I must not be a congressman

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

There’s no money in my freezer. I just checked. Not $90,000. Not a penny. Just some ground beef, frozen pizza, and ice cream.

I must not be a congressman.

Congressman William Jefferson (D-La.) had $90,000 in his freezer. The FBI thinks that’s odd. Now that I think of it, it does seem a bit odd. A lot of cool cash, though.

No one’s taken me on a great vacation to play golf in Scotland. But former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Tex.) and Congressman Bob Ney (R-Ohio) got a lavish trip. For free, in fact.

Of course, I’m not a congressman. And I don’t play golf.

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and some other Senators are big boxing fans. But please realize that when these solons accept free tickets to see the fights, they go not just for fun, but also for work. They’re always on the clock, learning about this great country they manage to miraculously keep afloat.

I’m no Senator, so for me to score a free ticket to something, I have to actually have a friend. However, it’s nice that I can cheer for my team without ever once pretending I’m really there on a fact-finding mission.

But I’m no boxing fan. Sure, boxers are great athletes, but somehow hitting people about the head and face in an attempt to knock them unconscious hardly seems like sport.

Tennis anyone?

Sen. Reid also happens to be a brilliant real estate investor. He knocked down a cool $1.1 million in a deal that just came to light. (Though, I betcha Reid never keeps his dough in the freezer.)

But what Reid isn’t as good at is filing his financial disclosure reports with the U.S. Senate. He failed to note this deal. That’s a violation of Senate rules. The deal was also with a fellow whose name has popped up in bribery and organized crime investigations . . . but hey: innocent until proven guilty.

Thank goodness I don’t have to disclose all my financial transactions. Even though I’m not a congressman, I do indeed know the feeling of getting raked over the coals on finances. Like when the charge card bill comes in and my wife sees how many mochas I’ve charged at Starbucks.

Amazing indeed is the long track record of phenomenal investing success by congresspersons — from New York Senator Hillary Clinton’s acumen with cattle futures to former Speaker of the House Tom Foley’s $100,000 IPO. I guess I’ve done okay in my investments, but I’m not a congressman — certainly no Hillary. I just invest as my wife suggests (when I’m wise). Of course, my wife can’t get us any of those IPOs. And she’s adamant that we steer clear of cattle futures.

Former Congressman Randy Cunningham (R-Calif.) got all kinds of money and free stuff for being a congressman. The bribes totaled some $2.4 million. That won’t even fit in your run-of-the-mill freezer. He also got limo rides, prostitutes, a Rolls Royce and even a $2,200 French toilet.

Since Congress mandated these stupid low-flow toilets that don’t work, I can hardly blame Cunningham for looking for something better. Many of us are looking for a solution, even if that means going with expensive foreign toilets. At my house, not having any generous lobbyist friends, we just flush twice.

Funny, there is absolutely no ban on gifts to me at all and yet no one has ever offered me a Rolls or a fancy French toilet. (Still, you can just email me if you want to know my shirt size or my favorite books or CDs.)

By the way, I asked for a raise in pay the other day. Yeah, now I really must not be a congressman. They don’t have to ask.

And then there’s Congressman Mark Foley and the salacious emails he sent to underage House pages. Nothing humorous about that. But for the record, let me just state again, unequivocally, that I am not now and have never been a congressman.

When I heard about Foley’s behavior I immediately thought of my own kids and how important it is to keep them safe. It was moments later that I first considered how this scandal could affect the party control of Congress.

Well, I must not be a congressman.

Polls show Americans hold Congress in historically (and almost hysterically) low esteem. Congress is supposed to be the world’s greatest representative assembly. But just whom do they represent?

You? Me? I sure hope not.

If you think there is any risk that this Congress might represent you by resembling you, resist doing whatever sleazy thing might be tempting you. Just repeat to yourself: “I must not be a congressman . . . I must not be a congressman . . .”

Professor Turley esquire
recently professor Tirley visited my college and suggested that he could go to any reasonably sized town and pick 535 people randonly and we would end up with a better House and Senate.

I must not be congressman
Actually, the problem here is that I have the wrong refridgerator.

I say any refridgerator that's full of money is a good one to own. I've always liked cold, hard cash!

:-)

(Blatent plug for a blog on a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT topic -- but since nobody's covering it right now, how else can I put in blatent plugs?)

True conservatives don't want to " 'generally' wish to control other people's personal behavior". They want government out of our lives and to stick to what the Fed's were meant to provide; primarily national security.

True conservatives want a small government that leaves most regulation to the states and the markets.

I am thoroughly disgusted with both R's and D's in DC.

JT
There is a difference between Liberals and Conservatives and both are needed by this country. Check out my blog (click my name) for my take on the subject.

Unfortunately, we have no real conservatives in power at this time. And, since most of campaigning any more is deciding what to promise who, I am not sure there can be.

And to whoever it was who said the US is going the way of Rome. It is not just us. It is Western civilization. We will either wake up and do something, or be conquered by the Muslims, Chinese, and Latinos. They have something they believe in, are growing and expanding, and are willing to work to see their vision come to pass. Western civilization just is unwilling to defend itself and so may soon pass away.

Diff Between Liberals and Conservatives
Is there a difference? Sure. BOTH liberals and conservatives wish to use the monopoly police power of the State to force people into certain kinds of behavior.

The difference is that liberals 'generally' wish to control other people's pocketbooks while conservatives 'generally' wish to control other people's personal behavior. I find both to be morally reprehensible. People should be left to do as they please (and to make their own decisions, good or bad)as long as they do not harm others. Unfortunately, this is not good enough for the statist control freaks that run for elected office.

Since you are not going to vote, don't gripe about the results.

Congressional Disposition
As I have often remarked, our National Legislature consists of two Houses of Ill Repute.

JT_Lancer -- don't confuse the issue
If you're referring to Democrats and Republicans, then you're absolutely correct.

There *IS* a very fundamental difference between liberals and conservatives. Unfortunately, that difference is vanishingly small when you're talking about Democrats and Republicans.

Leftie? Rightie? What's the difference?
Hardly a leftie here. What's the difference between them anyways? You would expect a president that has increased federal spending more than any president in history to be a "leftie", yet George Bush is that president. In fact, what is 'conservative' about conservatives? They no longer make any legitimate pretense to being in favor of limited government and greater individual freedom. That's only election year rhetoric when the Democrats control the White House. Republicans are addicted to spending other people's money even more than the Dems are.

JT_Lancer
Even for a leftie, that was a very week atempt.

Two More Words
Don't vote.

Even if you vote for the "Lesser of Two Evils", you're still voting for evil.

Voting for "representation" is like a slave choosing his Master. FREE YOURSELVES, SHEEPLE!

TRUTH
The Truth Shall Set You FREE!!! My heart hurts for my children!!!

And to think about it all of us are wondering if our retirment plans are going to be enough and any one of these CROOCKS have made sure they will be taken care for sure!!!

Two Words
Term limits

September12Republican: Well said.
Judging from the current crop of misfits in Congress, if their lack of Morality and disdain for
truth,and missing spine, is qualification.
Then we should be looking to the prison system, for our next crop of missfits.

Doc's Statistics are Not Surprising

When you consider the high emotional price of running for public office -- our newsmedia seem to specialize in reputational rape -- it is not at all surprising that Congress is populated with ego maniacs and folks with mental defects.

I wouldn't run for public office, and I bet that most of the posters on this site would never think of running either. In my case, it's no great loss. I'm not qualified for the job. But I know from having read this site for the past several months that there are many T.H. posters that would make fine public servants. Unfortunately for our nation, I suspect that few of these qualified persons would put themselves and their families through the experience.

It's a shame.

AND
Those who betray a public trust as well as violating the law usually get off with a scolding for something an ordinary citizen would go to prison for.

baseballdr
Part time congress'oh God'that sounds sooo,good.
And a Permanent pay cut,and they follow the same laws as we so.

I totally agree with your law angle, every new law is a hatchet mark on freedom.

Vote Third Party
You see we have this article, and everybody complains about how awful their candidate is.

Then you go to another article, and everybody shouts and screams to vote Republican because the Democrats would be worse.

I'm tired of having to choose between TweedleDum and TweedleDummer. Tweedle-Crooked and Tweedle-Crookeder.

I say vote third party. That's almost guaranteed to at least NOT be the incumbent.

Just don't vote Green. They're Socialist and proud of it. Unlike the Democrats who are Socialist but try to hide it.

Our wonderful Congress

I suspect most of us have heard of these numbers, I know I have, but I don't have the NAMES. Perhaps if we did we could all help the situation. Any help wuld be appreciated.

Can you imagine working for a company that has a little more than 500 employees and has the following statistics:

29 have been accused of spousal abuse
7 have been arrested for fraud
19 have been accused of writing bad checks
117 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at_least 2 businesses
3 have done time for assault
71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit
14 have been arrested on drug-related charges
8 have been arrested for shoplifting
21 are currently defendants in lawsuits
84 have been arrested for drunk driving in the last year...

These are our 535 members of the United States Congress. The same group that crank out hundreds of new laws each year designed to keep the rest of us in line ---

Ed

A reflection of society?
It has occurred to me that the character of congress may just be a mirror of our society. If that is not so, then how is it that people keep electing and returning these reprobates to office?

Michigan was doomed to fail-unions are Communist styled institutions. We now know without question Communism is a failed philosophy; all Michigan has to do is de-unionize and create a working mentality where workers believe--honestly believe-- "they are the company". The mentality of "I work only to enjoy my off-work time" must be stripped out and discarded. Michigan was the guts of our industrial age but the "We-they, Communist adversarial mentality" virtually bankrupted some the most profitable companies that ever existed. Too bad--but some saw it coming--and some still seek warmth under the blanket of Marxism.

WARRIOR.. AGAIN
That was a great response to Freedom. It is absolutely terrible what has happened to this once great nation. It would be great if it were as simple as HatLady suggest, and just flush Washington DC right down the crapper.

Being a life time resident of Michigan, in the past four I have watched our Governor, Jennifer Granholm, run this state right down the same crapper that Washington needs to visit. Michigan leads the country in unemployment as businesses are leaving the state in record numbers. Mortgage foreclosures and personal bankruptcy filings are at all time highs. The Real Estate market is non existent and home values are dropping faster than bombs fell on Iraq five years ago, right before victory was announced. But just like the same corrupt politicians in Washington keep being reelected, because of Jennifer Granholm's support of her Democratic constituents, constituents who know that she will continue to provide them with government assistance for doing absolutely nothing, will probably be reelected again by voters who because of the above mentioned facts are willing to ignore the fact that their governor has single handily run the Michigan economy right in to the ditch. Go figure.

Heads Need To Roll

If you want change...
Never vote for an incumbent.

IMHO to truly get rid of the corruption, no one serving in Congress should be able to run for office. Then they have no reason to accept the bribes, except of course for pure greed. They should have to return home for at least on cycle before running again.

Freedom
You ask:"Are we offered ANYTHING that isn't corrumpt?"
Do you see the hopelessness in your question and yet you are resigned to accept that hopelessness without anger or determination to fix the problem. Me too--I am just like you--I hate what we have become. I am frustrated by my own inability to take up arms and march to Washington to protect this great Republic. I am patiently watching my world slip away while hoping someone will step up and martial every veteran that has ever served this country. Extoll them to take their arms(we all have weapons) and march enmass on Washington, DC to demand fair and honest government and strict adherence to the Constitution. No more Socialism/Communism, no more using tax dollars to buy votes from people who made bad decisions in their lives, no more blurring of the lines that separate the 3 branches of government, no more forgiveness for those that violate the public trust, no more sedition by those in public office, no more sedition by the press, no more indoctrination of our children in the public schools or our universities, and no more professional politicians. If I were younger, I would try to organize such a march but I have waited too long, not because I did not see, but I believed those that spread the myth of the swinging pendulum. The pendulum does not exist except on your clock and even it only moves the hands in one direction. We must force change, not by changing a politician here and a politician there, but by a new beginning--one that begins where our Founding Fathers first illuminated the path we were supposed to follow.

Are We A Corrupt Society?
Congress may just be a reflection of the culture of the American people.

Our Christian churches ignore the Bible. Our businesses ignore their customers. (Have you dealt with a credit card company recently?) Judges ignore the law, and "class action" lawyers get millions while their clients get pennies. Doctors ignore their patients (what can you learn in 10 minutes) and hospitals ignore procedures for patient safety.

It takes credible moral institutions to reform a society, and I don't know any. The US may be going the way of the Roman Empire. Is it too late to turn back?

What are the choices?
Are we offered ANYTHING that isn't corrumpt? I don't think so!

I like This
Paul has lightheartedly , yet seriously, touched the core of Congressional corruption. Paul has defined the art of rationalization as practiced by 535 people who were elected by us. We have failed. Some of us vote for people based on looks, some based on gender, some based on race, and some based on sexual preference. Some we vote for are scoundrels and we vote for them without knowing their true nature or intent. Some we vote for are racist like Robert Byrd and Charlie Rangle, some are homosexuals like Barney Franks and Foley, some are thieves like William Jefferson and Nye, some are liars and adulterers like President Bill Clinton, Harry Reid (just a liar as far as I know) and John Kerry, some are alcoholics like Ted Kennedy and Foley (of course he is), some are full fledged Communist like Dennis Kucinich, and Charlie Schumer and many, many more are Socialist which makes them thieves and practitioners of Marxist principles. ALL of them are hiding the truth about themselves and their contempt for the people who elect them. If I were a Communist, liar, alcoholic, homosexual, thief and you elected me to office; I would hold you at the highest level of contempt as I laughed myself to sleep every night while mentally spending the cool cash in my freezer.

Convince the folks back home
True, most people say the congress is filled with corrupt politicians (are there any other kind?), except theirs. Therein lies the problem. You have to be able to convince people that their representative is as much a crook as the ones that make the news. Until you can do this the "ambiance" from D.C. will continue.

Congress I figured it out
It takes two flushes on my low flow toilet to get the contents all the was to Washington.

Bad “leaders”
The Old Testament shows countless examples of people getting bad judges and bad rulers (as well as invasions) as a consequence for turning away from God.

We should be thankful that the current crop of thieves and perverts are only as bad as they are. The rate at which we are abandoning God would indicate a much darker future.

I must not be a congressman
I really don't WANT to be a congressman, as CONgress is the opposite of PROgress. I guess a little fat man in a white suit and hat, smoking a fat cigar, would look right at home in D.C. (District of Corruption).
Speaking of the fast-flush toilets, how's about just flushing the whole D.C. nasty down the toilet? The smell is just AWFUL!

You Must Not Be From the Sixties
if you believe that there IS in fact something wrong with all that.

But I know where it comes from.

Listen to your kids right after you have told them "You can't go to the Hamptons for the weekend" or "You're not staying out all night at a hourse party where I do not know any of the people involved" or "You're too young to go to Paris even if we could afford it".

"WHEN I GROW UP," your kid will probably yell, "I'M GONNA DO ANYTHING I WANT TO DO AND YOU CAN'T STOP ME!"

Watch the commercials urging you to buy Lotto tickets. They all intimate that when you have all the money in the world, you can do anything you want to: curse at your boss and disrupt the place; buy a big boat and run down the small boats of other people; spend the rest of your life in a Lazy-Boy Recliner; you name it, if you've got all the money in the world, you can behave like a putz and it'll be okay.

Look at the Hollyweirds, of whatever age -- see them behaving like total jerks and dangerous offenders and Not Getting Punished? That's what your kids wanted to grow up to be.

"WHEN I GROW UP I'LL DO ANYTHING I WANT AND YOU CAN'T STOP ME" works only if you grow up to be rich. And that includes movie stars, rap musicians, lotto winners and congressmen.
