Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

Random thoughts on the passing scene:

Sometimes it seems as if everybody is trying to rip off his own little piece of America, until we are all torn apart.

A reader writes: "Liberals hold us individually responsible for nothing but collectively responsible for everything."

The last time I saw a Republican express outrage was 1991, when Clarence Thomas told the Senators what he thought of the smear tactics used against him. Before that, it was Ronald Reagan saying, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" Before that, it was probably Teddy Roosevelt.

Too many people in positions of responsibility act as if these are just positions of opportunity -- for themselves. The ones who simply steal money probably do less harm than teachers who propagandize their students, media who slant the news or politicians who sell out their country's interests in order to get re-elected.

A reader wrote: "Have you ever noticed that opinion polls ask the opinions of people who have no expertise in the subject on which they are being polled and publish these opinions as if they were gospel truth instead of group ignorance?"

Judging by the polls, Republican voters' memories do not seem to be as short as Senator John McCain may have thought. Judging by press coverage, the media's memory does not seem to have been as long as he may have thought when he played to that gallery.

A sign of the times: A full-page ad for an Alaska cruise in the left-wing New York Review of Books says, "See Alaska's Glaciers Before They're Gone!" Shipmates listed include Ralph Nader and the editor of The Nation magazine.

The people who are scariest to me are the people who don't even know enough to realize how little they know.

A reader sent the following message, quoting his nephew: "Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented worker' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist.'"

Some of the biggest cases of mistaken identity are among intellectuals who have trouble remembering that they are not God.

Our education system, our media, and our intelligentsia have all been unrelentingly undermining the values, the traditions, and the unity of this country for generations and, at the same time, portraying as "understandable" all kinds of deviance, from prostitution to drugs to riots.

The home run records that made Babe Ruth famous have been broken but one of his records will probably never be broken -- pitching the longest shutout in World Series history, 14 innings. Few pitchers go even 9 innings these days.

"Global warming" seems to be joining "diversity," "gun control," "open space" and a growing list of other subjects where rational discussion has become impossible -- and where you are considered a bad person even for wanting to discuss it rationally.

Is your employer poorer by the amount of money he pays you? Probably not, or you would never have been hired. Why then should we assume that a corporation or its customers are poorer by the amount paid to its chief executive officer?

A review of one of the many environmentalist books says that even if you can't do all you would like toward "living green," you can at least "congratulate yourself on taking small steps to improve the planet." That is what environmentalism -- and much else on the political left's agenda -- is really all about, self congratulation.

Just watching Suze Orman for a few moments while channel surfing is enough to make me feel exhausted.

When I see the worsening degeneracy in our politicians, our media, our educators, and our intelligentsia, I can't help wondering if the day may yet come when the only thing that can save this country is a military coup.

In his book "Income and Wealth," economist Alan Reynolds says that people often form "strong opinions" based on "weak statistics." Unfortunately, that is also true of a wide range of other issues, from "global warming" to "gender bias."

I am so old that I can remember a Democrat, at his inauguration as President, say of our enemies: "We dare not tempt them with weakness."

Wonderful column!
Thank you Dr Sowell. You and Walter Williams are priceless. We need more of you.

Comments on Column
I found the part about a military coup more than a little unsettling, but it perhaps shows the direction the right wing mindset has gone in past few years. "If they are too stupid to understand that what is best for me is what is best for them, then we'll teach them good and hard!"

I agree with about 80% of Dr. Sowell's stray thoughts comments, though he obviously aims at the typical targets: "liberals," "leftist media," "agenda pushing educators." I don't disagree, I just think the "other side" is no less dirty.

Dr. S wrote: "Is your employer poorer by the amount of money he pays you? Probably not, or you would never have been hired. Why then should we assume that a corporation or its customers are poorer by the amount paid to its chief executive officer?"

This is a weak one, for sure. Dr. Sowell says "probably," then uses that for a "why then" question. Apart from that, the trends reveal most profitable corporation are more than willing to jettison labor if it can be gotten cheaper -- even if that means going overseas. Why should the mindset be any different for the executives?

After finishing the column, I want to ask, "Dr. Sowell, why do you target the sins of the left and ignore the sins of the right?" But I think I already know the answer. In today's political environment one doesn't make a living by catering to even-headed citizens who put America first. No, you have to stoke the flames of those on the extremes who so love their parties -- and so love insulting their counterparts.

No, I won't and i don't care what you pay a Stanford student to write for you. You're just getting desperate. :D

Another liberal attacking Dr. Sowell for being smarter than they are. How funny. :D

Civil war inevitable
If a civil war happened in the US, it would be a battle of the control freaks/thieves and those who want liberty. Problem is that most of the people are control freaks and thieves, so the end result is going to be all will become government slaves. Change will only happen when the slaves realize they are indeed slaves.

Hope After All
With the daily barrage of negitive liberal propaganda, it's easy to become discouraged in having hope for our nation as it goes down the "proverbial" toilet. Just when I'm thinking all is lost, I come across articles written by the likes of Dr. Thomas Sowell or Dr. Walter Williams, and realize that there is indeed still hope.

Perhaps even more encouraging at this point, are the posts of so many people that see the awful delemna that we are in. Still, as the liberal press daily and unrelentlessly spue their left and liberal agenda to a nation of mostly politically uninformed individuals, it has finally taken its toll and produced its intended objective; hate America (specifically G. Bush), blame America, and diversify America, making it not the "Land of freedom and opportunity" but rather a national so "diversified" that it has lost its very identity; that which has made it unique in the entire world. This land where people risk everything to come to and live.

I'll contribute $25 toward hiring someone independent (a Stanford graduate student or a professional editor or alternative tbd) to critique one of Sowell's recent articles. Critique will be limited to craftsmanship and logic. I'll be glad to help with some of the mechanics of getting this arranged.

Will *you* contribute some money and energy to this task? Will anyone else? Put your money where your mouth is!

(I have academic credentials at a level similar to Sowell's. I've done my homework re Sowell's recent writings. I even tried to arrange a phone discussion with Sowell; in doing that I had a hilarious interaction with an uppity b*h secretary who seemed to be shocked that someone would want to talk with "Dr Sowell - he's soooo busy doing the most impooooortant things". Politically I am a lifetime Republican.)

This is the third time I've offered $ toward hiring someone for an independent review of Sowell's work. No takers so far.

Military Coup
I accept that these are "random thoughts" and not well thought out "thoughts". However, I am very ill at ease of anyone talking about how we can be "saved" by a military coup. Would have you look at "Seven Days in May" when Burt Lancaster as General James Matoon Scott was plotting a military coup. In addition if an election was held that day, he would have been elected President by an overwhelming majority. Interestingly the reasons then are some of the reasons we talk about now with a Liberal President selling us down the river on defense. I was taught and still believe that the only thing you can't believe in the USA is in the violent overthrow of the government. Again these were "random" thoughts but not one that I would ever have.

Think First
"Notice the attack becomes a personal one while they try and bury the issue."

First you decry the personal attacks, then:
"The problem is, it's far to easy to picture them up to their necks in the BS they are carrying around with them, and keep from laughing at how oblivious they are to the stench."

Then you make them. Personally, I like the personal attacks but I don't whine about others.

"Whenever I see someone attack Dr. Sowell here, I know it is because they can't intelligently attack the points made, present evidence against it and have descended to their primal depths."

Now, THAT I can agree with.

"In the middle of a rant at how stupid you are, pat them on the head, say "Duh, McFly!" and start chuckling. The look on their face is priceless. I have even followed up with a Bif or two and gotten scowls like you wouldn't believe. Try it the next time and see for yourself."

Bif was the one that did the tapping so if you tap them, then your the Bif. I do like the idea of calling them Bif, I wouldn't assault them though. :D

Have a good weekend!

Frustration: Thy Name Is Liberalism
Yes I'd say a common chord has been stuck with the notion of a coup. One of the effects I note every day now is whenever someone gets lambasted on TV for saying or doing something that is not PC enough, it instantly becomes the latest joke and tease. Like "nappy hair" has now become the new "in" joke to describe anyone having a bad hair day. The PC crowd has become a laughing stock of real people everywhere and alas, they don't even realize how wacky they appear to the crowd they say they are trying to relate to.

Critical thinking enjoys objectively looking at all aspects of a problem. Every single liberal I know, talk to or TRY to discuss a subject with becomes very passionate in his declaration that my mind can't grasp it, I'm too dumb, a Christian fanatic, etc. Notice the attack becomes a personal one while they try and bury the issue. Whenever I see someone attack Dr. Sowell here, I know it is because they can't intelligently attack the points made, present evidence against it and have descended to their primal depths. Exercising their primal scream therapy rights because they are not willing to exercise their thinking rights.

It is what I find the most amusing about liberals. They all believe that everyone must be free to say what they want as long as they control what is to be freely said. If you disagree with them, it is self evident, in their eyes, you are incapable of being worthy of expressing an opinion. I find it hard to not tap them on the head and say, "Duh, McFly" as a certain movie character did. Maybe we could start referring to liberals as Bif's for short and then we could cut right to the laughter at their conceit and bully behavior.

The problem is, it's far to easy to picture them up to their necks in the BS they are carrying around with them, and keep from laughing at how oblivious they are to the stench.

A funny exercise guaranteed to have them really PO'd at you. In the middle of a rant at how stupid you are, pat them on the head, say "Duh, McFly!" and start chuckling. The look on their face is priceless. I have even followed up with a Bif or two and gotten scowls like you wouldn't believe. Try it the next time and see for yourself. Then we could start a forum or something and compare notes on who got the biggest laugh, sputter or actual foaming at the mouth!

"Hey Furthest Reaches...

You claim to be concerned about "sullied" reputations of men like Thomas Sowell and Victor Davis Hansen, yet it is you doing the sullying with your ad hominem attacks against them!"

He's not the only hypocrite that tried that. ittakesaretard tried the same thing too. They clearly don't like that Dr. Sowell is smarter than they are, so they try to attack him using his age. It's really transparent. ;)

splendidone
"As a progressive who has been described as an "intellectual," let me add that I am also an atheist and it would be rather difficult for someone who does not believe that there are any gods to think that he is one of them."

If you were actually intellectual you'd know he was speaking figuratively, not literally. That may be too "deep" (again, figuratively speaking) for a liberal.

Splendid One
Wouldn't an "intellectual" realize that his own failure to believe in God in no way prevents him from mentally elevating himself into God's rightful place? Just think to yourself... "what sort of attitudes would Dr. Sowell attribute to those who think they are God?" And then ask yourself "can these attitudes be descriptive of atheists too?"

The quote was quite simple - did you really misunderstand it? Or do you have some self-contradictory compulsion to publicly remind God that you don't believe in Him?

The New Nitwit In Town
Hey Furthest Reaches...

You claim to be concerned about "sullied" reputations of men like Thomas Sowell and Victor Davis Hansen, yet it is you doing the sullying with your ad hominem attacks against them!

Since you seem to think you know better than both of these brilliant men, why not enlighten us will some of your terrific ideas?

You could call your column: Random Thoughts of a Driveby Moonbat...

You said it best yourself:
"With the...pervasive intellectual dishonesty I see on this website..."

Intellectual dishonesty?!?!!!
Now THAT'S a subject you know something about!

Any Military Coup Would be Traitorous
Sowell: "Some of the biggest cases of mistaken identity are among intellectuals who have trouble remembering that they are not God."

As a progressive who has been described as an "intellectual," let me add that I am also an atheist and it would be rather difficult for someone who does not believe that there are any gods to think that he is one of them.

I really like the approving post by a reader who would probably deny being an intellectual, but consider himself to be a conservative, early on in the comments: "There are times when I can understand how God felt just before he put in that call to Noah."

Now, he might not think he *is* god, but he certainly can put himself into god's mental state, or thinks he can.

Don't panic!

Sowell's work has simply deteriorated in recent years.

It's not something to joke about. He is doing a poor job for his readership and his community. He is also diminishing his own stature (He used to be a fairly capable intellectual).

It's a sad state of affairs.

I hope that his friends encourage him to make a graceful exit.

Excellent article. Dr. Sowell has amazing insight.

Glad TX retained the "right of secession." When the coup begins, we'll break away and become the country America use to be. Bye "ya'll!"

CPT Freedom
I’ve noticed nothing of the sort. Furthest_Reaches expressed it well. It is almost painful to watch Sowell’s brilliant mind in economics deteriorate with age.

As for Jimmy Carter’s initial comment; he either is a very slow reader or has little time to read.

Jimmy Carter's slow reading
Have you ever noticed that every book of Sowell's that you DO manage to read is spot on and excellent?

military coup
Mr. Sowell has very much succeeded in sullying his once sterling reputation since 9/11. One hopes he retires while he still has something of a reputation left.

Only the new-styled "conservatives" could support a military coup in this country. Not only is there no real meaning left to the word "conservative," it nows represents pretty much the exact opposite of what it did historically. Quite frankly, that's largely because most of the people with any brains have 1. left the party or 2. are waiting out the Bush administration before getting back involved.

I really wonder if the party deserves to survive. With the abject sell-outs and pervasive intellectual dishonesty I see on this website, I'm inclined to think it does not.

Well...
..didn't mean either as I was talking Turkey. Simply pointing out a country that arguably has undergone military coups for the benefit of the population which actually did benefit the population.

EDIT
Doh! David McCullough

singLOUD
'I can testify that plenty of them are instead butt-kissing sycophants who are more political in pursuit of career ascendancy than any Washington politician. Be careful what you wish for.'

My uncle; who lives in Northern VA, has many military neighbors. When describing the Colonel next door to him, his words were-- "When he looks in the mirror to shave, he is not thinking how can he serve his country, but how can it serve him."

George Washington had the opportunity to stage the first (of what I am sure what would've later been many,) military coup in this country after the victory at Yorktown. His staff was not only willing, but expected him to march his army to assume control of the Continental Congress. Of course, GW did no such thing. He gave a very visible display of giving up power and electing retirement. Of couse, the other time in his career he very visibly gave up power was during his farewell address. Because of this great man; this country has been spared the atrocities of Presidents for life (GW knew he couldn't survive another term and death in office would've been disasterous,) and Military Coups. God knows what else. I'll leave those speculations in the capable hands of Joseph Ellis and David McCollough.

We need another George Washington, (but I would gladly settle for another Ronald Reagan.) A coup would betray the legacy of the man who created the foundations today we are trying desperately to preserve. (Yes I know he had help, but it wouldn't have worked nearly as well without him.)

Do you mean our nation is getting too fundamental and we need the military to make it more secular, or do you mean that we have too many personal freedoms and we need the military to end them?

For a successful coup look to...
Turkey. They have had 3 military coups since the early '60s all sparked by a single concept, securing the secular nature of their government and lifestyle while putting down the rise of Islamic fundamentalism. In fact, the Turkish military has just served notice to it's ruling party that they are becoming a bit too traditional and that Turkey is not an Islamic state, but a free secular society. As the most highly respected institution in the country the Turkish military is committed to the principles instilled by Ataturk after the fall of the Ottoman Empire. No one may have noticed, but nearly a million Turkish citizens have been protesting the islamification of Turkey over this past week. We may need our military to step in at some point and stop the erosion of our founding principles at the hands of the hate America first crowd.

Constitution
Old Man,
Good question. I lean with Liberty in denying the existence of a bi-partit system vis a vis Republican and Democrat. Better lines of demarcation would be Conservative vs Liberal. (Although clasical liberalism lay soley in the arms of the Libertarian Party.)

And piniella, What exactly was "non-sensical" [but then again, you know little about constitutional law.]" When someone starts with "constitutional law" we can all rest assured that the one speaking is a mealy mouthed martinette. "Constitutional Law" when uttered as such is a code word for people who would like others to believe they have superior understanding of the constitution. That is seldom the case. They have, perhaps, a handle on the perversions, permutations, emmanations and pnumbras, but they have no grip on the meaning and spirit of the document.

So enlighten us o wise piniella, what was "non-sensical"?

Military Coup
could be perfectly legal. Those who join the military are sworn to defend the Consitution. And let's be perfectly square here. The Constitution is under full assault by the Liberal Left in this country. The Supreme Court can't even make sense of obviously unconstitional laws, (McCain-Fiengold?, it's a LONG list!).
=====================

Both parties are assaulting the Constitution. The restrictions of free speech by the McCain/Feingold bill is just one of many examples. The immigration amnesty, the socialist programs both parties (medicare prescrip., no child left behind) put forth, etc.

However, to be fair, most American voters have no idea of the history of our nation and that for 150 years, social and moral issues were unconstitutional for the Federal Government to involve itself with.
quote:
The series of anti-New Deal decisions by the Supreme Court angered President Roosevelt and prompted him to attempt to reform the federal court system itself. This included a so-called "court-packing" proposal that would have enabled FDR to appoint an additional six justices to the Supreme Court. Suddenly, the non-political branch of the federal government was caught up in an intense and bitter national political debate. The Supreme Court would never be the same again.
Snip--------------------------
"The Switch in Time"
In the midst of the "court-packing" fight, a series of unexpected events occurred that finally sank FDR's court-reform bill. On March 29, 1937, the Supreme Court reversed itself and upheld a state minimum-wage law very similar to laws that the court had previously struck down. This case was decided by another 5–4 vote. But this time the four conservative justices were in the minority. Shortly afterward, the Supreme Court ruled as constitutional both the Social Security Act and the National Labor Relations Act, two key pieces of New Deal legislation. These cases, too, were decided by slim 5–4 majorities.

==========================
For 70 years we have been assaulting the Constitution but most voters are OK with that assault and so, how do you stop what the people approve whether "Constitutional" or not?

Call for military coup?
Is Sowell quite sane, to be ruminating about a call for a military overthrow of our government? Isn't that tantamount to treason, and shouldn't Homeland Security be watching this individual?

I know he's a far Right ideologue, but before now I wouldn't have questioned whether or not he was a loyal American. Now, I am.

No general qualifies
" When I see the worsening degeneracy in our politicians, our media, our educators, and our intelligentsia, I can't help wondering if the day may yet come when the only thing that can save this country is a military coup."

Sorry, those dedicated to creating a one world government have not forgotten the military.

Please name a big shot general who is not part of the problem.

sorry
should read: that you're pretty sick

anti-socialist
This is what I’m talking about. Joe Kennedy and Margaret Sanger are both long dead and no longer masquerading as anything. Stalin had Trotsky killed. Hitler and many other Nazi leaders may have been homosexuals, but they definitely had homosexuals rounded up and executed. Folks often refer to Planed Parenthood’s early association with eugenics; but that’s as relative today as our nation’s early association with slavery. While your comments are very exciting, you really make very little sense.

Folks: After columns like this one, I am amazed that people still refer to Sowell as a national treasure or think he should be president or on the Supreme Court. How would you feel about your doctor if after a check up he told you that your pretty sick, he doesn’t think he knows how to cure you and you should go out and kill yourself. Because that is exactly what Sowell is advising. He is not talking about civil war or another revolution. Those “other people” are still the people just like the folks here. In some ways, it’s a matter of faith. You either believe in the United States and our Constitution or you don’t.

Please!
The Constitution is under full assault by the Liberal Left in this country
------------------------------------------

This is non-sensical but then again, you know little about constitutional law.

lakestate
"Hopefully the spineless Repubs will wake up and prepare themselves to fight back. They've been apathetic for too long."

I see it differently. It is the real conservatives that have been apathetic for too long. The rest of the Republicans are what they always have been.... big government statists who are every bit as leftist as those in the Democratic party.

Until we admit that we have one heck of a lot of leftists in our own Party and some who don't even realize that they are supporting big government statism, it is going to be very difficult to turn this whole socialist mess around.

The division is not, Republicans good, Democrats bad. Rather, the division is between statists, those who advocate BIG government as the answer to all ills vs. those who advocate limited Constitutional government and individual liberty.

Where does everyone here stand?

Military coup?
And this man calls himself a conservative??? How about something really radical, like all the folks who flap their gums about the poor state of the nation, around 50% according to contemporary polls, actually getting out and voting? Now that would be revolutionary!

You don't need a law degree to know that the 9th and 10th are the joke amendments now.

I don't like the idea of a coup, but I don't see how it would be treasonous.

Read Matthew's Post again
His arguments may hold more solid logic that any of the other rants(yes, they are rants) posted here. One very good way to control a population, other than using religion, is to have them constantly attacking "straw men", while controlling the real agenda in the background. A nutty example is the Anna Smith baby stuff found on the news. There were hours and hours of garbage about her death and that kid. All the while we were spending countless hours trying to figure out the truly ridiculous arcane tax code of this country, just so that we could file our income tax return! All the while, not a word, in the news, about what a joke filing a tax return has become.
Distract the idiots, and complete your true agenda: That is what is really happening in this country.

Coup in a Democratic Republic?
If this coup that Dr. Sowell hopes for has popular support, why would it not just win elections?

Is there any chance in preserving the edifice of what Dr. Sowell thinks is great about America (morality, virtue, conservativism) while destroying the structure beneath that holds it up(liberty, freedom, elections, the Constitution)?

What will Dr. Sowell say after the coup?

"We had to destroy America in order to save it."

I really thought better of you Dr. Sowell.

George Bush, Senior
I knew George Bush Senior should have nominated Mr. Sowell for the U.S.Supreme Court. What a horrible mistake that was. We are still paying for it.

Military coup?
Maybe, he didn't think it but, I had to wonder -

If the military (generals, admirals, etc. get tired of being used as political pawns, not allow to fight a "declared war," restricted and have to lose lives not needed to be lost, underfunded, undermanned, under-equipped, might not some think a "new government" was needed?

However, regarding T. Jefferson and every 40-50 years, there is another solution that happens about every 70 years. It is called a depression. We are due for one pretty soon and those pesky things seem to get the attention of voters. The last one put us on the path of socialism but the other socialism nations, when they woke up, have returned to capitalism, tax reform, entitlement reform, pro-business policies, etc.

Could that happen here. We know it is coming because we can't get reform as long as voters keep sending the same Congressmen back each election.

Sowell wouldn't rund for President because you need a Congress that supports reform if you want reform and our Congress isn't ready for reform.

Polls
Sowell sure hit on a sore spot for me....opinion polls! At least half of the people I know haven't given any serious thought to politics and world issues, and fall into repeating the latest "sound bites" and "main stream media" crap. I hardly take their opinion seriously, but obviously, their group think mentality and "group ignorance" carry as much weight in national polls which helps direct decisions made by politicians (particularly the democratic congressmen and women!) I seriously doubt that many of them have heard serious discussions about the consequences should we pull out of Iraq soon. One of Sowell's many great points!

Thoughts that are not so random
Just a week or two ago I was pondering however will we get our Nation back from the fleckless Republicans and dispicable Democrats who care so little for the Country.
As if reading my thoughts Dr. Sowell writes yet another enlighting article on America as it truly is today.
I love the way Dr. Sowell cuts to the chase and breaks down complicated topics so that those such as myself know that we are not alone though far less articulate than the national treasure that is Dr. Sowell.

MikeR
Nothing dramatic in referring to communists as communists or Nazis as Nazis (both social fascists). Joe Kennedy & Margaret Sanger were staunch supporters of Hitler's Nazis, while Hollywood & the MSM were stauch supporters of Stalin & communists (why they demanded that we go after Hitler - to defend Stalin). People who are anti-communist have Political Correctness (Trotsky) forced on them.

(It is dramatic when communists refer to anti-communists as Nazis, Nazis (Planned Parenthood) refer to anti-Nazis as Nazis, or homosexuals refer to anti-homosexuals as Nazis when Adolph Hitler and "other top dogs" of the Nazi party were homosexuals.)

Military Coup
I too think that we might in line for a coup.

I alos think that many liberals are afraid of it too. So they are doing the one thing that would stop it, in it's tracks, by bringing back the Draft, which would insure that the military would go from the 80 - 90% conservative that it is now, to 50/50 liberal/Conservative.

And the best way to get a draft, would be to insure that conservatives don't join up they way that they do now. And the way to get that, is to allow the sodomites to serve openly.

Once young Conservative/Christian learn that they would have to serve with sodomites and be totally accepting of them, I think that they would stop joining up, and that would bring about a draft.

Group Ignorance?
Is "group ignorance" your definition of democracy?

To dbz77, others
dbz77, let me see if I understand your post. Are you suggesting that the most immediate or largest threat to our nation is Islamic terrorism, or maybe an Iranian nukes or takeover? If so, I must disagree. If your meaning is that maybe I should consider bowing to the Muslim god instead of the Hebrew true God, then the answer would be, of course not. Allah is a false god. If you are Muslim, I doubt if you will find friends here.

Others: I don’t believe that Dr. Sowell was advocating a military coup. I am sure he is a man of peace. I know he is expressing extreme frustration. So are the others. My only contention with the good doctor was on his usage of the word “save”.

A comparison of our times and those of the Founders would be useful, I think. The Founders and their constituency were somewhat in the minority, but they succeeded against really long odds, so much so that they considered the final outcome to clearly be the working of the Hebrew God. By comparison, we, I think, are a miniscule minority. And the Founders never faced an organization such as the U.S. government we now have. By comparison, King George and the British were like Little Lord Fauntleroy out to play. So much for a probable popular revolt.

Random Thoughts
Actually, my comment that Dr. Sowell referenced was 'Liberals hold us individually responsible for nothing but collectively TO BLAME for everything'. But I am thrilled that he used it none-the-less.

Here Are A Few Random Questions?
Why do we even care what the EU thinks? Their population is about to be reduced by 40%, half of the European nations will probably be Islamic by 2100, and by 2050 they will no longer be our "Ally".

Is the China trade deficit such a bad thing when about 85% of the deficit is reinvested in US firms and US Treasury notes?

Why is the GOP so silent about the soon to growth of the AMT? Anyone here make more than $65000 per year, watch your wallets. Your $1000 refund will soon become a $1000 tax bill.

President Reagan never went a day without saying something about our economy. Why is President Bush so quiet?

Why is President Bush so reluctant to put retired DCI George Tenet in his place?

What will happen when Iran gets its nukes? What will happen when they get the delivery systems that will allow them to target not only Tel Aviv, but also London?

What will happen to Amsterdam's night life when there is a majority of Islamic councilmen sitting on their town council? Amsterdam is now 50% Islamic. What will happen to all of the homosexuals, prostitutes, and free dope?

Randomness
Good thoughts Dr Sowell.

It took 43 comments before a certified crazy threw his 2 cents [all he has] into the pot. As usual, drivebyposting wastes pixels on Townhall. This guy has no understanding of hyperbole, that's for sure. By the way, dbp, France wouldn't enter on the side of anyone in anything; and the whole world does not 'love' Bill Clinton. How could a majority of some 6 billion souls love a sleezeball?

Do you think those Liberals going to Alaska might come across some dinosaursicles in the melting ice? If these people had been around millions of years ago, we might still have the dinosaurs and all the other species of the World crowding us out of living space. Talk about your methane. On second thought, if the crazy Liberals had been around millions of years ago, our species would be extinct.

"Our education system, our media, and our intelligentsia have all been unrelentingly undermining the values, the traditions, and the unity of this country for generations and, at the same time, portraying as "understandable" all kinds of deviance, from prostitution to drugs to riots."

I'm not so sure any of those people are intelligent. You couldn't tell from any of their actions.

But, in my lifetime, I've seen these things happening---and I'm not a happy camper. My country has been deteriorating instead of progressing over the years. Going backwards, as it were. My angry thanks to you Liberals everywhere.

Fight the good fight, Dr Sowell---a sentiment used by my college as a motto.

WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!!!!!
.

Hey drivebyposting....
In this hypothetical coup, why did you presume that it would be liberals vs conservatives? That was not mentioned anywhere in the column. Everyone in Washington would be thrown out, the entire selfish Congressional culture of pork barrell projects, re-election bids and deficit spending would be wiped out and eventually those with solid ideas and honorable intentions would take over. It's not a left-right thing, it's a right-wrong one. And what kind of statement is "Conservatives hate the world???" Sorry that we don't like how women are treated in the Middle East or how Chavez is stealing private businesses and putting them under government control or how we frown upon lazy French citizens when they riot when asked to work more than 30 hours a week. We don't hate the world, hate is too strong of a word. We save that for how we feel about liberals.

Sowell Struck a Chord
It is interesting that with only a small portion of his column (the military coup comment), Sowell struck such a chord.

Anyone bothering to wonder why that is?

I think a vast number of people do believe (at least internally) that the political system no longer works for the people. It only serves big politicians, big bureacrats, big business, and various assorted big special interests. The common citizen is just left to survive day by day.

Such a government cannot and will not survive for much longer. How much longer? Very hard to say, but I would not be surprised in the least if we do not see some new form of government in the next 30 - 50 years, if not even sooner.

And I do agree that a military coup (meaning military leaders forcibly assume power) would be a disaster, since as the naval officer above stated, even the highest ranking officers are not necessarily the sharpest knives in the drawer . . . . .

He was NOT advocating a military coup!
Can you people read? Can you think? Clearly Dr. Sowell was NOT advocating a military coup, but pointing out how difficult it is trying to bring about change in Washington. I took his statement to mean that regardless of who we elect, the "culture of corruption" (the wild spending, the single goal of re-election, pork barrell projects, etc) is so entrenched that it SEEMS like the only thing that can save the country is a military coup. It was to make a point, it was not his answer to our problems. Only a liberal would take a statement like that and twist it to mean something that was not intended. Although, that's what the PC Thought Police/Speech Code Enforcers always do....

Rich

It’s ok if you disagree with me, but when Sowell wrote “I can't help wondering if the day may yet come when the only thing that can save this country is a military coup.” That means that certain problems have progressed to the point where the only remedy would be a military coup. That is advocating and I’m not alone in thinking so. Many have commented in both agreement and disagreement.

anti-socialist: what you describe is not a military coup. You often misuse terms like communist and Nazi probably for dramatic affect but it does make me question the validity of your opinion.

drivebyposting
Hey moonbat, what part of "wondering" don't you understand? Re-read what Dr. Sowell said instead of interjecting your own brainless and twisted meaning to it. Read and comprehend... weren't you taught that by your leftist Profs?

"When I see the worsening degeneracy in our politicians, our media, our educators, and our intelligentsia, I can't help "wondering" if the day may yet come when the only thing that can save this country is a military coup."

You're the one in need of the toupee with some brains in it.

Sure eveyone accross the pond is in love with Clinton because he has no backbone just like them... and you. It's much easier to appease than it is to stand up for yourself. (Unless it's over the Internet - gutless wonder)

But even then, wasn't it Clinton that bombed Iraq for 4 days in 1999? And aren't we still in Bosnia? I remember your idol Clinton saying we'd be out by Christmas. I wonder how the Chinese feel about Clinton, since they had their emabassy blown to bits by one of Clinton's misilles? Oh yea, he bribed them with classified military secrets.

And while I'm at it, why do the Islamo Fascists hate us so much? I wonder how much could be associated with what's near and dear to your heart?...

Porn...
Freedom of speech...
Freedom of the press...
Freedom of religion..
Womens rights...
Freedom to dress the way you wish (especially women)
Freedom to drive cars...
Or just freedom in general.

And to think we have brave men and women fighting for you're freedoms. How ironic is that?

Makes you want to join the cause of the terroists -- right driveby? How's about joining the cause of your own country instead of every other one.

Or better yet, just move to France and do us all a favor. You can rub shoulders with all the Hollywood ingrates that make France their home.

I guarantee the first time there's a problem in France... they'll come running to the US with their tail between their legs.

Rand
Ayn, that is. I agree; a retaking of gov't in such a manner is Constitutionally sanctioned, is it not? To the end that the balance of power is returned to the people, for whom it is by, for, and of. Charles Krauthammer mentioned it's not enough to have a democracy (referring to Iraq, and I'm paraphrasing), you need the correct people. Isn't there a movement in New Hampshire to bring 20k people to the free state and start just such a notion by county? Vote right-thinkers in at the local level and you may have something.
Regards.

MikeR
Sorry to disagree, but he did not advocate a coup, only that if we don't get our collective butts together, that may be the only answer. Even T. Jefferson supposed that we would need a revolution every 30-50 years to remind the politicians who it is that is supposed to be in charge of this country. That is the reason for the second amendment, to provide for such a militia that the standing army would have no chance to defeat them. I'm afraid that it may be too late already, the Constitution is pretty much DOA now, the Feds have usurped authority where none is given and run roughshod over our rights in the name of "fixing the depression", fighting the "war on drugs", hate-crimes (don't think that!!), etc., etc., etc.

Time to wake up to the damage done by all the "useful idiots" working tooth and nail to install the United Socialist States of Amerika.

On Military Coup and Reader Reaction
I think forum posters are spending *WAY* too much time on what was a mere 2% of Sowell's column.

I doubt that Sowell is *advocating* a military coup, and I doubt he's putting it forth as any sort of "solution" to anything. He's merely bemoaning the fact that things are getting bad, things are getting worse, and foreseeable trends are going the wrong way. It'll get worse before it gets better.

If we don't find a way to turn things around, a coup may become inevitable. Although, personally, I doubt it. The frog is being boiled slowly, and most likely will not jump.

MikeR
Since when is taking our Constitutional Republic back from the Communists & Nazis who masquerade as Democrats (or RINOs) treason?

(drivebyposting is obviously one of the few survivors of a partial-birth abortion)

For Deacon -- Coup at the Voting Booth
-- FIRST we need to have somebody WORTH VOTING FOR.

Does someone actually pay for this stuff
Whatever Sowell is paid for above column, I'll provide as good or better for 20% less!

Here's my first "random thought" (actually it was
written by Joel Chandler Harris)

ADVICE TO THE WRITERS OF THE DAILY PRESS

"If you've got a thing to say,
Say it! Don't take half a day!
If your tale has little in it,
Crowd the whole thing in a minute!
Life is short -- a fleeting vapor--
Don't you fill the whole blamed paper
With a tale which, at a pinch,
Could be cornered in an inch!
Boil her down until she simmers,
Polish her until she glimmers."

Military Coup
Mr. Sowell said that if things keep going as they are, the only recourse Might be a military Coup. I have to agree. We have had a Revolutionary war, and a Civil War, Now if all the crazies keep trying to over ride our Constitution, it may come down to that!!!!!!!

Nam65-66 is right
In his assessment. I’ll go farther to say that a military coup is treason. Those who advocate it are traitors. These ‘Random Thoughts’ are showing how a once great mind is succumbing to age. That some folks positively drool over Sowell’s writing is almost as alarming as the things he writes.

Military Coup = Sowell Stupidity
Yet again, Sowell leaves himself asking, "why didn't I just buy a toupee with some brains in it back in 1950?"

Uhh, hello? We overthrew the government in Iraq. The problem was what came afterwards, conservatives and Republicans failed miserably.

What exactly would happen after a military coup?

If civil war broke out in the U.S. like in Iraq, I know where I'd put my money. The entire World supports the liberals. Conservatives hate the U.N. and the world. The world loved Bill Clinton. The world hates George Bush. Who do you think the world would support in a military coup?

If France and Britain were to enter on one side or the other of an American "military coup" I can guarantee you it would not be on the conservative side.

Conservatives in this country have painted themselves in a corner. Conservatives have worked really hard at alienating every country in the world, ever moderate American and every liberal American. And they have happily succeeded. Bush has done every thing but literally drag Blair through the mud. Blair's name is mud thanks to Blair's loyalty to Bush.

What you think the moderates who are smitten with liberal media will someone "wake up" when a military coup takes place and start thinking conservative?

Military coup! Ha! Ha! Don't make me laugh.

Stupidest thing going yet.

Coup? I say coup up all the illegals!
As Dr. Sowell so adroitly points out, there are too many PC euphamisms in our society for lawbreakers.

Today seems like a perfect day to round up all the illegals. Just go to one of the Commie Pinko rallies with a REALLY BIG NET and throw it over them.

Then just air lift them, dangling in mid-air, and dump them in Brazil. Perhaps they will find employment there and stay away.

Or give them to Hugo Chavez. They can be his own personal descamesados.

Military Coup
Hi Dr. Sowell.

As usual, your column is a delight to read. I disagree with you on a military coup. I believe that there are books available to the general public that they could read and understand their government's foundations. It is the job of the parents to make sure their children read it.

This way when children grow up to be adults and go to college, comrade can't tell them that 2+2=5. They'll not be victims of the "It always was this way. It's just that it wasn't reported as much" garbage.

Also, if people educate themselves about our country, coups wouldn't even be considered because a great majority of the citizens would know that the people, who would be removed by a coup, were intellectual frauds and scum, and therefore, would never be elected in the first place.

Just my cheap two cents worth.

Coup - American Style
The difference between the kind of revolution that Dr. Sowell is referencing is that once done, the result will be simply re-instating the Constitution as the law of the land. It would not be a complete overthrow of the founding ideals. The military, in fact, would be completely justified in assiting in such a coup, sine they are, first and foremost, to defend the constitution.

military coup -not!
Speaking as a retired USN officer, on the off chance that there are those who do not realize that mention of a military coup here is simple hyperbole, may I opine that such an outcome is neither desireable nor likely in this country.

Two reasons. First, most military officers are patriots and lovers of freedom first and foremost, and pragmatists second. They understand and relish their role and want what is best for the country, which is not trashing everything others have fought for all these centuries, i.e. a working constitutional republic.

Second, while it may seem that military officers are great leaders (and many truly are), the like of which we need at the political helm of this country, I can testify that plenty of them are instead butt-kissing sycophants who are more political in pursuit of career ascendancy than any Washington politician. Be careful what you wish for.

zzzzzzzzzzzz

Sad but true...
Wow, hardly a dissenter among the commenters here! Where are all those wacky little moonbats who make me feel so smart? Is it that T. Sowell is too intellectually superior for them to understand? Is "Stuart Smalley", who ain't even funny, their idea of an intellectual?

Anyway, as others have said, it would be nice to have someone like Sowell for president -- someone who understands so clearly and simply what is going on in this world. I mean, how can you argue against such obvious common sense? And why is Sowell one of the few to express such? And guess what, he doesn't need to resort to the "race card" like Al or Je$$e, who flaunt racial distinctions as superior to just plain being a fellow human.

Yeah, people like Thomas Sowell have too much integrity for political office, perhaps. And dang it, I'm still angry at how people have totally besmirched another wise and valuable conservative -- Clarence Thomas. I find it twisted and ironic that someone like Spike Lee would be a hero to the black community instead of REAL men of success and intelligence like Judge Thomas.

P.S. Maybe it IS time to just let California go off and become it's own wacky country.

TheOld Geezer
How about submission to Allah? Would that work as well?

If the medicine we need is......
a military coup then the patient is already dead!

WE NEED A COUP! But the coup is at the voting booth. Instead of 5-10% of the voters deciding, at primary time, who will run it should be rather easy to run a person of principle and flush the rascals that currently occupy political office down the shoot.

Until American citizens stop thinking only of their own self interests and focus on what is needed to return our country to the Constitution that formed us we, as a country, will continue to fall apart. If we cannot work together to make our country return to the Constitution we will work together to destroy our country. It is our choice. What is your choice?

What's new?
Truth is fiction, TV is reality.

Dennis:
It would be great to have a person of Dr. Sowell's caliber in the White House.

Unfortunately for us, Dr. Sowell is getting up in the years, although he would make a great policy advisor. I just wouldn't expect him to work the long hours that the prez does.

Er,
I should have said:

Secession followed by a "war between the states". Red versus Blue. Americans versus "residents of Earth". We'll see which gun control spouting liberals actually practice what they preach.

If it happens, I'm moving to Idaho. I don't want to be stuck here in western Oregon on the losing end. Of course, my county will be a "friendly stopover" for the American advance. A rest stop may be in order before the advance on the People's Republics of Eugene and Portland.

Military coup?
No. Civil war? Yes.

A Military Coup?
I find it immensely discouraging that Dr. Sowell, who certainly is one of my all-time favorites, would think that a military coup would “save” this country. Note that the key word here is “save”. I humbly submit that a military coup never saved any country, if one looks at it from the perspective of freedom and liberty. There is no doubt that many coups have occurred which prevented total annihilation of the citizenry, but freedom and liberty were always among the body count. And they were not resurrected. Is that not the fear of freedom loving, liberty desiring, conservatives, and perhaps the goal of some others?

Our nation has and will get the government that it deserves. The fundamental problem of the nation is not the political persuasions of the masses, but whether or not they are righteous. As the masses of our nation are unrighteous in the main, we have arrived where we are now. Our politicians are drawn from among the masses. Few and far between are the truly righteous in the masses and the political ranks. Surely this is obvious. Call it the fruit of liberalism if you will.

The Founding Fathers, for whom I have the utmost respect, were, as I read it, terrified of the idea of a standing army. I think it was Jefferson who said that standing armies were the favorite tools of would-be dictators. What better way to take over? Huge mob rabbles are never a match for well-trained, well-armed troops. The Founders preferred that idea of state militias; armies were to be raised only in times of national defense from foreign invaders. We have entirely forgotten their lesson. And now we conservatives are going to look to the military for salvation from liberal mob rule?

I know a couple of military people. Fine upstanding persons who certainly would give their lives in defense of freedom and liberty. Some here think that our military is too noble, too righteous, to participate in a coup, or perhaps they think that our military, once it “saved” the country, would restore the republic to its former position. That seems to me to be an overestimation of the human natures of our military leaders. The problem with the military is the same problem our society has, namely, it is composed of people – frail, fallible people, like me. Military leaders can succumb to temptation just like the rest of us. Remember Lord Acton.

I have to admit that for a long time now, I have been thinking, in my own pathetically limited way, that America is going to hell. I have been telling my children this since they were old enough to understand, and they are now having their own children. I have been telling them to be ready for either a revolution along the lines of the French one, or perhaps a foreign takeover. Maybe we’ll lose the next great war with Communist China. In any event, it will be because America first decayed from within. It will happen, not perhaps within my lifetime, but almost certainly within their lifetimes, or those of my grandchildren. I could be wrong. Ancient Rome lurched along for a couple of hundred years after the glory days were past. But I doubt it.

Whose fault is it? We conservatives have done too little, since the days of the Founders. We did not resist strenuously enough the obvious machinations of evil men. Good (or so it seemed) men did nothing.

Enough of my pontificating. What’s the solution? The only real solution involves a miraculous return by the masses (and the intelligentsia, media, politics, etc.) to the spiritual, moral and intellectual foundations of the Founders. Do you believe in miracles? I do. I believe that God became a man, walked on this earth, walked on water, talked with His Heavenly Father and then talked with fellow humans, healed the sick raised the dead, died on a cross, rose again for the justification of those who are His, ascended to His Father and will some day come again, with vengeance. Miracles happen. The question is not, do they happen, but will this one happen? I doubt it. I don’t look to this planet for salvation. It can only come from above.

BULLSEYE!
Mr Sowell,
Sir, right on target as usual!
Good Day!

Ahhhh so muich meat
so early in the day! A truly great column. I would add the environmentalist to the intellectual. they are sure that they and they alone are going to turn the world into the garden of Eden and make the lion lie down with the lamb.
They see no conflict with common sense in wanting more grizzlies because there isn't enough food for them.

Military Coup
I have a friend that has been saying the very same thing for quite some time and I've never really believed it would get to that but I can admit it certainly is possible given the state or level to which this Nation has been infected by the ideology of the left. Personally, I think that once the baby boomer generation dies off that the Nation can begin to heal and make corrections back to a more Conservative posture, the more traditional values that the Nation was founded upon. The same friend as mentioned previously is a former University Professor and rare Conservative in those circles but he has told me that there is a small but growing movement even within Academia (mostly amongst the students) that is rejecting the ideology of the left and embracing more conservative ideology. He says the key has been to really teaching critical thinking and then presenting both sides of the issue.....he's had success in watching young people grasp the fallacy of leftist ideology and turn away from it. My hope is that the trend continues bit by bit so that when the "worst generation" (who, by the way, is the off-spring of the "greatest generation".......go figure) dies off so too will the general acceptance of leftist ideology in our Nation.

Random Thoughts?
I wish my random thoughts were anywhere near as good as Dr. Sowell's. But if you have read his books you know that he thinks on a different level than we do. I will use the unlicensed pharmacist though!

Nam65-66
I have never served a day in the military (Scored in the 90's on my ASVAB, and Navy Nuke Test, but failed the vision test-- go figure.)

I actually had to pause for a second of Dr. Sowell's words re: Military Coup. If it ever came to that, what was the point of all the past blood spilt to make this truly the only nation on Earth that has ever really gotten it right? I have more thoughts on this, but I am failing to properly express them, so I will have to stop here.

A Military Coup - WOW
"When I see the worsening degeneracy in our politicians, our media, our educators, and our intelligentsia, I can't help wondering if the day may yet come when the only thing that can save this country is a military coup."

Things are really getting desperate when even someone as notable as Dr. Sowell makes such a statement.

On my blog on Townhall (Christian Civil Government), I recently made a post about how our political system is collapsing. Why? Because there has not be one legitimate new idea put forth in the past 20 years on virtually anything. Republicans controlled both chambers of Congress, and the national debt goes up by $2.8 trillion. If that doesn't tip anyone off to the fact that there really isn't a dime's worth of difference between the parties regarding spending and that there are serious problems with this country, then I don't know what will.

Morally, our country has already collapsed. It is now just a matter of time before the other pillars of our country cave in.

How very sad . . . .

As Usual Dr. Sowell -- Brilliant!
A military coup may not be so far fetched...

We're already in a Cold Civil War at home, inching toward all out anarchy by the those on the left and a growing number in Congress.

So why not a military coup?

Hopefully the spineless Repubs will wake up and prepare themselves to fight back. They've been apathetic for too long.

I can only speak for myself as a true conservative, but I know many more that feel the same way as I do.

The Democrats were today's conservatives in the early 60's and have taken a huge fall to the left since then.

Could the Republicans be following in their footsteps?

Fred Thompson is our ONLY hope, unless Dr. Sowell decides to run... A Thompson - Sowell ticket really has a nice ring to it.

President
Why is it people like don't run for president?
Is it you are to intelligent?

Abject Conceit
When you add together, “Liberals hold us individually responsible for nothing but collectively responsible for everything”, “…intellectuals who have trouble remembering that they are not God” and “…rational discussion has become impossible -- and where you are considered a bad person even for wanting to discuss it rationally”, it foments “degeneracy” that leads to dissolution, the kind of threat our military is sworn to defend us from realizing.

If you want a hint of what it would be like under this generation’s brand of a liberal democrat in the White House, look at California. Gaze no farther than mayors Gavin Newsom of San Francisco or Antonio Villaraigosa of Los Angeles, both are demagogues who thwart existing laws to advance agendas they want to popularize. If that type of arrogance were seated in the oval office, goodbye Constitution.

Dr. Sowell has said before, “[The] political left's agenda -- is really all about, self congratulation”, and it’s still inaccurately short of breath. Their agenda is born of abject conceit. Self congratulation is what they do before the cameras, as their marring same sex couples. Conceit comes from likening themselves to God, the first and biggest lie.

Secondly, baseball’s hitting records are a joke. Babe Ruth went his entire carrier facing very few relief pitchers. Rosters back then didn’t have more pitchers than fielders. They didn’t have middle relievers and closers. If your pitcher was throwing up puff balls in the eighth and ninth innings, to bad, you threw to Babe Ruth with that linguini arm on the mound at the time.

It is sad that an....
..."Intellectual Giant" like Dr. Sowell is coming to the conclusion that the democrats (i.e. liberals) in this country have become irretrievable from their journey toward power at any cost and that a military coup MAY be the only option in the (obviously, but not stated, not too distant) future.
TBC :>(

Great thoughts Dr. Sowell,
My favorite is "The people who are scariest to me are the people who don't even know enough to realize how little they know." Human arrogance at its own intelligence is the greatest folly of all time. Scientific study of most things is a good thing, but to believe that we have finally found an answer to any problem is lunacy. Everything that we think we "know" is built upon that which we once "knew" and is now known to be wrong. The worst are nutritional "scientists" because there is no way that a true scientific experiment can be performed as there are way too many variables and there is no way to have a "control" group that has any validity. Butter is bad, margarine is good. Oops, margarine is bad and butter is good. Eggs are good, no eggs are bad, no eggs are good, no, no, no, and so on!

Perfect description of a progressive liberal - however I don't know of any that I consider "intellectual".

We need another Sam Adams, just drinking the beer isn't enough.

Having spent 20 years...

Please do not mention military coup and America in the same breath.

Thank you.

No coup here
The difficulty being that the only outcome of a coup in America would be a massive Smash,Grab, Loot and Destroy Festival where everybody owuld be out to get him a new Plasma TV and some drugs.

There are times when I can understand how God felt just before he put in that call to Noah.

On the money....
Perfect, Mr. Sowell
I said the same thing yesterday...a UNC prof... "we don't condone migrants who enter the Country by NON-LEGAL means..." but you have to treat them equal...Wah!

random thoughts, military coups etc
it wouldnt be a coup, it would be a recoup...
look at our armed services and how weak they are, they can destroy but are not allowed to win which is what they are for. so now we end up with a military that cant win because the political class (including the presstitutes and their mentors in academe) won't allow it.
ever read the first words of the declaration of independence?!!!
the enemy is smart enough to never pearl harbor us again, they can just out liberal us and get us to hand our children, property, families, values etc over to them piece by piece because the most important thing in the world is to be "liked".

Yet another beacon of truth.

I'm pleased to say that I agree with you completely! There IS common ground for hicks and sophisticates!

I had just finished posting a similar comment at the William Perry Pendley essay.

This is not new
A revolution would be welcomed, from the military, by me. It would save a lot of civilian lives.

However it would have to be an extreme circumstance and take popular support. No way do we have the quantity of troops to maintain order.

I would only go along with it because I trust our military above all others.

Goshawk and JimmyCarter
Ditto on your post Goshawk.

And, Jimmy, I kind of thought that was you emailing Dr. Sowell.

Always look forward to
your Random Thoughts Dr. Sowell! All of these seem very pertinent to the today’s reality. When you say..

"When I see the worsening degeneracy in our politicians, our media, our educators, and our intelligentsia, I can't help wondering if the day may yet come when the only thing that can save this country is a military coup."
