Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

Thank you very much. Charles Moore, Anthony Browne, Dean Godson, distinguished guests: I appreciate the cordial welcome to London. I always look forward to visiting the United Kingdom, and this time around I couldn’t ask for a better host than the Policy Exchange.

We have a few policies back home that we’d like to exchange, and think tanks like this are the place to come. After just five years, the Policy Exchange ranks among the best, and the fine reputation of your work has reached Washington as well. I congratulate all of you, and I thank you for the hospitality.

Your kind invitation brings me here just as Great Britain prepares to greet an incoming prime minister.

Back in the U.S., we’re able to watch the House of Commons’ “Prime Minister’s Question Time,” which Mr. Brown will now endure. I’ve thought that America needed a weekly question and answer period between the President and Congress. But in the past few months I’ve decided it isn’t such a good idea.

Your system also allows a change in the head of government at a moment's notice. Even your general election campaigns are mercifully brief.

Of course we believe in long presidential campaigns in the U.S. Most American politicians are afraid they won’t be considered serious candidates until they’ve made a promise a hundred times and spent a hundred million dollars. Though every now and then you still get some slow-poke who takes his time before announcing.

I congratulate Mr. Brown, and I wish him well as the 53rd prime minister of the United Kingdom. And if you’ll allow me a word about the 52nd … we’ll miss him. There are disputes of party here that are strictly British affairs. But sometimes the better points of statesmen possibly are seen more clearly at a distance.

We are profoundly grateful for the friendship of the British people, and in America we’ll always remember Mr. Blair as a gallant friend, even when it did him no good politically.

When we in the States take the measure of your leaders, their party affiliation doesn’t really count for a whole lot. It’s been this way for a while now, at every moment when it mattered. It was true in the days of Churchill and Roosevelt … of Thatcher and Reagan … and Blair and Bush.

Differences of party and domestic policy are incidental, compared to the bigger considerations that define Britain and America as allies. On both sides of the Atlantic, what matters most are the commitments we share, and the work we are called to do in common. This work is based upon the principles we hold – primarily, the right of free people to govern themselves. We also believe that the rule of law, market economies, property rights, and trade with other nations are the underpinnings of a free society.

When historians of the modern era speak of the great democracies, of civilization and its defenders, that’s us they’re talking about – we and our democratic friends across Europe and beyond.

In the long progress of the world toward liberty, it was not by chance that this lowly province of the Roman Empire became a great teacher of democracy and the model of self-government. And it wasn’t just luck that turned a troublesome British colony into the inspiration for all those who seek freedom. There is a reason why Britain and America were thrown together as partners in this world. The things that unite the American and British peoples? They don’t change with the names of leaders or with the passing of years.

It was Harold MacMillan who best summed up the shared experiences of British and American leaders in the last century. In his later years, Lord Stockton was asked what he considered the greatest challenge in all his years as a statesman. And in that English way, he put it in a word: “Events, my dear boy, events.”

Events often have a way of intruding upon the plans of free people. As a rule, people in democratic societies prefer to take care of the business of life. They raise families. They work and they trade. They create wealth and they share it. Above all in free societies, we live by the law – and, at our best, we look after one another, too. Yet in every generation, “events” can be counted on to change the plan, sometimes in tragic ways.

Often the cause of our grief is a misplaced trust in the good intentions of others. In our dealings with other nations, people in free countries are not the type to go looking for trouble. We tend to extend our good will to other nations, assuming that it will be returned in kind. No matter how clear the signals, sometimes in history even the best of men failed to act in time to prevent the worst from happening.

The United States and the United Kingdom have learned this lesson both ways – in great evils ignored, and in great evils averted. We learned it from a World War that happened and, in the decades afterward, from the World War that didn’t happen.

We must conclude that the greatest test of leadership – in your country or mine, in this time or any other – can be simply stated. We must shape events, and not be left at their mercy. And in all things, to protect ourselves and to assure the peace, the great democracies of the world must stick together. We must be willing to make tough decisions today in order to avert bigger problems tomorrow. We must be prepared to meet threats before threats become tragedies.

These are not considerations relevant only to the people of Great Britain and the United States. The relationship between the United States and all of Europe is valued by both sides and has benefited the world. NATO has not only been an effective tool for our efforts, it symbolizes our commonality.

Changes in leadership on both sides of the Atlantic will give us new opportunities. Often in the history of nations, leaders rise to meet the times. These times require those with the wisdom and courage to see past the next election cycle.

The United States and our European allies must begin to forge a new understanding that matches the times we live in. This must be an understanding based upon candor if we are to come closer to agreement as to the nature of the challenges we face.

I have great hope for such a new understanding among NATO allies. We would never want to look back on a campaign we’d undertaken to realize we’d fallen short for lack of commitment or material support. Today our enemies do not doubt our military strength. They do question our determination. Our efforts will require ongoing dialogue based upon mutual respect and mutual interests.

For many Americans, there is a concern that even among our friends, some people are instinctively uncomfortable with U.S. power. Some on the Continent speak of the need for Europe to balance U.S. influence. Americans worry that this sentiment could, over time, lead to an uncoupling of the alliance. And if constraining U.S. power is that important, would our European friends be comfortable with other powers serving as a counterweight to the United States?

Some who seek to check U.S. power believe that legitimacy may only be conferred by international consensus as represented by the UN Security Council. They ask, “If a country can invade another nation for its own good reasons, what is the logical stopping point?”

The American response is to ask how, then, does one justify non-Security-Council-sanctioned actions, such as Kosovo? What are nations allowed to do when the UN cannot muster the political will to act? How many countries must be involved in an action before legitimacy is conferred? Is it just European countries that count? And, how do we deal with problems in concert when many of us don’t agree on the extent or nature of the problem?

For our part, we in the United States must make a better case for our views and our actions. It is possible that things that are perfectly obvious to us may not be so obvious even to those who wish us well. We must be willing to listen and we must be willing to share our intelligence to the maximum extent appropriate.

We must be prepared to make our case not just privately, but to the people of Europe and the world in order to build political support for cooperation. The world is not stronger if America is weaker – or is perceived to be weaker. The same is true of Britain and truer still of our NATO alliance. And we must be capable of making that case.

In return, it is fair to expect that our allies will not put their trade and commercial interests above world security. It is also fair to ask that Europeans consider the consequences if they are wrong about the threat to the Western world.

Many in Europe simply have a different view from that of the United States as to the threat of radical Islamic fundamentalism. They think that the threat is overblown. That despite September 11th, and July 7th and other attacks in Europe and elsewhere, America is the main target and therefore the problem is basically an American one. The fact that no weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq at a particular point in time resolves the matter for them. Also, they see no meaningful connection between terrorist groups and countries like Iran.

Admittedly, even some in America think that the threat is overblown, and that if we had not gone into Iraq, we’d have no terrorism problem.

However, most Americans feel differently. We understand that the Western world is in an international struggle with jihadists who see this struggle as part of a conflict that has gone on for centuries, and who won’t give up until Western countries are brought to their knees. I agree with this view. I believe that the forces of civilization must work together with common purpose to defeat the terrorists who for their own twisted purposes have murdered thousands, and who are trying to acquire technology to murder millions more.

When terrorists in their video performances pledge more and bigger attacks to come, against targets in both Europe and America, these are not to be shrugged off as idle boasts. They must be taken at their word.

When the president of Iran shares his nightmare visions before cheering crowds, those are not just the fanatic’s version of an empty applause line. The only safe assumption is that he means it. If we know anything from modern history, it is that when fanatical tyrants pledge to “wipe out” an entire nation, we should listen. We must gather our alliance, and do all in our power to make sure that such men do not gain the capability to carry out their evil ambitions.

Of course, diplomacy is always to be preferred in our dealings with dangerous regimes. But I believe diplomacy, as Franklin Roosevelt put it, is more than “note writing.” The words of our leaders command much closer attention from adversaries when it is understood that we and our allies are prepared to use force when force is necessary.

The campaign in Afghanistan is a prime example of this, both as a largely successful effort against a terrorist state and as a logical extension of the mission of NATO, which now reaches far beyond the boundaries of Europe.

As in Iraq, the effort has involved great sacrifice from the brave sons and daughters of Britain. By their valor, and by the sustained action of NATO in Afghanistan, we have shown our seriousness of purpose against terrorism … an ability to move beyond the military models of Cold War days … and a capacity to shift tactics and technology to fight an enemy who defends no state and observes no code.

Even in the midst of all the divisiveness with regard to our actions in Iraq, the United States, Great Britain and our coalition should be proud of what we have averted. Imagine Saddam Hussein and his murderous sons in power today successfully defying the international community and free to pursue weapons programs.

Of course political realism is back in the ascendancy since the difficulties in Iraq. It’s true that we have learned that geography, history, and ethnicity are important factors to consider in making decisions regarding today’s enemies.

We’ve also been reminded of the importance of preparation, of alliances, and the continuing support of our people.

But that does not change the fact that we sometimes must address events in far-away places that endanger our people. Or that we believe in universal values that do not allow us to ignore wholesale human suffering.

Realism? Yes. But also idealism, which is what makes us different from our enemies.

We should also remember that beyond the War on Terror, there are other threats we must meet together that extend well into the future. One way or another, the challenges we face today will recede. Other challenges to our shared interests and security have not been waiting patiently in line for our attention.

Some cannot yet be seen, but it is obvious that our energy needs for example are not going away. Disruptions in energy supplies, sharp price increases and thuggish behavior by energy suppliers are threats to all democracies with growing economies. Also, rapid military build-ups by non-democratic nations should be of concern.

More and more, if things go wrong in disputes that were once considered just regional problems, there will be no “over there” or “over here.” We’ll all be affected. Globalization is not limited to economic matters. As we go through these perilous times, we must keep firmly in mind the things that bind us together, not disagreements.

We’ve been through a lot together, our two nations – and not just in the storied exploits of our parents’ generation. Though there are many moments in British political history from which leaders today can take instruction, there is one in particular that I’ve always admired in the career of Sir Winston Churchill.

It was when Neville Chamberlain died in November 1940. In memorializing in the House of Commons his longtime adversary, Churchill pronounced the bitter controversies put to rest. He said, quote, “History with its flickering lamp stumbles along the trail of the past, trying to reconstruct its scenes, to revive its echoes, and kindle with pale gleams the passion of former days.”

In the end, he reflected, “The only guide to a man is his conscience; the only shield to his memory is the rectitude and sincerity of his actions.” We are “so often mocked by the failure of our hopes and the upsetting of our calculations; but with this shield, however the fates may play, we march always in the ranks of honour.”

Maybe it’s the actor in me that admires this scene so much. It’s a moment that no script-writer could improve upon. I am struck by its spirit, the magnanimity and generosity of the man … the willingness to let old arguments go, and move on to great objectives held in common.

We in this alliance have had our own share of hopes mocked and plans upset. And now it is time to shake off the disappointments, to let go of controversies past, and to press on together toward the great objectives. To ensure security for our people. To be a force for stability in the world. To remain the stalwart friends of freedom.

For our part, we in the United States have never had occasion to doubt the fortitude and faithfulness of the British people. As much as ever, we count ourselves lucky to call the United Kingdom our closest ally, and we are proud to call you our finest friend.

Thank you.

meant I oppose his position on Iraq (Paul's),
He's correct regarding the U.N.

I'm a Mass Native Hank
I had the smarts to "cut and run" from my native state 40 yrs. ago, leaving my "pubbie" family behind (married my sailor fr. the midwest), my sis and family would gladly leave but for his elderly folks. Having said that..my once proud
New England state sold out to the liberal,

remembering it was there the 'shot heard round the world" was fired. Incidentally, when are all the legislators on the take gonna fix the roads?
I do have my sticker pass on my car to get me through the tunnel - under the canal when I go home which isn't often.

However, I'm also one who can't vote for Paul,
not that I don't appreciate is position on many issues (except the Iraq battle, I opponse the hamhanded restrictions on our troops and the p.c.
court martials. If ya gonna go into battle,
battle to win, not to be p.c.) I don't believe
the American people are ready for it, nor having been dumbed down by 40 yrs. of NEA propaganda/antiAmericanism/Founders were racists etc they can even understand what our foundations

the "second tier" candidates, esp. the John Wayne
of the group, Duncan Hunter..says what he means and means what he says. But I'm reserving my judgement til later, and I want to hear more from Fred.

A Thompson-Cheney Alliance?
Just now when googling another matter I came across an interesting bit of gossip I had not heard. Vice-President Cheney's daughter Elizabeth, who resigned her State Department Job in 2006, signed on this month (June 2007) to work for Fred Thompson.

Solid
I had a few moments with this piece and it sits very well with me. There is no better way to attack the haters of freedom than to ally with Britain and the rest of the English speaking world - united we stand and divided we fall. This terror phenomenon is neither isolated to any region of the world nor in any country. The surreptitious encroachment of these ethno-religious hatemongers called Arab Muslims and others devoted to the teachings of the false prophet Mohammad are everywhere consuming liberty and emitting treachery. We cannot back down to these thugs. The critics of this piece have never lived through oppressive circumstances nor have they been intimidated by bullies (at school or otherwise). If they had, it would be clear that appeasement never mollifies tyrants and that bold and decisive leadership is the only way to perpetuate freedom. Fred will stand on his word and protect America’s interests I am confident from what he has already written.

Paraaaaade, - - Rest.
I am still on the wait and see list as regards Thompson. I have to have more info, good or bad.

Obviously if it's him or some dimmcrat, I might have to give up my druthers. It least we could go down the tubes with a little more glory even if that stinks.

How many of you are asking why there are so many highly placed pols and CEOs trying to change the world.??. Do they know something we don't or are they just power hungry. The way I read history, if they get power, it will just be a matter of time before they are toppled by the ignorant masses. Or is this electronic world, now one where they can keep us under control.??.

They might want to implant tracking devices in the general population eventually, but how do you pull that off with Arabs and others. Might have to become a Moslem just to fight some thick headed ba$tard$. God forbid.

Check out Mike Huckabee,
a solid conservative with conservative positions on all important issues. Also, has been a chief executive of a state for 11 years. In my opinion, Huckabee has less downside and less question marks related to his past than Thompson.
There has been upward movement in the polls also.

Ron Paul
is an idiot that doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of being elected. He may even managed to alienate his base so good luck keeping your congressional seat. Get over this idiot and get serious about finding a candidate that doesn't expound socialism or want to move us backward in time. And no, Joe Olivo, you aren't it either.

VERY PRESIDENTIAL! VERY REAGANESQUE! I love the overt references to the Oil For food Scam! You have intellect and you know how to get people's attention! GO FRED! My checkbook is waiting your announcement.

Great speech Fred! Sunthe1,
The difference between Fred and Obama worship is that Fred has actually stated clearly what he thinks about many subjects and Obama has said nothing but greeting card statements that sound good but have no substance.

And to those who think Australia was snubbed, Australia is part of the UK and still consider the Queen of England their monarch.

FRED, TELL US THE TRUTH - NOW ! ! !
Majority of Americans do not know about NA Union - in 2010, just 3 years from now - new currency for mex, US, Kanada - called AMERO;

NO SOUTHERN BORDER EVER,
ETC.
They do not know that mexes will have to work ONLY 18 months to get on U.S. Social Security rolls, but Americans have to work 120 (10 years)
months to earn it, and so on....
Check Eagle Forum of Phillis Schlafly ...or

Then sit down and cry..... :(

Apropos of another era
I agree with SunThe1: Fred's speechwriters ARE better than his column writers.

However, in reading the speech I was somewhat puzzled by its tone, which seemed to assume that Britain is other than the highly socialized state that it is today. In speaking of “the work we are called to do in common”, Fred cites our mutual belief that “the rule of law, market economies, property rights, and trade with other nations are the underpinnings of a free society.”

This was undoubtedly true in the heyday of western civilization, but the beliefs that Fred iterates are no longer held as the basis of public policy in Britain and are being rapidly undermined by socialist forces as the basis of public policy in the United States.

Though I agree completely with his analysis of the threat posed by radical Islamic fundamentalism, he seems to ignore the fact that the groups espousing this are actually enabled by the socialistic tide that’s already overwhelmed Britain and threatens to engulf us as well. Socialism is no match for terrorism.

lokie
Cynical? Maybe. I prefer to think of it as healthy skepticism. I assure you I'll give Fred a fair hearing; I just don't jump on the bandwagon of the rockstars... I see alot of he's--our-savior behavior...kinda like the Obama worshipers on the left. That kind of over-emotional reaction to someone who's basically not shown much yet--well, yes, it makes me skeptical. We'll see how he does.

Why yes, much better for Fred to thumb his nose at the Brits, and tell Tony Blair to screw off. "F**k alla y'all" works SO well in international circles.

Given how hated Blair is in the UK and in Europe it would win Fred instant kudos if he did that. It is a longstanding US foreign policy mistake to support those who don't share your views (or in Blair's case actively espouse socialism notwithstanding his stance on the WoT) for momentary convenience. The UK needs better friends in the US who will tell it like it is, rather than pander to the socialists of the Labour Party just because we send our troops to fight alongside yours. There is no point accepting UK help to keep the world free if you accept it from those who make the UK itself unfree.

Uh
Fred,

Persevere. And while you are at the task, please spend a few moments working on eliminating the "uh's" in your contemporaneous speaking. These frequent little interrupts seriously detract from the message. You can do this.

And those who see boogeymen.......
Come on now folks, when are you going to stop the hyperbole, and point out facts with verifyable references instead of the hit and run conspiratorial jabs thrown out willy nilly?
Who do you support? A DemocRat, or one of the lesser knowns, or even Rudy Mc Romney?

Doing hit pieces like has bee done in here are diminishing any ounce of credibility that you hope to accomplish. It's time to face facts and either grow up, or get out.

And do you know the difference between Rudy and Hillary? Only the size of the dress.....

It's what Fred Did
He went to the heart of our Key ally, honoring The Lady of all Ladies and the ally of all allies.

Have you noticed Fred takes giant steps while others tippy-toe behind, buried in burocratic tradition.

He said good stuff. Impressed and made a pending business negotiation get off dead center for us. I am sure our trade relations with Britian will improve everywhere today because of the visit. The man is a hoss!

BRITISH political parties
gentlemanscholar writes: Tuesday, June, 19, 2007 2:18 PM
Thompson did make one remark, however, that struck me as somewhat naive -- or perhaps a case of wistful thinking: "When we in the States take the measure of your leaders, their party affiliation doesn’t really count for a whole lot."
=======

We in the States -- aka WE AMERICANS -- didn't much notice the difference between conservative Winston Churchill and leftist Tony Blair.

Not that Americans don't have political parties, only that Americans don't make much of the British ones...

Leadership
Fred Thompson appears, by his remarks, to be squarley where America needs a leader to be in today's difficult times. We don't need the obtuse, the innuendo and the implied with regard to our critical issues, we need simple straight forward common sense. So far Fred stands for that. That said I'd like to see a debate or two.

Ron Paul Should Be Allowed in the Iowa
Debates. If they never let Paul in the first two debates, I would have never known just how dangerous and ill-informed he is on foreign policy. So I would say, let the man speak. We need to know what a mistake he would be as our CIC.

The Coming Leader
I thought this was a great speech soon to be given by a great President. The British, Australians, Japanese, and Eastern Europeans are our top allies today. The Brits and Aussies our oldest. Fred is a no nonsense kind of guy that wants the people's work done in DC. He is my choice, you got my vote Fred! Imagine Fred against Hillary in a debate and in the election, it will be a GOP dream come true.

And please enough about unelectible Ron Paul. I would like him to meet my friend, the Ash Pile of History.

One last thing
John...do you think Bloomberg should be invited onto the stage as well? After all, he 'claimed' to be a Republican too.

Have some decorum.....
The reason for the hit pieces from the rinky dink revolutionaries are by those who are afraid of a true conservative winning the nomination. Many of these are disguising themselves as Ron Paul supporters, or the other conservative candidates.

I believe that they are either Democrats in disguise, or those of the Rudy Mc Romney faction that are on the fringe just to stir up trouble. For every hate filled bantor they post, the more they galvanize a lot of people to do just the opposite they are trying to accomplish.

You know all you FDT haters, there is a place for you. Socialist blogs such as the Huffington Post, Salon.com, DailyKos, and others fit right, oh I mean LEFT of your agenda.

If you want to state facts, show us proof, where we can research the material for ourselves, and who wrote the articles. Don't just come in with hit pieces, attacks, and innuendos. Back up your statements!

Unless you want to be taken down to the carpet, you better pick your battles wisely.....

Without appologies........

Why yes, much better for Fred to thumb his nose at the Brits, and tell Tony Blair to screw off. "F**k alla y'all" works SO well in international circles.

This is why the Ron Paul circle can't be trusted with power any more than the Leftists can; in their case because they have no clue what a moderate, diplomatic approach to ANYTHING is, much less foreign policy.

If you think Blair is
bad, just wait for Brown, he has annoucned plans to intern people for ninety days without charge or trial and for questioning suspects after charge. Even under 28 day custody they have arrested 70 year old members of the socialist Labour party for shouting "Rubbish" at our current socialsist PM. Last time I saw those sort of laws they were in National Socialist Germany or Soviet Russia. God help us. We may need the Marines to effect regime change here someday soon.

Shame on Fred
A RINO who is given to supporting socialist authoritarians like Tony Blair has no place as a contestant for leader of the free world on behalf of a true conservative party. God help us if the American public are misguided enough to support a fellow traveller of socialists who poison our democracy in the UK.

Is he aware that Tony Blair's wife has openely announced her support and sympathy for Arab Muslim suicide bombers who target Jews in Israel? Is he aware that Tony Blair has sold the highest honours (knighthoods and peerages) that Britain can offer at US$4m a time? Is he aware that Tony Blair gave a knighthood to an Islamic fascist called Iqbal Sacranie whose claim to fame is burning books critical of the religion of blowing things to pieces? Is he aware that Tony Blair has raised taxes as a proportion of GDP to a mind blowing 43%? Is he aware that Tony Blair has sacrificed the majority of Britain's powers to legislate to unelected socialists in Brussels? Is he aware that Tony Blair has run down our military until we are barely able to defend ourseves (ask any US serviceperson about our troops and why they are called the borrowers - most of them who are wearing body armour are wearing US body armour considered too old to be worth wearing)? Is he aware that Tony Blair has stripped of us of our rights to bear arms, freedom of speech, habeas corpus and due process? Is he aware that Tony Blair wants to introduce identity cards and in car tracking devices to control law abiding British subjects? Is he aware that Tony Blair openly supports racist policies of affirmative action and endorses a Labour Mayor of London who is openly anti semitic and hugs holocaust deniers (this Monday the same mayor refused a gay man and a war veteran places on the fire authority for London because they are white male conservatives)? Is he aware that Tony Blair has taken no action against the Muslim hate preachers who congregate in London? Is he aware that Tony Blair practises the open border illegal immgrant free for all that Bush only dreams about? Is he aware that socialised medicine in Britain has given us healthcare rationing and MRSA?

Good god, living in the benighited socialist hellhole that Britain has become we look to the US to offer us leadership, not sickening sychophancy. Fred can take a run off a high cliff into a deep lake with socialist sympathies like that.

Save the free world from this ignoramous before it is too late.

Excellent work, President Thompson!
Great column. Now for a few words.....

To all of my conservative, libertarian, and libertarian conservative friends, the attacks that we throw at one another are only dividing us further. Our main focus should be to unite to stop the socialists/communists/marxists from destroying the fabric of our beloved nation. I hope to this point, we all can agree with that.

I see the Democratic ticket, and the Bloomberg candidacy a danger to each and every one of our individual liberties. Those who have money, want power. Greed comes with power, and with power comes corruption.

I love what Dr. Ron Paul stands for other than his stance on the War on Terror. I love Governor Mike Huckabee, Representatives Tom Tancredo, and Duncan Hunter too. But what we all need is to stop the divisive backstabbing, and sabotaging of each others websites and blogs. It's time to grow up. As many of you may have read of some of my blogwork, I am supporting Fred Thompson. Some ask why a libertarian conservative like myself would do such a thing.

Yes, I am against what McCain-Feingold Amendment did to our freedom speech, and FDT voted for it. Of course, FDT voted for some things I disagreed with him on. But looking at the bigger picture, we need to unite behind someone who can unite, not divide. Reagan was probably the best President in my lifetime, but he wasn't perfect.

To all my friends in the Paul, Tancredo, Huckabee, Hunter camps, you can support them all you want, but you still have to display the positives of your candidate, and explain logically why you may disagree with others without vitriolic attacks and hyperbole.

I have made my stances very clear why I will not support a McCain, Giuliani, or Romney candidacy.
I am pro gun, pro life, pro family, and pro strong borders. And I will not change my mind on that.

So please, be at least respectful. We have a serious job ahead of us. United we stand against socialism, or divided we are subjegated in tyranny.......

GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Without appologies.......

Could be. I'm not worried; the nice thing about having delusional folks gunning for you is that they can't aim worth a dammn, what with all the hallucinations getting in the way. Kinda like drunks with the DTs, you know?

Konop already threw his "Neocon" label at me; I figure I'm through the worst of it.

Nice speech
His speechwriter is hands-down better than his column writer.

Standing Up
I think this is an excellent policy speech hitting the right points throughout. Fred's not an elected official, nor is he an announced candidate, so his speech is background and purposely without specific suggestions. It's another chance to understand how he thinks.

The few posters who disagree with him, and spout nonsense, should simply stop reading his comments as posted at TH. If you dislike him, stop reading him. That's not difficult to understand, is it?

Yes, I'm a bit apprehensive waiting for his announcement, but I'm going to be patient. I can't see his wasting money and time trying to answer all the current nonsense coming from the left. The second tier Republican candidates are there for a reason, and I wish you clowns who continue to criticize Fred and extol the thinking of Ron Paul, Duncan Hunter, and Tom Tancredo, would put a cork in it. It serves no useful purpose anymore.

Our Country is the strongest in the World, and it must remain so to put a roadblock in the path of still dangerous Communism [check out the economic rise of China and Russia with it's return to the Cold War mentality], and the Islamic Fundamentalist hordes out to conquer the World. Who would you rather have in the forefront, stabilizing what can be stabilized to prevent their aggression? No other Country has the wherewithall, and many of our fellow citizens need to get over their isolationist, socialist, and defeatist attitudes to permit us to properly protect our freedom, culture, and society. Do you expect us to simply sit back idly and then step in and save Europe again when the hordes arrive overwhelmingly? It might be too little too late, and we won't be able to do it if you leftists have your way in America. Where will the desire to protect our children from real danger come from?

In the leftist World, too much energy is spent trying to protect everything from anything---whether a danger is real or important in the scheme of things or not---and I tend to doubt there'll be much energy left to oppose real and true dangers. There certainly won't be the intelligence and Democrat politicians necessary to protect us. Teddy simply can't swim away and hide the truth about these problems.

The time has come for a different, positive and clear thinking candidate with backbone about his principles to lead us. As has been said before, the times dictate the needs. We can't afford to have the Democrats grab the White House. A great depression of mind and economy may be the result. Positive defeats negative, except in electricity.

Fergus: Uh oh, kiss of death!!!

"Here's why FDT is the superior candidate: HE ACTUALLY STANDS A CHANCE OF BEING BOTH NOMINATED AND ELECTED."

You DO realize, don't you, that yet again your post puts you in the same camp as me... and that means those ronpaul fanatics are going to come after you like you were on the 10 Most Wanted list? LOL

Obviously, there aren't that many Leftist-in-Ron-Paul-supporter's-clothing, blabbing about great Ron Paul folks, but they are rabid! :-)

"Yawn." Actually, it's not really "yawn" but rather the ronpaul fanatics will attack you before "dawn." LOL

But you're right! Fred IS the man who will most likely keep a Republican in the WH. Yeeeesssss!

Sorry Gunlock
You don't get off that easy. You can comment on how old someone looks when they're 21. Take it in context and move on to comments on his qualifications, or lack thereof, whatever your opinion might be.

Some here have criticized

. . . Mr. Thompson's speech for lack of concreteness -- after all is said, what will he actually DO?

I didn't read his speech as an action plan.

But here's the concreteness I saw in it:

I read it as an opportunity for him to allow our U.K. allies "to take the measure of the man."

I read it as an opportunity for him to nurture one of our greatest allies.

I read it as an opportunity for him to display to us and to the world what are those overarching characteristics that define his thinking as it relates to America's character, her place in the world and her objectives.

In that regard I think he succeeded admirably.

We need to hear more from him before jumping on the bandwagon.

However, this voter at least, will NOT be voting for Mitt, John, or Rudy -- I can guaran - dam(n) - tee you that!

FergusMacLennan
NEOCONS LIKE YOU ARE NOT CONSERVATIVE! YOU ARE JUST A HIILARY WANT TO BE!!!!

orlandocajun
You said "I wish people would stop commenting on how old he looks."

I guess you answered my question.

Ron Paul? "Oh brother" ^10
Here's why FDT is the superior candidate: HE ACTUALLY STANDS A CHANCE OF BEING BOTH NOMINATED AND ELECTED.

So we have yet another Leftist-in-Ron-Paul-supporter's-clothing, blabbing about great Ron Paul.

Yawn.

Just out!
Fred Thompson is now the top choice for the GOP nomination in the pols. And he has still yet to announce he's running. This says a lot about what the American people are demanding in a leader.

We no longer are accepting the highly polished clones that have fooled us in the past. With their millions of dollars spent on campaigns. The phony images created by their handlers. Is not working this time. I believe Americans have finely seen the for what they are.

Who was it that Fred didn't stand a chance because he couldn't raise enough money? Who needs money when you have character, common sense, and a true desire to do what is right for America.

Fred is THE man!

Stix
I've read the words of the speech a couple of times and the only concrete point I come away with is centered around support for decisions made with respect to Iraq. I thought the other parts of the speech were platitudinous and banal.

What is it about FDT's speech that gets you so pumped?

Orlandocajun
Not the typical "we surrender" canard, OC. I expect the dialogue on TH to be a little more thoughtful than a tired, and meaningless slogan. Wait, you support GWB and the Iraq fiasco? That explains your brainless response.

Just great...
You've got Joeolivaforpresident (who stands a better chance at getting elected dog catcher) and Hank from Mass knocking FDT. Hank, from the same state (commonwealth - yeah, right) that keeps sending dopes like Ted ("I never met an illegal immigrant I didn't like or wouldn't hire - I thought she could swim - give me another shot of Corvoisier - windmills? here?") Kennedy and John ("I was for keeping my medals/the war before I was against keeping my medals/the war - hey, isn't that Jane Fonda hot? Teresa reminds me of her - Quick, shoot me in the butt so I can get another purple heart") Kerry to Washington.

This was simply an awesome speech. Pure and simple. Read the words, close your eyes and think about what he is saying. I'm becoming more and more of a Fred fan everyday.

Stix

LOL Orlando
Perfect response to those members of the Neville Chamberlain Society!

Joe and Hank
The only speech that you want to hear is "we surrender". Go back to the Huffington Post and surrender there.

So Now...
I must copy my stuff and try over and over to get the writ placed. Sad.

FDT and Gunlock
I writ a very good piece and TH does not place it in the blog. WTH is with this?

Hey FDT
yawn!!!

This man has NO vision of what to do in the Middle East. The Iraq war has made us and our position weaker in the world, and not just because it was lead by bungling and incompetent fools, but because the decision to invade was exactly the wrong response to the wrong enemy for the wrong problem. Blair onlyUnless and until FDT and the other Reupublicans recognize this, they cannot and should not be supported by any patriotic American.

RUDY FORCED OFF IRAQ STUDY GROUP

Giuliani was forced off the Iraq Study Group…

…for missing every single meeting. He was too busy racking up speaking fees to serve his country on an issue he claims is of enormous importance. His position on Iraq is unsurprisingly bankrupt and appeals only to the Republican base’s least rational, warmongering faction.

Newsday: Rudolph Giuliani’s membership on an elite Iraq study panel came to an abrupt end last spring after he failed to show up for a single official meeting of the group, causing the panel’s top Republican to give him a stark choice: either attend the meetings or quit, several sources said.

Giuliani left the Iraq Study Group last May after just two months, walking away from a chance to make up for his lack of foreign policy credentials on the top issue in the 2008 race, the Iraq war.

He cited “previous time commitments” in a letter explaining his decision to quit, and a look at his schedule suggests why — the sessions at times conflicted with Giuliani’s lucrative speaking tour that garnered him $11.4 million in 14 months.

Giuliani’s campaign said that the former New York mayor did participate in Iraq Study Group

Great words of a democracies duty.
Mr. Thomson has it perfectly in his grasp. The duty of democratic nations to work as one in fighting terror.Individual democracies, putting up a bulwark,to prevent actions that could terrorize its society. In addition to that, these same democracies, united has one, reinforcing that bulwark.A combined means of protection, and assistance, when societies are faced with terror. A combined embrace of reality that, unseen actions of terror lurk around every corner. It can range from a devastating disaster,to a radical terrorist group, country. These democracies are compelled to act united, before, during, and after the fact.Just as these democracies, are compelled to act individually,to limit, and prevent, ideals of terror to grow at home. In that way there will be no hesitation among the democracies when called to action. Individuals,in each democracy, who have fought against intimidation, and coercion by terror, united behind their nation. Lifes terror comes in many forms, and nations that have recognized this have become democracies. Responsibly preventing, its society from acts of terror. Responsibly assisting to overcome that which terrorizes.

Just what I wanted to hear
What I like most about Fred is that he's not afraid to say what he thinks, and most importantly, what is right. If people want to hold Reagan as the model for this type of leadership, and I for one do, then there's no other waiting in line to lead the U.S. who does it better than Fred. I can see Hunter and Huckabee with the same ideology, but I can't see them articulating those thoughts the way Fred did.

By the way, ditto on the English. They and the Aussies are the only ones we can absolutely count on in crunch time and I too consider them our dearest friends.

Finally, Fred is 64 years old I believe. I wish people would stop commenting on how old he looks. I would say that the man has wisdom beyond his years. Bill Clinton looked young. Where did that get us?

Great Speech
Fred has that way of making his point that will help in the understanding of what America is up to. Contrast this to what the Democrats offer, higher taxes, socialism and gun control.

I will take the vision, RUN FRED RUN!!!!

minor quibble
In this speech Thompson shows that he clearly understands what the war on the jihadists is all about, and he does an excellent job of delineating the responsibilities of both the U.S. and Europe for successfully executing this war.

Thompson did make one remark, however, that struck me as somewhat naive -- or perhaps a case of wistful thinking: "When we in the States take the measure of your leaders, their party affiliation doesn’t really count for a whole lot."

Perhaps that was at one time the case, but our current political culture is so polarized now that even with a moderate Republican in the White House, they cannot manage to say anything kind about him, even when he is essentially propounding policies with which they had agreed historically (neo-Wilsonian spread of democracy, nation-building, big government programs in education and Medicare entitlements, etc.) I do not doubt that Bush is sincere (sincerely wrong) on these matters, but the fact that he is so reviled by the left and the MSMers shows me that there is no point whatsoever in ever compromising with them just for the sake of bi-partisan comity or legacy.

I realize that Thompson's remark was probably in reference how we take the measure of our leaders in the long run. I'm just not convinced that a long term vindication is possible-- especially for a Republican -- in a polarized political environment where the primary mission of one party, the Dems, along with their MSM allies, is to insure that the Republican's policies fail miserably, even if the failure comes at the cost of our national interests.

Back-bone
I think Fred Thompson has the back-bone to stand up for the United States of America, and her citizens. I don't think Fred is for a North American Union, like Jorge Bush. Fred has something, it seems most in Government are lacking....common sense. It's time to clean house in Washington, Republicans and Democrats. I AM a Fred Head...Run Fred Run!!!!

Terrorism
Mr Thompson,
I agree that Europe and a significant portion of the USA see that as either our problem or not worthy of them to address it. We can win this war ourselves but it would be easier and involve less deaths if we have partners such as Mr Blair. He is on the scale of Churchill.
It is important to act before our reaction is either too late and makes it more difficult to win the war.
Senator, we need bold and decisive leadership. I wish you luck in your bid for the White House.

the Diaries
In reading Reagan's diaries a quality continues to come forward. I don't think Reagan ran for Governor or President to stroke his ego, as do most, but because he saw no-one else out there to do the job the way it needed to be done. I'm still early in the book, but the constant fear that he could live up to the what the American people deserved and worrying about letting us down
is heart rendering.
I am beginning to see this same quality in Fred Thompson, a calling, not a dream. A necessity, not a desire.

FDT
Does he really look that old and tired? I hope that is just a bad photo.

Fred's becoming my guy.
I can almost see this speech coming from Ronald Reagan. 'nough said.

the rule of law???
We believe in the rule of law???

Of course we do!!

(except for the 20 million illegals who crossed our border and our President and Congress turning the other way...I guess those laws don't count.)

Note: Story in Atlanta from the past weekend...pregnant woman sexually assaulted by an illegal...she goes into early labor after the attack. I can't imagine how that woman and her family will forever be scarred by this event, an event that might NOT have happened if our leaders actually enforced the law.

Arrrgghhhh!!!

Great Speech
He'll do nicely.

Good speech
The best yet.I like this man more every day.I also agree with FOWG that Australia should be included. They're not often mentioned in the media but they've always stood by us when things got tough.Run Fred....

These Words Need Constant Repeating
in the halls of the Senate, House, UN and DNC headquarters.

"Of course, diplomacy is always to be preferred in our dealings with dangerous regimes. But I believe diplomacy, as Franklin Roosevelt put it, is more than “note writing.” The words of our leaders command much closer attention from adversaries when it is understood that we and our allies are prepared to use force when force is necessary."

Fred most certainly gets it.

History
FDT seems to have learned something from history both recent and ancient.

RUN FRED, RUN!!!

The world
As the British would say, "HEER HEER".

Like it or not, the dirty work of defending liberty traditionally falls to the English speaking people.

I am a little disappointed that Fred failed to mention our greatest ally, Australia, in his speech. I am sorry to say that I do not know where Canada is at this time.

Overall an excellent speech which includes naming the real enemy.

HEER HEER!!!

Hey Fred
You'll make an excellent President.
