Is President Obama's Afghanistan plan a step in the right direction?

Democrats are outraged over President Bush's new series of national security speeches. There he goes again, politicizing the war.

The Democratic leadership obviously believes the president should muzzle himself so close to the November elections because what is important for national security might also help Republicans, and that must be avoided at all costs.

Democrats are furious over Defense Secretary Rumsfeld's speech to the American Legion this week, in which he compared today's appeasers to those of the World War II era and warned that we mustn't turn a blind eye to today's terrorists like many did to yesterday's Nazis.

Such talk is off limits because it offends the appeasers, who, by the way, deny they're appeasers, insisting they're "tough and smart" scavengers on the hunt for the only terrorist on the planet, Osama bin Laden. His capture or death, they imply, will shut down terrorism in its tracks like a redheaded stepchild and put an end to this reckless, recreational neoconservative global gallivanting.

So, let's cease further discussion of the most important issue of the day. Let's put our history books back on the shelves and consign ourselves to repeat the painful and costly mistake of ignoring the relentless march of evil in the world.

In fact, Democrats are the ones politicizing the war and who view it exclusively through a partisan prism. When they stop hyperventilating, they might consider that it is the commander in chief's duty to rally popular support for the troops and their mission. Of course, the president's task wouldn't be nearly so urgent if Democrats hadn't been undermining the war effort in Iraq almost since it began with a steady stream of disinformation, focusing on the false charge that he lied us into war.

They explain their sudden affinity for the truth -- in contrast to their cynically dismissive attitude toward it during the Clinton years -- as a matter of the singular importance of the war. While lying per se isn't particularly wrong under their relativist standards -- and lying about adulterous relations is even virtuous to protect one's family -- lying about war, at least by a Republican president, is so evil it pretty much drives them to the obnoxious Christian state of moral absolutism.

This distinction is interesting given their own pattern of deceit concerning all aspects of the war. Let's review, shall we?

-- They said Bush attacked Iraq "unilaterally," when he built a coalition of over 30 nations, including Great Britain and tried hard to persuade the rest of Old Europe to join. To their discredit, they refused. A unilateralist wouldn't have bothered.

-- They deny Iraq is part of the war on terror, never mind that terrorists demonstrably disagree. Never mind that the Bush Doctrine clearly defines the enemy to include terrorist-sponsoring nations, like Saddam's Iraq.

-- They claim Bush asserted a connection between Saddam and 9/11, when he explicitly said otherwise. He said Saddam had close ties to terrorists, including Al Qaeda and the Taliban, which is undeniably true and which Democrats also persist in falsely denying. Indeed, Iraq was on Clinton's watch list of terrorist nations.

-- They say Bush called Iraq an "imminent threat," when he called it a "great and gathering threat." The Bush Doctrine called for attacking threatening nations before they could become an imminent threat, when it would be too late. But some anti-war Democrats, like Jay Rockefeller, did call Iraq an "imminent threat."

-- They say Bush's sole reason to attack Iraq was its WMD. In fact, David Horowitz notes there were 23 "whereas" clauses in the Iraq War resolution, only two of which mentioned WMD and 12 of which concerned Saddam's violations of U.N. resolutions.

-- They say they were duped into voting for the resolution by administration hype on WMD. But the intelligence Congress received in the National Intelligence Estimate was much less alarmist and more nuanced than the intelligence the president received in the Presidential Daily Briefings. But, hey, they had to give their anti-war base some excuse.

-- They say we had Osama surrounded in Tora Bora and let him go, outsourcing the job of capturing him to Afghan warlords so we could pursue our quixotic junket in Iraq. General Tommy Franks put the lie to all of this malicious nonsense.

-- On the hyped Wilson/Plame nonscandal -- don't get me started.

-- Most unforgivably, they've lied in painting President Bush as a liar on Iraqi WMD.

-- There's much more -- like their simultaneous condemnation and advocacy of preemptive strikes -- but no space left.

Next time you hear Democrats say they abhor lies "about war," remember a few of these gems.

Dude
Lay off the crack. You were all over the place. I didn't understand a freaking thing you were trying to say. And I'm an uneducated man.

Or maybe it's because it was one big freaking paragraph.

Good luck in rehab and maybe read what you write before you send it in. Or for the love of God, hire a proofreader.

Dude:

How did you manage to stumble your way onto this site? I won't even bother to respond to your "freaking" concerns, lest you become even dizzier.

Perhaps you'd best find your way back to MySpace, where no doubt you'll comprehend the snippets as they are so eloquently posted. Small words, short sentences, bad spelling, no punctuation: you should be right at home.

Thanks for visiting.

'Nuff said.

I had to read his note and yours twice to notice that - how very observant of you. Thanks.

"BushCo"?

Is that the best you have?

Come on, take off the tin foil and try again. You can do better...

Good catch and sweet slam-dunk!

Thanks for the smile.

Aren't all wars...
...political at some point? Since most wars involve nation-states in conflict so there are always political dimensions to them.

That said though, the Democrats are a bunch of political animals that are motivated mainly by their pursuit of power. I don't believe for a second that had this war ever been commenced by a Dem like Clinton they would all be advocating a pull-out. They would be propping up the intel used in the war, they would be telling us all about the good things that happen in Iraq, and that iraq is more than just Baghdad and the surrounding area. But since there is no political power to be had in those positions, they will avoid them like the plague!

r0_d1
Making things up??? That is what the MSM and demon-crats like you do best. If you would like a list, Lorie Boyd has one for you today in her column. Never ever write a correction, or at best bury a 2 line correction on page C-23 after 2-3 years of front page lies!! If you losers win in November, it will be because of the lies you have spread and the gullibility of people who don't have the time to find out the truth. Personally, I think you are in for a great shock, perhaps as great as the 2002 election where you losers were supposed to win big in the mid-term. Americans are waking up to the anti-American spineless leftists that control the demon-crats.

ho hum
yet another article on how democrats are liars. how clever and original. as an independent i'm disgusted with both sides. i don't hear anything constructive. slickrock says he is an uneducated man. he is being humble; something many folks here could learn about in church on sunday. if you consider yourselves better than those less educated you might consider that lack of schooling doesn't mean you are stupid. we're all still americans, right? yall don't seem to respect anyone you don't agree with and we should all go die. whatever. i'm just numb to it all and just sucks any patriotism out of me. i'm not so sure america is going to make it anymore.

Limbaugh is wrong about Dems
Mr. Limbaugh is wrong about Democrats not being in favor of preemptive strikes, he forgets Waco. Remember?

One More Time
Let's review the Dem/Lib/Socialist case for "Bush lied:"

The WMD that inspectors were looking for were documented by previous inspections after Desert Storm. The inspecters were not there on a scavenger hunt looking for weapons; they were looking for definitive evidence that Saddam had destroyed weapons that were known to exist. In reality, Saddam secretly destroyed his entire weapons stock, but didn't tell anyone so he could remain under crippling sanctions. He blocked the inpsectors at every turn and defied UN resolutions to keep up the charade.

One, and only one, other person in the world knew of the charade--George Bush. He then put together a devious scheme that fooled all of the world's intelligence agencies, the UN and most of the Democratic leadership into thinking that the weapons existed. So devious was he that he was able to trick the Clinton administration into lying about the weapons while he was still Governor of Texas. Pretty good for a guy that even Alec Baldwin thinks is stupid.

Finally, he did the one thing that would uncover his lie--invade Iraq.

Yep, makes plenty of sense to me. Bush lied! Bush lied!

flagwaver
Aren't all wars political. Now days it appears you are right. Thought your statements were accurate. Which is what is wrong with todays wars - they are political. Ask Israel is they are happy about their recent fiasco in Lebanon. I hope they throw out those who politicized their war in defending themselves (by not allowing themselves to defend themselves). Maybe future politicians will get the idea, when at war, let the military do whatever they need to do to win. Period!!!!!!

Leroy has a point
What happened the last time a Democrat administration confronted a weapons-obsessed death cult with an alleged-pedophile prophet? The cult got incinerated -- including a large number of the allegedly-obsessed children, but some collateral damage was inevitable....

What happened the last time a Democrat administration confonted a (possibly) illegal immigrant who just wnted to build a better life here? They sent his alpha sigma sigma home -- sure, he was seeking political asylum, and his mom died getting him here, but the law is the law....

Maybe the Dems ARE the right people to deal with the Religion of Peace (TM), after all....

r0_d1
Thank you for your continued deep analysis about reality and tin foil.
Who better to explain the way the world works than you?
Perhaps Al Franken and/or Michael Moore might impart some of their thoroughly researched wisdom to complement your own. Certainly, however, they couldn't hope to surpass your unassailable conclusions.

(excuse me, I must guffaw....)

Anyway: when do you start about Chaney and the World Trade Center? I don't want to miss that show.

But you are wrong!
I have documentary evidence the President lied us into war and attacked a nation that never attacked us! Click on my name to get to my blog for absolute incontrivertable evidence of this fact.

Hello
The CIA SAID the Bush admin cherry picked the info on Iraq. Um, so did the British intelligence. And what would there motivation be to show Bush lied? Hello? Hello?

And does anyone know if Cheney uses Alcoa tin foil for his hats, or is it generic?

a homerun in a different ballpark
tanabear,
I have been reading your posts over the last several weeks and you are pretty consistent. You think you are hitting a homerun, but you are doing it in a different ballpark than the one the game was started in. Today's example:
"Here is what the UN stated once inspectors were withdrawn on March 18, 2003: "Up until they were withdrawn from Iraq on 18 March –- the day before armed action began United Nations inspectors had found no evidence of the continuation or resumption of programmes of weapons of mass destruction." Bush stated right before the war on March 17, 2003: "Intelligence gathered by this and other governments leaves no doubt that the Iraq regime continues to possess and conceal some of the most lethal weapons ever devised."

Even the most intrepid liberal can agree that not making WMD any more doesn't equal getting rid of them (and by "getting rid of", I guess that doesn't mean just hide them, eh?....)

Little bear
Did you read the post. It was not the Neo-cons who did it. Take a read and let me know what you think.

Rumsfeld a Democrat?
The author points out:

“They say Bush's sole reason to attack Iraq was its WMD. In fact, David Horowitz notes there were 23 "whereas" clauses in the Iraq War resolution, only two of which mentioned WMD and 12 of which concerned Saddam's violations of U.N. resolutions.”

Now how does this square with the following quote:

"The president has made very clear that the reason why we are in Iraq is to find weapons of mass destruction. The fact that we haven't found them in seven or eight days doesn't faze me one little bit. Very clearly, we need to find this stuff or people are going to be asking questions."

Secretary Rumsfeld
ABC "This Week with George Stephanapolous"
March 30, 2003

A big moose
Noted that Rummy said we wanted to fine WMD in Iraq. Just curious, if tomorrow, we open up a weapons dump and find 100,000 anthrax warheads, I assume you will change totally and agree that Bush was absolutely right and we were correct to go into Iraq?

If not, why?

Jeff
He didn't say they wanted to find WMD. He said the reason we are there is to find WMD. Somewhat different statements.

As to your hypothetical question, If WMD's are found on the scale that was represented by the administration before the war, you better believe I would would change my opinion.

Here is just a partial list from the administration of what we were told we could expect in the form of WMD in Iraq:

-"Baghdad has established a large-scale, redundant, and concealed BW agent production capability, which includes mobile facilities; these facilities can evade detection, are highly survivable, and can exceed the production rates Iraq had prior to the Gulf war."

-"Iraq has some lethal and incapacitating BW agents and is capable of quickly producing and weaponizing a variety of such agents for delivery by bombs, missiles, aerial sprayers and covert operatives, including potentially against the US Homeland."

-"Iraq has the capability to convert quickly legitimate vaccine and biopesticide plants to biological warfare production and already may have done so."

-"Experts from UNSCOM assessed that Baghdad's declarations vastly understated the production of biological agents and estimated that Iraq actually produced two-to-four times the amount of agent that is acknowledged producing, including Bacillus anthracis."

-"The improvement or expansion of a number of nominally 'civilian' facilities that were directly associated with biological weapons indicates that key aspects of Iraq's offensive BW program are active and most elements more advanced and larger than before the 1990-1991 Gulf War." Facilities of concern include: al-Dawrah Foot and Mouth Disease Vaccine Facility, Amiriyah Serum and Vaccine Institute, and the Fallujah III Castor Oil Production Plant Chemical Weapons

-"Baghdad has begun renewed production of chemical warfare agents, probably including mustard, sarin, cyclosarin, and VX."

-"Iraq has the ability to produce chemical warfare agents within its chemical industry, although it probably depends on external sources for some precursors."

-"Baghdad is expanding its infrastructure, under cover of civilian industries, that it could use to advance its CW agent production capability."

-"Gaps in Iraqi accounting and current production capabilities strongly suggest that Iraq maintains a stockpile of chemical agents, probably VX, sarin, cyclosarin, and mustard."

-"Iraq probably has stocked at least 100 metric tons and possibly as much as 500 metric tons of CW agents."

-"Iraq probably has concealed precursors, production equipment, documentation and other items necessary for continuing its CW effort."

-"Thousands of tons of chemical precursors and tens of thousands of unfilled munitions… remain unaccounted for."

-Overstated use of chemical bombs in Iran-Iraq war by at least 6,000.

-15,000 artillery rockets not accounted for.

-550 artillery shells filled with mustard agent not accounted for.

-"Baghdad continues to rebuild and expand dual-use infrastructure that it could divert quickly to CW production… Iraq is seeking to purchase CW agent precursors and applicable production equipment and is trying to hide the activities of the Fallujah plant." Nuclear Weapons

-"In the absence of inspections, however, most analysts assess that Iraq is reconstituting its nuclear program

-"unraveling the IAEA's hard-earned accomplishments."

-No weapon before the last half of the decade if fissile material produced indigenously.

-Weapon within a year with acquired fissile material.

r0_d1
Wow.

Well, I guess you told me.

I'm only glad it wasn't over a loudspeaker, as I'm sure that it would have been set at "screech".

I wonder how you arrive at your numbers, specifically, what constitutes a "majority", and across what spectrum?

"Pointless spew". Interesting choice of words, there. I suppose that if you hear it enough, as I'm sure you do, you get to claim ownership, and therefore toss it back, hoping that it sticks.

Not this time, unfortunately.

Hope you don't find this post "worthless dribble"--whatever that is. (Might you have meant "drivel"? No need to thank me, I help wherever I can.)

r0_d1
There are many reason why other people are tired of "BushCo", but I find no evidence that lies are among them. I would like to see proof of this "majority, across the spectrum" that you claim have had enough. The only poeple I see screaming "Bush lied, Bush lied" are whiney liberals like you. Why don't you go back to your thesaurus and see if you can come up with more words for hatemonger, that seems to be the only research you seem capable of doing.

Bullwinkle
Just curious what the context of the entire conversation was that lead up to the Rumsfeld quote you supplied. I can think of a number of questions that could have preceeded that response and not make it a "lie". Being able to shop through all the conversations of a public figure like Rumsfeld, or Bush or even Dean and Kerry for that matter and finding a particular comment that suits your argument is hardly convincing.

r0d1
Just wondering what would be this "November distraction"?

Show up with Osama on election day?

Actually seal the borders?

Broker a peace between Isreal and ____fill in arab state___?

This mentality is a prime example of anything that Bush may do that would be seen as positive to people across the spectrum (to borrow a phrase) will be viewed as trickery by those so color blind they cannot even see the spectrum.

What Flgwaver Said:
RIGHT ON ENOUGH TO BE REPEATED:

"That said though, the Democrats are a bunch of political animals that are motivated mainly by their pursuit of power. I don't believe for a second that had this war ever been commenced by a Dem like Clinton they would all be advocating a pull-out. They would be propping up the intel used in the war, they would be telling us all about the good things that happen in Iraq, and that iraq is more than just Baghdad and the surrounding area. But since there is no political power to be had in those positions, they will avoid them like the plague!"

I've been a registered Democrat for over 40 years. I grew up in Chicago under Richard Daley. There is no doubt in my mind that i the Dems could make a pact with the devil to have 100,000 or more Americans be killed in the next terrorist attack in turn for them regaining control of the White House, they would no hesitate in a second. And behind their closed doors whey would agree: "What the hell. We have about 300 million so what's a hundred thousand." Calling them traitors and power mongers is being too easy on them. They are about the sleaziest, most vicious people, making terrorists and the mafia look like mere amateurs.

Someone said they would watch the US turn into a cinder. True, but in their minds it would then be THEIR cinder. Well worth it!

Leroy
Touche,

Upon further research, the quote attribution to Rumsfeld was incorrectly listed on this website:

http://www.carnegieendowment.org/static/npp/bush_admin_quotes.cfm.

In fact a meaningless staff member of the administration John S. Wolf made that quote.

I apologize for passing on a misquote of Rumsfeld.

However, after reviewing the Stephanopoulos/Rumsfeld interview transcript in the course of researching the other quote, reminded me of the following exchange:

MR. STEPHANOPOULOS: Finally, weapons of mass destruction. Key goal of the military campaign is finding those weapons of mass destruction. None have been found yet. There was a raid on the Answar Al-Islam Camp up in the north last night. A lot of people expected to find ricin there. None was found. How big of a problem is that? And is it curious to you that given how much control U.S. and coalition forces now have in the country, they haven't found any weapons of mass destruction?

SEC. RUMSFELD: Not at all. If you think -- let me take that, both pieces -- the area in the south and the west and the north that coalition forces control is substantial. It happens not to be the area where weapons of mass destruction were dispersed. We know where they are. They're in the area around Tikrit and Baghdad and east, west, south and north somewhat.

This interview is pretty interesting in retrospect. It can be found at:

http://www.usembassy.it/file2003_03/alia/A3032803.htm

In addition.......
I just read this which goes along with the rest of what's said about the Dems. Piece by piece, they are succeeding in dismantling our country, and with the assistance of the ignorant masses.

lies
LIberals love to lie. It's a spiritual problem. there's a site called catholicfundamentalism.com (I know, I know, but it IS conservative) that has these lie committees that make up whatever the liberals are going to be believing over the next year or so. It explores why they love to lie.
