The curious case of NEA priorities

Poll
Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

It is, arguably, the most powerful union and lobbying group in the country. And you cannot envy what its members are up against.

Day after day, the National Education Association (NEA) sees the same statistics we do.

Plunging test scores. Floods of incoming college freshman who can’t read at even a sixth-grade level. Principals and school boards groping for incentives that will draw better teachers into lifelong service for high stress and infrequent appreciation.

Instead of embracing the joys of books and learning, America’s children are gorging junk food on the couch, dabbling with R-rated music videos and video games while their synapses run headlong down blind brain alleys.

Teacher morale remains low, as many grapple daily with parents who are disengaged and apathetic, neurotic or demanding, angry or eager to move their child into alternative educational settings.

Add to all that the professional pressures inherent in “No Child Left Behind,” and you can understand how the NEA leaders who gathered this summer in Orlando for their annual convention had their work cut out for them. The toughest question was undoubtedly the first one: where do we start, when it comes to fixing America’s schools?

Well, they figured it out. And, really, faced with so many incredible challenges, their priority makes sense. This is, after all, the NEA. They know the classroom. They know the teachers. They know the real challenges of education.

Which is why their elected leaders decided that, before anything else, the first thing our teachers have to do is win popular support for homosexual “marriage.”

That’s right. The all-knowing members of the NEA decided that what our kids need to know – more than math, geography, grammar, science, or computer skills – is what men and men see in each other, why women and women fall in love, and what our government and society “owes” those who practice homosexual behavior.

You can see why that kind of information is critical to a third grader, can’t you?

Of course not. The NEA didn’t think so. That’s why they’re taking the matter out of your hands. Listen, when the world’s largest teacher’s union elects to endorse same-sex “marriage,” they’re not talking tacit support. They’re talking posters and projects, classroom lectures and guest speakers, testimonials and textbooks – at every grade level, and in every public school, in every school district in America.

Questions, of course, accumulate. Among them:

What if a teacher or principal objects to same-sex unions, for reasons of personal faith or experience? What if said educator doesn’t want his (often mandatory) NEA dues going to support those who promote homosexual behavior? What if parents don’t want their children learning about sex (or sexual politics) at school? What if children are ill-equipped, mentally or emotionally, to handle the information presented by a zealous instructor?

Either the NEA has considered, and dismissed, these questions – in which case the group that wants to exert the most significant impact on America’s teachers, parents, and children turns out to have no real concern or compassion for our teachers, parents, or children... or else the union has not considered these crucial questions, in which case... ditto.

Either way, the academic needs of children are no longer as much a priority for this organization as the political agenda of those who engage in homosexual behavior.

Actually, that’s not anything new for the teachers’ union. The NEA has been working hand-in-glove for years with aggressive promoters of homosexual behavior. Indeed, former NEA president Bob Chase is a member of the board of GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Educational Network), and once defended NEA’s force-feeding of the homosexual agenda to children by warning that:

“Some critics want the public schools to be an agent of moral doctrine, condemning children and adults when they are not in accord with Biblical precepts.”

But if the NEA objects to teaching moral doctrines … how do they justify teaching immoral doctrines? If they’re against teaching creationism, for example, for its spiritual implications, how can they favor sex education classes that indoctrinate even very young children with homosexual advocacy?

How can they bar prayers, ministers and Christian clubs from campus, while organizing school assemblies, demonstrations, and classroom visits featuring homosexual and transgender “role models?”

Clearly, the NEA has rejected its prima facie identity as the representative of America’s teachers, in favor of a new raison d’etre: brainwashing schoolchildren into acceptance of, and even indulgence in, homosexual behavior. For the union’s leaders, there will be no rest until families all over the country not only acknowledge, but embrace and endorse the homosexual agenda.

It’s as simple as A-B-C. What those pressing that agenda cannot win at the ballot box, they will win in the minds of the next generation... one vulnerable child at a time.

Inaccurate and misleading
And not surprising at all.

Teaching *about* homisexuality is optional, not requuired. No on e"learns" to BECIMe homosexual.

Why would you want children to be subjected to ridicule, cruelty, and possibly violence because they are gay?

I think I'm scared
Me: 22, female, practicing Catholic. Catching the bus to school in about an hour, where I will be learning about the psychology of learning and development. That's right, I'm on the road to becoming a teacher. Elementary school, to be exact.

And you're telling me they're going to make me join a union that fights for something I believe the opposite of?

Is that just for public schools, or do all teachers have to join? Because if it's just for public, than my goal - 100% charter school or Catholic school employment - is looking more and more desirable.

Five Practical Steps
Now, for five practical steps towards a solution:
1. Eliminate the Federal Department of Education and the Secretary’s position in the Cabinet. Imagine how many fewer administrators, with six-figure salaries would be eliminated if there were no federal grants to chase after.
2. Make it a federal felony for public school professional educators to participate in a strike, sick-out or work slowdown. If you don’t think this can be done, ask the employees of the FAA. This will change the role of the NEA
3. Return the tax dollars saved by step one in the control of the states. For those of you who have been conditioned to say, “how will we pay for that tax cut,” (sic) this means don’t take the tax in the first place. This will enable states to exact appropriate revenues to increase the salaries of entry level teachers so as to create a competitive environment with industry and business for the best and brightest graduates.
4. Speaking of competition, put two-thirds of the per-student cost in the hands of the parents in the form of a voucher. Use the other third to maintain infrastructure.
5. Reward administrators and Principals on the basis of real and tangible metrics indicative of success. Since they have a vested interest in the product, appoint community and business leaders to establish and monitor customer oriented metrics.

This bunch is beyond contempt
They have gotten away with their national subterfuge for so long without impunity that they actually have contempt for parents and anyone else who disagrees with their master plan for this nation. Their mission is to absolutely brainwash the next generation and make them puppets of the state. So far, we've just sat by and watched. Most parents don't even complain. They just accept it as inevitable or they're too busy to be bothered. That is preposterous.

I don't know about others, but I'm tired of feeling helpless and betrayed by these people. Their obnoxiousness is getting worse and worse. It’s almost as if they are laughing at us. This nonsense has to stop.

What we need is an on the ground, old fashioned grass roots effort at the national level. We need a way to get around the “hate America” media and all the self-serving, egocentric politicians. We need a way for the silent majority to make our voices heard.

As a first step, I have created a Blog dedicated to this objective. I named it the Reclaim America Project (RAP). If you, too, are ready for action, and would like to be a part of this movement, please join us at Reclampro.townhall.com, We would appreciate your thoughts and input. Let the RAP begin!!!

The Cult of Academe
Anybody remember Allan Bloom and his book, “The Closing of the American Mind.” It should not come as a shock, that the NEA is engaged in indoctrination of progressive, humanist values devoid of absolute values springing from their belief that there is nothing higher in authority than the intellect of man. Academe was exposed by Bloom in the mid-1980’s as having embraced an activist counter culture agenda committed to the eradication of all elements of morality. He, a homosexual, was profoundly disturbed by the zeal of his peers in attacking the underpinnings of the student’s values and beliefs without having a meaningful replacement handy to guide them through matriculation and the next life. Now, the NEA has found the replacement belief system. It is a fanatical commitment to a combination of eco-faddism, rabid anti-orthodoxy (religious) in the form of humanism and the exaltation of hedonistic obsession with deviant sexuality with the illusion of no consequences. The cult is institutionalized in academia. The average NEA member and teacher of our children has no idea what they belong to and may be as shocked as the parents at what they are asked to teach. But they are powerless to change the system. Opting out of the system is the only solution. Public education has become an abysmal failure and a horribly destructive influence on the greatest nation that has ever existed.

Not just the NEA
Check out the MLA (Modern Language Association). Should have nothing to do with politics, yet . . .

The NEA
Gramps got it right in a nutshell: "Boot the NEA". Why?
I taught in public schools for 30+ years. We teachers were FORCED to join NEA, and pay their exorbitant fees, OR we could NOT be members of our own state education association!
THAT'S how they treat teachers! Then we were constantly bombarded with lots of their propaganda in the form of publications. The money they could have saved by eliminating all of that junk (we filed in our wastebaskets) could have reduced our fees by half!
The NEA is all about money, politics and power, PERIOD. That organization couldn't care less about students, teachers, or education!
Not only is that organization useless, but it's very, very dangerous as far as education is concerned...and it's the LAST organization that should have ANYTHING to do with the content of textbooks for our schools. To say that the NEA contributes to public education in any way would be a joke, if it weren't so serious.
The money should be going to educating the PARENTS of our public school children. BEFORE a child enters kindergarten, his/her personality, values, temperament, potential for formal education, etc., have ALREADY BEEN FORMED BY THEIR PARENTS! So the schools have to work with the children whose parents have already "messed them up"...along with the children by which their parents have done right! And with all due respect for GOOD parents, there are far too many BAD parents out there. THEY'RE the major obstacle confronting public education. The government can throw all the money at its disposal at public education; but to no avail. More and more money won't help at all. Neither will government programs. That's been proven over and over! But if something could be done to convince apathetic and/or dysfunctional parents to be trained in parenting skills, and shown the importance of LOVING their own children and SHOWING it, then (and only then) will our children get the education they deserve!
Best regards,
Hank

Goals of Socialists
In 1963,
quote:
EXTENSION OF REMARKS OF HON. A. S. HERLONG, JR. OF FLORIDA IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
Thursday, January 10, 1963
snip-----------------------------
16. Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights.

17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers' associations. Put the party line in textbooks.

18. Gain control of all student newspapers.

19. Use student riots to foment public protests against programs or organizations which are under Communist attack.

20. Infiltrate the press. Get control of book-review assignments, editorial writing, policymaking positions.

21. Gain control of key positions in radio, TV, and motion pictures.

22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to "eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms."

23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. "Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art."

24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them "censorship" and a violation of free speech and free press.

25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV.

26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural, healthy."

27. Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with "social" religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity which does not need a "religious crutch."

28. Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the ground that it violates the principle of "separation of church and state."

29. Discredit the American Constitution by calling it inadequate, old-fashioned, out of step with modern needs, a hindrance to cooperation between nations on a worldwide basis.

================================
The goals of Communism and socialism is pretty much the same except that socialism uses "democracy" and the "Courts" to take control.

From the Socialist Party of the USA we find their Principles and Strategy
quote:
he Socialist Party is committed to full freedom of speech, assembly, press, and religion, and to a multi-party system. We are dedicated to the abolition of male supremacy and class society, and to the elimination of all forms of oppression, including those based on race, national origin, age, sexual preferences, and disabling conditions.
snip--------------------------
The primary goal of economic activity is to provide the necessities of life, including food, shelter, health care, education, child care, cultural opportunities, and social services.
snip-------------------------
Girls and boys are encouraged to grow up able to choose freely the shape of their lives and work without gender and racial stereotyping. Children are provided with the care, goods and services, and support that they need, and are protected from abuse.

========================================
You might like this site over the socialist party site since it critiques each of the principles and strategy of the socialist party which now controls the Democratic party but not all democrats, thankfully. That is why Lieberman may very well win in Conn. as an independent.

Hopefully, more and more democrats will wake up to what the socialists are doing now that they control the leadership of the Democratic party. Not all democrats are "Liberals" or "progressives" which is also a socialst term from their principles and strategy which says, "While a minority, we fight for progressive changes compatible with a socialist future."

And what will they do if they gain the House and Senate in enough numbers to block Republican filibusters as they do now against the Republican policies that threaten socialism?

"When a majority we will rapidly introduce those changes which constitute socialism" says it all. They have told us "we have a plan" and yet many scoff and say they don't. They do have a plan but can't share it without risking many more democrats going independent.

School for decades has been used as their tool of "indoctrination into socialism." However, only recently have we seen a major shift from just "higher institutions," to High Schools and now even elementary schools.
quote:
Vladimir Ilyich Lenin,
One of the basic conditions for the victory of socialism is the arming of the workers (Communist) and the disarming of the bourgeoisie (the middle class).

Vladimir Ilyich Lenin,
It would be the greatest mistake, certainly, to think that concessions mean peace. Nothing of the kind. Concessions are nothing but a new form of war.

Vladimir Ilyich Lenin,
Destroy the family, you destroy the country.
=======================
quote:
Nikita Khrushchev,
We can't expect the American People to jump from Capitalism to Communism, but we can assist their elected leaders in giving them small doses of Socialism, until they awaken one day to find that they have Communism.
============================

Everything we were warned about in the 1960's about socialist's desire to control the nation, is coming true. Again from the Floor of Congress in 1963
quote:
5. Capture one, or both, of the political parties in the United States.

16. Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights.
=======================================

That 2nd one has been their most successful tool. For 175 years "we the people" determined what we wanted, now a group of 5 people out of 9 on a Court Bench decide what "we the peopele" want when we "self-govern." Self-government isn't "fair" except to the majority as limited by their State and U.S. Consitutions because those constitutions limit what government can do which got its power, in our system of government, from the people.

Remember what our Founders said and what socialists are teaching our children to deny.
quote:
As explained by George Washington:

The fundamental principle of our Constitution . . . enjoins [requires] that the will of the majority shall prevail. 7

Thomas Jefferson agreed:

The will of the majority [is] the natural law of every society [and] is the only sure guardian of the rights of man. Perhaps even this may sometimes err. But its errors are honest, solitary and short-lived. 8

Does this original principle therefore mean that minorities are to be disregarded or trodden upon? Of course not. As Jefferson further explained:

Though the will of the majority is in all cases to prevail, that will to be rightful must be reasonable — the minority possess their equal rights which equal law must protect. 9

While the minority is not to prevail, with its constitutional guarantee of “free speech,” it does have the “equal right” to attempt to persuade the majority to its point of view. The minority does have equal rights, but equal right is not the same as equal power; the minority is never the equivalent of the majority and should never exercise control over it.
http://www.wallbuilders.com/resources/search/detail.php?ResourceID=118
=============================================

Much of our voting population has been educated under socialism's influence on education. The socialists wisely used the concept of incremental change toward socialism and used the education of our children for much of that change with each new graduating class a fraction closer to full indocrtination of socialisms principles and strategy.

Even though no nation has survived as a "power" under socialism, the socialists never give up trying to force a nation to accept socialism as the system of government "by choice." We may have gone to far to turn it around. We better hope that is not true or we will end up like France.

Evil?
I'm not surprised at all. In my opinion, outrage comes from the too-common misconception that Liberalism is simply conscientious or rational objection to Christianity, Americanism, family values, reality, etc.

Truth is that when people devotes themselves to lifestyles that betray True Conscience, Common Sense, and, yes, God, they become evil.

At that point, their reason for breathing become to dull the pain of conscience with debauchery and delusion, and to corrupt the people whose goodness they hate.

Plainly, today, Liberalism is Evil...is The Anti-Church of Evilness. To a True Believer, good is evil and evil is good.

Believe that, or don't, but the world makes a whole lot more sense if you do. Find another way to explain away their currents of affinity for homosexuality, criminality, pedophelia, Islam, Communism, abortion, infanticide, etc.

Liberalism is the "Anti". A liberal country will be anti-nationalistic. A liberal judge will be anti-rule-of-law. A liberal church will be atheistic. And, yes, a liberal school system will be anti-education.

Sears' Article: The Curious Case of NEA
All of you posting comments on this NEA piece should have "Grading the NEA", a booklet available here:

http://www.family.org/resources/itempg.cfm?itemid=1399&SourceCode=OL06XRCS

All that Sears said about the NEA is true of the AFT
(American Federation of Teachers), another teacher's
Union that's just about as bad about promoting the
liberal agenda. If you want to do something to fight against these 'unions', and the power they wield, buy several of these booklets ($3) and get them into the hands of teachers you know. They contain very explicit instructions for teachers to cancel their membership in these subversive organizations. Sears is right on with his analysis of the NEA, and has also written a very revealing book "The A.C.L.U vs America", which is a real eye opener, clearly documenting how the ACLU has almost destroyed our cultural foundation, and at taxpayer expense! Every patriotic American needs to get this book as well.

What is so difficult
about just letting kids be kids? Why can't we stop sexualizing grade schoolers? Shouldn't society err on the side of protecting the most impressionable? What is the imperative to teach prepubescent kids about sexuality and focus almost exclusively on the esoteric parts of it. What conceivable benefit is it to a seven year old to hear about homosexuality, fisting, beastiality, sado-masochism, fetishes, gay marriage, etc.? These are not normal behaviors as the word normal is usually defined. What ever happened to reading, writing and arithmatic?

[Redacted from my post on another thread]

I loved the movie, but I guess never realized it was a book.

I will have to read it.

Not that it's their responsibility or field of expertise, but they voted on it and approved it.

I guess it really is a political thing with them, then.

school
I teach my children to treat everybody as they would want to be treated. I reserve the right to teach my children about sex and sexual orientation as i seem fit. i do not want someone teach my children anything outside of my religous beliefs. This is why i send my children to private school. otherwise i to would home school. This way at least i know my children will be ble to read and write and do math.

justaguy
The movie bears only the loosest resemblance to the book. The book is much more about Rico in basic training and OCS and is primarily concerned with: why do soldiers fight? It asks qeustions about the values of a society and why they might be worth fighting for. The book has been required reading at West Point for this reason. One of the biggest letdowns of the movie was: NO POWER ARMOR!!! What happened to the CAP trooper power suits?? Read the book for yourself. People are actually working on the power armor concept, which is based on neuro feedback "muscles" that amplify your movement and strength. The suit would have built-in weapons and be able to sustain damage from a heavy machine-gun.

Liberal Idiots
When I went to the NEA website posted above and looked an another page (http://www.nea.org/lac/index.html), I saw:

"Congress Adourns (sic) for August Recess"

That pretty much sums it up. The NEA is in "business" to further political causes, not to help students.

It just confirms my very poor impression of most teachers.

Starship Troopers
Is the movie by the same name based on this book?

The Sassy Scottish Lizzard...
says thankyou to Jeff for dropping by to visit at my blog! I appreciate your feedback. I have tried to comment at your blog, but there seems to be a problem. I have tried at ValientForTruth's blog as well. Ah, well. I agree with you on your entry about the book "Starship Troopers". The book was one of the formative influences on my political thinking.

Two Questions
Two questions that EVERY Federal and State Leaders needs to be asked!

Question no 1: How much do YOU earn as a Senator from this great State that you serve per year? Please all income from your position as an Elected Official?

Question no 2: Do you know of ONE Elected Official in Washington DC, or any Elected Official in any United States of American State, either now in Office or that is running for ANT Office, Federal or State that REALLY cares what the majority of the people they represent desire?

NEA and secularism...

The NEA doesn’t care what parents think. They are about radically secularizing the American educational philosophy from its founding principles. Many parents that are able have abandoned the public school for private or home schooling. As you say, the tragedy is that many students are left as a captive audience for indoctrination into modern liberalism.

The educational philosophy of Reformer Martin Luther was the same philosophy embraced in American education:

“I would advise no one to send his child where the Holy Scriptures are not supreme. Every institution that does not unceasingly pursue the study of God’s Word becomes corrupt…I greatly fear that the [schools], unless they teach the Holy Scriptures diligently and impress them on the young students, are wide gates to Hell.” [from Luther’s Works: The Christian and Society]

For centuries, American education included religious and moral principles as part of student instruction. There is no question of the academic success of that philosophy. However, there have been great changes in recent years. Beginning in 1962, the courts ordered a completely secular approach to public education:

Voluntary prayer was forbidden;
The inclusion of Scripture was terminated;
Elective classes on religion were halted;
The Bible was ordered out of school libraries;
Ten Commandments displays were ordered removed;
Religious artwork was covered;
Religious content in student papers and speeches was suppressed;
Invocations were excluded from graduations and athletic events;
Students were disciplined for bringing their personal Bibles to read during free reading time;
Traditional Christmas programs were halted, as was the practice of students giving Christmas cards;
The names of previously celebrated holidays (Christmas, Thanksgiving & Easter) were changed to become completely secular (Fall Break, Winter Break & Spring Break).

There are scores of other similar rulings and policies that have established public education as an aggressively secular principality.

Significantly, following the implementation of a new educational paradigm based on the official exclusion of basic religious and moral principles in 1962, educational scores plummeted, evidenced by the dramatic decline in college-bound students and SAT scores. By 1972 the average SAT fell from 970 to 900.

The time history plot of this data is dramatic. For the previous decade the average scores were consistently 970 plus or minus 10 points. Starting in 1962 there is a steady decline over the next decade of 70 points to the new average of 900. This average held consistent for 2 decades to 1994.

[Source: Four Centuries of American Education by David Barton, http://www.wallbuilders.com]

The new educational philosophy is a failure, but just as liberalism is a failure its adherents will never admit it.

People like Smitty
Make me question whether I can belive in conservatives sometimes. They are intollerant of others. But then again, the librads are too. So, I guess all I can do is love the people I love and belive what I believe. If I have come to a conclusion through logic and history and it is the same conclusion that biggots have, this does not make the position wrong (or right).

I guess, since my little dragon is not my child, mate, or ward that her life style is none of my business unless forced on me. If it were different, I might give advice. And it may or may not be critical of life choices made. But with the relationship we have, I will leave judging of the people on this board to their level of knowledge, accuracy of logic, and political opinion. Not their personal life choices. Selah

I didn't know I'm in a malicious cult. Thank you for informing me. You may want to stop dragging your knuckles, though. It looks painful.

gay and lesbian issues in the classroom
Robin has said an email full! The homeschoolers in Missouri can count 20 minutes of homeschool for every 60 minutes in public school. That told me something right away. I worked as a high school college prep composition and literature teacher and as a high school and elementary counselor. I worked with wonderful teachers, maybe even some who were gay or lesbian. The majority of homeschoolers in my daughters area of the state homeschool for the purpose of keeping their children away from the pro-homosexual agenda. However, since her brother was a gay man, who died of AIDS, my daughter and I have seen both sides of the issue. We homeschool so our kids can have a quality of education, broad and advanced beyond what their public or private school counterparts are achieving. So if NEA were really spending all those tax dollars on truly educating our public school children, we would have voters educated to make sense out the liberal nonsense. Otherwise, we must homeschool! Believe me! We have tried changing the system from inside!

JohnUnderhill
It is obviously not that obvious. However, that they choose to make that a priority at all is telling. Christian religion cannot be touched nor is anything considered conservative given a voice.

Further, why are not our teachers mostly and only concerned with the teaching of our children the basics, knowledge, that which can be known?

Feelings are not knowledge.

after nosing around
It seems that Sears (no surprise) has mischaracterized the NEA's motives. The NEA's motives are not to promote gay marriage, but to promote anti-discrimination of gays.

The following is excellent rhetoric though:
"Which is why their elected leaders decided that, before anything else, the first thing our teachers have to do is win popular support for homosexual “marriage.”
That’s right. The all-knowing members of the NEA decided that what our kids need to know – more than math, geography, grammar, science, or computer skills – is what men and men see in each other, why women and women fall in love, and what our government and society “owes” those who practice homosexual behavior."

I as the reader get a vivid image of a teacher telling his kids on the first day of school "Allright kids, put down you books. Before we do any of this school stuff, you're going to learn how to promote gay marriage". This is what the NEA wants right? Right.

Jannieb
That's an intriguing comment. We too have found that the teachers who are so tremendously gifted and enthusiastic are not huge supporters of the local union. It is the teachers who need the protection of the union that are so involved in strengthening the local union.

When we discussed our decision to homeschool with my son's teachers and principal they all responded with a resounding "that's terrific." All three, master instructors with loads of experience, said that public education cannot meet every child's needs - especially the bright ones. It was a real eye opener.

It does make one wonder why the NEA continues to worry over political issues not a part of their mandate towards their members. I believe the only way we can curtail their influence is for more parents to withdraw their children from the public schools for alternatives and force politicians to confront the fact that public schools do not serve their constituents.

It's a mental illness
and the dominance of the NEA and our judiciary and educational establishments are another reason for keeping "them" out of the military, they're a malicious culture annihilating cult.

Protected not defended
Their "values" such as this have to be protected and mandatory because they cannot be defended in the realm of reason. That's why they preach diversity in everything but ideas. In the teacher's unions and on college campusses we have all color and gender of people who think alike. Or the ones who don't believe this indefensible crap are too afraid to make waves.
Wherever liberals control you have tyrrany.

r0_d1
Yup, you nailed our problem on head. That's exactly it. We're just jealous.

You don't really believe that, do you? If so, you are easily fooled.

I am selling a bridge over here, if you're interested.

Jannieb
Are you perhaps speaking of Rockwood district?

Ineteresting, if so.

nea
Someone may have already pointed this out, but I think the label of UNION is actually inaccurate when regarding the NEA. At least, in Missouri, the NEA pretends to be a union, but I was never forced to join (retired teacher)except at one large school district where the dues were practically mandatory. They also called the night before the general election to be sure I would vote for a Democrat, so I lied and promised.I found their "local" attitudes offensive, and I certainly never felt that they had any real power. I think that perhaps the NEA is just a club for BULLIES! Now, of course, they have intimidated so many new teachers and so many of them are education lobbyists and they have so much money to contribute to the Democrats that they are indeed quite frightening. But their local members who "join up for union protection" are quite frankly the least talented teachers who usually can't even qualify for NEA lawyers to defend them in contract arguments. I taught in public schools until I couldn't take it anymore. I was rated a master teacher. I became a guidance counselor.
I encouraged my daughter to homeschool her three children. I help;so does my husband, also a retired public teacher. We cannot see public schools as a good place to send children.

Its a powerful trend
One tough to stop, unfortunately.

That the group that is given responsibility of teaching our children puts a higher priority over feelings than basics is astoundingly sad and dangerous.

It demonstrates the devolution of our society from that of high standards based on provable assumptions to that of terribly subjective emotions. This change leaves us all, mostly the children, empty of much of the knowledge we once took for granted.

To those who think their cause is just, let me ask you at whose expense and at what cost?

Parents cannot fight from within
I am speaking from experience here. I live in a conservative rural community with a fairly old fashioned attitude towards public education. However, the teachers' union is the driving force behind every decision made by the school board - administrative hiring, curriculum choices, teaching assignments, the school calendar. You name it, the teachers' opinion is held first and foremost.

Someone above wrote that we should enroll our kids in the schools and fight tooth and nail to change from within. Good luck with that. A fine gentleman in our community served on the school board and every decision he made was discussed in his son's 5th grade classroom by the teacher. That would be during math, you know. The teachers have a captive audience with these kids and they use it to promote their own agenda, often foregoing actual academic instruction discuss pressing matters like their contracts. We have tried to change things on a grassroots level, but when certain teachers start overlooking your kid or holding them to a different standard because you've been deemed a "troublemaker", you wonder if it's worth it. We decided we couldn't wait around for change and have decided to homeschool. It was the saddest and most difficult decision we've ever made. And probably the best.

Attach the money to the child
and privatize education. Why is it when it comes to healthcare, the liberals always point to Europe, but when it comes to education, Europe is ignored? In Europe, the money is on the kids head and the parents select the school to benefit from that funding. If your school is teaching this kind of drivel, you simply enroll them in a different school and the money follows. The schools that succeed are the ones that give the parents what they want, not the ones giving teachers what they want. See John Stossel's archives for several good articles on this.

Unions are for labor issues
When unions get involved in these social areas they are beyond their expertise. Recently here in Massachusetts, Newton to be exact, a close in, upscale, old money and yuppie suburb of Boston where a million $ home is below average they noticed that the standardized math test scores-MCAS here- were going down in the elementary schools. That is a disaster in a place like that. Upon investigation they discovered that the #1 objective of the math curriculum is--and I kid you not--diversity. I guess in some cultures 2+2 is not necessarily 4--especially if you don't feel likeit being 4. Another case, in the 2nd grade in Lexington, another Newton like suburb, they were teaching a book about 2 princes getting married. Many parents complained. I heard one of the supporters on a talk radio show. He had a daughter in the class--and by the way mentioned he was a PHD in microbiology. When the host asked him about the fact that everywhere gay marriage is put on the ballot it is defeated, his answer was that there is a lot of ignorance out there. That's what he thinks of anyone who wants to teach their own children their morals. Nobody was trying to stop him from reading the book to his kid, but he was in favor of forcing it down your kid's throat.
That is why I vote against education levies now when I didn't in the past. The NEA is whacko and there is no competition. When there is fair competition I will vote for reasonable ones again. I think it was a survey in NY that proudly announced that public schools are almost as goos as private schools. What they didn't emphasize is that public schools spend twice a s much as privates for each kid. Think that would work fo GM? Our cars are almost as good as Toyotas and they are only twice as much. But if you don't buy them our self esteem will be hurt. What an ad campaign.

Brown v Board
Things went south with the American public school system with Brown v Board. The Supremes could have taken the case and ordered that funding be properly equalised for all state schools. Instead, they amazingly decided that what needed to happen was "integration", that by ordering that black children and white children must be proportioned in classrooms that educational outcomes would equalise.

Ever since then the US public school system has been viewed by anybody with an agenda as the means by which that agenda could be made a permanent part of the national life.

Public education in the States is a lot like the Vietnam War. Public schools' mission statement would fill an encyclopaedia. It's little wonder that nothing gets accomplished.

In that sense the notion of accountability testing that Bush 2.0 put together was brilliant. It's a tiny little idea when you think about it. After all if you were considering buying stock in a company which would you trust more, a financial statement written up by the company's own accountants or by a good outside auditing firm?

Similarly, why would you trust a public school's own assessment of its students' academic prowness?

What everyone doesn't get.
I think the implications are far more overreaching than just homosexuality. The 'liberal agenda' as a whole is the problem.

Since at least the late 1950s, the 'liberal agenda' has been first and foremost to remove any sense of right and wrong. Those who truly and proudly identify themselves today as 'liberals' hate the 'silly' notions of good and evil, right and wrong. They, instead, want to believe in 'shades of grey'. A man murders 6 people, it's society's fault for not giving him free healthcare. Someone rapes a 4-year-old, he's mentally disturbed. Slaying the unborn isn't 'wrong', it's a 'choice'. Perverse behavior is a 'right'.

The 'liberal agenda' has been to slowly file down society's wall seperating good and evil, right and wrong. We've gone from a society that found "I Dream of Genie" contraversial because Barbara Eden showed her navel (admitadly a bit extreme to consider the navel 'offensive') to a society where Abbercrombie and Fitch markets little shirts to 12 and 13-year-old girls with the words "With a pair of these, who needs brains" across the breast.

Now we're heading to the "hey, homosexualiity is normal". I'm sorry, but regardless of what you think of the moral value of homosexuality (personally, I don't find, at its most basic level, that homosexuality has any moral value at all...that is I think it is neither moral nor immoral), there is no way anyone could call homosexuality 'normal'. It is, by the dictionary definition, a perversion, but the 'liberal agenda' is one that says "To hell with facts, everything is 'normal'."

It gets worse, though. Why so much strenuous objectin to non-embryo-destructive research, but absolute support for embryo-destructive research? Surely it has nothing to do with science because every day more and more evidence is produced that shows that there is utterly no greater value for embryo-destructive research, and that non-embryo-destructive research not only permits the very same value, but even MORE value than the embryo-destructive research. So why the 'liberal agenda' support?

Google Peter Singer and you have your reason. Peter Singer is a poster child for the 'liberal agenda', and their notion that there is no such thing as good and evil, right and wrong. Peter Singer has been labeled by the New Yorker Magazine "the most infuencial philosopher" of our time...by 'liberals' of course. He is also a man who believes that there is nothing immoral with slaying a living infant baby, regardless of its health, nothing wrong with breeding humans simply to kill them and harvest their organs, and that the life of a cockroach is just as valuable as the life of a human.

Put quite simply, Peter Singer is legally insane. In a court of law, a person is declared insane if they lack the ability to tell right from wrong. Any person who finds nothing morally objectionable about the assassination of a healthy 2-month-old baby, IN FACT, cannot tell right from wrong.

And he is idolized by 'liberals'.

His and the 'liberals'' agenda is identical. They want to remove any notion of good an evil, right and wrong. What you are seeing by the NEA is simply actions trying to move toward a society that lacks any semblance of morality or ethics, plain and simple.

Gay Marriage in the Classroom?
How does gay 'marriage' have anything to do with childrren learning how to be productive citizens? This is not a case of toleration of a minority, its forced acceptance of deviant sexual behavior. From here its easy to win 'acceptancxe' for euthanasia, forced abortyion, and legal drugs.

David

Cowboy up!
If the NEA goes forward with this agenda, I hope our president and the governors have the cajones to do what must be done - which is follow Reagan's example with the air traffic controllers union - and fire the whole stinking lot of them.

I'd rather my child not attend school for a year while the house is being cleaned than be fed all this politically biased and anti-moral rubbish.

It may not matter. I'll likely be home schooling my daughter before she reaches 4th grade anyway.

Just a comment
I have two blog entries in my blog on what is needed in education. Click on my name and take a look. Unfortunately, Town Hall is screwed up, so you can't post comments, but I think the ideas are valid.

NEA
A very sensible solution to fixing America's schools is abolishing the root cause of the majority of problems...the NEA!

Those who do, do . . .
Those who can't do, teach.

This comment is not intended to be an individual or general accusation against teachers; it is a principle of the NEA.

This is a fine article from Alan Sears. He has broad conservative support.

Thomas Sowell says that if you want a solution to what have been done to institutional education, then shut down the "schools of education". This would encourage communities to seek out teachers that can "teach" because they have also "done".

Bill Bennett has said repeatedly get the Federal government out of general public education. The only meaningful contribution the Federal government has ever made in America is in the area of “civil rights”. The legitimate Federal function was to referee the conflict. Once the Feds stopped being referee and joined the conflict, it became the schoolmaster from whom there is no appeal - hence the sole, legitimate justification for the NEA is obviated.

That which is everybody's job; is nobody's job! Once the Feds are out of the classroom and back in the referee position, communities can take responsibilities for public education. The Fed can resume its referee or “watch-dog” role.

Further, the alleged crisis of "insufficient teachers" is a myth. The actuality is that there are insufficient recruits for the NEA. NEA and their allies, the liberals and MSM, perpetrate the falsehood of shortage in order to expand their influence. The real problem is that communities no longer call the shots in educational policy and cannot hire the “best candidate”. Despite the involvement of most school boards, the NEA heavily influences qualification and selection of teachers.

Finally and most importantly, the constitutional freedom of religion in public schools must be re-established. No longer should the ACLU be allowed to deprive communities of the rights and advantages of starting the school day with prayer. ACLU should have to face criminal charges if found interfering with constitutional freedoms.

Outlaw Public Sector Unions
The only way we'll ever cure the ills going on in the government schools is to kill the government unions.

In their wisdom, our predecessors made sure unions for government employees were illegal. They knew, and our experience has proven, that there is a dangerous conflict of interest when government servants start dictating public policy, because the servant's interests and the public's interests are often at odds. This prohibition lasted until the Kennedy Administration over turned that long standing principle (in order to organize pro-Democrat voters, naturally).

The NEA is the worst example of public sector employees putting their interests over the interests of the public they are supposed to be serving. They are a wholly owned subsidiary of the Democrat Party (or is it the other way around?) and are primarily concerned with promoting Left Wing political agendas, whether it be homosexuality, wacko-environmentalism, or socialism.

The NEA's willingness to destroy our children's innocence in order to promote the gay agenda is just the latest assault on the public.

The only way we'll ever get control of the schools back is to outlaw teacher's unions. As it stands now, it is the unions who dictate how schools are run, what the curriculum will be, and what the school budgets are (by throwing truckloads of money behind their preferred school board and town council candidates). Hapless municipalities are confronted with battalions of union lawyers who browbeat, extort, and snooker understaffed local governments into outrageous teacher contract give-aways.

The NEA and its state and local affiliates has become a giant education cosa nostra, far outmuscling and outspending any candidates they don't like. They have the money and the clout to get their own elected to office. They control elections at the local level today and are the single greatest source of local campaign funds.

Thus, you have a union that can buy and put into place the local politicians that are supposed to negotiate teacher union's contracts at arms length with the union! It's like the UAW controlling who will be the CEO and board of Directors of GM!

Why do teachers have any say in what the curriculum is? Union lawyers insisted on it being put into teacher union contracts. Why did they do that? Because the NEA is a political organisation first and foremost which serves the Political Left in this country. And Mission #1 for the Union is to indoctrinate this country's children to become the next generation of Leftists.

NEA
The unions need to be re-organized and refocuses to do what they are supposed to do, work for the teachers.

As a relatively new teacher, I have first hand knowledge of the NEA and it's local affiliates.
First, you have to join. If yo don't, they still get a fair share payment to cover the costs of negotiations, etc. However, the fair share payment is the same as annual dues.

Second, you have to opt out of having your dues pay for political lobbying. The way to do this is so convoluted as to be impossible.

Third, they absolutely fail to do their job. In most districts, a first year janitor (nothing against janitors, they have a valuable function) has more job security than a 4th year teacher.

It is not about GLBT
I have no beef with your life style. If you are hetro or not. I love our little Glascow Worm and have many friends who I see daily, some of whom are GLBT. But that is NOT THE POINT!

As a group, the elites in this nation are obsessed with sex and sexuality. If they were so obsessed with food, they would all be gluttons and 500 lbs. Sex, to them is more important than math, reading, history, or any other subject. After all, you can live on welfare quite well without being able to read or add, but no one can possibly live a celibate or monogomous life. It is just not (in their warped minds) possible! And since this is the most important aspect of life, how can they resist teaching it in every way and at every opportunity?

Look at our art. Look at our music. Look at popular books and movies. Even though G rated films outgross R, no one makes the G rated ones because they don't tell the truth that everything is about sex.

My opinion is that sex is something that happens between two people in love. If one of them is not me, I am not interested and don't think anyone who is not part of that couple should care. But that is just me.

NEA
Where to start ...

There are so many different aspects to the problem that it is hard to know where to start discussing it let alone know how to fix it. But I am certain of the basics - decertify the NEA!

While I have a broader view than most of you (I'm almost 70), I can well see that I had a better public education than did my children, or presently by my grandchildren. I was educated in southern Calif. with oriental, latino, black and other white classmates who went to gym class every day and were schooled in real academic subjects. Completion of homework was mandatory, respect for teachers was demanded, and parental involvement was a given. I have no problem with the fact that physical punishment was a rare, but yet very real consequence for those who flaunted the rules.

Fast forward a decade, and everything educational went south with the liberal/hippie debacle. In my view that was the beginning of the end for quality education in our public schools, and the primary reason we have deteriated to the point we find ourselves in today. The culture of the 60s is what controls the NEA today, as well as the vast majority of those in secondary education. To find a college professor that is not a flaming liberal is like finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.

It used to be that a college student could, and would, challange his professor on a point being discussed. Ask a current college student what it is like to try that these days - instant bad grades and, if not careful, no chance of graduate school. Any present day student will tell you it is a "go along to get along" evironment that requires that the professor gets the answer he wants - not necessarily what is correct.

No, I am not a bible-thumping, born-again conservative. I am, however, a person that would love to see our education process get back to where we are able to compete with the rest of the world; where all adults can find Europe on a map; where they know that New Mexico is part of the U.S. and not south of our borders, and where teachers are not recruited from the lowest percentile of the graduating class.

1. Decertify the NEA
2. Test teachers on their abilities
3. End "instant" tenure for college instructors
4. Monitor college professors and their teachings (yeah - I know all about academic freedom, I also know about propaganda, indoctrination and out-and-out lies).

Needless to say, Ward Churchill is not at the top of my academic scholars list.

Tell me I'm wrong!

How do you spell incompentency? N-E-A
N.E.A. = Neanderthal Educators of America.

Q. What's wrong with the above?

A. It is mean spirited, ugly, and grossly inappropriate slur!

Q. What should be done immediately to rectify this unwarranted, vicious offense?

A. Apologize to all Neanderthals.

?Education?
John Dewey's usefulness to this nation was used up many decades before he assumed room temperature.

Dewey's disciples would do well to break away from the ever new and changing currents of uncertainty and return to those methods and ways that have always worked throughout the centuries.

Schooling our children is a local affair that begins in the home. Any one parent is more important than the entire NEA. They were not elected by any of us and none were appointed by our elected representatives. Our elected representatives and our appointed officials must understand we do not want the NEA educating our children.

Collective bargaining is now akin to blackmail. We have laws concerning blackmail. Maybe those laws need revisiting and revising.

GEM

This isn't all the push
They are also working in tandem with other liberal environmental groups to turn all kids into enviros. The GOV'T even provides kits for teachers expounding on how wonderful predators, especially wolves are. Granted the Wyoming kid who finds his dog chewed up and eaten or his 4-H lamb or calf half eaten by wolves isn't going to be fooled, but what about all of the kids who live in cities? There are lots more of them that will be converted.
Let's face it alternative lifestyles, the worship of mother-earth, etc are religions and as such should not be allowed in our schools, and should not be tolerated by our government, much less supported.

A Plague Upon Their Houses
A plague upon the houses of the NEA and any adult who would use innocent and gullible children to advance their personal agendas. It takes a very low form of life to manipulate the minds of our most vulnerable members of society. Teaching should be imparting information, not opinion. I would say shame on the NEA, but I doubt they have any.

Underhill...
I looked at that press release. I'm curious. The NEA claimed that the AFA was using a smear campaign, but they did not clarify their position on the matter. It's like their response was just "They're lying! They hate us" But didn't give us any proof.

The public school system has lost their focus. They are trying too hard to push unacademic issues like diversity, self esteem, and sexual politics and not enough on reading, writing and arithmetic. It's time for a change.

NEA

"De-unionize" the public school system. Why? Because the primary function of a union is to promote the interests of its members--meaning the interests of non-unionized parents and their children will forever be secondary to those of unionized teachers, principals, custodians, etc.

Just as an FYI
This is on the NEA's website about this topic:

http://www.nea.org/topics/discrimination.html

Union
The NEA needs to be kicked out of the classroom and resume the job of advocating teacher pay and work conditions. The Auto Workers union does not decide on what kind of car to build.....we got into this mess when politicians began to listen to this lobby in the 60's. They were sucked in by the low teacher pay and worsening working conditions...now, the union has taken over the "functions" of teaching, and you can see the results. Boot em out...make teachers professionals with individual contracts. Get politics out of the classroom and expect teachers to teach their subjects......when kids can read and write they can read about all the issues and make informed decisions....on their own!!!!

OK the nea is evil, what can we DO?
I'm all for letting children BE children. Not having a thought about sex until high school (except for maybe these: girls - yuch, and boys - mean kind.) But how do we DO IT?

Parents homeschool a growing number.

Private/Christian school enrollment is up.

BUT THEY HAVEN'T SOLVED THE PROBLEM.

I suggest we have to put our kids BACK in school and be active IN it. It's the only way it will change. Take it back from the perverts.

Morals, vaules, natural instinct denied
I just read that the number of publishers for books in this country have dwindle down to a very few, and that the publishers are publishing materials for text books for the schools, under the instruction of the N. E. A.. The books contain stories of children who are actually healthy children, protrayed as handicapped kid's in wheel chairs, omitting stories of factual history, on inventers and hero's of history. It has become increasing clear that the schools of today have one main objective, and that is too corrupt the children, put them on drugs, if they must and give them condems, and teach them about homosex, transgender, bi-sex and any and all deviant lives and how to live them. There are actually Massachusetts Politians that have signed onto a bill, to try to decrimialize men having sex with each other and beastiality. I am fifty one years old and I never even knew what beastiality meant, had to ask my husband what it is, but soon kindergarten children will probalby be test on it. People are born Male and Female, grow and reproduce, this is a natural corse of life and how we all came to be, what they are teaching children today goes against the grain of human likeness and corrupts and preverts all of human's natural ways. This is unhuman and human kind will detroy its very foundation if this insanity continues. Parent wake up and denie this fate for your children, humanity depends upon it.

Hmmmm
I do think that family and parenting norms need to be left to the parents. I don't really see where the schools need to get into GLBT families and how we operate. I am a transgendered woman as most of you know, and I agree that the NEA schould probably stay out of this except where there is actual discimination or harassment. Children have enough to learn without going into how my marriage (or anyone elses) operates. That creeps me out.

All too true
Which is why I opted out of the system.
