Will Congress pass Obamacare by the end of the year?

One of the more potent (and predictable) side effects of forcibly removing religion from public life, public conversation, and yes, public schools, is that society gradually loses touch with the religious dimensions of life.

We forget how to talk about faith... we misinterpret other people’s religious actions and conversation... we underestimate faith’s powerful influence in the lives of those who still take their deepest beliefs seriously.

And, of course, what we cannot understand, we usually begin to fear.

And the things which unsettle us... often begin to make us angry.

Perhaps that explains the increasingly open and unrelenting fury of the Left toward Christians, as rant after rant erupts in a variety of venues:

  • The savage soundbites on NBC’s new ‘Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip,” in which Aaron Sorkin’s characters liken Christians to the Ku Klux Klan and deride them as both wild-eyed doomsday-ers and ignorant bigots from inconsequential corners of the American landscape.

  • The recent virulent Rosie O’Donnell outburst, as she explained to the audience of ‘The View’ why Christians are even more dangerous than Muslim terrorists.

  • The increasingly aggressive efforts of university administrations to drive Christian student groups from campus, usually on the premise that Christians are “intolerant” of homosexual behavior and that religious activities are inherently divisive.

  • The escalating effort to remove crosses erected on government property to memorialize the sacrifices of fallen servicemen and police officers – lest some atheist passer-by take offense.

  • The inscrutable decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, which ruled that Christians can’t meet in a private room at a public library because they might start studying the Bible or singing hymns... and religion isn’t considered free speech, on public property.

But if it’s one thing for the Left to demand that Christians check their faith at the door, it’s another to ask us to check our minds. The defiant refusal of so many leaders in our courts, our schools, and our media to acknowledge the reality of religious faith is translating not only into aggressive attacks, but into almost laughably bad logic.

    Consider:

  • Madonna, who justifies the climactic moment of her current “Confessions” tour, in which she hangs from a gigantic cross with a “crown of thorns” on her head, by assuring us that, "if Jesus were alive today he would be doing the same thing." (Maybe she should have let Papa preach. Whatever else you want to believe about Jesus, He obviously understood the difference between sacrificing oneself to save mankind and degrading oneself to sell tickets.)

  • Sorkin’s comparison of Christians to Ku Klux Klan members. How does he reconcile the inherent “bigotry” of anyone who follows Jesus with the outspoken Christian faith that drove Martin Luther King, Jr. and other Civil Rights pioneers – white and black – of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference?

  • The endless accusations of “intolerance” lodged against Christians. Mocked, censored, and persecuted, we pray, change the channel, write letters, stage boycotts, complain on Conservative radio, file lawsuits, vote. In other words, we utilize the full resources of a democratic society... while our opponents force-feed their political agenda with aggressive censorship and fiats invoked by judges more obsessed with their own leftist liturgy than the letter of the law.

  • O’Donnell’s outburst. How long does she think an outspoken woman who publicly embraces lesbian behavior would last under the tolerance of Al Qaeda, whose idea of religious conversion is “I’ll make him an offer he can’t refuse?”

  • The American secularist media. They dutifully shake their heads over the rising number of sex crimes and teen pregnancies – while promoting increasingly pornographic images on everything from daytime television to cable news programs. They warn of increasingly violent crime rates all over the country, between commercials for ever-more sadistic “entertainment” programs.

Somehow, the people at the wheel of our careening culture are convinced that – if we can only remove every spiritual incentive for upright, moral, selfless behavior – if we can just convince everyone that God doesn’t exist – people will suddenly decide to be good.

No, not just good. Better than they’ve ever been before.

Legendary novelist Fedor Dostoevsky knew better.

“If you were to destroy in mankind the belief in immortality,” he wrote, “not only love but every living force maintaining the life of the world would at once be dried up.” For, “if God does not exist, everything is permitted.”

Everything. Liberty – political, social, sexual – runs amuck, without reason, without discipline, without limits. Justice is impossible, and unnecessary. Ignorance truly becomes bliss. Nothing has to make sense any more, because... nothing matters.

In their blind determination to eradicate God from our community, from our culture, even from our government, the American Civil Liberties Union and Americans United for Separation of Church and State and all their Leftist kindred aren’t really accomplishing the demotion of the Divine – Who is, by definition, un-demote-able.

They are bent, rather, on destroying themselves.

The only question that remains, as they head for their mad fall, is whether they take our nation, and our children, with them.

“if God does not exist, everything is permitted.”

And equally, if God does not exist, nothing is permitted.

    markmcconnell
"And equally, if God does not exist, nothing is permitted."

That's either the most meaningly or the stupidest thing I've ever read.

If you simply mean that the concept of "permission" does not exist without a divine permitter, then it's meaningless. It completely misses the point of the original statement.

    Even more intersting
The Left feels perfectly free to disparage, mock, libel, slander, slur, laugh at, ridicule, hate, disenfranchise, belittle, scoff at, alienate, sue, and marginalize religion.

    AS LONG AS:

It's based on Christianity or Judaism.

    Otherwise, HANDS OFF!!!!!!!!!!

We can't make our Islamic friends feel bad, can we?????

    Why don't we
abolish the ninth circuit already? We could create a new circuit, say the 9.1 circuit, and appoint all new judges to it.

The old ninth circuit judges would still be judges of course ... they just wouldn't have a court or any cases.

    jerubaal..
    ... 9.1 circuit...that's funny....

    Why the West is dying…

“Somehow, the people at the wheel of our careening culture are convinced that – if we can only remove every spiritual incentive for upright, moral, selfless behavior – if we can just convince everyone that God doesn’t exist – people will suddenly decide to be good.”-Alan Sears

Thanks for making this statement. This is a good description of the foolishness of autonomous man. Like Esau we are selling our birthright for a mess of pottage.

Also, thanks for the quote from Dostoevsky.

“If you were to destroy in mankind the belief in immortality, not only love but every living force maintaining the life of the world would at once be dried up.” For, “if God does not exist, everything is permitted.”

He is writing from the perspective of Orthodox Christianity. So he is saying that the living God gives man a reference to the infinite and to the eternal and to the personal in His revelation of Himself to man. The image of God created within us demands our reference be upward toward the Creator. Those who reduce man to mere animal have chosen a reference downward toward the animal. They suppress the image of God within them to their own destruction.

“The West has lost Christ and that is why it is dying; that is the only reason.” –Dostoevsky

It's all in Brave New World
As I've said before, in order for the True Masters to Rule, it's necessary to turn the rest of the world into Teenagers chanting "Was and Will will make me ill/I Take A Gramme And Only Am." That is, live for today and remember, Everybody Belongs To Everybody Else, Ending Is Better Than Mending, and above all else, Keep Your Head Empty. And what had religion morphed into in the Brave New World? Required Group Solidarity Gatherings where the Group takes drugs and has mandatory orgies. Anything about that sound familiar?

It's all right there in Brave New World. In that society nobody matured, and with plenty of sex, drugs and entertainment to distract them, Everybody's Happy Nowadays. The only person in that book who had read and studied, however little, and knew there was more to life than that, ended up hanging himself. (Contrary to the old saying, in the Kingdom of the Blind, the One-Eyed Man is such a freak that he has no other choice but to put out his eye or kill himself.)

You Sixties People are reaping what you sowed and the people who are making hay out of the situation are only giving you what you said you wanted back when you really were teenagers: unlimied Fun and Neither Context Nor Responsibility.

If your religion is If It Feels Good, Do It, that's about what you ought to expect.

But while there are some of us yet alive who know better, however quiet we're remaining, y'all aren't going to win.

Think about that and then think about what your choices are.

    But read Brave New World.

    That'll preach Brother Sears!!!
Or as they say down here, "That dog will hunt!".

The key is, will it be accepted, and utilized to advance the TRUTH it offers?

Jesus said, "... he that has an ear, let him hear..."

For the loud, lust driven, in your face, egocentered, party hearty crowd, we have in our society today that will take some miracle!

"And such were some of us..."

In the book of Judges, it says that after Joshua and the Elders died off, the children had no one to teach God's ways to them, and they went whoring after even darker means of rebellious debauchery than their forefathers knew.

Look around, and say it isn't so!

BUSH IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL…
George Bush is the first American President expressing Christian certitude. God even speaks to George, and as he relates God told him to go to war with Iraq. If true, presumably God would have also told him how to win the war without all the mistakes, suffering and death.

The world has seen Christian certitude before and it’s not a pretty picture: papal infallibility when the Pope had armies, the Inquisition (intolerance at home) and the Crusades (intolerance abroad). When the Crusaders captured Jerusalem in 1099, they slaughtered all its inhabitants. When the Arab leader Saladin recaptured the city, he spared all the Christian inhabitants. So the Middle East is already primed for another war with Christian invaders; and accordingly and as the latest NIE confirms, the war in Iraq has increased the number of jihadists and terrorists worldwide and made America less safe.

Our brave, innocent young men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan are fighting for a better world, but a leader ignorant of history and cultures can easily cause the opposite. The stupidity of World War I and of Wilson, Lloyd George and Clemenceau caused terrible consequences for another 70 years after the end of that war. Afghanistan is the right war, certainly a just war and the whole world agreed and was on our side, and if we would have concentrated our efforts there we probably would have wiped out Bin Laden and those responsible for 9-11 by now. Iraq is the wrong war even if hopefully we win it, and Iran will be another, but larger wrong war.

The leader of Iran comes off as a whacko, however, the Iranians and the rest of the world view George Bush in the same way, so there is a common starting point. Real diplomacy involves talking with your adversary one-on-one without preconditions, and Russia and China have forced Bush to make a positive step in that direction. And there’s a lot to discuss with Iran: the CIA in the 1950s, the Shah, the 1979 hostage crisis, sponsorship of terror, Israel and justice in the Middle East. But if past is prelude, then Bush’s diplomacy with Iran will be perfunctory and manipulated (as it was with Iraq), and likely God has already spoken to our President and told him to go to war after the November 2006 elections (as he did with Iraq in 2002-2003). When Bush finally increases the level of hatred against the United States to where it engulfs Pakistan, then we face nuclear terror, and Biblical Armageddon becomes real, a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Back at home, Christian certitude is present in Bush’s politics of division and hate. Nonbelievers of Bush’s Christian values and policies are viewed with contempt, instead of as fellow citizens in a pluralistic democracy. Civility has gone out of our civilization, and this type of Christian Right hate is now completely out of the closet with Ann Coulter’s latest book, which has been repudiated by few if any on the right who claim to practice the Christian message of love. The Foley-Hastert scandal further shows the actual evil of their "perfect" practice of Christian good.

“Good and evil” is a concept common in religion, morality and ethics. Obviously the whole world needs more good and less evil. But is there a practical definition that everyone can agree on and that lends itself to objective measurement. How about: GOOD is something that makes the many human lives better and no or few lives worse, while EVIL is something that makes many lives worse, and no or few lives better. Some obvious good in this world: Habitat for Humanity, St Jude’s Children Hospital, etc. Evil under this definition would include a considerable number of Hollywood movies, a lot of poison on TV and violent video games.

Measuring George Bush’s actions by this definition with objective facts, our good Christian President does mostly evil: from Iraq to Katrina mismanagement and incompetence to “no child left behind” (children in extreme poverty up 20% since Bush took office) to the $3 trillion dollar tax giveaway to the rich. Particulars on the last item: supply-side (trickle-down) economics is a bogus theory promoted by those who benefit from it. In a mature capitalist system, supply side never rules, it’s always the demand side of the equation that governs growth and well-being. Think about the 1930s Depression, General Motors had plenty of supply, but demand evaporated.

Previous U.S. recessions have been cured with only $200 billion in tax cuts targeted to the middle class, because the consumer (the great middle class) spends that tax cut and primes the economic pump. But George Bush has raised the debt that your children and grandchildren will have to pay from almost $6 trillion to almost $9 trillion for this current recovery, which is uniquely without wage gains, and which has shrunk the middle class that makes America strong and great. Corporations (the supply side) are now loaded with cash, but there’s no place to spend it because they don’t see any demand. So many corporations are using that cash to buy back their stock -- WOW, isn’t supply side wonderful in how it fulfills America’s needs? As the rich-poor divide increases, we’re headed toward previous shining examples of trickle-down economics: South America of the recent past and feudalism in the Middle Ages (South America and feudalism also had no wage gains). This is such good evil by our Christian President and his myriad of engorged friends.

I see a dark future for the country we all love. Even our Constitution is at risk when a President says he speaks directly to God (witness how God/Allah influences and corrupts Islamic attempts at democracy). The Constitution guarantees freedom to all, and freedom for all from tyranny. Our precious Constitution binds us together as a nation, and allegiance to it is the definition of patriotism.

    George Bush and Jesus
My opinion says that the VERY reason that George W. Bush is so hated, is that he publicly and unashamedly declares that Jesus is His Lord--- pure and simple, and no other reason can explain the virulent hatred.
There are many of us out here in the "flyover Jesus land" (which the pols declared us to be in the last election,) who fervently and daily pray the words in Isaiah 54:17 over our President and our leaders. For those of you who are unfamiliar with God's written word to us--the Bible-- it states that "But in that coming day, no weapon turned against you will succeed. And everyone who tells lies in court will be brought to justice" (New Living Translation"). I like the King James translation even better--but this gives you the idea... since we have faith in our prayers to our Father in heaven, then we believe this will come to pass. Like it or leave it.
    So be it.

    Improving civility...
    JohnCitizen said:

"Nonbelievers of Bush’s Christian values and policies are viewed with contempt, instead of as fellow citizens in a pluralistic democracy. Civility has gone out of our civilization..."

One can easily agree that "civility" has gone down, but - I humbly sumbmit - it is a poor reading of history to declare that non-believers are viewed with contempt without also acknowledging the 100+ year-long, systematic, contemptuous degrading of the common culture and especially the Judeo-Christian influence that built that common culture. The last 20 to 30 years especially have been so degrading to cherished Christian ideals, that it should not be any surprise to see a strong Christian (Right) response. A long, rich lineage of Christian ideas and ideals profoundly (to say the least) influenced the founding, re-founding (ACW) and the subsequent prosperity of this nation. These great ideals have been subverted by the coarsening of the common culture, but fortunately they are deeply placed in the hearts of most Americans - they can be restored.

We can talk about improving civility, and improving the common discourse. Attacking Christianity won't get us there.

    If God does not exist...
then we each must live an ethical life for its own sake. Some will not, but religions haven't stopped that either.

So Hollywood is hostile to religion. This is news? It's been going on in increasing degrees for the last 30 years.

The 9th Circuit decision reminds of the joke about born-agains not being able to have sex standing up. It might lead to dancing.

For the last few years, teenage pregnancies have declined.

Who cares what Rosie thinks? Madonna always did have that "look at me!" complex, kind of like T.O. Seek counseling.

    Steve, at 11:18
I agree with your post. We've all become reactionary. It's all tit-for-tat. Both sides need to sit down, figure out where they agree, come back to the middle and shut out the snipers that are in the extremist wings of each sides. Unfortunately our current campaign funding methods stop that cold. Extremism pays.

    God
If God does not exist, nothing exists....simple first cause.

    Laziness
Johncitizen just cut and pasted the above article from his post at Olasky's column. It wasn't worth reading the first time. Just more uncivil Bush and Christ hatred.

Why evolution is not a fact
This article is the truth and I believe that the majority (once silent, but NOT anymore!) of Americans are in agreement with what was written here.

One of the greatest problems is that our children are being brainwashed and indoctrinated in the public schools by the liberal teachers who were taught by the liberal professors who have taken over the universities. Our children are taught that the THEORY of evolution is a proven scientific fact. I'm sorry, but no scientist has shown a proof of evolution in a test tube or any other truly scientific experiment. Why is that? It's because it can't be done! They start with a theory and then try to make the facts fit the theory and they even get that to work. Recently there was a news article on the internet about some archaelogists who found a human footprint in the same fossil as a dinosaur. How do they explain that?! Evolution teaches that the dinosaurs died out MILLIONS of years before humans appeared on earth. I'm waiting for the explanation from the evolutionists, but I'm not giving up eating while I wait.

The only reason to teach only evolution as a fact is to eliminate the concept of any kind of a Creator and thereby remove any absolutes from our philosophical sphere. Then man is only an animal and without any absolutes to control him, man descends to the same nature as any other animal. Once he is only an animal, he can act like an animal and no one can say he is doing anything wrong. An animal acts on instincts and can't control itself. The ideas behind evolution led to all the greatest massacres in the history of mankind. Hitler was just trying to help evolution speed up. Stalin did the same thing. It happened in China too. All of those leaders decided that certain people were worthy of being the ( fittest) survivors using some criteria and that the rest were inferior and therefore would eventually die out anyway. They just helped evolution out so that it wouldn't take millions of years to come to pass.

If your mind isn't already made up, think about it and if you disgree, argue using logic, not just throwing out cliches and calling people who disagree with you names. I hope you don't say, "Don't confuse me with the FACTS, my mind's made up".

    cloudbuster
"And equally, if God does not exist, nothing is permitted."

"God does not exist" is the foundation of tyranny, for exactly the same reason that it is the hallmark of anarchists.

cloudbuster thinks that this is meaningless or stupid. He is not thinking.

Dost. in context (giving away the plot)
The "if there is no God.." is from The Brothers Karamazov, and the character who says it is Ivan, the intellectual brother who is struggling with the question of God's existence. His concern for human suffering has led him to question a benevolent God, but he struggles with the possibility of rejecting God. His illegitamate half-brother, tragically takes this as permission to act as if anything is permitted. I think this is what Sears is worried about--a society without a soul is a scary thing.

Where have I heard this before?
You know, this same type of debate raged over a century ago when Darwin's theory (a 99.9999% proven theory, by the way, Mr. truthbetold) came out. I guess the debate will keep raging for a while.

Bottom line: you get your values from your parents. My father is the most moral person I've ever known, and he made darn sure to pass those values on to me. They include respect, honesty, the value of hard work, patience, curiousity, all the good ones. He is also the most completely atheistic person I've ever known. He's read the Bible, but only for its literary value; only goes inside a church for a wedding or a funeral; and absolutely can't stand anyone trying to preach to him. He doesn't have much personal spirituality either. Why did he retain his values if he wasn't scared into it by the threat of going to H-E-double hockeysticks? He knew that if you have those values, you'll get ahead in life. If you don't get them, you're screwed. So he passed them on me, and I intend to pass them on my kids. There's just no other way to play it if I want them to have a good life, same as all parents want. It's plain old Darwinian self interest and competitive advantage.

Religion plays a role in values for some, but the answer to the values problem today (if in fact it's real) won't be solved by just building more churches. It requires a much more comprehensive answer, one that works for people of faith and rationalists alike.

    They say There's No God??
If there's no God like they claim, why are they obsessed with consently mocking Him??? Why are they desparite to prove He doe'nt exsist?? If there were no God, What are they so excited about??? Maybe they fear Him, Maybe deep inside they feel guilty??? If theres no God like they say and claim, then only evil would fill the earth, maybe that's what it will come too. I beleive there is a Good God, who exsist, just as there is good and evil, black and white, day and night, darkness and light. Maybe that is human, to beleive, that is faith, that is human my friend. For if you beleive, you have a dream, a hope a Prayer. I Pray for this nation and this world, because if we beleive only the human is in charge, brother are we in for a dusey of an evil that will snuff out our exsistence.

    Man Has become Beast
Without that God, Without that faith, Man has become a beast. Man having un-natural sex with man, becoming hotter and hotter, so hot in fact he is surely preparing to burn in h*ll. I pray that he will turn from sin and turn to God, and repent his sinful, willful, and most degrading humiliation. For God created Man and woman, that is the creation on mankind God gave as a gift to be fruitful and mulitply. Children love their parents, parents love their children, Parents do not want to lie to their youths. This is a gift of life given to the Man and woman of God Almighty. Amen!!!! Praise Jesus!!!!

    The beloved neighbor
I agree with Frey. Unbelief does not put a poison bullet into the heart of each and every ethical decision.

In civil society, when a man, for whatever reason, loves marital fidelity, respects property and seeks the enrichment of his neighbor, is zealous for the protection of his neighbor's life and reputation, guarding his heart against covetousness and envy, this should matter to us very much. When he prizes freedom of religious expression, even in the self-interest of freedom not to worship, he is offering us assistance against those who seek to destroy freedom.

After all, Biblical ethics includes the honor of mother and father, respecting their lessons of life, "that it may be well with you".

Frey says as much: "There's just no other way to play it if I want them to have a good life, same as all parents want."

We should prize even his reasons that uphold these convictions.

"It's plain old Darwinian self interest and competitive advantage."

Even if these are not reasons but rationalizations, he is an ally in combatting the use of these same sentences for the rationalization of self-destruction and tyranny.

Such a man is my beloved neighbor.

    Human/dino prints
"Recently there was a news article on the internet about some archaelogists who found a human footprint in the same fossil as a dinosaur."

Hardly recent. I read about that in "After Its Kind" 25 years ago. I've heard references but not seen photos of the stone. Time to hit the web.

    Hmmmmm, no.
"If God does not exist, nothing exists....simple first cause."

Steven Hawking begs to disagree with you. Not that he can prove his theory any better than you can...

    No God, no ethics?
"If theres no God like they say and claim, then only evil would fill the earth..."

I disagree. Not necessarily. I read that your supposition is that only people who believe in God have morals and ethics. I have very little religion and I'm honest to a fault, which has worked to my detriment many times. That's not to say I've never lied, but I'm a lousy liar and I know it, so I generally don't.

The simplest part of my ethics is that it's easiest to get through life when you don't p1ss people off. That mostly just involves being honest.

This one refers to the print debunked in the first link:

Having seen the photos now, it looks to me like the "human" footprints are not in nearly as good shape as the dino prints. My feeling is that they're either natural or something else that eroded into that shape.

Sure, scripture says there "were giants on the earth in those days." Look up "giant sloth" or "uintatherium". Those animals were huge, and contemporaneous with humans, though maybe not in the same place.

    Thanks, Mr. Sears
Alan Sears seems like a wonderful man. Many thanks to him for his continued great work through the ADF and the Community Defense Counsel. Excellent point in this article also about Rosie and Islam.
