Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Our long national nightmare is nearly over. With Barack saying he might run, with Hillary reported to "be making phone calls to New Yorkers," with Evan Bayh and Sam Brownback getting less coy by the day and with Tom Vilsack actually announcing his candidacy (the correct pronunciation of his name "that's vill-sack, not vile sack"), the 2008 presidential campaign is about to start. The nightmare of not having a national campaign to talk about -- now into its hideous 29th day -- is almost over.

And what a relief. The cycle of election period followed by governing period followed by election period was getting seriously out of proportion. Election cycles may be vulgar, demagogic, hypocritical, mudslinging exercises in misleading the American people and corrupting the democratic process -- but they are essentially harmless. Those governing periods, however, are downright dangerous.

I think all Americans can agree that a month of it this time was quite enough. Even with Congress having been largely out of town and the president having been largely abroad, this last month has been a perilous period of bad policy formulation and ill-considered congressional leadership selections.

Far better that we spend the next 25 months selecting the next scapegoat to be sacrificed on behalf of our refusal to admit to our genuine national problems. And, defying reason and common sense, once again our best and brightest are elbowing each other furiously to be selected for the sacrificial honor.

Actually, in logic and grammar, all the candidates cannot be our best and brightest. All but one could only be considered our better and brighter. And, as one looks down the list, not many of even those seem to be available. But, there is a national media consensus -- concurred in by the candidate himself -- that the best and brightest is walking amongst us even now and may soon audaciously condescend to throw his oversized hat into the ring.

Barack Obama is before us. All rise. And remember, his name spelled backward is Kcarab Amabo -- which sounds better than my name backward -- Ynot Yelknalb (to which I might respond " I sure am yelknalb).

After two grueling years legislating in the Senate, this man, whose seasoned judgment the world will be relying on for its very survival, assesses that this is the optimum moment for him to lead the world. Everything he has done and thought in the last several months has prepared him for this moment. He is now at the peak of his experience and sagacity.

Apparently his strategy for victory is to rely on his undoubted open-faced good looks and his high natural intelligence. Men have certainly been elected with less. (e.g. Warren Harding). They have also been elected with more (e.g. about 35 of the other 42 presidents).

Presumably he believes that his life is an open book (if a short one). For his sake, I hope it is. But even if he has lived a blameless life (as I presume he has), in the coming months his opponents will be busy scribbling in their own addendums. One opponent in particular is surrounded by a team of operatives who, over long and successful careers, have mastered the art of drawing mustaches on their opponents.

If Hillary Milhous Clinton begins to believe that Sen. Obama is a threat to her inheritance of the White House -- it will not be long before his own mother will not recognize the public image that Hillary's operatives will have drawn of him. He could ask Paula Jones (and all the other innocent women "her husband" attempted to seduce and abandon), or Ken Starr (one of the nation's most admired jurists before he was assigned to investigate "her husband."

Or consider my old boss Newt Gingrich -- Clinton's primary political opponent in the 1990s. Clinton's IRS very publicly opened an investigation of Newt for tax fraud. They kept it open for years, and then, a few weeks after he retired, the IRS quietly announced the investigation was complete and he was innocent. But not before Democrats spent years using that phony investigation as a basis for calling Newt a tax cheat. That's the way the Clintons play the game. They call it the policy of personal destruction. For Obama's sake, I hope he is ready for the game he is so anxious to get into.

At the other end of the field, the left-wing activist base is already questioning his lack of convictions. In The Huffington Post earlier this week, Nation magazine's David Sirota wrote an article entitled "The Ridiculousness and Danger that is Obama '08": " ... [H]e doesn't actually seem to aspire to anything outside of the Washington power structure ... and doesn't seem to be interested in challenging the status quo in any fundamental way ... Obama is a candidate who has kept his record deliberately thin, who has risked almost nothing for the bigger movement, and ... has gone out of his way to reinforce dishonest stereotypes about the left ... " And those were some of the kinder statements that can be found on the aroused left.

But I'll say this for Sen. Obama. If, over the next 25 months, the young paladin can fend off Hillary's bad boys, Arianna's crazy boys and the GOP's back room boys, he may in fact be ready for the big game against Bin Laden's murderous boys.

What does Obama Stand for??
Can someone please tell me & what about Shrillary, has she ever been asked a question she didn't have a rehearsed answer for?

Remember Howard Dean?
I've seen or heard nothing (so far) that indicates Obama possesses serious leadership qualities. He can utter sweet nothings like the best of them, but so what? Boilerplate platitudes are just that.

Obama's an exotic pet. Oh, the media will love him until they learn he messes up his cage like all the other congress-critters, then dump him for the next Great Left Hope. Anybody remember Howard Dean?

Michael Steele
I like the idea FOR Michael - what's the argument against him?

Oh and..
I don't want John McCain to be the Republican nominee. He's a RINO and a suck up and weak.

Barak Obama..
reminds me of Jimmy Carter.
Here came this peanut farmer out of Georgia that the media fawned over. He seemed like a nice guy. (Although that has since been proven incorrect) He was a "fresh face". He had no real record to speak of. All the things people are saying about Obama. The country elected him and we ended up with the worst president ever.
No one really knows what Obama stands for. He seems to play both sides of the fence when you look at what he's said in interviews and speeches.
The Clintons however are masters at making people who get in their way either seem vile in the public eye to the point of having them just shut their mouths, or disappear.
Too bad not many of the politicians have a real spine on either side.
Now the Australians, those pols know how to tell the pc police to get lost. Too bad they have gun control and laws that go against rights we hold dear. Still, our pols could take a lesson on how to grow a set.

Hat trick
My prediction: Obama tries to have some encounter with team Hillary to negotiate terms. She will offer none – agreement. He asks they not harm each other in view of the "greater ideals" -- and focus on the real enemy “the vast right wing conspiracy” -- for the good of the country. Obama doesn’t stand a chance there.

It sounds like a cat fight. Obama will show naïveté if he even anticipates some arrangement from team Hill.

on the road
One thing for certain, if Obama is “entertaining” thoughts he better entertain the finances too. Can he handle that battle? Hillary is already shopping for a communication strategist. She spent a million with no real opposition lasttime. Can Obama compete?

Obama won't run
Barrack Obama is showing leg, nothing more. He knows he can't be elected president any time soon. Although he would win 99 percent of the black vote, you can add about 10-15 percent to any Republican's white vote against him. John McCain, Mitt Romney and Rudy Guiliani would each win about 70 % of the white vote against Obama. The Republican would win all the south, the interior west, much of the upper midwest, some of the mid-Atlantic and even some of New England. Barrack Obama would have a difficult time besting Michael Dukakis' electoral vote total of 1988.

Sadly, I see a Hillary Rodham Clinton-Evan Bayh ticket defeating a demoralized John McCain-(Lindsay Graham/Kay Bailey Hutchison/Tim Pawlenty/Mitt Romney/Rudy Guiliani/George Voinovich/?) ticket for the GOP in 2008. And that would put Obama at the back of the bus, figuratively.

NO CANDIDATE!
Not a single prospective Candidate has any executive experience whatever.
Even the manager of your local department store is better qualified to be President.
You can throw McCain in the same pot with Barak & Billery!

______________
Gunny
I hope you bought some seirra "Blitz" or Hornady SX so no cripples crawl away.

aryling,

No one gets permission to forget about Hillary. Anyone who thinks she’ll be upstaged by some upstart, smooth, Chicago politician, has another thing coming. Resistance is futile.

On the serious side
Obama is an educated, articulate black with an articulate, educated, attractive wife. With his articulate oratory and quick mind I would want him arguing my side in any court.

These qualifications, however, could work against him. The problem is that a person of his abilities is usually shunned by the black community as not being black enough. With his abilities and accomplishments he has probably been accused of trying to be white although it hasn't made the press yet.

Although he probably won't get oreo cookies thrown at him there will be some skepticism of him from certain quarters.

The upcomming show
For how long now have we watched as the vast left wing conspiracy (I always wanted to say that) machine attacked the right? I'm looking forward to the upcomming entertainment.

How many hit pieces will the Clinton machine release to the MSM late Friday afternoon so they will become the topic of the weekend talk shows? How many charges of racism will be leveled against Hil and the hit machine? Maybe she will even be accused of hanging a skeleton as a haloween decoration. (See Mike Adams today for clarification.) How many oponents will be acused of sexism for not having enough female workers in high positions?

On top of all that entertainment, how much fun can we have stiring the pot now and then? How many pearls of wisdom will come from Kimberly, Phylo and the rest of the group endorsing their favorite?

Sit back and enjoy.

kENNEDY
there is a nice sound clip played here on local radio (Boston) of Ted Kennedy -D chivas, saying lets just ask Osama Obama , Osama Barack ,ahhh , aahhh. Boy does he have a way with words!

What's Tony smoking?
That last paragraph got me: "If...[he convinces people he is a successful politician]...[then]he may in fact be ready for the big game against Bin Laden's murderous boys."

In all seriousness, I ask you, in what solar system? Obama has no experience at anything, much less US Senator. The local Chicago dog catcher has more experience than this con-job.

All Rise, because this has got to be the most galactically STUPID article Tony has ever written.

Correction: That's V.P. Obama
There's no way Hillary's thugs will allow the babe that is Obama to waltz past her, after all the time she has spent positioning herself for this moment. Look for scorched-earth tactics we have never experienced, if the man from the Land of Lincoln even pretends to pose a threat. More likely though, she could just as easily buy off this empty-suit darling of the media with the V.P. slot.

Obama, the sweetheart . . .
of Sigma Chi.

This guy attended Columbia University and then went to Havard Law. He never got his hands dirty but still professes to understand the struggle of black America. In other words, he mouths the usual platitudes for the black consumption on the Socialist-Democrat Plantation.

Hillary will choose this token black guy for her V.P. and then profess to be oh-so-tolerant ("See? I've got a negro as my running mate!" Hillary will gush).

FLUFF
I live in Illinois. Since he has been elected, he has said nothing. He has gotten a pass on all tough questions (never been asked in public about his pro-partial-birth-abortion stance)from the media, who are in love with him in Chicago, and what little he does say is all FLUFF. He has gotten by on his good looks, and charisma, period.
The only good thing to come from a presidential run by Hilary Clinton is that it will expose Obama to the U.S. voter and, more importantly, the Illinois voter.

How do people function with eyes shut?
When Rick Warren invited the pro-homosexual, pro-unlimited-abortion Barack Obama to speak at Saddleback Church, Warren tried to convince us that it was okay because Obama was technically not preaching from the pulpit. But did this make the slightest difference to Obama's real intent? No, it did not; for the video footage was just as useful to Obama's self-promotion as if he HAD preached from the pulpit. Hardly a day had passed before Obama was all over the TV news, making the most of the opportunity to pretend that his far-far-leftwing views are somehow compatible with the Christian faith of the red-state voters he needs to deceive. Shame on you, Rick Warren, for helping the Obama campaign!

Joseph Ravitts

President Obama. Strange sounding.
Boy, if we had a President Obama, Ted Kennedy would really be in trouble. He wouldn't know what end was up - Osama, Obama, whatever. Where am I - USA, Afghanistan??

Your column is hilarious. But I ask, why do all these people want to be abused, investigated, ridiculed, yelled at, etc. Spending tons of money & tons of time, taking time from their families, living in motels and hotels, making speeches and talking all the time, having to deal with reporters, not to mention the money. Ah, the money - about $200,000 for a sitting president, per year? What else could it be? Is there more money than we know coming their way? I bet that is it!!

Obama vs Osama
Come now, Tony. Being capable of finishing off Hillary and Arianna does not make one capable of dealing with the bin Laden gang. I've heard nothing from Senator Obama on that subject that rises above Mr King's nostrum "Can't we just all get along?"

You're Kidding, Right??
Barack Obama will deserve to be President of the United States because he may prove a cagey and crafty enough politician to survive the dirty underhanded tricks of other dishonest unprincipled politicians????

I beg to differ. Barack Obama no more deserves to be President than Hillary or Algore or Kerry any other deceitful communist anti-American democrat (and that includes McCain).

If "people" like these are the best we can do we are really in trouble. We need another Ronald Reagan.

Thinking as syndicalists,
in both logic and grammar, all the candidates CAN be our best and brightest." We would take them as a mathematical set, all the elements of which ... etc.

But that's a fantasy, or rather a useful fiction, like the square root of negative one.

Oh, Tony, I'm growing flusterated with you. Obama's backward name is not Kcarab Amabo, it's Amabo Kcarab. His nameS backward would be as you state.

You cannot believe how important I think this is.

Neither can I.

And I don't. I don't believe I think it's important, and I don't think it's important. Clear? Because precision is all. Or at least it's in the set of things that make up everything. Clear?

Mr. Blankley
I look forward to reading your columns.

Yes, I suppose if Obama can hold himself in there, take the scrapping, strapping, stomping that all the major players in the game are going to deliver to him, with relish, then perhaps he will have shown himself capable of playing with bin Ladens' thugs.
At least it's a warm up.
