Will Congress pass Obamacare by the end of the year?

As part of the "New Era of Cooperation in Washington" which was promised by the Democrats in the run-up to the elections last November, we are now embroiled in one of the sillier offenses against Democracy.

There are about 93 US Attorneys. As you know, eight of them were fired. Why they were fired is a matter for discussion. Whether they could be fired is not.

U.S. Attorneys are appointed by the President. Like most Presidential appointments they serve - in the vernacular of the Federal government - at the pleasure of the President.

The Los Angeles Times' "Primer on US Attorneys" quotes the US Code as saying: "Each United States attorney is subject to removal by the President."

Really? Hmmm. Someone should tell Senators Patrick Leahy (Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee), Chuck Schumer (Chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee - DSCC) and Barbara Boxer (Deputy Chair of the DSCC).

Just to make clear just how MUCH partisan politics is involved in this: Chuck Schumer (chair of the DSCC) is seventh in seniority of the Senate Judiciary Committee. He asked for, and was granted permission to, chair a hearing involving Senator Pete Domenici (about which, more later).

Barbara Boxer, in addition to being the deputy chair of the DSCC is also the chair of the Senate Ethics Committee and wants to open an investigation.

Partisan politics? Never heard of it.

The current theory among Senate Democrats and their allies in the popular press is that U.S. Attorneys should be above, beyond, and away from partisan politics.

Notwithstanding, again referring to the LA Times

Senators have traditionally played the key role in selecting U.S. attorneys for their states, especially when their party controls the White House … Senators recommend candidates to serve as the U.S. attorney, and the president usually accepts those suggestions.

Wait. What? "When their party controls the White House?" Isn't that what someone might call partisan politics?

Not only that, but the LAT reminds us that Federal District Judges - Judges - are similarly recommended by U.S. Senators who are generally attuned to the partisan POLITICS in their home States.

Donna Brazile and I were on Wolf Blitzer's CNN program Wednesday discussing this and Wolf was in full projectile sweat about it. When I pointed out (as others had before me) that Bill Clinton fired ALL 93 U.S. Attorneys when he took office, Wolf said that was different.

I reminded Mr. Blitzer and Ms. Brazile that whenever there is a close Supreme Court decision every major news organization - including CNN - will point out which Justice was appointed by which President. The implication being, I said, that POLITICS might be involved in their decision.

In the case of the US Attorney for New Mexico, there was supposed to be an ongoing investigation into voter registration fraud; a complaint brought by Republicans.

One of the plaintiffs in the case brought to the US Attorney was the father of a 13-year-old boy whose name mysteriously showed up on the voter registration rolls.

According to a time line put together by US & World Report, US Senator Pete Domenici (whom no one - Republican or Democrat - has ever accused of being a strong arm type of guy) called the US Attorney in October last year - more than two years on - to inquire as to the status of another case, as elections in New Mexico tend to be (a) very close and (b) very suspicious.

According to US News:

[The US Attorney] has a brief telephone conversation with Republican Sen. Pete Domenici in which he tells the senator that indictments against Democrats in a corruption case regarding courthouse construction projects would not be handed down before the November election. The conversation ends abruptly when Domenici hangs up.

Ok. Let's take that as read: Pete Domenici asks a question; gets and answer; and hangs up. The "abruptly" part must mean that the US Attorney has not had many telephone conversations with many US Senators.

If there had been charges of irregularities in voter registration brought by Democrats in New Mexico, and the US Attorney had dithered for more than two years, the Dems would be screaming that it's nothing more than … POLITICS!

On the Secret Decoder Ring page today: Links to the LA Times summary and the US News timeline; as well as a section of the US Code which discusses appointments to United Nations-related posts and uses the phrase "at the pleasure of the President" in each one. Also a Mullfoto involving the Mullmobile and a Catchy Caption of the Day.

Crybabies
It is the Damnocrats that are the crybabies! They are whining about 8 U.S. Attorneys and crying partisan politics. They are launching all kinds of investigations and have the MSM all wound up over it. They (the U.S. Attorneys)serve at the pleasure of the president and he can send them packing any time he wants to ... period! The Dems are playing partisan politics and claiming the White House is playing politics! How hypocritical is that?? The Dems are working overtime trying to create the appearance of corruption or incompetence at every turn. The main stream press is in full cooperation mode. It really is sickening!

So, change the subject is the solution?
Its not the facts of the Ramos/Compean trial that now get the head lines, we change the subject and misdirect to this lame job loss of some of the two party systems lawyers who will get other jobs inside the two party evil money cult.

TRY AND STAY ON SUBJECT, THE ATTY GEN. AND KARL ROVE AND THE PRESIDENT HIMSELF WANTED TO PLANT RAMOS AND COMPEAN IN FEDERAL PRISION BECAUSE THEY DID THEIR JOBS AND WORKED TO END THE ILLEGAL DRUG TRADE ON THE MEXICAN BORDER.

IN FACT THE REASON RAMOS AND COMPEAN WERE THERE TO CATCH THE LIFE LONG DRUG DEALER ATTY GEN. GONZALES GAVE IMMUNITY TO WAS THE FACT THAT THEY HAD SEEN THE MEXICAN ARMY MOVE UNITS CLOSE TO THE BORDER THAT MORNING, WHICH THEY KNEW WAS A TIP OF OF A DRUG RUN, AS THE MEXICAN ARMY IS GUARDING THE DRUG LORDS, DRUG RUNNING LANES ACCORSS THE BORDER, NOW BACK ON SUBJECT , JOHNNY SUTTON, THE JUDGE , DHS, AND THE TOP OF THE ADMISTRATION IS IN ON THIS AND WE THE PEOPLE ARE MAD AS HELL ABOUT IT...

The Pleasure of the President
If you have any doubt about the priorities of the Bush administration just google "Taking Charge of Federal Personnel" January 10, 2001 (right about the time of Bush's first inauguration). This policy paper from The Heritage Foundation provides Bush with a blueprint for remaking the federal government so that political loyalty will always come before competence, expertise, and professional experience. Taking out somebody who is doing a good job for the nation and putting in his place a political hack or big fund-raiser wins every time in Bush's world view but has been disastrous for our country. Thus, the Iraq reconstruction. Thus, Katrina. Thus, a $120 million contract to a Halliburton affiliate to run maintenance at Walter Reed when an audit had already shown that this would be more costly. And now, the eight attorneys., who weren't sufficiently demonstrating their loyalty to Bush as theyenforced the laws of the land. If Bush had swept out every attorney in government right after he came in this would have been seen as getting his shop in shape. But to do it now, and to do it selectively with attorneys who had done things embarrassing to the administration like putting Cunningham in jail, then to cover up by saying these folks were fired for incompetence when they had had good performance reviews, is obviously a partisan coup. Not surprising for Bush and Rove to be partisan, but the Department of Justice is supposed to uphold the law and not be pulling up the president's shorts for him. As for "serving at the pleasure of the president", getting political revenge against people on The Enemies List was done at the pleasure of Richard Nixon. That doesn't mean it should be done.

political appointments - who cares?
these are political appointments. it does not matter when or why they are dismissed.

grow up!!

None of this matters,
This family of 7 voters has decided that since the Republicans can't muster a spine between them all, we'll help them anda the Democrats take down America. We intend to vote strictly "D" in '08. We'd rather get it over with instead of letting them all torture us to death.

Gigantic Hypcrosy
Lets see Clinton fires the damn lot of them, and nary a word. Monkeys with the system when an investigation is goiing sour--for him--in the Kansas City office, and the case is moved to Washington.

How do you spell hypocrit--DemMSM.

I watched it
In New Mexico ,during the Gore-Bush race, it looked like Bush was going to win the state, when Carumba!!, the county clerk found 400 votes in a drawer in the clerk's office. The tide shifted, Gore won the state 286763 to Bush's 286417. I'll do the math - 376 votes!

That happened often enough in state and national elections, the US attorney should have been all over it.

Cowboy
posted, "the Bush administration’s Justice Department pursues Democrats far
more than Republicans. 79 percent of elected officials and candidates who’ve
faced a federal investigation (a total of 379) between 2001 and 2006 were Democrats."

Could it simply be that most of the criminal activity was conducted by Democrats?

Corruption in the US
Most of the major cities in this country are run by Democrats. Most government corruption involves the cities because that is where the money is. When one goes after corruption one is going to go after who is in power because they are the ones that are doing it. There are those tha feel that one must balance it out and make sure you proportionally go after Republicans and Democrats. That makes no sense to me. Take down all the criminals. If they are going after a disproportionate number of dems for corruption and they did it what is the problem. These are political appointments and there is no basis for criticizing their terminations. They dems are talking about politicization of the DOJ. What are they doing with these hearings if not polticizing their jobs? Wait I believe that they and the President are politicians.

Firings
So do you think the Republicans would have investigated this firing, if it had happened?

"Bill Clinton Fires Monica Lewinsky!"

I mean, like the article states, she served at the pleasure of the President.

No story, right?

taxfreekiller
You said, "IN FACT THE REASON RAMOS AND COMPEAN WERE THERE TO CATCH THE LIFE LONG DRUG DEALER ATTY GEN. GONZALES GAVE IMMUNITY TO WAS THE FACT THAT THEY HAD SEEN THE MEXICAN ARMY MOVE UNITS CLOSE TO THE BORDER THAT MORNING, WHICH THEY KNEW WAS A TIP OF OF A DRUG RUN, AS THE MEXICAN ARMY IS GUARDING THE DRUG LORDS, DRUG RUNNING LANES ACCORSS THE BORDER, NOW BACK ON SUBJECT , JOHNNY SUTTON, THE JUDGE , DHS, AND THE TOP OF THE ADMISTRATION IS IN ON THIS AND WE THE PEOPLE ARE MAD AS HELL ABOUT IT..."

I live in Texas, so I know that it is true that the Mexican Army has been caught crossing the border. It is absolutely incredulous that this does not get mass media attention. That, along with some of the major weapons that our Border Patrol have found on some of those crossing illegally. They even testified in front of Congress and presented a document, complete with pictures showing some of these. STILL we leave the border wide open.

My question is this, taxfreekiller... I don't doubt what you are saying at all, given the things that are known for a fact, but could you direct me to where you obtained this information about the Mexican army and the drug lords, on the day of the incident with Compean and Ramos?

Gonzales?
Gonzales is a stuffed shirt political appointment but he has done nothing wrong.
Bush should have canned him long ago for what he has FAILED to do but now he must defend that worthless turkey!
He should fire 16 more Democrat Attorneys just to keep Shummer busy.

Liberty;
Been working on my computer.
I have a link to that Border incident someplace.
It is either CNSnews, or NewsMax.
I will remember you when it turns up.

Don't forget
that Gonzalez works for George Bush. This administration is very good at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Why?

I don't know, and Bush is too busy pushing amnesty for illegal aliens, prosecuting, convicting and jailing Border Patrol agents and at least one sheriff, to explain why. Right now George W is clearly on the side of the Democrats when it comes to open borders.

It is worth noting that he is also too busy to address the matter of the North American Union too.

US Attorneys
If I were George Bush right now I would immediately fire 10 democrat appointed US attorneys, and then immediately state on national television that these people serve at the pleasure of the president and can be fired at any time for no reason. I would then further state that each time a mendacious posturing political prostitute like Schuemer or Lahey opened their mouth with their lying propaganda I would immediately fire another 10 democrat appointed attorneys. And then I would do what I said.

karennkc,
are you suggesting that Cinton did not fire 93 attornies for political reasons? "At the pleasure of the President" means just what it says.

Where "Bushies" are concerned, that doesn't describe me. While I voted for this man twice, I have come to understand that he is no good.

As far as Jews slaying innocent people, I think that is hogwash. Certainly Israel is fighting for its existence, and non-combatants have been killed. Palestinians have said repeatedly that they want Israelis driven into the sea. They routinely murder innocent people. Not only in Israel and Gaza, but all over the world.

Homicide bombers, rockets, and whatever else they can use have been employed by Palestinians to kill Israelis. Has that escaped your attention?

I also find your comments about the Old Testament and Holy Wars ludicrous. I think something is wrong with the way you think. Are Christians strapping on bombs and blowing themselves up. Are Christians claiming that they intend to kill everyone who is not Christian? Do you really believe that Muslim jihadists are justified in what they do because of the West??? What is wrong with you?
