles and submarines, paralyze its highly computerized forces through cyber-warfare and neutralize spy and communications satellites. In January, China tested an anti-satellite missile. Its defense budget is thought to be expanding by around 12% a year, though its real size is the subject of conjecture. ""

Yes, Lilly, China is shipping poisoned foods and toothpastes that are killing not only pets but real people in developing countries like Central America and the Caribbean. Yes, you are on to something important and I encourage you to pursue this travesty. It is no accident they have these poisoned products. They are cost cutters. Profit means far more to them than human lives. Please keep that in mind when you wonder at our conservative slant on things. It means to conserve what is good and get rid of what is bad.

Democrats who keep their word
Ms. Shlafley cites three junior Democrat Senators who ran on "secure borders" platforms and kept their word.

I say "Bravo!"

I sincerely hope time and pressure do not erode the fortitude of these Senators, and that they continue to exhibit sound character in their tenure. And may the entire Democrat party come to exhibit the same. As an honest Republican, I really would welcome genuine, well-meaning debate with honest, reasonable opponents; there's far too much irrational partisanship from the Left, and it endangers the nation.

opportunists
Lilly, I agree that there are a lot of opportunist. Not all foreign. But so what? If nobody ever took advantage of an opportunity we would all be the loser.

When they start executing the criminal opportunist in America, including politicians, perhaps we will be getting somewhere toward stopping criminal opportunism.

Hey Brian...
...what do you mean you never heard of the engineering difficulties?

I made that comment on yer post "Where's The Fense?"

Zeb Hardy - - - Tea Party

Zeb, I fully second the nomination of Duncan Hunter. How do we get him into National attention. He's slightly drier than Thompson, a Marine officer would be, but one heck of a good conservative and more so a patriot with a head on his shoulders.

Tea Party, good inclinations on the food supply. One caveat though. There are a few countries with good products that I for one will buy. One is Chile. They are a finely tuned society with good rules and very little cheating. A people and country you could really like upon knowing them. Push away the south east Asia stuff and buy with confidence products from the Americas. And tell your manufacturers that you don't want cars or other products from China.

Secure The Borders ???
I doubt very much that we have any politician or leader george Bush included who has the intestinal fortitude to build the fence and secure the border's and start effectively enforcing the current immigration laws. It seem very apparent to me the presidente Bush and the likes of the RINO's in the senate have been bought and paid for by the Cheap Labor, and Big Business lobbies.
In my opinion the senate heard the roar of the american citizen, and understood that they were not willing to accept amnesty. Do you think possibly if they heard the roar, and observed a flood of irate citizens gathered at the border they might take notice ??? I don't mean a few thousand either.

To Onceamarine
Thanks for the response. Yes, we cons & libs probably have more in common than otherwise and if we were neighbors we'd get along fine. I am totally p***** off about the food supply issue. For one thing, if you go to Mexico as a tourist they tell you to peel all fruit etc but all the blackberries I have bought for the past two or three years have come from Mexico and you can't peel a blackberry. Now we have the business about Chinese seafood and canned goods, and additives that are supposed to be edible only they aren't. I am starting to wonder about foods that aren't labeled. Apparently it's the weird commercial additives that pose a danger---things to color and stabilize and thicken and flavor the food so it will have a long shelf-life and taste good---China has been putting substances in that aren't what they're supposed to be putting in. (I have an 1858 cookbook that tells the housewife how to tell if the grocery has stretched the flour with Plaster of Paris---I never thought I would have to be thinking that way when I buy groceries in the United States.)

It seems that more of our food is coming from weird sources and we aren't always told about it. Meat is not labeled due to the meat lobby in Washington---I am assuming that pork and beef are US-produced but now, who knows?. Over the weekend I had dinner with a friend whose family farms in North Dakota. They were told that the buyers of their millet would no longer buy from them as they can get millet cheaper from China.

A fence? I don't really have a dog in that race. Of course I believe our borders should be controlled, but I doubt that a fence will solve the problem---dogs and even pigs have been outsmarting fences forever, and would-be refugees sure outsmarted the Berlin Wall for years. But while we are arguing about the fence, dangerous foodstuffs are arriving here by government invitation.

Manna-Feast - - - bravo

"The pen is mightier than the sword, but the keyboard is akin to a nuclear weapon."

Hey that phrase belongs in Thomas Sowells column this morning. Great Line...........

What do we do
about some of our stooopid leaders? I saw on Fox News this morning, that there are some schools in Texas, that are going to make English speaking students take classes in Spanish. I mean their classes will be taught in Spanish.!!

Some legislators are upset about it, as are a lot of parents. But some of the ignorant legislators have signed it into law.

Now a video game has come out to make people understand the poor illegal alien. I think it's called "Iced".

Something has to be done about this problem soon. They are taking over, thanks to our government.

In our state,(Oklahoma) where Mexicans disappeared after the governor signed that bill. Well I guess they found out it doesn't take effect until November 1st, cause they were back in force this week-end.

Jimmy,
I didn't understand it as him saying they couldn't find engineers, which is different from "difficulties". "Engineering difficulties" could mean anything, and really means nothing.

Hell, any decent engineer could design a good border fence structure.

We doan need no stinkin'
Engineers!

*I'll* build the darned fence for you! Just provide me with the stone / brick required, and the funding that's been promised, and I'll build you a great fence that will keep out illegals and provide employment for hundreds if not thousands of American citizens!

I'm a 5th generation master mason, with 30 years experience; I literally grew up with a trowel in my hand and I can tell you that once upon the times the masons WERE the engineers.

It'll have guard posts every mile or two, with the infrastructure for pouring boiling oil onto anyone attempting to tunnel under (and mortar positions for those smart enough to start the tunnel away from the wall). Any wall the Chinese can build, we can build better.

But I'd rather build a canal from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of California. Not only would it deter illegal invaders, it would supplant the Panama Canal (and did I mention it would employ thousands of legal American workers?)

Of course, if Bush were to make it a masonry fence, no doubt he'd "decorate" it with thousands of beautiful, majestic ARCHES.

nanna
Nanna, you know what ticks me off?

The delivery company I now work for delivers medical equipment for Canadian Valley Medical Services (recently acquired by Walgreens.)

Routinely, I will call to confirm the delivery address, to be confronted with someone who no habla English, and whose surname is latino... and I look on the paperwork, and there it is in black and white: the bill goes to Medicaid. You do the math.

Maybe the bill scared the illegals in your neighborhood off for awhile, but in my neighborhood, they're still legion.

More common sense
Phyllis scores another 3 from way outside the key! Very good colunm and follow up posts (well most anyway). Now if only we can vote the bums out from both Parties, perhaps we may get our Country back and even secure the Boarder.

Bush and the Republicans have sold us out on Hate crimes, the Department of Homeland Security(?), MCCain Feingold,Nation Building in the Middle East and so much else that we have to rachet up our efforts on all fronts to regain National sanity.

lilly
I don't often give advice. But as one who grew up farming and has spent time in Mexico(never again for Mexico)their standards are not the same. Just be careful. Chile and Ecaudor as well.

P.S. Your right about all of us getting along. I think we are letting the MSM exploit and divide us. I think we have more in common than we think.

I think
it's time for some fresh faces in Congress from on both sides of the aisle.

lilly
I also agree with you about the food supply issue. Now they are finding American companies doing it too. Another reason to vote these guys out of office. I think they are all bought off by big business. Campaign donation here and there, a trip here and there, stocks here and there. The next thing you know these politicians are fully vested in these companies and are protecting their interests and not ours.

Good point
M Sederoff writes: Tuesday, July, 10, 2007 8:04 AM
Anti-amnesty NOT a loser for Republicans
I appreciate Ms. Schlafly's clear thinking on this. I have lately read conservative editorial writers who are worried that now Republicans are going to be viewed as anti-immigrant, as if we should have endorsed bad policy for political gain. Isn't that what citizens complain about all the time from politicians?
-----------

As if appearance is the trump card over results.

No conservative person talks like that, only a lying socialist in a cloak, using the name "republican".

I personally do not give **** how I am percieved by anyone, I want the laws enforced and the ones who will not do their job impeached, fired and tried for malfeasance, treason and/or imcompetance.

Hagar--Pearl Harbor was a fraud too.
Yes, it is true. Pearl Harbor was actually bombed by the US Navy with planes painted to resemble IJN aircraft which were actually thousands of miles away in the home waters of Japan. US Navy intelligence confirmed in the days before the so-called attack that the Japanese carriers were in Japan's home waters and nowhere near Hawai'i.

Also the "torpedoes were actually mines planted on the various ships by special operation teams that were part of the US military. No Japanese torpedoes nor any other torpedo could be used by aircraft in the shallow waters at Pearl Harbor.

The so-called attack was a a plot so America would join the war. The Japanese was picked as the attackers due to racism. Germans and Italians being white.

Other plots by the US include the moon landings, various other "space probes," Elvis, Roswell, NM, 9/11 among others. The US also created AIDS in a secret military complex in the 1970s.

It's all true. Trust me.

It turned out that more research was needed on this "can't find engineers to design the wall" thing.

Chertoff's complaint, in actuality, is that he can't find the right engineers to design a wall that's... NOT a wall.

I have to admit, that might be hard. Engineers tend to be philosophical positivists, at least about things like walls. Ask them for a wall, you're gonna get a wall.

To design a wall that isn't really a wall, you need the talents of a politician. Chertoff has apparently been looking to hire in the wrong market.

That virtual wall...
..of seperation of church and state is pretty damn effective.

Lilly
Yes

I just got a letter
It was from my Senator, James Inhofe. He is fighting these illegal immigrants and their demands. Letting them go to college here if they have been here for five years. etc.The "Dream act" Development , Relief, and Education for Alien Minors.

He also said that this immigration bill will come up again, that Harry Reid just "suspended" it. So there will be another fight down the road over this.

Get ready folks, and don't take your eye off the ball. These pushers of these invaders are determined.

Listen they did
In North Carolina, we have a couple of mushy moderates in the Senate, Dole and Burr. Burr voted for the bill the first time around. Boy, did they get an earful? Both voted nay the second time. Keep the pressure on.

HEY BOOMER. WE REALLY DON'T NEED A FENCE
We need a "backbone"! Remember, I supported W with all the energy I could muster because of the "external Threats" which seemed more urgent
in nature. It is like defending against a gun when cancer is eating at your bowels!

Later I began to realize that while W is mostly right on the threat from Jihadists, he is Stubborn, not Brave! As I have previously stated in my posts, two vetoes in 6 years is a crime!
Talk about "round heels". He never took one fight to the Vicious Democrats and Liberal RINOs.
"A Uniter, Not A Divider" was not supposed to mean Mexico and the U.S.!

You probably know that during Clintons play time
in the cat, read Whitehouse, there were 20 times more raids on employers of illegals than Ws tenure. Being raised with a Hispanic Nanny, of sorts and with Jeb married to a Mexican lady;
both ladies likely illegal at some point, has certainly softened both Ws heart and head!

It seems obvious to me that if the INS was making
raids prior to W they would have continued the policy until "Someone told them to stop!"
Think W! IMAGINE HOW MANY OF THESE "BORDERLOPERS"
WOULD STILL BE IN MEXICO IF W HAD JUST DONE NOTHING!

Hell No, we don't have to resort to a fence when
we havn't really wanted to stop them all this time. While it is true that trying to dry up the available jobs which most illegals are after, some will still find work "under the table" due to our stupid tax laws which make it as easy for the small business to pay the taxes themselves and pay the worker in cash as to go the red tape
route. And of course, having already stolen anything of value in Mexico, the thieves will still come where the "goodies" are and where the punishment is lighter.

Having exhausted "NONE OF THE AVAILABLE OPTIONS"
it is most rediculous to build a wall and force the pro illegals here in our Government to pass
or ignore laws to render it ineffective after all that effort and expense!

Columba Bush
PhillupSpace:

She met Bush in Mexico when he was an exchange student there. She came to the US legally. And since both President George H. W. Bush and George Bush were elected as President you can be sure that all of their domestics were legal--if not the media and their opponents would have burned them at the stake for it.

Remember Clinton's first attorney general pick Zoe Baird and her nanny problem? And then there was Linda Chavez's problem with illegals and then there was Bernard Kerik. If there was an illegal aline spouse or nanny in any of the Bush's past believe me you would have known about it.

But I guess all Hispanics (Asians too?) to you at one point were illegals, huh?

And another By The Way,
Didn't I just read where Arizona just passed the harshest law to punish employers et,al. for employing (facilitating illegal rewards) when both their Senators "walked the plank" for this
amnesty bill? I have heard all the spin but I still ask myself; If this bill was not for the benefit of the citizens of their state (who just
revolted against the very idea of it) then who was it for?????? WAS THIS BILL FOR ANY OF YOU?
I take this oppurtunity to go intergalactic!
Was this bill for you Martians??? Not for anyone here that I can find!

AKAGI; I concede your point.
Perhaps a little over the top with that one. But please don't discount the rest of my post. W literally shut down efforts to impede the flow
and he too walked the plank for reasons I cannot understand.

Excellent column Ms. Schlafly!
I have been writing and calling my Congressmen and requesting they draft a new immigration bill which calls just for the things we who opposed the so called immigration reform bill wanted to see. Thus far none have responded in favor of doing just that, but the people in the office of one of them whom also stood opposed to the Senate bill from day one have indicated that he is not opposed to the idea of doing just that, only that it should be done the right way (IE not another back room deal).

If nothing is done before the next recess I may even meet with that Senator to personally discuss the idea.

As voters the best we can do is put the same pressure on our Congressmen that we put on our Senators to stop the Senate bill. Only then will we see action.

I also agree with BrianR (and others) that if there were a movement to impeach the President based on the failure to secure our borders, especially in our post 9/11 world and even more so after the planned Fort Dix attack by illegal immigrant Islamic radicals was foiled, I would join it in a heart beat. I doubt it will happen because for congress to do so would also hold them to similar standards and accountability, remember Teddy Kennedy is just as at fault for the failures as Bush is and more so I think due to his much longer time in office in D.C.. The democrats do not want a president of impeachment based on failing to keep the country secure because they know any future Democratic President would be held to the same standard.

Bush will fight any such impeachment based on the grounds that he signed the 2006 fence bill but has no power to allocate funding, that is a congressional issue. If Bush were smart during the next recess he would fund it via executive order and cover his @$$ for potential impeachment.
****

I like GunnyG's logic too, even though the humanitarians would find it atrocious. We need that kind of logic applied to our border defence and any theater of war we operate in, such as Iraq and Afghanistan. If we had secured Iraq's border with Iran and Syria once the invasion phase was complete we would not have the issue of insurgents today. We knew they would be a problem, but failed to secure our position in Iraq and now we pay the price.

"Only a physical wall or fence can be trusted. Electronic and other "virtual" devices can be rendered useless with a little on/off switch, and the people would never know if Bush or Kennedy flicked the switch off."
---------------
Also, a "virtual fence" only lets someone monitoring know that the space being monitored has been breached. It doesn't actually keep anybody out. If we have good cameras, positioned correctly, and if the person(s) crossing the border look into the camera, we MIGHT be able to identify them later, if we happen to apprehend them. (Think of the surveillance videos you've seen on the news: really grainy pictures, really poor lighting.)

You're right: only real bricks, real mortar, real barbed wire on a real TALL fence will do.

The Problem Remains: No Guts!!!
There are 20 million illegals here today who were
not here in 1990. After passing the amnesty bill of 1986 Congress promised to control the border.
Congress DOES NOT need the presidents approval to pass strict border control. 80% of americans oppose the amnesty bill just trounced and a far smaller majority can pass a veto proof border bill. They just don't have the guts. Fact is, they never intended to control the border and maybe offend someone somewhere someday somehow.
No matter what bill they bring up in the future,
they have no intention of doing anything different. It is just "Kick The Can Further Down The Road: I don't want to deal with it"! Just put it in that time capsule with Medicare, Social Security, Federal Debt and Carbon Offsets
to be opened by some future unsuspecting President."

Mrs. Schlafly
In 1832,Andrew Jackson was facing re-election.The Second Bank of the United States was the issue.Mr. Jackson was opposed to a central bank, while his opponent,Henry Clay was for the bank.Mr.Clay and Daniel Webster had the bank re-chartering bill introduced and passed in Congress.President Jackson vetoed the bill. The election of 1832 determined the fate of the veto.Jackson had a slogan; No Bank-Jackson,Bank- No Jackson.Mr. Jackson won 55% of the vote. This was the last time that the American citizens had entry into the Congressional process! This Immigration event does not show any sustainable footprints, which belong to American citizens. There are no Presidential candidates which can take the position of President Jackson. Therefore to assume that a Immigration bill will not pass, after the 2008 election is pure "FOLLY".It's all about the "BENJAMINS"...

"ON THE WATERFRONT" ??????
Bush and his Neocon Amigos as well as our Congress will have blood on their hands if they fail to secure our borders.

We already know that Bush cannot wait to start something with Iran and if our military has one last hurrah before it comes home and Bush decides to provoke Iran we most certainly will be faced with another possible 911 catastrophe and if we are caught with unsecure borders and ports then blood will be on their hands.

Talk radio didnt stand up about illegal immigration until they felt the pulse of the American people and found out which way the wind was blowing. However, with that said...it was nice to get their help and it was about time too!
Now it seems that Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage are backsliding back to their old Neocon ways.

Its my understanding that the CFR Rockefeller Republicans and Bush Neocons are planning on trying to pass this illegal immigration bill one more time before he leaves office.

Yesterday morning as I watched C-span they showed the White House Conference on the Americas and Bush talked about being a good neighbor and seeing to it that Congress appropriates 30 billion dollars of american taxpayer money on assisting south americans with various requests. He also mentioned the newest Globalist...Bill Gates of Micro-soft and talk of a medical services school being built in Panama to teach and train the people in medical technology. I guess Bush must have forgotten that he was the President of America not the President of the Americas!? Reminded me of the article CFR Fred Thompson penned the other day about training cheap unskilled laborers to do medical jobs so these medical companies would not have to pay so much. Well, to bad Fred didnt tell us about their school in Panama!? He conveniently left it out of his column. Once I went to pull it up it wont let me retrieve the information...guess the secret to steal more american jobs is low key and already in the works!? Funny how Fred went right to the edge of the cliff, guess when he looked over he decided not to take that plunge just yet! At least not till he announces officially that he will be a Contender?

LOL, Dyerje
Well, I can certainly draw imaginary plans for an imginary wall, I guess.

I'm certainly glad we cleared up that little bit of confusion.

Of course, it will only stop imaginary invaders, but what the hey....

5 weeks of Talk Radio hysteria
Well folks, did we have a reasoned debate on immigration, or did the talk radio I have listened to for 20 years appeal to the basest elements.

Fear, xenophobia, the latino hoards at the gates!

It was the lowest point I have ever witnessed for talk radio, which is the last bastion and refuge for what would otherwise be a total onslaught of left wing ideology and manipulation.

It was like a sweaty KKK rally for 5 weeks and in the end, we celebrate...the status quo.

The status quo is a lot
better than the proposed alternative.

can someone tell me
How it is that McStain is still showing double digits in the primary polls? How is that possible? Who wants to see this guy as president?

Ditto for Gulliani. I don't get it. Do large numbers of GOP primary voters really want to see another open-borders president?

The candidates that *are* serious about enforcing border security can't seem to break 3%.

Is it possible that 90+ percent of GOP primary voters are stupid sheep that believe what they're told to by the MSM? You know, just like Democrats? If someone has a different explanation as to how polls consistently show McStain and the bald Hillary leading in the primaries, I'd sure like to hear it.

... on the status quo. The late unlamented amnesty bill would have been the equivalent of taking a carving knife to a bleeding man.

I did some web research on the Chertoff comment about not being able to find the requisite engineers, and it turned out that the basic reason he's having trouble finding them really IS that he doesn't want the wall to be, um, an actual WALL.

His words are that we can't have a literal wall (or fence) all along our border with Mexico. He actually said that, in too many different speeches and press conferences to list.

The border "fence" needs instead to be a system complex encompassing security measures blah blah blah... cameras... blah blah.. aerial surveillance... blah blah [insert Peanuts "adult-speak" noise here]... let's hire the Israelis to design it (that's a no fecal matter one, BTW)... blah blah... OK, maybe a little chain link for the photo op...

But a WALL? With, like, guard towers and stuff? No, Chertoff swears people in Texas and Arizona who'd have to look at the wall don't want it. We just can't do that. (Damn, people! Send the construction crew to California. We'll take the wall!)

Well, rant off. In the best situation -- like, one of effective law enforcement -- I wouldn't even want a wall. (Although I still say we just train some bougainvillea on it and, presto, it's a Border Garden and we could charge admission to tourists.)

Chertoff's unbelievable fount of "dog ate my homework" excuses is just emblematic of the reason so many of us don't trust the federal government to enforce the laws we already have, and execute the decisions we've already made.

The proponents gave us a small window
The twin Dreadnaughts, Bush and Kennedy threatened and cajoled the weaker senators to set short fuses and no amendments for this bill, knowing the more people found out about it the
more they would cry foul! Perhaps the public response seemed somewhat primal but there was
no one with which to have a rational debate!
There was nothing but ugly threats from the other side, Bush being the most venal.

We are now, in retrospect, having that debate.
Again, you can scarcely find anyone to engage
with on this matter. They won't even answer their phones.

Sure, the bill will come up repeatedly, with
different clothing (sheep) but the one with the emperors new duds got just what it deserved.

A simple solution
to the illegals problem ---- severally fine any business using illegal employees. No more food stamps, free medical, free education, welfare, etc., etc. Take away all the free stuff and jobs and the illegals will stop coming.

A PERFECT SOLUTION!!! AND BUILD THE DARN FENCE!

David Z
"...and in the end, we celebrate...the status quo."

Better than having the bill passed! And now let's get the laws already passed ENFORCED! AND BUILD THE DARN FENCE!

Dyerje, of course
There's no doubt about it. I even wrote a blog essay on it. He and Bush are just plain flat-out refusing to do their jobs as mandated by LAW.

The Dems keep squawking about impeachment, but keep using the wrong reason, the Iraq war.

If they're serious about impeaching the guy, HERE'S their issue. Malfeasance and misfeasance in office, a real "high crime" or "misdemeanor" under the Constitution, for refusing to carry out the law as is his duty.

They wouldn't even face much of an uproar at this point; hell, I'd support it.

David Ziegler
"5 weeks of Talk Radio hysteria...It was like a sweaty KKK rally for 5 weeks and in the end, we celebrate...the status quo."

In case you haven't heard, talk radio is running America, not the KKK. Unless, the KKK membership is at an all-time high, with members from the Democrat and Republican parties? The Senators were hearing from whites, blacks, asians, and yes, hispanics in such numbers that Senators from both sides of the idle voted nay. "Americans" spoke, and you America-haters LOST!

1. Polls of any type can be manipulated to produce the results the pollster wants. If the polls are conducted by the MSM always question the agenda behind the pollster.

2. McCain and Gulliani have name recognition and will get some results simply due to that. And just today McCain is in the news for his downward spiral...so give it a bit more time and he will be off the radar.

I'm supporting Huckabee for a few reasons;

* He supports the "FairTax" (HR25) http://www.fairtax.org
* He supports secure borders
* He supports the war on terror and in Iraq (and thinks we are not doing enough for a decisive victory in either)
* He opposes amnesty for illegal aliens
* He is for the 2nd amendment rights of the people
* I agree with his thoughts on education and how teachers unions are standing in the way of quality education and prevent school districts from getting rid of bad teachers or rewarding good ones.
* And last but not least he had me laughing out loud for quite some time with the John Edwards $400 haircut remark in the Republican debate many months back.

I do not go by just one issue. I support the one candidate who I agree with on the majority of issues I consider important at the time and the one that comes across the most genuine & likable to me.

More illegal alien news
The news today was that a murderer was caught.

It seems that he had abducted a pretty little girl from her own backyard on the 4th of July, had his evil way with her and buried her in a shallow grave.

This man was from Thailand, a nation known for trading in child s&x slaves, and was here illegally.

He was a registered sex offender.

Would somebody please explain to me:
1) Why is this S.O.B. still in this country?
2) If here, why is he allowed out of jail?

coming to the USA legally
My father came from Norway, the old fashion way, Legally. If the Cubans can't come t the USA, by boat, why can the Mexicans walk across, and get a job that has no benefits. I thought we already FREED THE SLAVES!!! People from other countries wait for years, and Paco, runs across the border, comes to Wisconsin, gets illegal factory jobs, and illegal farm jobs. Is our Government s crooked, that illegal means nothing to them anymore. Maybe we should clean house. On Company in whitewater, Wi, had 100 workers, After immigration raided the place, they now have 9. Why should we have to support illegal people, and put up with their bad driving. Speak up America!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
