Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Where, a few months ago, Giulliani beat (by 5-10 percent) and McCain beat or tied all Democratic comers, in this week's poll, Giuliani loses to Clinton by 3 percent, to Edwards by 6 percent and to Obama by 7 percent. (For a net negative turn around of 10-15 percent for Giuliani). McCain loses worse, respectively, by 6 percent, 10 percent and 13 percent.

As neither the Democratic nor Republican candidates' campaigns (nor their parties' general efforts) have been strikingly strong or weak in the last month, what these shocking shifts demonstrate is the virtual collapse of the Republican brand appeal in the face of the continuing bad news from Iraq.

Unless the numbers shift back by September, Republican congressmen will naturally assume that they are looking at the prospect of a 2008 electoral drubbing along the lines of post-Watergate 1974 or Goldwater 1964 (let us pray they don't add to that list Hoover 1932).

Assuming continuing bad news and bad polling in September, enough Republicans may well support the Democrats' inevitable "out by the spring" military appropriation to allow for a successful override of the president's certain veto. Then the president may try to challenge congressional authority in court (perhaps relying on the 1861 Food and Forage Act, if Congress doesn't exempt their cut-off from that law, which permits an army to stay in the field without appropriated monies.)

Perhaps the president will win in court. Perhaps things will be seen to be getting much better in Iraq. Perhaps fewer Republicans will cross the aisle, and instead stick with their commitment to our national security requirements. Perhaps the Democrats will so grossly demonstrate their unfitness for national leadership that they lose electoral credibility (although their growing electoral strength in the face of their already clearly grotesque irresponsibility makes one wonder what more they could do that might, finally, appall the public.) But a betting man wouldn't count on it.

This year, September looks to be the cruelest month.

Dog Judge: Don't Bother
I have been away from the boards for many days now, but it appears that Thrasy has not matured since I ran into him last. It is useless to discuss any of these issues with him. His only response is to repeat himself over and over and then shout "Checkmate".

But, in the interests of setting the record straight, again, I offer this.

Thrasy is correct in explaining that Bill Clinton believed Iraq was a danger, which is why he ordered an attack. What Thrasy has ignored is that the Kay/Duelfer reports ultimately concluded that the Clinton attacks effectively destroyed all the WMD capacity in Iraq. (Cost of 500 millions and NO American lives.)

Thrasy also reports the misunderstood conclusion that all the intelligence forces in the world thought Hussein had WMD. In fact, most other intel agencies relied on US intel. Its a circular process mastered by this administration. We give the other agencies intel on Iraq, then we refer to that intel as support for our position. But Thrasy loves circular reasoning, so I assume this idea actually appeals to him.

It is indeed worth noting that, except for Britain, no other major player on the world stage felt the "threat" was worth an invasion. Furthermore, the two men who had the most knowledge and the most time on the ground in Iraq BOTH felt the WMD issue was either irrelevant or could be resolved. Both Blix and Ritter were ignored.

Hussein had the same kind of relationship with Palestinian terrorists that our allies have: Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia also send money to the families of suicide bombers. Trying to justify the invasion of Iraq on that kind of weak link is absurd.

And all of Thrasy's defenses of this debacle fail when one pays attention to actual Bush admin officials. Paul O'neill was Bush's treasury secretary and he said long ago that Bush and Cheney wanted to invade Iraq from the day they took office. Now Tenet has supported that idea. Powell will, in all likelihood, write his analysis as soon as his former commander leaves office, and it will probaboly agree with O'neill.

But, thrasy and others continue to parrot the Bush line on the war. They will be like the Black Knight in Monty Python..intellectually armless, legless and quite insane, but still fighting on and on and on for a lost cause.
