Poll
Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

WASHINGTON -- Republicans have moved closer to the Democrats in a congressional voter-preference poll just as the election campaigns near the official Labor Day starting gate.

The surprising findings in a little-noticed Gallup Poll that were ignored by most of the national news media shows the Democrats barely leading the Republicans by just two points -- 47 percent to 45 percent.

After months of generic polling numbers by Gallup and others showing the GOP lagged far behind the Democrats by a seemingly insurmountable 9 to 10 points, the titanic political battle for control of Congress is virtually dead even. This means we may not experience the feared Category 5 political storm some election analysts have forecast that would topple the GOP's House majority and cut deeply into its grip on the Senate.

The venerable and respected Gallup organization, which did the poll for USA Today, said the GOP's unexpected rise in the polls "represents the Republicans' best performance in a single poll during the 2006 election cycle on this important measure of electoral strength."

In an analysis accompanying its findings last week, Gallup said, "The Republican increase does appear to be significant."

If the race is anywhere near as tight as Gallup said, it gives the GOP a much stronger edge in this year's elections. The chief reason: Republicans tend to turn out in larger numbers in midterm elections. Moreover, the GOP's high-tech, volunteer-driven, voter-turnout apparatus is far superior to anything the Democrats are attempting to patch together.

Who says so? Democrats themselves. "We're not going to be able to match their turnout system," a senior Democratic confessed to me earlier this month. Gallup also acknowledges that Republican voters "are likely to perform better at the polls in November than would be indicated by pre-election surveys based on registered voters."

What has moved the GOP's numbers upward so swiftly?

A big factor was Bush's ascending movement in his job-approval polls to 42 percent, according to Gallup. That's still way below his presidency's highs, but the steady summer climb out of the 30s to 40 percent and, more recently, to 42 percent shows he has halted his downward spiral, especially among Republicans who are beginning to come back home as Bush sharpens the issues in the war on terrorism that divide the two parties.

Equally important was Bush's full-throated response to the foiled Islamic terrorist plot to blow up 10 passenger jets en route to the United States from Great Britain.

In a brilliant piece of intelligence work by British agents, with the help of United States and other intelligence services abroad, Bush jumped on the episode, showing that the terrorist threat to America was still dangerous and could happen at any time, unless we keep up our guard and improve the U.S. intelligence and global-surveillance weapons at our disposal.

His message - that the terrorists have to be right only once, but we have to be right 100 percent of the time -- struck a devastating note at the psyche of the American people who tire of the Iraq war but know we cannot end the war against those who want to blow up Americans.

As I forecast in an earlier column, the bomb plot pushed the president's job-approval score on his handling of terrorism to 55 percent. Americans will vote on many issues that concern them, but safeguarding homeland security has suddenly become a hot issue again. Bush is not going to let that issue fade in the weeks and months to come, senior officials told me last week.

Neither are the Republicans who intend to keep it at the center of their campaign agenda and in sync with Bush's message.

Another factor behind the Republicans' end-of-summer rise in the polls: They have spent the past month reminding voters, particularly the party's base, what they have done for their states and districts. Despite all the justified criticism about wasteful pork-barrel spending, the fact remains that most voters like their tax dollars coming back to them in bridge, road and other public-works projects, and members aren't shy about reminding them about the bacon they've brought home.

A few weeks ago, the Democrats were flying high in the generic polls, foretelling a wave of Republican losses in the House and Senate. But the once-hostile environment has turned noticeably friendlier for Republicans as voters contemplate putting liberal, anti-war Democrats in charge of national security and Bush and the GOP sharpen their message for the campaign to come.

Bringing Home the Pork
So according to this article the Republican base is coming alive because of recent reminders of the terrorist threat and recent reminders of the pork our incumbents have brought home. Sorry guys, but you're going to have to do a lot better than that to get this shaky Republican back into the fold. I've got a novel suggestion for the Republican Party looking to sharpen it's message to the base -- Embrace conservative principles! And no, bringing home the pork does not classify as a conservative principle.

I'm furious at the Washington GOP...
But there's no other choice. The Taxrats just cannot be voted for by a responsible adult.

It's The War, Stupid
The GOP resurgence is directly attributable to the Socialist Surrendercrats' refusal to be serious about national security.

While conservatives may have plenty of domestic policy differences with the Bush Administration, they, and a majority of Americans, have no desire to vote for Retreat & Defeat. Nor do they want to vote for the Party that is against just about every concievable form of intelligence gathering against terror plots, as they hear about Al Qaeda's latest attempt to kill them.

This is why, despite the Liberal Conventional Wisdom that Rudy Guiliani is too "Socially Liberal to win the Republican Primaries" he's been far outdistancing all other GOP candidates in recent polls. Rudy consistently polls in the low 30's while his nearest competitors are in the mid teens and the bulk of the field in the low single digits.

What does Rudy have that the others don't? Simple: He's a proven, effective leader in a crisis or disaster, and he's shown a willingness to act proactively to protect citizens' safety when it comes to crime. There's every reason to believe he'd take the same approach to our foriegn enemies.

When your life is at stake, everything else pales in comparison.

Both parties are out of touch on the immigration issue, so again, any benefit that the Dim's might have gained by Republican inaction is squandered. When it comes to the War, the Dim's have morphed into the Neo-McGovernite Party with a rigid "pacificism at all costs" ideology that sneers at such pedestrian ideas like national defense and pre-emptive action. Just ask Joe Lieberman.

In fact, you'd have to be under a rock to not see that the Lamont-Moveon.org wing of the party is quite willing to let Americans die before they'd let go of their antipathy to all things military or their slavish obeisance to the U.N.

Joisey...
What Guiliani has is name recognition and public respect. But when push comes to shove, a New York homosexual-friendly abortionist has no chance with the National Republicans.

Christian Conservatives don't mess.

Nick speaks the truth...
Simply put, there's no alternative. A chance cannot be taken on the country's sovereignty. By their own admissions, Democrats platitude on the threat of terrorism is heard lockstep. My view is that they have no conception that we are in a religious war because they have no concept of religion.
I truly would love to stay home in November because of the inept way the gov't is being run and the spineless nature of the Republican party in general. It is exacertating how our convervative voices, though loud, clear and articulate, are not being listened to by our elected officials. I do understand, however, that not voting would only compound the issues and problems we strive so hard to battle out here in grassroots America.

sorry about the spelling errors..
In a rush and no time for spell check this morning.
Oh, and God Bless America!!!!

Sammy
I'm with Sammy. The only difference i see between the DEM Dolts and GOP Goofoffs is the speed at which they are heading for the tubes. If the usual incumbant re election rate of 90% continues there will be no turn around. Vote the rascals out. If the DEMs are in and really are so foolish as to mess up the war with the Jihadists, maybe it will scare enough Americans to unite the country.

Liberals must be nervous...
So funny to see the likes of Al Hunt declare a fantasy of Democrat victory for this Fall already, when he forgets he was wrong in 2000, 2002, 2004...

Didn't any of these Elite Beltway Pundits, drooling over a 'Speaker Pelosi' remember the so-called bellwether in San Diego?

Where the deemed winner of the Liberal Partisans, Ms. Busby, lost in significant fashion?

As if all of the the Democrats demeaning, debasing, undermining of US National Security and in the GWOT, will suddenly be forgotton by the vast Majority of the sane American Public.

No, sorry to burst the bubble Democrats, this is going to be a hard fought battle in NOV., and the liberal insanity is not attractive.

This is a great President, rebuked Kyoto-International Courts, strengthened our Military (including substantial pay increases...), created the PATRIOT ACT, brought Bolton to the UN, appointed Conservative Judges: ie: Alito, Brown, Roberts, etc., Cut taxation, provided Tort Reform, Bankruptcy Reform, has kicked tail in the GWOT: not appeasing Iraq, Iran, Syria, N. Korea, empowered the mighty US ARMED Forces to eliminate much of al Qaeda (Zarqawi is now dead too), helped liberate Liberia, Haiti, increased border security funding by 66%, ended capture and release (now instant deportation), not perfect - but clearly in the right direction, after 8 years of negligence...

The Congress may contain some wimps, some Rhinos, but they remain far better than the misguided Democrat Liberal Partisan, and this President needs support.

Few are including the robust economy in their Election predictions. Although history suggests the DNC should pick up seats, the healthy economy suggests little will change.

If the American Public is wise, they will force Ms. Katie Couric to be in tears this Fall on C-BS, delaring the renewed Majorities for the Republicans in the House and Senate, as 'moral victories' for the mindless Democrat Party.

Tony and Nick
Tony, please stick to the ideas being discussed, i find it irritating to read epithets. If i enjoyed ad hominem arguments i'd be reading Al Franken's stuff.

Nick, the way to scare the boys in DC is discuss not voting for them, not admitting that you'll vote because Pelosi scares you. BTW, how do you feel about Janet Reno for the Supreme Court?

Gallup points to GOP resurgence
I didn't see anyone giving credit to the GOP surges due to Jimmy Carters Liberal Judges and their recent ruling on eaves dropping that has visibly upset the voter base with regard to Homeland Security.

HNAV
Really liked what you had to say, glad that someone will appreciate all the things that Bush has done and is doing. However, his comprehensive (amnesty plan)for illegal immigration will ruin his legacy. This will be one of the things that will destroy this great country. History again will repeat if you don't learn from the past - Rome, etc.
Also, I don't appreciate Bush dancing around with the United Nations, not supporting Israel as we should have in these recent rounds, not hard enough on the Iranians, N. Koreans. Then we better get ready for China in the future, who will be our biggest and potentially worst enemy that we ever had.

This Conservative Voting Democrat
Not because I like Democrat politicians. But because I think some gridlock will be good for two years. If there's gridlock, nothing will get done: no new spending programs, no new taxes, no new regulation, no repeals. . . absolutely nothing. I liken it to a time-out period until, hopefully, the RNC can get its act together. Hopefully, the President gets the message if he wants a successor to the Presidency of his own choosing.

So if the choice is between the status quo, meaning a liberal President with the Congress of the same party giving him his wishes; or the alternative of a Republican President and Democratic Congress that doesn't get anything done, I vote for the latter.

Polls help the Conservatives
To me the reality of polls is, the question lead to answers that don't really honestly state the truth thinking of the Average American. The pollsters tend to want to make the Liberals ideology appear to be the majority. With this the Democrats, who have worked for decades with the help of media and the teachers union, used stealth and deception prominence and power. Believing they had a big enough base, they begin to loosen their lips and come out of hiding of their true nature. Example, you think the illegals would have shown their Mexican flags if they knew the American Citizen would have reacted so negatively? The American media lies to the average American all the time. Now they are paying that price by the Democrats believing those lies as well. Though it was scary to see, for the fear that I don't know how effective the teacher union's success in dumbing down the populace, in my thinking I was pleased to see the polls so negative for the President. It emboldened the Democrats. They ignored the fact they had even lower ratings then the President. Also because the polls are deceptive, they can't attain the reason why President polls dropped. I say he lost the base, not because of the war. He lost the base because of Myers and amnesty. He lost the Democrats because of the war as demonstrated by Liberman lost. Democrats believe they have the moderates in their hands. As I stated in another post I was pleased that Liberman lost, because that would demonstrate the moderates are not sold on the withdrawal of troops now, when Liberman wins the Seat as an Independent. So we Conservatives need to let the polls beat up the GOP. We need to draw out our enemies in the open so we actually have a target that the American citizens can actually see. Israel and Lebanon, all we saw is the women and children dying. What news failed to show was the gunman hiding behind the helpless. That is what is happening in our politics. Liberals hiding behind the "children", poor, elderly..etc. We need them to show themselves for who they are, not those who they are using to achieve their goals.

For those who say they will vote Democrat cause of their disgust of the GOP. I assure you, I am in the crowd of looking at the parallels of ROME, the invasion of the poor in the world, and our inability to destroy an enemy before they destroy us. I am extremely upset with the corrupt GOP. When did the Government turn against the people?
As demonstrated by Israel withdrawel and apeasement to Hitler. Land for peace or apeasement for peace does not work. Think of this, if the Democrats control congress they will control what is voted on. We will never have the chance for a tax cut ever again, even if the majority of congress would vote for it. The media and congress will put pieces in the bill that will ensure that a Republican will have to vote for it despite what the bill will acomplished, or face the onsault of bad press for not voting for the "children"...etc. President doesn't write bills, only signs and vetos. The real power of direction in this country is Congress. Think about what the Democrats want for this country. And remember they only state what they think what the voters will accept, not what the really want.
Do you really want to repeat failure as proven by history? It took 200 years for the Liberals to come out of the closet. It is going to take the blogs, foxnews, Conservatives, more then a few terms to get rid of the Liberal monopoly out of education, activist judges, media and to get the Liberals out of the Repulican party. Infact it will likely to take a least a generation. We are the first generation to be exposed to the fact there is such a thing as RINOs. Educate your kids and know their future is in their hands.

Better 'Red' than dead, eh?
Folks, it comes down to this. Being against something is not enough for anything but those on the fringe and whom in the long run are irrelevant.
Republicans may be divided on some issues such and federal spending, illegal immigration and attempts at partisanship with the likes of Kennedy and Reid but one thing they are united on is not having a Speaker Pelosi or President Clinton.
Regarding local elections, the Democrats are completely feckless with ideas. In the final voting it will be some who hold their nose and vote Republican whether or not their candidate is a Rhino.
Take heart, it ain't as bad as the Dems and MSM would want you to believe. They also want you to feel hopeless such that you will stay home election day. Are you going to do so and hand them this election cycle? Didn't think so.
