Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

Random thoughts on the passing scene:

They say that man cannot control the weather. But every time I buy photographic equipment, it rains.

Who says that there is no difference between the political parties? When Democrats are criticized, they counter-attack. When Republicans are criticized, they whine that they are innocent.

We all enter the world knowing nothing but, by the time we are teenagers, we know it all. Sometimes it is decades later before we know enough to realize how little we know.

Nothing is called "second-hand" any more, except "second-hand smoke." Why is it not called "pre-owned" smoke?

Civil rights used to be about treating everyone the same. But today some people are so used to special treatment that equal treatment is considered to be discrimination.

Some people seem to think that we live in more "liberated" times, when all that has happened is that one set of taboos has been replaced by another and more intolerantly enforced set of taboos.

If people had been as mealy-mouthed in centuries past as they are today, Ivan the Terrible would have been called Ivan the Inappropriate.

Sometimes you need a vacation just to recover from all the preparations you made before going on vacation.

Why would a boxer agree to a match in another boxer's home town?

Whatever the political benefits of making decisions by committees, the need for consensus virtually guarantees the lowest common denominator. A bipartisan committee with people of widely differing views has to paper over these differences and issue mushy pieties, like those of the Baker-Hamilton report on Iraq.

I don't feel any different as I get older. However, I do notice that, when I am out biking, a lot of other bikers seem to be passing me and I don't seem to be passing anybody.

What is especially disturbing about the political left is that they seem to have no sense of the tragedy of the human condition. Instead, they tend to see the problems of the world as due to other people not being as wise or as noble as themselves.

The next time somebody says that the government is forced to intervene in the economy to protect the poor, ask why the government is forcing taxpayers to subsidize municipal golf courses, the ballet, opera and -- the biggest subsidy of all -- surrounding affluent communities with vast amounts of expensive "open space."

Some days I don't seem to have much energy. Perhaps worse yet, I don't particularly want much energy.

One of the scariest aspects of our times is how easy it is for glib loudmouths to turn us against each other, weakening the whole framework of society, on which we all depend.

Despite the shameless propaganda of the environmentalist zealots about the loss of animal habitat, more than 90 percent of the land in the United States is undeveloped. Animals already have vastly more habitat than human beings have. How much is enough?

As much as I have enjoyed traveling, the older I get the sooner I become homesick.

The Detroit "big three" top automobile manufacturers in America have already become the "big two," as Toyota replaced DaimlerChrysler as the third largest seller of cars in the United States. An internal memo from the Ford Motor Company indicates that they expect Toyota to replace them in the number two spot.

It is hard to think of any word that has confused more issues than the word "rights." Nowadays, almost anything that anybody wants is called a "right" -- a magic word that does away with the need for evidence, logic or even common sense.

Many of the same people who are urging us to get out of Iraq are also urging us to go into Darfur. They say we should "do something" about the murderous horrors in Darfur. But you cannot simply "do something." You have to do something specific. Those who are urging intervention won't take the responsibility for specifying what we are to do -- and at what cost in American lives.

Compact disks are especially valuable to people who listen to classical music. Through CDs, they can now enjoy the music without having to watch the antics and rituals of classical concerts.

We can only hope that the rumor that Israel is going to take out Iran's nuclear weapons facilities is true. If they do, Israel will be widely condemned by governments that are breathing a sigh of relief that they did.

Thanks for these Dr. Sowell
Always look forward to your random thoughts.

These two are my favorites of the group..

"If people had been as mealy-mouthed in centuries past as they are today, Ivan the Terrible would have been called Ivan the Inappropriate."

"What is especially disturbing about the political left is that they seem to have no sense of the tragedy of the human condition. Instead, they tend to see the problems of the world as due to other people not being as wise or as noble as themselves."

BIGbelly
Your Random Thoughts aren't to shabby either! Ha ha ha..

Random thoughts are great!
Why is illegal immigration not illegal?

Why don't we ever see a headline reading
"Iranian Nuke Program Bogged Down by 'I.C.L.U.'"

A little pick me up...
The "Cut and Run Conservatives" might help destroy this country as we know it, but I sure do feel smart standing next to one.

"liberated times"
Mr. Sowell has a good memory. The younger set today cannot compare the governmental controls they live with to a time when such things were non-existent. One obvious difference: the multitude of laws which pertain to driving a car. I need not enumerate those which at an earlier time were not even imagined.

For those who believe that a 50% divorce rate, abortion on demand, demands of homosexual partners to have the same rights as married folks (including adopting and/or parenting children), to name just a few...if this is an indication to them that we are now MORE liberated than Americans in the years prior to the 60's, I strongly disagree.

These so-called "freedoms" are contributing to the destruction of American society and the price will be paid.

Hurry ! Give up before it's too late !
Why is it assumed by so many(including the repubs who run from it) that "Stay the course" is a bad thing? I thought it meant, commiting to the mission even though the going gets tough. It wasn't bad when we stayed the course during WWII. Oh yeah, we ALL wanted to win that war.

bushbaby
"Why is illegal immigration not illegal?"

Ask Bush, baby. (Sorry. I couldn't resist...all in good humor.)

BTW, I voted for GWB twice. I've finally had to admit I think he is a proponent of a world government. What else is there to think?

Ha Ha Harmony!

Same here. I think most politicians are. There is way too much catering to the UN. They must also cater to the hispanic vote. (of which there wouldn't be as much if our laws were inforced)

And another random thought -

Why would we withdraw our troops and then "redeploy" them?

Counter-Attack
Dr. Sowell,
Your 3rd paragraph is a question I have often asked myself. When did the Repubs become such a bunch of whiny a**es. I want my Ronald Reagan back. Is there 1 of the potential 2008 presidential canidates I could count on to effectively rebut the claptrap from the left-side of the political aisle? Someone please tell me.

Random Thoughts
Mr. Sowell always one of my favorit commentaries today. His salt and pepper articles are thoughtful and stimulating to the mind. He seams to be always tolerant to the intolerant. Sure like this forum and view expressed, learn a lot about the wide spectrum of conservativism. Fergie.

Random Thoughts
One of my favorite writers and economists. Your observations are targeted and true. I look forward to reading more of your columns and books.

Random Thoughts
Dr. Sowell's random thoughts are like a lighthouse that guides and validates right thinking.

Dr. Sowell's wisdom
sometimes leaves my mouth agape. What a threat he poses to the PC/SP dhimmicrats -a realy, really smart black man who exposes their schemes and scams and who so deftly disassembles their arguments, they're reduced to mumbling, mental midgets.

My pet peeve about “rights”

We often hear phrases like, “Should the government have the right to . . . ”

Since when does government have rights? Government has AUTHORITY; only individual have rights.

1st and 2nd
Liberals, for the most part control the speech in the MSM and in higher education so the 1st Amendment is only a road block when used by opponents, this is why diversity of thought is so violently opposed in our Colleges and the fairness doctrine is coming to regain control over the media they have lost i.e. talk radio and 1 cable news network.

As for the 2nd Amendment, it is the great equalizer a potential road block to the power hungry, too much power in one mans hand a wildcard that must go. The masses must be controllable passive sheep.

"God created man, Sam Colt made them equal."

A Random Thought
When I called up the cable people to confess that I can't make heads nor tails of their digital box and its contents and needed someone to come out and set it up, why did the chirpy girl on the other end of the line ask "Don't you have anyone there who can help you?" Isn't that, like, SELF-EVIDENT? My reply was "It's just me and the cat, and neither of us has Clue One."

Another random thought: When will all this crapola stop being so complicated OR when will the hiring of 10 year old boys by cable and internet companies be made legal as they are the only ones who can understand how to hook any of it up?

My Random Thought
If liberals argue the minimum wage should be raised to raise people out of poverty, why don't they go to Mexico and other countries to do so? Wouldn't that do a greater good? I mean, even people in poverty in the US have color TVs, electricity, water, sewage, wash machine/dryer, refrigerator, a PC, internet.....

Randon thoughts
Why is it the self check-out lines are getting less use than the ones with a real live person at the register?
Who is that employee that you see running all around trying to fix the hassles at the self check-out lines?
Did you ever notice, when everyone is speeding on the freeway that a cop will blow by to set up a speed trap.
If you really want it to rain, don't spend your money buying photographic equipment. Plan a fishing trip.
The true difference between the parties: Dems want everyone to make the same money and then tax it all back. The Pubs don't want to tax you, they just want you to work for susbistance pay.
In the midwest you can find the term "second hand" in every town. Some towns have more "second hand" stores than stores with new merchandise because the Pubs have them working for so little they can't afford to buy the new stuff. You think I jest? Ha!
Actually I am not surprised the government doesn't do more for the poor. What with "the government forcing taxpayers to subsidize municipal golf courses, the ballet, opera and -- the biggest subsidy of all -- surrounding affluent communities with vast amounts of expensive "open space"" where would they get more money for the poor. It's all so logical.
In order to reverse this mealy mouthed time in our history, I propose that every employer have a button with a light and buzzer which, upon hitting it one suspends, for eight seconds, the workplace violence rules. That threat might bring back some civility into our social discourse.
The 90% of the land Sowell says is not developed is indeed developed. It is called farm country. Animals don't do well on monoculture farm lands. They need diversity. Farms have developed the land from the native state, you know.
The price of oil just went to the lowest since summer 2005. Did you notice it at the pump?
Russia and Belarus are having a dispute over oil. Mind you, none is missing or blown up. Yet the world price of oil went up due a very local dispute about marketing issues. Make sense?

Actually its more like the big 0
Minor correction:

In terms of the US market it is correct that Toyota is likely to become #2 but in terms of global sales Toyota has already outsold Ford and in fact is predicted to outsell GM in 2007 - http://money.cnn.com/2006/12/22/news/companies/toyota_gm.reut/index.htm

Soonerjj
The globalists had a plan to raise the minimum wage in Mexico and it was a flop. Do you recall a thing called NAFTA? All it did was transfer wealth from middle class Americans to their bosses. The Mexicans went from subsitance living on the land into border shanty towns, living in sewage. Even now, those wonderful NAFTA jobs are going to China to raise their minimum wage.

Dr Sowell
The next time you and Dr Williams are filling in for Rush, consider inviting BIGbelly to be part of the show. I'm sure it would be quite educational as well as humorous.

Never mind
buying photographic equipment, or planning a fishing trip. The surest guarantee of rain is simply washing your car!:)

Tired of the Outsource whine
Yes... some jobs go overseas some jobs come from overseas some new jobs are created some old jobs are destroyed. Its part of having a dynamic economy.

Agreed. In fact, I was just considering this assumption this morning. I haven't heard one solid idea from George Clooney. On the other hand, Ethiopia seems to know how to handle the problem.

Republican whining?
"Who says that there is no difference between the political parties? When Democrats are criticized, they counter-attack. When Republicans are criticized, they whine that they are innocent."

My observation is that when Democrates get caught they profess 'I'm only human'. The bare minimal for even being able to speak. ( we should try to rise above the lowest common denominator).

Republicans whine, apologize and go to jail or leave office. How many Dems are still in place after scandals and criminal offenses. Alcess Hastings, Johnson of the $90,0000., Barney Frank of the gay prostitute ring, Ted Kennedy glub, glub etc.

rusino
Good point.

However, it's William "Freezer Money" Jefferson.

Like the other criminal William Jefferson Clinton, minus the Clinton.

The Johnson I think you are referring to was Lyndon Bates Johnson who got 50,000+ GI's killed in Vietnam so that he could make millions in Colt and Sealand stock.

Good points and strawmen
Dear Mr. Sowell,

As usual, you make many good points, but then you make the same old tired claims that somehow there is a difference between the Left and the Right in terms of their struggle with hypocrisy, thereby revealing only your own hypocrisy.

The mirror is a treacherous place. While we love our own reflection, the mirror will not tell us the lies about ourselves that we wish to hear. It knows us better than we know ourselves.

Just as the Left hides from their mirror, you and the Right hide from your own.

Isn't it odd that even after thousands of years men are unwilling to even hold their sins as equal?

Peace,

"rights"
RE: It is hard to think of any word that has confused more issues than the word "rights." Nowadays, almost anything that anybody wants is called a "right" -- a magic word that does away with the need for evidence, logic or even common sense.

In my "Open Letter to Mass. Gov. Patrick" I asked:

I have noted that you took the oath of office on a Bible given to John Quincy Adams by Africans from the Amistad slave trade case. Excellent choice for Adams argued on behalf of the Africans in front of the U.S. Supreme Court and secured their freedom in 1841. However, I am perplexed at your intervention Tuesday hoping to convince the legislature to once again usurp their duty by refusing to vote on the initiative petition signed by over 170,000 VOTERS. Especially being an extremely important social issue, concerning the very core and foundation of civilization, the definition of marriage. Slavery and marriage are two totally different issues. Allowing same-sex unions and marriage would violate "the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God," where the abolition of slavery DID NOT, and therefore, to have these “rights” of freedom “entitled” was justified.

...So, please provide a specific response to my concern, for the record: Secular liberal progressives have implied that that which is written in the opening paragraph of the Declaration of Independence no longer applies to today's society, indicating that "the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God," which provides the boundary for how "Rights" are to be "entitled" is now outdated. So what is the "new and improved" basis in determining how "Rights" are "entitled?" What new wisdom is being employed? Have secular liberals overruled the founder's Biblical worldview of “moral virtue” and replaced it with a liberal secular progressive worldview whereby the "Laws of Nature" no longer applies? Has the word “nature” also been redefined to a new an improved “politically correct” secular liberal definition which excludes “moral virtue,” responsibility and commitment?

The entire letter is available here: http://www.earstohear.net/Op-Eds/20070106.html

Passing somebody?
"I don't feel any different as I get older. However, I do notice that, when I am out biking, a lot of other bikers seem to be passing me and I don't seem to be passing anybody."

No problem, Thomas, as long as we're at least passing the pedestrians.

Off the wall thought
When the toothpaste tube is full, we get a nice big glob. When it's at the end, whatever we can get out seems to do...

Thompson & Thompson for President?
A ticket with Tommy Thompson, former Wisconsin Gov, and Fred Thompson former Senator (who was also Watergate council, & TV Law & Order DA, would make a formidable team. Something to think about. Respectfully submitted, JP.

JP
Fred Thompson is an outstanding person.

The side benefit is that he gives liberals FITS!

I'd vote for him.

PEEPOL! THey only want a piece of it!!!
More than 9,000 sex offenders have been arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials through a series of stings called Operation Predator in three years of operation, a 2006 Department of Homeland Security Report says. But some experts are wondering if the efforts are enough to protect innocent American children from being preyed on by returning criminal alien sex offenders.

Foreign nationals account for roughly 85 percent of child sex offenders arrested by the operation, which was launched by Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge in July 2003, officials say. And as WND previously has reported, authorities also have linked illegal aliens to a wave of gang-rapes across the U.S.

good point Ralph
It's true what you said about Dr. Sowell validating the thoughts that we have, but may not have the eloquence to put on paper (or screen) ourselves. Some of the more resonant thoughts, though, make me ill to the stomach - not because I disagree, but because I know how true they are. If only our elected representatives and executive in charge had the means (aka: balls) to put such wisdom into policy.

Gunny G
I'm sure that Fred Thompson would agree with me insofar as you being the perfect candidate for rep to the UN. And still I dream of the day. . .

my own random thought...
It is said that brevity is the soul of wit.

With this in mind, the more I consider our nation's tax codes, the less comfortable I am with the people who write them having that kind of power.

Random Thoughts
Why are taxes measured by percentages of income instead of income measured by time? Why can't taxes be calculated by income per day.
Everyone could pay equal number of days income. Equal time for everyone.
Example:
A makes an average of $100 a day
B makes an average of $1000 a day
C makes an average of $1,000,000 a day
All could pay equal days of pay at their own rate of income rather than a percentage.
Would that be fair and simple?

para-dimz
What does any govt have to do with wanting people to work for "susbistence pay"? Are you referring to the minimum wage? You might note that it's not the government's pocket that that comes out of, and as a small business person how do I pay someone more than they produce without cheating my customers?

Great job Mr. Sowell
Thinker;
Consider illegals use up about 30% of our jail & prison cells at a cost of about $33,000 ea per year.

We have no duty to house foreign prisoners in American prisons.
If we put housing those foreign prisoners up for foreign bid I am sure some 3rd world country would give us a better price. Foreign criminals might be less eager to come here to victimize Americans if it was possible to end up in a Hatian cane field for doing it.

Timely Insight

Mr. Sowell writes: "What is especially disturbing about the political left is that they seem to have no sense of the tragedy of the human condition. Instead, they tend to see the problems of the world as due to other people not being as wise or as noble as themselves."

I have just returned from a public lecture series. This evening's featured speaker: Bill Moyers.

What an example of rank arrogance and self-congratulatory condescension! Mr. Sowell, I only wish there were some way that I could have flashed your cut-and-pasted comment up on the screen behind Mr. Moyers.

Hey, Doctor Sowell ..........

There are two kinds of people in this world,

And you are one of them.

Random Thoughts
Dr. Sowell, I have always enjoyed your writings, especially your "Random Thoughts". The problem I have sometimes with your random thoughts is that they are at times "common sense", yet when I was kid growing up in Brooklyn I learned that sometimes you need "uncommon sense"...after all, common sense tells you the earth is flat and we know that it is not.

It reminds me of the time I was a teenager and I was at gun point...common sense told me to stay still and listen to what the gunman wanted. My uncommon sense told me to run and dodge between the cars...it probably saved my life...thank God I did not have common sense!

Ramdom thoughts.
"I don't feel any different as I get older. However, I do notice that, when I am out biking, a lot of other bikers seem to be passing me and I don't seem to be passing anybody."

Too many young people are only concerned with getting to where they are going, not with the process of getting there. So they ride as fast as they can, and don't see the path as being just as enjoyable as the destination.

I took many vacation with my family when I was younger and drove by the Great Salt Lake many times, and both my mom and grandmother told me how wonderful it was, but we never stopped once, we were always in a hurry to get somewhere.

Next time I travel by it, I will stop there along with thousands of other places that we drove by on our way to something else.

Why is it racist?
Why is it rascist to expect all people to obey the law, specifically immigration laws.

"What is especially disturbing about the political left is that they seem to have no sense of the tragedy of the human condition. Instead, they tend to see the problems of the world as due to other people not being as wise or as noble as themselves."

I'd like to add my own version to this:

" The Democratic party has become the party of the self-proclaimed Above-Average, who sells the Average and the Below-Average on the idea that as long as they let the Above-Average call the shots, it is ok to remain as they are."

MajorHal asks:
"...Is there 1 of the potential 2008 presidential canidates I could count on to effectively rebut the claptrap from the left-side of the political aisle? Someone please tell me."

I don't know about the potential 2008 candidates... but I do know two that would fit the bill:

1. Fred Thompson
2. Me

But neither of us are running! :-)

we are losing the argument.

instead of progressive, left, greenpeace, peta, epa, osha, etc.we need to use the words of SOCIALISM AND TYRANNY.

unless we change the language we will lose the argument. it doesn't matter if it's a democrat or repubican.

example: bush may right on terrorism, but he is a socialist.

para_dimz needs an economics lesson.
"The price of oil just went to the lowest since summer 2005. Did you notice it at the pump?" by para_dimz is a demonstration of a complete lack of understanding of simple economic principles. What does the cost of oil have to do with the price of gasoline? The answer is nothing. The cost of oil is determined by the equipment and labor required to find, extract, and bring to market that oil. The price of gasoline is and should be determined by the relationship of the supply and demand for gasoline. If the government were to begin regulating oil and limiting the price that oil companies could charge, the artificially low price would result in excessive consumption and a shortage of gasoline. Another bad side effect of artificially keeping gas prices low would be a lack of research into alternative energy sources since there would be no economic incentive to develop these. We only need to look at telecommunications, the airline industry, farm subsidies, and rent control to see that price controls and industry regulation ultimately result in lower available quantities for all. I am often amazed at the people who call for government intervention when companies begin to reap the benefits (profits) of their business. Would they be just as willing to subsidize these companies in their bad years? Unfortunately, para_dimz is more the example of America's understanding of economics than he is the exception. One of the biggest problems with America today is that most people don't understand basic, very basic, ecomomic principles and vote to enact legislation that is counter to these principles. Like the laws of physics, the laws of economics do not respond to legislation - you cannot repeal the law of gravity nor Adam Smith's invisible hand. The sad part is we all suffer while those same people try to figure out what went wrong.
