Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

The port of Lazaro Cardenas, on the west coast of southern Mexico, is controlled by Hutchison Whampoa, the same giant Hong Kong shipping firm that owns the ports at both ends of the Panama Canal. Chinese-made goods will be carried by Kansas City Southern Railway de Mexico directly to Kansas City, where freight will be distributed east and west and on to Canada.

Kansas City Southern was originally a belt railway around Kansas City but, after buying various Mexican rail companies and tracks, KCS controls a 2,600-mile artery from Lazaro Cardenas to Kansas City. KCS President Michael Haverty was one of five U.S. businessmen who met with President Bush, Mexican President Vicente Fox and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper at their March summit in Cancun, Mexico.

Mexico was at first expected to pay for the big, expensive machines to conduct high-tech gamma-ray screening for drive-through inspections of containers, but Mexico declined the honor. SmartPort has applied for a $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration (i.e., to get the U.S. taxpayers to pay for the machines).

The Kansas City City Council has already earmarked $2.5 million in loans and $600,000 in direct aid to SmartPort, which would build and own the facility and then sublet it to the Mexican government. The cost could go as high as $6 million because Kansas City has an existing lease that runs through 2045 on the same property with the 107-year-old American Royal, which uses that land for its annual livestock/rodeo/barbecue event.

The last piece in finalizing this project is getting the U.S. State Department to approve the Mexican operation on U.S. soil by signing off on what is called the C-175 document. It has already been approved by U.S. Customs.

Meanwhile, NASCO (North America's SuperCorridor Coalition Inc.), another nonprofit business organization, has taken on the mission of building an "international, integrated and secure, multimodal transportation system" from Lazaro Cardenas through Kansas City and up to Winnipeg, Canada. This will allow Mexican trucks to haul goods along a 12-lane superhighway through the heartland of the United States.

WOW.....
...a "Townhall" columnist who is not advocating open borders.....

This is TOTALLY UNCONSTITUTIONAL
THIS IS THE REASON HE WILL NOT ALLOW A FENCE. It would control the flow of traffic. (As well as those pesky foreigners.)

Neither Canada nor Mexico see anything wrong with this because one is corrupt and the other is too pc to be able to say anything.

So then China can just mail us the nuke, won't even have to make a rocket for it. Because China will be in charge of inspection at their end, Mexico at this end and America goes BLUEY. After that it will just be the road to nowhere.

Only this question will remain: Didn't they say they just wanted CA, AZ, NM and TX? So sorry, they WILL ALLOW us to keep KS.

Pipe Line
And the other point of the piece is that once again we are going to put American port workers and truck drivers out of a job by diverting this freight business through a Mexican port. "Who's getting kick backs here"? When is our Government going to wake up. When all that is left in the U.S. are low paying "Service jobs", Who are they going to be providing "Service" to? Our govt is leading us on a path of destruction.

city council
Don't forget the Kansas City city council has approved this!
They could have just said "No". The people who live in Kansas City should have been paying attention to the council meetings. Why haven't the citizens and newspapers been making lots of noise about this?
This is the kind of stuff that apathy gets you.

Kansas City Port
Mrs. Schlafly has at least one of her facts wrong. She has obviously confused the Kansas City Southern Railway (KCS) with the Kansas City Terminal Railway. The latter operates only in the Kansas City area. KCS was never a terminal railroad. Prior to the acquisition of its Mexican lines, KCS (headquartered in Kansas City) had lines radiating in five directions out of its hub in Shreveport, Louisiana. Its major lines went to Kansas City, New Orleans, Port Arthur, and Dallas.

The concept of inland ports is not new. For example, there is one in Winchester, Virginia, just 30 miles from me. There may be issues to be resolved in connection with this particular proposal, but why should we pay higher prices to support $140,000-per-year longshoremen? Competition based on increased economic efficiency is a wonderful thing, and I'm all for it. It makes life better for us.

It's in our self-interest to do it.
$140K per year!!!!??? Doesn't anyone think that's preposterous pay?
More importantly, let's remember how the longshoremen had the whole country hostage with their threat to strike and wreak havoc in the economy.
Also, keep in mind that our Pacific ports are maxed out and can't handle the volume that exists now, and imports from the Pacific rim countries are only going to keep increasing.
We should ABSOLUTELY use Mexican ports and introduce some much needed alternative ports of entry.
The whole xenophobic reaction to Mexico having 'sovereign' territory in KC is silly. Mexico, and about 150 other countries already have sovereign territory in the USA. They're called consulates and embassies, and they have caused no ill effects.
By the way, having 130 million poor people across our border can't bode well for the future. It's probably a good idea (for OUR self-interest) that we help Mexico get out of it's 3rd world economy, or we risk the perils of a violent revolution led by anti-American extremists.

Good idea/Bad idea
By passing $140,000 a year manual laborers is a good idea, as is promotion of trade. Anything that destroys the power of the unions is a good idea.

Having the customs inspection in KC is a bad idea. I would love to read the detailed justification for putting the customs inspectors in KC and not at the Mexican port. Either way the inspection time should not be any different, no more facilities would be needed in one as opposed to the other. The containers could be inspected upon arrival in Mexico, sealed, and shipped, upline.

Shipping Corridor Deal . . .
I have never bought into the conspiracists fear of "One World Government" and the "Tripartate Commission" as threats to America but I am beginning to have second thoughts.

Why is Bush so reluctant to control our southern borders? Control of one's international borders is the sine qua non of a sovereign country. Why are we creating sovereign Mesican territory in St. Louis to by-pass American ports? Is there more than just saving money on "overpaid" longshoremen. [By the way, have you ever worked as a longshoreman? They earn their pay certainly as much as pampered, overpaid athletes. How come nobody bitches about them?]

Having a Mexican "port" in St. Louis taking jobs away from American workers is radically different from having an embassy in Washington or a consular office in any other American city. Chaparral63 is dead wrong about the KC Mexican port being just like having another embassy. So far as I know, the sovereign Mexican embassy in DC has not cost thousands of U.S. workers their high-paid jobs.

Not a Foreign Trade Zone
Foreign Trade Zones have been used for putting additional value or holding onto goods before entry into the US economy. However, the companies operating the Zones had to submit "paperwork" to US Customs when the goods left the zone. Those companies were responsible for those goods as well so when a problem arose, they had penalties.

Even shipments originating overseas had some modicum of inspection at those ports. If the first inspection occurs here in the United States by Mexican officials, US Customs is shirking its responsibility to the US citizens.

International companies have always sought to reduce material, labor, and compliance costs. It's no surprise it is being tried here.

Ever so slowly
The covers are being pulled back on the Bush Open Borders Agenda, and W is being shown for the internationalist he truly is. While he is right not to allow foreign invovment in national defense situations, he is more than willing to seek foreign involvement in everything else. And thank goodness that it is Phyllis Schlafly who is exposing this, as no one can accuse her of being some conspiracy theorist...what she is reporting is backed up with facts. This is what happens when your choices for President are bad and worse, you end up with the slightly lesser of two evils.

Treason from the White House???
I am constantly amazed at the actions of George W Bush when it comes to Mexico. There is no logical reason for the schemes to turn this country in to a vassal of Mexico. The Kansas City port deal is an easy way for our enemies to bring in large quantities of chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons. The Mexican government has no love for the American people. We should never forget that during WWI and WWII the Mexican government aligned itself with and aided the Germans.
The whole Bush Administration is a disaster. The only thing worse would be one run by Democrats. The Democrats commit their treason in public.. the Bush Bunch does it under the table.
I certainly agree with Tanabearand Lydia. For those who think differently.. I do not hide behind a cute username...

I voted for him, and I am so sorry..
I never heard of this - it was hidden from us (yes, hidden - intentionally).
We must all work to stop it RIGHT NOW just asd we did Dubai Ports fiasco. It is effectvely the first major step in the complete disassembly of the United States as a soveriegn nation. And don't kid yourselves, Bush is now showing his true colors. My God - I voted for this man. It was him or a traitor - what choices. Tancredo (sp?) 2008!
No more "go with the party" for this boy.
Look folks, this has to be stopped at ALL COSTS - even civil war...

To Chaparral63 and Gary
Labor unions are responsible for the working conditions that are safer and better-paid. Remember the beginning of our Industrial Age and the sweatshops that killed, maimed and forced long hours for a pittance?

The fact that union leaders have become so corrupt doesn't seem like a legitimate reason to dump Americans who pay a heavy tax load in favor of illegals with junk equipment, no regulatory burdens, and wages low enough to suck that much more from a tax structure so far in debt already that the USA is realistically bankrupt.

The Mexican inspection station is the KC/Smart Port or something like that and the article points out the real dangers, something a disturbingly large amount of Americans prefer to ignore.

Competition is one thing, folks.
Foreign intervention under our own national leaders who swore to protect and defend our Constitution that requires national sovereignty is another.

Because of our loony environmentalism allowed by the same national leaders, our natural resources are locked up. Mexico is loaded with natural resources, so why should we be helping them? We bailed them out years ago and still send money. They are so grateful that they've invaded us and demand 'their' country back from the gringos - by the way, shouldn't we be offended by the word 'gringos'? It's said with disdain. I'd call that racism, hate speech, xenophobia directed at me. Should I complain to Kofi?

I don't know if the longshoremen make that $140,000 a year and have a hard time believing it, but if so, so what? Capitalism allows everyone to better themselves, IF you're willing to work your tail off.

Liberals have created a welfare, 'nanny' society that too many people have been happy to join. Clinton resurrected Jesse Jackson and class warfare that hadn't been heard of in years.

Enthuse about losing our country and living a third-world existence because you're jealous of someone working hard to pay a large part of your life support.

Phyllis Schlafly
Phyllis Schlafly is the only woman I would vote for if she4 were running for President. If you don't know anything about her - do a search and inform yourselves. She was truly conservative before conservative was cool...

Why It makes Sense
China gets the jobs and America gets the wealth. That's the deal now-a-days. Why shouldn't China be able to ship us more of the goods we need without us being held up by the unions for transportation costs?

Window into the soul of Bush and CO
What's interesting to me is how quite this has all been done. If they were really proud of it they would talk about it in political speaches. The real aim is to nix the dockworkers out of their jobs.

The question to ask is, Who benefits? Wall Mart and other for sure. In other words, screw the little guys, help out the big guys. Typical of this crew.

But what about people who have purchased land near the corridor. I'll bet somebody is pulling a Hastert.

Phylo out.

I've rung this bell . .
in every forum about our borders for the last three weeks, so why are some of you so dumbfounded?! This is not the first time this has been brought up, but everyone was tunnel-visioned on the fence and the amnesty, they never even aknowledged my posts, ( as recently as last night ).

That said, evrybody take a deep breath and ask yourselves the best question: WHY? I believe this started as a response to the European Union of the late eighties. There was much ballyhoo about what the EU would do to the global situation, and how it would dwarf the US economy and trash the value of the dollar. Breaking the longshoremen's stranglehold was not the original intent, but a percieved bonus by the architects of this plan. As to KC, . . what a bunch of idiots they would be NOT to jump at this economic boon to their community! If it was your town, you'd be behind it too, especially when the council told you it would just end up down the road in another community if you passed on it! So, let's not be too hard on the Kansans, its not their fault.

The best arguments against this are: 1. The EU is a dismal shell of what it was expected to become, and its member countries have even worse unemployment than my community, ( 9% ). The evil dreaded Euro is right about on par with the dollar, . . a little higher, perhaps, but far from burying it! Also, the members are always on the verge of dis-enrolling and the "constitution" tha holds it together is the most ridiculous conglomeration of pork and bull imagineable. The continued existence of the EU is FAR from guaranteed.
2. The NAU would require a tribunal to decide disputes, much as the NAFTA tribunal that recently ruled ( luckily ( in favor of the US, ( CA, in particular ), when a Canadian firm sued to force the market acceptance of a gas additive forbidden under California's strict pollution guidelines. Such a tribunal will trump even our Supreme Court, thereby directly undermining our sovereignty.
3. The borders would be more porous than ever. Mexico certainly has stricter penalties for illegal entry to their country than we do to ours, but Mexican government jobs practically come with a marquee sign for posting today's bribery exchange rates!
The solution is simple: say no with our votes and our letters to our representatives and , most importantly, PUSH FOR THE FAIR TAX on both the federal and our local levels. The passage of the fair tax would leave all the Eurasian markets in the dust, eliminate the unfair tax breaks given the black marketeers, money launderers, etc. and free up thousands of IRS workers for re-deployment to border security and immigration processing.
All that said, I don't believe this was a plot to fool us, so much as a plan conceived and believed in our best interests long ago, and we might never have seen it coming, were it not for 9/11 and our increased security conciousness! The crafters should step back and re-assess its neccessity and impact. I'm sure they can be convinced of their error or they will offer evidence to the contrary. The duplicity really only came about when border security came to the fore, and the plans were already in the works! Pray for wisdom to find our elected leaders!

To regular

Your comments are well said.

The good news is that the new Port Authority won't have to spend much for relocation as there should be plenty of local Mexican citizens already available for staffing.

Frankly, my larger concerns would not be the jobs, but the issue of national security. Mexico has a significant crime problem and bribery is a national economic tradition. Consequently, the level of confidence that one can have that such a depot will not be used for purposes other than those strictly stated in the charter is pretty low.

As an interesting aside, in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, the term "gringo," often is used to refer to Mexicans. Yanqui (Yankee) or "Norte Americano" (North American) is generally used to refer to US citizens. It appears that their geography classes aren't much better than ours.

The primary driver
It sure doesn't sound like a good idea to have a first inspection in Missouri, but the primary reason for the proposal is that greedy unions are content to shut down international trade in order to preserve wages at $140,000 per year which should be closer to $40,000 per year. And if the job can be reliably done for $10,000 per year, then that should be the approach.

I would bypass them too, although I don't the freight should travel so far inland.

Can't they crack the boxes open in New Mexico? Or, heck, do it in Mexico.

Please don't take this wrong....
But I think several people who have commented here--as well as the author, I am sad to say--might do well to read a book on economics: Thomas Sowell has a very good book out "Basic Economics"--please pay particular attention to Part VI (The International Economy). Considering all the comments of 'Greedy' this that or the other thing, it would not be time wasted to read the whole book.

I love Phyllis.
It now seems clear that the American people have been betrayed by our own government. Conspiracy theorists have been ridiculed for as long as I can remember, but there is no longer any question about the treason committed by our elected officials.

George Bush is a filthy traitor. So are the Senators and Congressmen/women who are forcing amnesty on Americans. We are living through the end game. The destruction of America has been underway for almost i00 years. Now the traitors don't care whether we know it.

Take a look at Antonio Gramsci's plan for the destruction of Western culture. That destruction was considered necessary in order to destroy America. Gramsci targeted Christianity, the patriarchial model of the family, the media and the arts as tools to be employed in his demonic formula.

The most insidious weapon he identified was the take over of the schools. Just look at America today. Every one of those institutions has been corrupted, and our society shows the effect of that corruption. Our children are ignorant and totally self involved. They don't have a clue about anything.

When you look at the media, you see Fox News touted as "Fair and Balanced". I think Fox News was created to regain the trust of the American people. I think it is a big fraud.

Ask yourself why the Beltway Boys have been pushing amnesty. Ditto for Tony Snow before he was promoted. Why has Fox not even mentioned this corridor? Why have columnists previously considered to be conservative suddenly pushing amnesty, even on Townhall? Why has Fox not had Phyllis Schlaffly as a guest? You would think this corridor would rate at least a mention.

I saw a comment by a poster that refers to civil war. That is not too far fetched. Has anyone really looked at what happened in New Orleans, where the police disarmed citizens, all citizens, during Katrina? The government needs to disarm Americans. Don't think it won't happen.

This country has been set up for a catastrophic terrorist attack. George Bush has refused to close the borders. God help us all when the inevitable happens. As bad as it will be, the real threat to us all will be the implementation of martial law, and the final push to disarm the people.

I know. I sound paranoid to myself, but our government has been shipping our jobs over seas. It has been chipping away at the middle class for years. America is being deliberately reduced to a debtor nation without the ability to stop what is being done to its people.

I say it again, I am glad that I am an old man. I consider myself blessed to have been born here, and to have benefited from the gift the Founding Fathers gave us. Ben Franklin said that they had given us a republic, and advised us that it would be up to us to keep it. I don't think we will. We can thank scum like George W. Bush for that.

Shipping Corridor
To think I voted for Bush!! This corridor is all part of the very quickly pushed One World Government. Forget about shuting down one union. In the over all picture they are just peanuts. We are all sheduled to become a part of the lower class unless we are already members of the wealthy elite. I am solidly middle class but with the taxes going up to build the trans corridor across the entire nation and also to support all the illegals we will have very little remaining. I live in rural N. Tx and the trans corridor will come within 5 miles of us even with everyone in attendance adamently opposed to it. It will be 4 football fields wide with very few access roads. Think of all the crop land it will take. It to my knowledge it was ordered by executive order and not even voted on by the congress. Who wudda thunk we voted for a dictator.
Raven

Sorry, but Mrs. Schlafly overreacts
Gary is right...Mrs Schlafly overreacts. There are few people in public service that I respect more than the legendary mother of the conservative movement. But on this, she is philosophically off-base. As a Kansan and a former resident of Kansas City, I can only see this deal as benefitting a slothful metro's economy. It is called the free enterprise system. Of course the labor unions and the class warfare folks will oppose it...and some otherwise well meaning conservatives too. Kansas City's council approved it:local control, anyone?

Nuttyism vs. Conservatism
Schafly, et al, are getting perilously close to black U.N. helicopter sightings. The Howard Deanesque wing of the movement helps us not. By the by, Bush is not a conservative.

Oh, Lawd! Mescan customs in Kansas City? How can that be? The same way that there are U.S Customs people in Toronto. I've been frisked by them.

You Luddites wring your hands and nash your teeth all you want. But, for the greater good, traders will find a way around uneducated, manual laborers who make $140,000 a year. The only losers will be a few longshoremen. After all, free-market, democratic capitalism is about benefiting the greatest number of people possible, by the greatest amount possible.

Economic Boon????
Bakedbones said we "Kansains" (may I mention Kansas City is in MISSOURI) would be idiots to not jump on the coming "Economic Boon".

Gee fella, I mighten be a bit of a small town county girl from this backwash city and all, but could you be tak'in yer time an 'spaining to me the boon part??

I see hundreds of Mexican's with $10,000 a year jobs straining the local social services, refusing to learn Engish, straining the schools, crowding our low income jobs, and should I mention crime since we have the who new alternative comunity of low income people...

Explain to me how giving up a seciton of the United States located in Kansas City, MISSOURI, and turning into Mexico North is going to make my city better.

Explain how the loss of a swath of my state from top to bottom is going to make it better for me? Can I ask if I will be safer? How many shipping containers will be coming down the road and into my town, none of which will have been viewed by an American anywhere along the line?

Call me an idiot, but this is a bandwagon I have no intention of jumping on.
