Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

Random thoughts on the passing scene:

Someone said that good judgment comes from experience -- which in turn comes from bad judgment.

When I see people dealing lovingly with small children, it makes me feel that there may be hope for us, after all.

Some people are so busy being clever that they don't have time to be intelligent.

A public opinion poll back in 1964 asked if America was worth fighting for -- and 87 percent of blacks said "yes." Today, it is doubtful if any segment of the population would give that answer that often.

Climate statistics show that, with all the "global warming" hysteria today, our temperatures are still not as high as they were back in medieval times. Those medieval folks must have been driving a lot of cars and SUVs.

Doing 90 percent of what is required is one of the biggest wastes because you have nothing to show for all your efforts. But doing 110 percent of what is expected is one of the smartest investments because it can pay off with a big reputation for just a little more effort.

For university presidents, as for politicians at all levels, one of the most valuable talents for the success of their careers is the ability to say things that make no sense, with a straight face and a lofty tone.

I have never seen a skinny cook.

Republicans have good reasons to be disappointed in their Congressmen, especially with their runaway spending and amnesty bill for illegal aliens. However, before Republican voters decide to stay home at the next election, or perhaps to vote for the Democrats, they might repeat one phrase to themselves: "Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi."

Little kids can be adorable when they are asleep. Or maybe we are just so glad that they are asleep that this biases our feelings.

Increasing numbers of people seem to think that it is "name-calling" if you refer to someone as a liberal. There are no inherently negative connotations to the word "liberal." If it has acquired negative overtones, that is because of what liberals have done and the consequences that have followed.

Dorothy Parker's sharp-witted writings used to cut through a lot of nonsense. Ann Coulter is the Dorothy Parker of our time -- an industrial strength Dorothy Parker.

I must confess to a tinge of envy when I saw Jean-Francois Revel's obituary. His death meant that he would be spared seeing the ultimate result of the confusion, degeneracy, and cowardice of the west, which he had written about -- and which I might not be spared seeing.

Can you cite one speck of hard evidence of the benefits of "diversity" that we have heard gushed about for years? Evidence of its harm can be seen -- written in blood -- from Iraq to India, from Serbia to Sudan, from Fiji to the Philippines. It is scary how easily so many people can be brainwashed by sheer repetition of a word.

The criminal justice system cannot be regarded as serious so long as there are such things as concurrent sentences and sentences of community service.

There is nothing so good that politicians can't make it bad and nothing so bad that politicians can't make it worse. Compassion is good but politicians have turned compassion into the welfare state. Crime is bad but politicians have made it worse by going easy on criminals.

Too many intellectuals act as if they are press agents for blacks -- who do not need press agents but who do need the truth. Wherever we are going, and wherever we want to go, we have to get there from where we are right now. Not where we wish we were or where we want others to think we are but where we are in fact.

It is staggering that anyone could be so self-infatuated as to single out their own particular policy preferences as "anti-war." Anyone who is not a sadist or an idiot is anti-war. The only serious issue is how best to limit, deter or conclude war. But responsibility for confronting this issue is evaded by those preoccupied with the moral preening of being "anti-war."

Wow, First Post
I just love the random thoughts articles. Nuggets of thought that can come in very handy, and that trigger other thoughts. These columns are my personal favorites. Thank you Dr. Sowell.

I'm pro-peace...
....so let the American Military kick their ass and get it over with!!

JimmyC: Ditto
Peace through superior firepower.

If you ever had a fussy baby
You appreciate the baby remark.

And it is true, NO SKINNY COOKS. (Though I haven't checked out places like mcD, or the king..)

Skinny cooks:
Check out any health food restaurant like the Good Earth out here in Leftifornia. Bean sprouts, alfalfa shoots, and other boring crap like that.

Not only are the cooks skinny, but there are no patrons!

LOL

Dr. Soowell
Tom Sowell is among the best!

SOWELL FOR BENEVOLENT DICTATOR!!!!

This is from a Fat Old White Guy.

SOWELL
AND I AM A LOUSY TYPIST!!! (see above.)

Community Service
"The criminal justice system cannot be regarded as serious so long as there are such things as concurrent sentences and sentences of community service."

I disagree with the community service part.

Certainly the idea is supposed to be that there's such a thing as a category of crime, or specific instance of a crime, that is minor enough not to require jail time, but yet we still need some kind of non-monetary penalty.

After all, a $1,000 fine is nothing to a Donald Trump. But, 30 days in jail? Is that really a necessary penalty just for having bad hair?

Viola! Community Service!

That said, clearly giving community service as a penalty for homicide is QUITE a different matter altogether.

My personal favorite
observation:

"Increasing numbers of people seem to think that it is "name-calling" if you refer to someone as a liberal. There are no inherently negative connotations to the word "liberal." If it has acquired negative overtones, that is because of what liberals have done and the consequences that have followed."

And I've always thought little kids cuteness (I know, probably not a word) while sleeping was God's way of protecting them...so we don't take advantage of the opportunity to throttle the little buggers...

Love Dr.sowells Random thoughts!
Having referred to his archives of same many times. I look forward to reading the new columns! And a Scottie observed, always makes one think a little deeper.

and speaking of skinny cooks
I'm a huge fan of Dr. Sowell and just as there are no skinny cooks, so are there no intellectually skinny devotees of Dr. Sowell. But his books are like a huge, rich, cheese cake. Infinitely delicious but too much to digest in a single sitting. His regular columns are like the perfect cream puff. Rich, tasty and satisfying. His random thought columns are like a plate of hors d'oevres. Each one a tasty bite-sized morsel, perfectly made, each a different flavor, and always leaving room for just one more.

I don't know if Dr. Sowell would ever consent to be president but whoever is president could do a whole lot worse than having Dr. Sowell as chief economic advisor. As a matter of fact, most of them have done a whole lot worse!

RANDOM THOUGHTS
What a great way to start the day. Top pick...

"Wherever we are going, and wherever we want to go, we have to get there from where we are right now. Not where we wish we were or where we want others to think we are but where we are in fact.

Thank you Dr. Sowell.

Heads Need To Roll

Judgement
"Someone said that good judgment comes from experience -- which in turn comes from bad judgment."

A wise man learns from the mistakes of others.
================================
A quote from a military aviation safety poster:

We must learn from the mistakes of others; we can't afford to make those mistakes ourselves!

Crime problem..solved
Circle an island with Coast guard/Natl guard ships.

Put all violent criminals there.
Drop off some seeds and farm tools.(Maybe a boy scout manual too)
Return every so often when an inmates time is up.
Kill any who swim away.

I pondered this here a long time ago, I see that one of the columnist had similar notions for child molesters.

Concurrent Sentences
They make sense when the modern prosecution tactic is to charge you with twenty different violations when you did essentially one criminal act.

Re: Someone said...
I believe that "someone" was another, like Dr. Sowell, of America's great orator/commentaters. A man, though commenting on his times of over 70 years ago, is still pertinent today. That man? A national treasure in his time, like Dr. Sowell is today, Will Rogers.

Good point, Mr. Sowell...
now how do I go about posing this question to Cindy Sheehan? How do you propose we end this conflict you're so against? I'd love to hear her "intelligent" solution, and hope that it's well thought out. You're right, Mr. Sowell... those who are so "anti-war" are so full of themselves that they haven't thought of the solution, only to be a part of the problem.

Uncle Alby...
You are only looking at community service from the eyes of the criminal. Consider if and how the public is served with community service. Does the criminal need to be supervised (and at what cost) while performing community service? Is his heart really in it, or will he simply be passing time? Is it make work service or something that is counter productive?

And if the consequences of a crime are so insignificant or unimportant that we can simply deter it by requiring community service, perhaps we should ask if it is really a crime at all?

Thank God for Dr. Sowell's Cardiologist
Cardiologists are generally worth their weight in platinum. I got one that is viciously agressive. Dr. Sowell's Dr. is particularly valuable because he is protecting a national treasure.

Dr. Sowell, may you be unfortunate enough to outlive your grandchildren.

Warmest Regards.

This man is well grounded
and chock full of plain old common sense. Why do people like him almost never get exposed outside of the conservative underground? The average citizen doesn't even know such people exist. It's time for that to change.

We need a way for the silent majority to make our voices heard. I know there are plenty of you who are just as frustrated as I am about not being able to do anything. All we need is a way to channel our frustration into coordinated action. As a first step, I have created a Blog dedicated to this objective. I named it the Reclaim America Project (RAP).

If you, too, are ready for action, and would like to be a part of this movement, please join us at Reclampro.townhall.com, We would appreciate your thoughts and input. Let the RAP begin!!!

Oh, man, in his case it should be Life+99. That is the WORST combover in the history of mankind. Where are the Fashion Police SVU?

Modern Day Proverbs
Keep up the good work, Dr. Sowell!

Sure
Yes, random thoughts is an apt name for Sowell’s thought process. Far be it from me to ruffle the feelings of his many devoted fans, but there are many skinny cooks. Community service is a fitting sentence for petty crimes. While civilization may or may not be affecting global warming, blithely ignoring issues relating to excessive fuel consumption is not a good idea. Being called a liberal is derogatory in some circles, just ask Ann Coulter. Speaking of Ann, she is talented but she is no Dorothy Parker. There are many benefits from diversity. Pasta is one of my favorites. Politics is not a dirty word. The alternative is anarchy. Anyone who is not a sadist or an idiot should be anti-war. Strangely, Sowell (and many of his fans) has yet to make such a statement. Many readers would love to see Dr. Sowell become president. But, since being president requires the ability to think through obstacles and problems often quickly, I would prefer one that can figure out how to operate the shower in his hotel room without too much trouble.

Random Thoughts
"For university presidents, as for politicians at all levels, one of the most valuable talents for the success of their careers is the ability to say things that make no sense, with a straight face and a lofty tone."

Surely Dr. Sowell had these two characters in mind when writing this statement. At any rate, this fits perfectly my thoughts about most anything they ever say as I shutter to think of the outcome if we had been saddled with either as President. I still shudder every time either of them is mentioned as being in the running for President in the future.

Thanks, Dr. Sowell, for all your columns but especially for your Random Thoughts which are always a welcome sight.

Just great
Especially the next to last thought. Blacks don't need press agents but the truth, and we need to celebrate the truth tellers. We should not allow men and like Bill Cosby and more recently Juan Williams be savaged for telling the hard truth to us blacks; we are ultimately responsible for who and what we become! It is our fault if we embrace failure and victimhood...not whitey, 'institutional racism', or slavery. We have the same opportunities as everyone esle, we just need to take advantage of them.

Evidence of Diversity
I'll take the challenge and name a few specks, so to speak.

1. Thomas Sowell
2. Clarence Thomas
3. Miss C. Rice
4. Walter Williams
5. Larry Elder

All taken seriously on this post, just as if they are real Americans.

Because liberals had the audacity to dream of a colour blind society, these folks are accepted by "conservative" white folks.

hey Mike...this one's for you...

"Some people are so busy being clever that they don't have time to be intelligent. "

I feel sorry for all you KOS kids .... so unhappy.

Bravo
Many thanks to you Dr. Sowell, your wit and wisdom, gained in your 76 years of experience, is something that we should all pay attention to. I'm not sure I've ever read a column of yours yet, that I did not agree with 99% of it. Please keep up the good work, and if at all possible, try to exert as much influence as you can on all of the politicians and all of the African-Americans in the Unites States.

Flagwaver
Thank God for Americans like you and Dr Sowell. You and others like you are key to saving this country. Knowing how the MSM insists that very few blacks are conservative, I read the comments on Dr Sowell's columns thinking how strange it must seem to them that so many inherently racist whites just absolutely adore him and his work. And not just Dr Sowell. There's Walter Williams, Larry Elder, Star Parker, Herman Cain, Dutch Martin, Armstrong Williams, ... -- all heros in my book.

Reproductive Rights
From Mr. Sowell:

Can you cite one speck of hard evidence of the benefits of "diversity" that we have heard gushed about for years? Evidence of its harm can be seen -- written in blood -- from Iraq to India, from Serbia to Sudan, from Fiji to the Philippines. It is scary how easily so many people can be brainwashed by sheer repetition of a word.

How true. Look at all of the bloodshed that has come from "reproductive rights."

Hey, always Right,
Yes those are very good men and women, but it was conservatives that dreamed of no-slavery! You liberals have tried to steal every good thought as if it was only you who could think it. Mostly a bunch of un-intellectual whiny kooks who have no patience for economic knowledge or reality. You live in a dream world and expect the real world to conform to your utopian idiocy. Tolerance of others is fine, forced integration has been a failure. All it does is give the racists ammunition for their idiotic rantings by "liberals" programs that tell blacks and hispanics that they are not good enough to make on their own, they need the "help" of liberals to keep them down and in their place so as to be used as political pawns. Liberals are the real racists and a danger to freedom everywhere.

AlwaysRight (oxymoron?)
Yes, some liberals and more Republicans (check the votes on the Civil Rights Act) wanted a color blind society in the '60s. How things have changed. Now, liberals regularly label conservatives who argue for a colorblind society and against racial quotas and segregation as "racists." Also, the list you produced would not impress many liberals as gains...they deny the "authenticity" of these minorities because they have had the audacity to stray off the liberal plantation.

Always Wrong
Rich beat me to it.

It was Republicans who freed the slaves. It was Republicans who gave blacks the right to vote. It was Republicans who banished Jim Crow.

It was Demoncrats who fought for slavery. It was Demoncrats who started the KKK. It was Demoncrats who stood on the school steps and refused entry to blacks.

jaze
I'm sorry but I don't know what KOS means. But in any case, I’m actually a pretty happy guy although I don’t like getting old. That quote is very good. There is a certain wisdom in it, although I get the feeling I read it somewhere before. No matter, since it could be applied to Dr. Sowell just as easily as me. It’s only a matter of perspective and you should never confuse opinion with fact.

Rich:
Actually it was the liberals who called for the end of slavery, and most of them were so liberal they were referred to as radicals. You did an excellent job though proving Dr. Sowell wrong by showing how the term liberal is a derogatory remark.

a new slot on givens...
Death
Taxes
Thomas Sowell

The consistency of the 'random thoughts' columns over the years is incredible-

Hey, Doctor Sowell ..........
There are two kinds of people in this world,

AND YOU'RE ONE OF THEM.

Don't fall into despair Dr. Sowell
"I must confess to a tinge of envy when I saw Jean-Francois Revel's obituary. His death meant that he would be spared seeing the ultimate result of the confusion, degeneracy, and cowardice of the west, which he had written about -- and which I might not be spared seeing."

There's still time to turn America around. We need you and your enlightening columns to help do it, so please don't give up yet.

Random thoughts
The old exjarhead gets it right about 90% of the time. But then you do not live to be an old exJarhead if you can not think!

Another old exJarhead

Randomly Thinking
Dr. Sowell, with your concise reasoning and verbiage, always provides cogent food for thought. Please take this, and expand upon it: Cal Thomas in his writing; "No party can lead without addressing security and uncontrolled immigration et al."

Wake-up the Republican leadership. We need you, and other conservatives, to keep this issue at the forefront of the National Republican Agenda.

Neocon, Pat Buchanan, cannot be permitted to be the only voice howling in the wind. This has to be a Conservative team effort. The Demo-gouge wolves must be fought: debated and countered at every turn. This never ending effort must continue until a majority of the voting public sees them for what they are: Commies in sheep's clothing.

Your credibility and itelligence is such that you have a great influence on correctly stating positive, optimistic, outcomes in choosing the right candidates, issues and policies. Your followers are many.

We can't allow the dreaded words: "Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi" ever, never, NEVER, to be spoken in the Senate...

The sad thing is
Those who need Dr. Sowell's words the worst are those who are least likely to read them.
Another hard hitting column and to the point.
I love it when someone whines if they are referred to as a liberal, and I always encourage them to refer to me as a conservative and assure them there will be no offense taken.

Aways ?????
A true "color-blind society" can only exist when all men are judged by the content of their character (why Dr. Sowell & Dr. Williams have always been accepted by conservatives).

A liberal (socialist) "color-blind society" exists when "non-white non-conservatives" are exempt from judgement of character and are granted preferential treatment based on the color of their skin - AFIRMATIVE ACTION (aka racism - University of Michigan).

Apologies for the last post
John Galt's post was much clearer than mine.

History
As the number of white people in America (at the time of Mr. Sowells birth) who believed in equality for people of colour probably was in the hundreds, there were no liberals at all.

Anyone who believed in civil rights for women and people of colour was called called a communist.

The Repub. party was as socially liberal as it got.

Still a "Penny for your Thoughts"?
That couldn't be. We are all so much more enriched by your random thoughts than by the deepest delvings of so many other writers.

Common sense is so very uncommon. And the ability to write with it is rare.

I was especially touched by your paragraph about people dealing lovingly with small children. Many of us know too well this is not always easy, although it becomes so, so much easier when the children are your children's children.

Your observations re Ann Coulter are perfect.

All your "random thoughts" are worthy of comment, but it shall be left to the imaginations of other admirers.

Thank you once more.

I live in Los Angeles County’s San Gabriel Valley. A few years ago when the 2000 census figures were coming available, one of our local cities, Glendora, had gone from being over 70% white in 1990 to low to mid 60s in 2000. A headline in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune read; “Despite an increase in Hispanics, Glendora still lacks diversity”
Meanwhile, just 9 miles away, the City of Baldwin Park (and others like it) went from being around 70% Hispanic, to over 80%.. Yet no such alarms went off over their decreasing diversity. Baldwin Park has even adopted the slogan “Strength through Diversity”
As the years go by, I’m less and less sure what the meaning of that word actually is.

Response to Mike R.
Mike R is a typical left-wing thinker, interpreting everything entirely literally. Indeed, I think Sowell is well aware that there are some skinny chefs, but that has little to do with the intent of his well-crafted message. Keep up the great work, Mr. Sowell, most of us appreciate it more than you think.

Mr Sowell--your'e the man
Once again another insightful commentary from a Renaissance Man of our times. Think and panic: "House majority leader Pelosi". See you at the polls.

Truth, Blacks
"Too many intellectuals act as if they are press agents for blacks -- who do not need press agents but who do need the truth."

They might need truth, but many will be deaf to it. They need fathers more.

Discipline, stoicism, and moral order are masculine-derived qualities. Any society led by women will be emotional, undisciplined, permissive, and chaotic.

I'd truly like to see a poll on the voting habits of fatherless men, maybe Mr. Sowell could get that information for us.

On Skinny Cooks
Dear Dr Sowell,

If you do happen upon a skinny cook, don't trust him.

Response to tommy
tommy is a typical right-wing thinker, interpreting everything entirely figuratively. Indeed, I think Sowell is well aware that there are some skinny chefs, but that has little to do with the intent of his well-worn message. Keep up the gristmill work, Mr. Sowell, most of us have no taste anyways.

Just kidding folks. I will say that I don’t like Dr. Sowell’s style. So what of it? I hear nearly the same tired comments every day I go to the senior center. Sitting with my peers I hear all about the good old days. When I point out that there never were any good old days at least the conversation becomes honest. Here though, Sowell’s comments are lapped up with sycophantic veneration as though Solomon himself was doing the writing. Try and examine the content critically. 1/3 is cliché, 1/3 a matter of perspective, and 1/3 is outright incorrect. In the end, ask yourself: Just what was the intent of this “well crafted” message? You may discover that it was trite rather than folksy. Remember this is the same man who spent an entire column complaining about every little thing on his vacation only to conclude that he had a good time but it was great to be home. My opinion does not make me left wing nor is it typical. I urge all to challenge and refute me. Show how nothing good has ever come from diversity. Compare the works of Coulter and Parker pointing out the similarities. Remember, one of the things that make us different from liberal is that we think; we don’t just react.

Morphing Conservatism
Rich, Mr. Galt, Readhead,

Morphing Conservatism
Rich, Mr. Galt, Readhead,

Conservatives (not Republicans) FOUGHT AGAINST

I. Voting rights for women
2. Voting rights for negroes
3. Open housing
4. An Integrated Military
5. Integrated Schools

And on and on and on. Because of Newt, conservatives began using the language of the civil rights movement to fight the movement. That is why you now hear conservatives talking about a colour blind society, "without noting the irony".

The very people who fought against an open society, now (on the surface) embrace same.

Conservatism is an illusion. Every conservative
congressperson has taxpayer financed healthcare, pensions and a taxpayer financed lifestyle, yet people on this board consistently fight against national health insurance. I'm willing to pay more taxes so small business men/women can provide healthcare for their workers.

If you or anyone in your family has benefited from the GI Bill, Title Nine, home mortgage deductions, driven on the taxpayer financed federal road system or benefited from any other government program and you enjoyed same, you are not conservative, you're delusional.

The USA and other Western democracies are free and open societies. Countries with Communist, Islamic, or other rigid systems prevent the sex, drugs and rock n roll that drive you "conservatives" nuts. They don't allow lilberalism either.

Thomas Sowell for President
"I don't know if Dr. Sowell would ever consent to be president but whoever is president could do a whole lot worse than having Dr. Sowell as chief economic advisor. As a matter of fact, most of them have done a whole lot worse!"

I think he probably had his fill during his time with the Reagan Administration. But, I agree, I would vote for him as well.

Gore and Kerry
In a post entitled "Random Thoughts" I submitted yesterday, I intended to call Al Gore and John Kerry by name but see now I failed to do this.

Yo "always right"
The names you listed are vilified by the liberals as traitors to their race, which is why they themselves deserve vilification. Also, look back at the congressional voting record of the civil rights act and see which party members supported it. Just in case you don't want to take the time, without Republican support, it would not have passed. All congressional members, whether dems or republicans have the same health benefits, so don't go down that road. Greed knows no party. The national highway program was began by Eisenhower. Health care is not a right, but if your want to take money out of your pocket to pay for the health care of others that is your choice, just don't have the audacity to take it out of other's pockets like libs do to give prison inmates viagra.

Conservative/republican
Ralph,

Republican IS NOT synonymous with conservative. Again, the Repub. party was once the socially liberal party.

So called conservative members of congress are quick to boast about their anti-tax, anti-national healthcare bonifides, but none turn down the largesse of the tax money when it comes to their own pockets.

Why should their children have better health care than any other citizen? Why should their pension, which they receive, in full, after one two year term, be better than any other citizen?

Again, if you benefit from tax payer money at the same time you take an anti tax posture, I think that makes you somewhat hypocritical. Listen carefully, the national highways were financed by the taxpayers. The ports, the airports, practically our entire transportation infrastructure, exist because of tax money.

Many so called conservative businesses would fail
if not for tax money. Why do you think so many "conservative" congresspersons fight so hard to prevent the closing of bases in their districts? Give up the tax tit, no way. In some way we're all on that tit.

Finally, conservatism is a myth. Study Ecclesiastes to learn how we flow through time.

For MikeR - Refutation
Chill out, dude, you're taking it wa-a-a-ay too seriously.

Interesting, though:
"I urge all to challenge and refute me."

First you have to say something refutable. When you say "1/3 is incorrect" without specifying *which* part is incorrect, well, certainly no one can say you're wrong.

No one can say you're wrong because you haven't said anything.

Not voting? Prepare to kneel
Because so many conservatives are unhappy with the current congress it is to be expected that many will get even by stabbing themselves and their wives, husbands and children in the heart come voting time. Nancy and Hilary will like that. Jesse, Al, Chucky, Ted and Harry will chortle and wring their lace hankies in pleasure. Our president, as charming Nancy has promised, will be impeached and be stuck defending his policies of the past 6 years in front of a bunch of political opportunists; liberals who hate him because he didn't invent the internet and who care not a whit for anything but power. They will milk the mostly willing media for every moment of air time they can steal and America will suffer greatly for it. We; you and me and our families will suffer! Everyone will be in more danger. Terrorists and terrorist supporting nations such as Iran will take every advantage of the situation. Do the right thing, please. For all our sake vote!
