Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

No, I didn’t write that headline just to get you to click through to my column. All right, maybe I did a little, but there really is no better way to describe it.

Over the past couple weeks, there have been a couple stories floating around that just warmed my little heart, but they didn’t get a lot of attention, so I have decided to give them plenty. Do you wonder what kind of story it takes to warm my cold, conservative heart? Well, wonder no longer.

This is the kind of headline I’m talking about.

Woman Kills Intruder With Bare Hands

Come on, you know you got goosebumps. How I do love to see the fairer sex meting out justice. When called upon, this 51-year-old nurse’s hands went from mothering to manslaughter in seconds flat:

A nurse returning from work discovered an intruder armed with a hammer in her home and strangled him with her bare hands, police said.

Susan Kuhnhausen, 51, ran to a neighbor's house after the confrontation Wednesday night. Police found the body of Edward Dalton Haffey, 59, a convicted felon with a long police record.

Wow.

Of course, not all women are lucky enough to outweigh their attackers, as Kuhnhausen did, so they have to resort to other methods, like persistence.

Butt-Kicking Granny Turns Tables on Purse-Snatcher

Seventy-five-year-old Betty Horton had her purse snatched, but was having none of that. She chased the robber down and retrieved the purse with sheer determination and the threat of a gun.

"I was huffin' and puffin' by the time I got around the corner, but I didn't care," Horton said…

Horton found the man and told him to drop the bag.

"Because if you don't, and I get a hold of it and there's a gun in there, I'll shoot your ear off or I'll take your toe, because you're not going to take my purse away from me," she told him.

Unforgettable.

Those two stories were so fun, I decided to look around for others.

Vivian Deen saved her grocery store, and perhaps her husband’s life this week, when she opened up fire on a would-be robber:

William Deen, 60, was on the telephone about 10 a.m. when he said the man came in with a stocking over his face. He was dressed in black.

"He kind of eased in, and when I looked up, he said, 'This is a stickup,' " Deen said. "I thought it was some kind of joke, but then he put a gun in my face."

Deen said the man again demanded money and tried to crawl behind the counter. The two then struggled for the gun.

"All I could see was his pistol in my face, but I wasn't giving up anything," Deen said. "I work too hard for that. He was going to have to come and take it."

Deen said he didn't want his wife to get involved.

However, Vivian Deen, 45, grabbed a handgun kept behind the counter and fired at the robber's shoulder.

"I've never even fired a gun before. But when I saw the gun pointing at my husband, I didn't waste any time," she said.

Stand by your man.

Then there’s this Texas woman, who not only carries a pistol, but is also armed with soundbites:

The man asked her, "Do you have anything good in that van?"

The woman knew she was in trouble. She told him yes and moved to the front passenger-side door.

She pulled out her pistol and heard a knife click open.

When she looked back, she saw the man was holding a knife pointed downward in his hand.

She quickly turned, pointed the gun right at him and asked, "Are you really sure you want to do whatever you're going to do?"

He took off running, the father said.

Hot.

In 2002, Charmaine Dunbar met a man on an early-morning walk, who threatened her with a rifle. She shot him twice in the stomach. It turned out he was suspected of six sexual assaults in her neighborhood and had intended her for his seventh victim.

The second time she saw the man, she was walking up Brushton Avenue around 5:35 a.m. She recognized his clothing. "Oh my God," she thought, "It's him."

She walked faster, unobtrusively getting her gun ready, but kept it under her sleeve. When they reached the top of steep Brushton Avenue, he was out of breath and stopped; she continued. She looked behind her once, and she saw him leaning over, pulling his rifle out from his pants.

Knowing she needed to fire before he was able to take aim, she steadied her gun and fired twice at his abdomen. He continued to lean over, apparently unaffected, and Dunbar thought, "Oh my God, my bullets didn't work."

Then he stood up, yelled, and fell over.

Hero.

Mom and Pop were not to be messed with in Atlanta, and 56-year-old Gloria Doster gave the reporter the quotes of a lifetime:

"I just started shooting," said Gloria Doster, 56. "I was trying to blow his brains out is what I was trying to do."

She said she tried to open the register, but one of the men told her she wasn't moving fast enough and tried to shoot her husband. He missed -- and his gun jammed.

At that point, Bobby Doster pulled out a .380-caliber handgun and shot one of the suspects. Gloria Doster then went for a 9 mm pistol she keeps near the register.

"All hell broke loose," she said. "I was trying to shoot and dial 911 at the same time."

Ruthless.

A North Carolina woman protected four lives this spring with one gun.

A pregnant woman was lying on the couch in her home when she heard the mini-blinds on her kitchen door rustle. Police say the woman, whose 1- and 3-year-old children were also in the home, got up to investigate and found a man trying to break in.

When she spotted him, he ran around the corner of the duplex to the front door and tried to kick it in. The woman warned the prowler that she had a gun. When he replied that he also had a gun, she shot at him and he returned fire. The intruder was hit in the chest and died on the way to the hospital. No one else was injured.

Maternal instinct.

This is the kind of women’s empowerment that gets me going. A new women’s studies program just doesn’t do it for me the way a gleaming .380 does.

Highlighting stories like these is the way to get people thinking of guns that way, and I’m trying to do more of it. Other sources for empowerment are the NRA Armed Citizens Database, Clayton Cramer’s Gun Self-Defense Blog, and the Women on Target program.

I’m going to stay armed with plenty of anecdotes. That way, the next time someone comes to me with an anti-gun canard, I can say, “Are you really sure you want to do whatever you're going to do?”

Hot.

Update: I've gotten a couple e-mails from readers with other good self-defense sources, such as Gun Watch and Second Amendment Sisters. Thanks, guys!

Guns are good!
Never had to use my gun in self-defense, but I am from Alabama and started shooting 22 Rifles when I was 16 years old. Have carried a gun ever since. I now live in Texas and have a Concealed Handgun Permit. I hope I never have to use it; but believe me I would if necessary. I have three guns--in different places; no one knows where; surprise!!

Great article
My husband refuses to buy a gun for safety. Good thing I don't! Got my .38 a few months ago. I'll bet he will change his mind if we ever need to use it.

Now I have to sell everything I own and move to Israel.

NY Judges
Caught you on NRANEWS.com -- Odd that they would go to NY for a negative quote. Too bad they did not see the recent headline - "New York Judges Allowed to Pack Pistols on the Bench" AP-Sunday, July 16, 2006

NEW YORK — It's one way to assure order in the court.
The New York state Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics has ruled that it is permissible for judges to pack a pistol beneath their robes while on the bench.
"From an ethical standpoint, there is no prohibition ... barring you from carrying a firearm while performing your duties on the bench," the committee said in a decision published in this week's New York Law Journal.

To aurorawatcher:

That's why I love Alaska!

Not a victim!
When I was 12, living in Fairbanks, Alaska, during the Pipeline boom, three bad guys tried to break into our house. I'd say it was broad daylight, but that latitude in January, it's dark by 5, but we were all up. My dad was north working and my tiny mother met this bozos at the door with her 357 drawn. They were big (completely filled our arctic entry, but that gun was the equalizer. They went down the street, pistol-whipped an old man (who due to a past felony in his younger years couldn't own a gun), raped his teenaged daughter and set fire to his cabin (it was about -50 degrees that fine evening). While the police and fire department were trying to control the fire, these same three men went down another block and went banging on Mrs. Mitchell's door. That fiery Irish woman with two teenage girls to defend unloaded one barrel of her double-barrell through a vent to convince these men that banging on her cabin door was going to get them killed. They disappeared into the ice fog, never to be seen or heard from again. Mom and Mrs. Mitchell together didn't weigh as much as Mr. Mayo did, but they were able to defend their families because they were armed.

Alaska has not changed its laws very much to "progress" into the 21st Century. The police are always too far away, so we're all armed and home invasion type crimes are rare. When they happen, Alaskans have shot people running AWAY from their homes after the buglary and the police have told them "Good job!" My husband sat a murder one trial a few years ago where the guy shot someone who had already shot him in a road house parking lot about 10 miles from his home. The jury unanimously voted to acquit. A later attempt to sue the former defendent resulted in the dead man's family being charged with the defendent's court costs. Alaskans just don't like people who shoot at us and we will shoot back!

In my home, Mom's 357 still lives on my closet shelf. This is assuming a burglar could get past Friday, the Lab-husky mix who couldn't care less if you take stuff from the house, but absolutely will not let anyone near her humans. My brother had her teeth to his throat one time when he miscalculated when we were returning on vacation and thought he was supposed to check the house one more time and he had been feeding her for the last two weeks, so she's serious about people defense. If they survive the alpha-dog, they get to face me. It was decided a long time ago that I'm the better shot with the hand-gun and a lot more sympathetic if it goes to trial.

By the way, someone said a small woman couldn't handle a big handgun. Wrong! My mother taught me how to shoot and neither of us stands above 5'3 or weighs more than 110. It's all in the practice and what you're used to. I'm shooting the heaviest ordinance available for the gun, so I guarantee you that they might be better off letting Friday remove their throat.

No Duty to Retreat
NRALife wrote:

Just a piece of advice from someone who knows.

NEVER EVER hunt down a "noise" in the house. Get to a defensive spot that you've already scoped out way beforehand and position yourself and listen. Your spouse should be in a backup position ready to dial 911 and watch your six.

I know someone who hunted down an intruder and was ambushed by them and almost killed.

YOUR MISSION is to protect your loved ones and ambush a/some scumbag(s) if they cross a "line in the sand" you've already established in your house. Property is replacable.

Let the cops do the hunting down, they get paid for it.

Lastly, if you DO nail them and they live, it helps a shyster sue YOU as they can point out that a bloodthirsty gun-nut hunted down their client, etc, etc.

==================================================

I must disagree. Florida and a number of other states have enacted laws that clarify the victims' duties when confronted by criminals. More and more states are moving in that direction. In Florida and those other states, the potential victim no longer has a duty to retreat.

I, for one, will investigate things that go bump in the night with weapon and flashlight in hand. I know the layout of my home; I know where it is possible for the bad guy to hide; I know when and how to "pie" corners, and when and how to make a dynamic entry. If you get ambushed by the bad guy, you haven't practiced clearing your own home enough. REFUSE TO BE A VICTIM!

All that "safe room" business is more legal CYA than tactical sense. Why barricade yourself in a room and make it easy for the burglar to rob and destroy your home? What if he's there to kill you? He now knows exactly where you are.

Put yourself in the bad guys' shoes. You have two choices. One house has a safe room where the family will retreat when you break in. The other house has a single, beautiful nymphomaniac who sleeps in the nude but will hunt you down like a rabid dog with a Remington 870 loaded with rock salt.

Take your pick.

1911
"The 1911 refers to the Colt-designed .45 military automatic pistol."
Ahh that would be a Browning designed automatic pistol.

- .380
Both. M36 is a small Smith&Wesson(S&W) revolver intended as a carry gun for plain clothes police oficers. It is a 5 shot, caliber .38 special. The 1911 refers to the Colt-designed .45 military automatic pistol. It is now made by dozens of manufacturers. It is reliable and effective, but big and heavy. Small pistols in pwerful calibers are convenient to carry, but difficult to shoot well. Hence caibers like .380 which can be handled in pocket size pistols. Most professionals moe or less agree that the .45 Auto/.357 Magnum revolver are the best compromise of effectiveness, shootability and convenience of carry. With good expanding ammo, they produce a one shot stop with a solid torso hit about 90% of the time. More power doesn't seem to raise that much. A .22 is a one shot stopper about 45% of the time, with intermediate calibers like .380 and .38 special somewhere in the middle. Professor Lott at Florida State Univ (Go 'NOles) has done a lot of research and he estimates in his book "More guns,Less crime" that civilian owned firearms are used to prevent about 2,000,000 crimes a year. This figure has been challenged, but he makes a good case. I stopped a car hijacker with my .45, a surplus Brazilian auto i bought for $24.95 in 1957. Since i didn't have to shoot, a .22 would PROBABLY have worked just as well. That big ol' .45 was quite welcome, however.

.380
Are we talking of revolvers or semi-automatics with all this advice on the guns to purchase.

Girls with guns?
Surprised nobody has mentioned the 'downside' to this article: That it's 'news'. Women defending themselves with firearms against predators should be as 'accepted' a fact of daily life as 'fender benders', and evoke as much comment.

There was once a perception in this country that those who took such 'affirmative action' against societal misfits were praiseworthy only in that they had performed a 'public service', but such was EXPECTED of 'good citizens', and not worthy of iconic status.

Obviously, that perception has changed - the predator has more 'civil rights' than the intended victim, and instances such as those cited are 'aberrations'. Those of us who agree with the actions of the women cited have an obligation to change that perception back.

Doggone it!
We finally have a topic I could have had fun with all day, and I end up working my bloody arse off, and join in probably a couple hours before the column gets yanked!

Celt: Never saw Aliens, but I thought Ripley was hot in Alien (without the "S").

Jerub: Cool Coulter link; a babe with a piece in high heels and a miniskirt. I died and went to Heaven. I could even pass up the other 71.

NRALifer: your home-defense tactics are right on the money. Secure your position, take a defensive posture, phone 911 on your cell (in case the landlines get cut), and wait it out. Tell the 911 Operator there's a good guy on premises with a weapon.

My favorite pice: my SA Black Stainless, in .45ACP, of course.

I don't have a gun in every room, but several loaded in my bedroom upstairs, and a couple stashed strategically downstairs.

Man! I missed all the fun! Bummer!

Great article
My ex-wife still has my Smith M36. It was smoothed out by Austin Beylart, an old time New Jersey gunsmith who had relocated to Bucks County, PA when I met him.

Shortly before we were married I started taking her to an indoor range I visited every weekend to practice. I carried a 1911 Officers Model, but owned several other side arms. I tried to stay proficient with all of them.

My wife took to shooting like a duck to water. She preferred the little Smith to any of the others. I started her out firing single action as soon as she understood and mastered the sight picture concept.

Within a month she was ready to begin double action drills. She had obtained a carry permit, and the M36 was made to order. My ex-wife in short order began to frequently tear out five round, one hole groups at seven yards. She even became frustrated if a shot wasn't in that ragged hole, even though the flyers were often figure eight hits.

Frankly, she irritated me one day when she asked me what was so hard about shooting. I told her to place the weapon on the counter and come with me. I took her off the line and walked her along the fifteen bay firing line.

I showed her the kind of shooting others were doing. There were some regulars there that day who were respectable shots. None of them were shooting as well as my wife.

To tell the truth I occasionally let one stray off of the X at seven yards, but consoled myself by focusing on the fact that I was practicing not only for accuracy, but for speed aquiring the 1911, but also point shooting. OK! Maybe I missed the X more than occasionally. They were all center of mass though.

The bottom line is that my wife can shoot. She was able to defend herself. I am confident that she would defend herself. That pleases me greatly.

I'm not so pleased that after the divorce she managed to hold on to that pistol. I have a sneaking suspicion that I will never get it back. All things considered, I'm not too upset by my loss. She is a really good person, and we are good friends. I'm glad she has the means to defend herself.

Hocky Goon..

Hope they all made it through the latest round of fighting.

Exactly, Rivenburg
The cops don't want to hear 2 stories. Any lawabiding person involved in a shooting is presumably fearing for their life. If shooting starts, shoot to kill. Empyting the gun in real or calculated panic will usually work and is better than having 2 stories. Best is enough gun and enough hits before they hit the ground.

A big milestone occurred about 1989. That was the year more felons ere killed during commission of a felony by citizens than cops. Rely on it, cops are little more than record keepers and snitch listeners. And with the foolish restrictions placed on cops by their superiors to avoid lawsuits, more and more cops just "don't see" as well as they used to. Why endanger yourself when the courts will make your action a waste of time and money.

As a rifle instructor in the service, i found females learn to shoot much quicker than males. Less foolish notions to overcome. If an instructor shoots a good group, they believe he knows what he's doing. All the guys think it was luck, or that they know a better way. I've never run into a female who, once she gave it an honest attempt, didn't get a kick out of seeing the size of her groups shrink towards and into the bullseye.

As for the .380, Magsafe and Cor-bon sell some mighty mean ammo, albeit expensive. Much better a .380 you have fired and trust than a .45 that is more gun than you like.

Goshawk
What an incredible story,
And by the Grace of God you survived!
As for the column,
a gun is a girl's best friend...

Practice Often
Constant training is mandatory. An unexpected crisis can cloud the mind and slow one's reaction time, but what has been thoroughly practiced will happen smoothly even without thinking.

Also, handgun accuracy is a skill that deteriorates if not maintained.

two points
one, home invasion errors by cops and bounty hunters have resulted in several innocent deaths here in PHX,
they would stop if the offenders were hunted in kind, I believe.

two, if you shoot someone, coup de gras is MANDITORY, just act panicked, it helps to be still standing there going "click click click" when witnesses show up.

Trust me, this is advice I got from the law here when involved in something similar, they dont want to hear two stories.

Think hard about it, ahead of time
Shooting someone is not funny, and it is not cool. It IS a lot better than being shot or stabbed or ... by the bad guy, though.

I encourage everyone to think about it, hard, ahead of time & then plan what you will do if / when the time comes when the bad guy needs to become shot.

Super column!
And great posts, so far. Perhaps I could add a true story that happened to me that some may find of interest. First let me say that I have four sisters. All own pistols and are expert with them. Nothing to do with my story, just wanted to comment about Ladies carrying.

Anyway, I'm a black belt in Kempo Karate. Now before you go raising your eyebrows let me explain. It's nothing like the movies.

This happened to me about twenty years ago:
My wife and I were at a party when one of her friends came running in screaming, her girlfriend was being attacked in the parking lot. I went to the door and saw a Mexican manhandling the girl. I ran out and took the guy off her with ease. What I didn't know was that he had two brothers and two friends, sitting in a car watching all this. They immediately attcked..with knives.
I had nothing. It became a ferocious fight! Me against the five of them.

Contrary to what movies portray. If you get into a fight like this your going to get hurt! By the time the police got there, I managed to Kill one with his own knife and severally injured another. Three ran off. I was taken to the hospital having received 35 stab wounds. 5 of which (according to the doctors) should have killed me. I spent the next 10 days in intensive care while they put me back together. Then several months recouping.

So, it's only by the grace of God and some skilled surgeons, I'm alive today. Stuff happens folks!

Don't let being blind in one eye hold you back. My sister has been blind in her right eye from birth, she can handle a 20 gauge shot gun just fine. For a small persons home defense weapon it's hard to beat a pump action 20 with a throat load of #6 lead.

I've been spending some time teaching my 6 year old the basics of safety while target shooting with his Cricket. Apparently teaching them young does work.

A while back we were watching a show and one of the charactors tried to take a shot (actually several shots) at something and learned his gun was empty. I asked my son what he did not wrong and his answer was "He didn't check his weapon to see if it was loaded when it was handed to him".

Rule #1, Treat every weapon like its loaded.
Rule #2, Muzzle Control
Rule #3, Check your weapon to see if its loaded.

Personal rule, there is nothing more dangerous or useless then an "unloaded" firearm.

Way to go girl
I agree with the mayor. Get yourself a .45, and load it with the hottest legal round you can find. Too bad that Black Talons are outlawed. Law enforcement types say that most self defense shootings occur at 21 feet, or less. It's kinda hard to miss the center of the mass at that range. Generally, one shot from my M1911a1 will knock him down, and if he tries to get up, shoot him again.

And what about the stupid dude in Texas, showing up at a gun fight with nothing but a knife? Shoulda shot him, then he could qualify for the Darwin award. And sent a message to the rest of the scum.

And remember, folks, if you shoot, shoot to kill. It saves us the cost of a criminal trial, as well as the lawsuits.

What a bunch of C**p I'm 71 years old and never forget I'm a woman or a lady and I shoot. In fact the first time I target shot my husband hung it up he said he had never seen some one as consistant in one area.
Crooks, do not dome to my home I will shoot.

The Libertarian CATO Institue has just released a book detailing misplaced "no knock" police raids where unintended people get shot, all too often the innocent homeowner who thought he or she was facing a robbery. The use of SWAT teams to serve everyday warrents in some jurisdictions is becoming a problem, especially when they kick in the door at the wrong house.

One thing about Maye's story...
You fail to mention that the shot officer was the Chief of Police's son. Add to this the fact that Jones is white, Maye is black and this is happening in Mississippi and you have a recipe for a true miscarriage of justice. The interesting thing is that Maye is a liberal cause, when he should be a conservative cause for the rights of homeowners, gun owners and self defense. Keep in mind he has been convicted of capital murder and is on death row. This for a man with no criminal record and no apparent pre-meditation whatsoever. How are you going to react when the police break down your door while you are asleep in the middle of the night?

NRALifer
Good point you made on investigating 'noises' in the house. Thanks.

I just heard about a new Taurus pistol
that will fire a 410 shotgun shell, or a cartridge. Imagine that with double ought loaded. I want one for Christmas.

The FIRST time 'they' should know you have a gun is when they see that bright, orange flash.
SCREAM at the top of your lungs while shooting. Nobody but a total idiot would want to stay around an hysterical person with a gun in their hand.

Real Women Warriors
That is A real woman's frist instinct, to protect, as she is fierce to protect her young. Amen A real woman warrior.

Thanks for digging out those reports. We do not hear enough about citizens who actually stand up for their rights--even if it means deadly force. It's about time!

Guns and soundbites
RE: Then there’s this Kansas woman, who not only carries a pistol, but is also armed with soundbites:

She pulled out her pistol and heard a knife click open.

When she looked back, she saw the man was holding a knife pointed downward in his hand.

She quickly turned, pointed the gun right at him and asked, "Are you really sure you want to do whatever you're going to do?"

Just a little notation concerning this incident. It did not take place in Kansas, but in Wichita Falls, Texas. It was carried as front page news by the local paper with the headline something like "Make Her Day". It sure made mine reading it..

You are right! I live in FL & I was shocked when they recently passed the castle law. It seems like common sense to be able to shoot someone (who's threatening you) without trying to run away 1st. Even if you shoot them in the back, who's to say they weren't turning away to pull their gun or running to retrieve their own weapon? And these no-knock warrant policies put gun owners at risk:
For instance:
Cory Maye, 23
Sometime in late 2001, Officer Ron Jones collected a tip from an anonymous informant that Jamie Smith, who lived opposite Maye in a duplex, was selling drugs out of his home. Jones passed the tip to the Pearl River Basin Narcotics Task Force, a regional police agency in charge of carrying out drug raids in four surrounding counties. The task force asked Jones if he'd like to come along on the raid they'd be conducting as the result of his tip. He obliged.

On the night of December 26, the task force donned paramilitary gear, and conducted a drug raid on Smith's house. Unfortunately, they hadn't done their homework. The team didn't realize that the house was a duplex, and that Maye -- who had no relationship with Smith,-- rented out the other side with his girlfirend and 1-year-old daughter.

As the raid on Smith commenced, some officers - including Jones -- went around to what they thought was a side door to Smith's residence, looking for a larger stash of drugs. (Note added on 12/12: This is Maye's first attorney's account of the raid. Police did have a warrant to both residences, though Maye wasn't named in either.) The door was actually a door to Maye's home. Maye was home alone with his young daughter, and asleep, when one member of the SWAT team broke down the outside door. Jones, who hadn't drawn his gun charged in, and made his way to Maye's bedroom. Police did not announce themselves. (Note added on 12/09/05: Police said at trial that they did announce themselves before entering Maye's apartment -- Maye and his attorney say otherwise. I'm inclined to believe Maye, for reasons outlined in this post. However, even if they did, announcing seconds before bursting in just before midnight, isn't much better than not announcing at all. An innocent person on the other end of the raid, particularly if still asleep, has every reason to fear for his life.). Maye, fearing for his life and the safety of his daughter, fired at Jones, hitting him in the abdomen, just below his bulletproof vest. Jones died a short time later.

Maye had no criminal record, and wasn't the target of the search warrant. Police initially concluded they had found no drugs in Maye's side of the duplex. Then, mysteriously, police later announced they'd found "traces" of marijuana. I talked to the attorney who represented Maye at trial. She said that to her knowledge, police had found one smoked marijuana cigarette in Maye's apartment. Regardless, since Maye wasn't the subject of the search, whether or not he had misdemeanor amounts of drugs in his possession isn't really relevant. What's relevant is whether or not he reasonably believed his life was in danger. Seems pretty clear to me that that would be a reasonable assumption.

It apparently wasn't so clear to Mississippi's criminal justice system. In January of last year, Maye was convicted of capital murder for the shooting of Officer Jones. He was sentenced to death by lethal injection.

February, 1999 SWAT conducted a no-knock drug raid, complete with flash-bang grenades. Heard was shot to death in front of his wife and 16-year-old daughter who had cried for help. Fearing home invasion, he was holding an empty rifle. The raid was at the wrong house.

This is happening all too often.

Gosh it's great...
to find people that agree with me! Having a CCW and carrying a titanium .38 S&W for self defense here in Phoenix is, in my opinion, necessary, given the lack of border control here, and what with home invasions, etc. I recently took my 17yo daughter to the gun club to get her started right with a Glock 19 (my Christmas/Hanukkah request for this year). Since I'm 53, 5'2" and 105, I'm never going to overpower a guy, but I can hit center of mass every time! Go girls!

Great reasons not to vote for lefty
Some of these stories might not have a good and amusing outcome had Gore or Kerry become Prez. Also a good reason to continue the trend toward protecting the Constitution from the Second Amendment bashing Senators and Presidential candidates on the left. Vote Freedom First. Environmental gun and hunting banners are destroying the heritage and way of life here in the northern state I live in. They are currently on a campaign to buy as much land as possible and shut down hunting everywhere. I vote the right way to protect my state from these types but we are over-run by New York and Massholechucetts liberals. I need some back up.

Young women should be what they choose to be! Few men grow up to be Rambo because thay watch action movies. Girls have many more role models in their lives than a few gun-toting babes in fiction movies! After all the millenias of female submission, today's girls need all the empowering they can get.

What I don't understand is how liberals who say they believe in civil rights for everybody can try to deny me my most basic of civil rights - to defend myself! Anti-gun groups should know prohibition doesn't work -- teaching safety & responsible gun use like the NRA does is the key.

Rose, Max & nan
MountainRose - My 75 year old mother still goes to the range to practice with the .357 & she's quiet accurate with it. Before dad (WWII vet) passed away, he made sure she knew how to use it.

Uncle Max - Where do you live? The farm community I was born in lost that lifestyle during the 80s.

nanarae - You trying to say that the posters are of a similar mindset to Janet Reno & the BATF? Not really - they kill for pleasure while the posters would only kill in self-defense.

Robert:
That is a troubling story indeed. I read a similar one, and headed straight for the local gun dealer and bought my wife a Taurus .38, and told her to keep her .22 in the closet when I leave town. We lived only a few minutes from the Mexican border at the time, and I told her to shoot to kill, and the only reason the cops need to come is to pick up the body.
There was another post about .380's being wimpy, and although I agree wholeheartedly, there are still dainty women in this world that aren't going to handle a .45 too well. My wife is one of them. I would rather she face an intruder confidently with her .38 than anticipate with fear the shot of one of my .45's, which she hates shooting. As for the Taurus, she loves it and feel sintimental about it since it was a gift from me, and she won't let me trade it in on a better one now that cost is less of an object.

Boy!
You people are bloodthirsty! I love it!

CCW
Now that our state will finally allow conceal and carry we have decided that my wife will probably get her permit and I won't bother. She has much more of a chance of needing to defend herself from an attacker then I ever will.

One gun is NOT enough ...
Having one gun for self-defense in your house in not enough. If you are caught in a situation where the intruder is between you and your firearm, well, it's time to call the boys with the chalk and "do not cross" yellow barrier tape ...
I believe in one gun per room, safely stored and loaded, of course, and DON'T let the perp leave your house alive! Our courts don't favor law-abiding citizens over criminals anymore. Especially here in Kalifornia! If there's only one side of the story to tell, there's no-one to dispute your word.

YOU GO GIRLS!
I bought my wife a 9mm S&W and she carries it everywhere with her! I spent several hundred dollars on ammo so she could do some heavy duty shooting, taught her how to fieldstrip and clean her weapon, then took her out for even more target practice. She is now as familiar with her weapon as I am with mine, and I own several.

She took the classes necessary in our state so she could obtain a concealed carry permit. Her pistol is an airweight, hammerless S&W and perfect for her purse or pocket. The law enforcement personnel doing the training were so impressed with her knowledge and comfort level that she was out of there in 4 hours.

For Bipsy Quee: My lady is every inch the lady. The only difference now is that she is a lady that can protect herself if the need ever arises.

Hey, Mary,
this is good stuff. The only thing missing is the climax..uh..rather, the dramatic ending where the perp is scraped off the floor and hauled off to the morgue. You know, where the decent citizen is confronted and says, "Go ahead punk, make my day," and then unloads 3 quick shots to the forehead before the perp can haul a*s.

It's also a reminder that it's time to hit the local Blockbuster and pull Death Wish 1 through 10 for review and reinforcement. Old Charlie Bronson had it just about right.

Except for one thing....
Heartwarming examples! But there is another problem.

A friend of my brother's, named Ben, was climbing into bed with his pregnant wife one night, heard a noise and discovered a man ripping the radio out of his van. He yelled at the burgler, who responded by emptying a stolen 9MM handgun at him, missing, and then reaching for a stolen .357 Magnum. Ben responded with his single shot .22 rifle, hitting the burgler in the chest and ending the gunfight. Then the real battle began.

It was an open and shut case of self-defense and Ben was not charged with anything. But the 17 prior Felony convictions burgler sued Ben in civil court and won. Ben lost his house.

Ben gto rid of his .22 rifle. And he bought a 30 'Ought six. He will still shoot but there will there will be no lawsuits afterwards. Plug'em and plant'em and keep your mouth shut, folks. "Musta been some kids with fireworks, officer. Now scuse me while I get back to bed. Got some heavy yardwork to do in the mornin'."

Then again, maybe he should have handed the gun to his pregnant wife...

Ladies take a bow...
My hat goes off to them.

And I agree with NRAlifer. People should take self defense more seriously. It involves a great deal more than just being able to acquire a sight picture and effective trigger control.

Just as a family would plan and practice for a fire or some other disaster so should they plan and practice for criminal confrontation.

Owning a firearm automatically attaches responsibility to it's owner. Practice, practice, practice and that doesn't mean just going to the rifle or pitol range.

Thank God we still have the Second Amendment.

Uncle Max, you miss my point...
I clearly differentiated between a woman defending herself and that which I see as a problem.

I'm not concerned that we men won't be able to tell the difference between men and women. (Well, actually I am but not in the context of my post, that is)

I'm concerned about young women being able to tell the difference between "womyn" and women and knowing whch one they should be.

And why.

try this
to bibsy quee - the future is fine. I don't think that women carrying weapons and being willing to use them to defend themselves and their homes and kids is going to cause us guys to forget that they are women. Trust me - we can tell

I've lived where I live for 2 years and change, I don't have a gun and I have no idea where the key to the house is (even when I was gone for 5 weeks last summer) and right now the car is out in the driveway with the keys in it as it always is and has been since I moved here and I live in ......

To mountain Rose, Commadore Barrett
Good article, great comments. I'm with you guys.(gals ;))..everytime I hear or read the news where some innocent person is killed or threatened by a thug I think "why can't we get more pro-active "?. And to nay-sayers (that we will definitely hear from).. Baloney! I'll get a gun before the Gun Control leftists take that right away too.

And the will to use them
Since I'm blind in one eye, I don't carry a gun (and now that I live in Kanukistan the point is moot anyway) but was fortunate enough to work for a lawyer who had been in the USMC and taught me a couple of very useful moves with a knife -- just enough to save my life so I can run away, which he said he advised both men and women to do if they could and I agree.

I have never had to slash anybody and I'm glad of it. However, I was walking across a flyover bridge from the subway in Atlanta one afternoon and realized that someone was 'pacing' me -- staying just in my blind spot on the right. I leaned down and pulled my knife out of my boot top and when I straightened up, whoever had been there had evaporated. Another time when I spotted a couple of Victims of Exclusion (as they are called up here) moving toward me from opposite directions on a subway platform, I got my back against a wall and didn't have to get the knife all the way out before the VOE had moved on.

Of course, up here as soon as they find out you're American, they ASSUME you're armed and dangerous, which doesn't hurt at all....

Celtic Dragon, no...
I didn't like Vasquez in Aliens.

There's a difference between a woman protecting herself and a woman who thinks she's a man and has to act like one.

When I first read the headline I thought that was what the article was going to be about; the disturbing trend in today's films and television programs where the woman is the action hero or otherwise "tough guy". Today's young women are increasingly being influenced to forget their femininity and assume the traits and characteristics of men.

It's bad enough that there is nothing in the popular culture showing young women how they should be; now that vacuum is being filled by perverse depictions of woman thinking they can be just as bad as men.

Erasing the distinction between the genders does not bode well for the future.

OOP'S
Type O

MINIMUN REQUIRMENTS
Two scatter gun's, three side arms, one auto or semi auto rifle, plenty of ammo and even more target practice. And if you want to take your show on the road... one CCW.

My spouse and I woke up to a sound
downstairs. We thought it was an intruder. I locked a mag in the 'Tommy gun' and poked around. I never found out what made the sound, but the weight and heft of the old Thompson sure made me feel better!

You're neat
Mary Katherine: Thanks for the article. I have read that most of the gun deaths in America are from instances just like you recounted. With enough armed and honest citizens, especially "helpless" ladies, the bad guys may have to find honest employment.

" In case they try to pull any violent stuff on the patriots of America"

ROFLMBO! They would only have the stones to attack other limp-wristed lefties.

MountainRose
Do it! There's nothing sexier than a Christian lady who knows how to shoot her own gun.

For simple defense purposes, I recommend a pistol or a pump-action shotgun (my favorite weapon). If you live on a very large lot, a rifle might do you some good too.

Another One
"The intruder was hit in the chest"

She knows where to aim too! The only problem I have with her is that she advertised her weapon.

Heyall YES!!
"she steadied her gun and fired twice at his abdomen."

Not only does she own AND carry a pistol, but she knows how to shoot! Is she single?

In re the BATF
BATF harassment goes nowhere in KY; the Appalachian Mountain Tradition of excellence in firearms training (the Scouts and equivalent organizations, and parents willing & able to teach their children in firearms safety) and the Kentucky Natural Resources Cabinet, tells the BATF they would go nowhere in their attempts to disarm the Commonwealth.

Kentucky has joined a growing number of States with preemption legislation when it comes to firearms. The Mountain Men (that coalition based in the Mountain Counties) rammed through such legislation, the Louisville delegation to the contrary -- without regards to party designation. Such legislation is legal, as the Federal Courts have determined.

And BATF still smarts from the Waco stigma, and its corollary. How many BATF agents are willing to go into the South Side of Chicago (for example) and enforce firearms confiscation legislation? There would be more names on the Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, for the inner city African American population would consider BATF as part of the Klan.

BrianR
So you must have liked "Vasquez" from the movie "Aliens" as she was kicking @ss with the M56 'smart gun'. ;-)

BrianR..
...it depends on where the barrel is pointed...

As a single guy...
... and NRA Life Member, I don't think there's anything hotter than a gal with a gun.

A .380?
That's kinda wimpy. Get yourself a compact .45.

The BATF
was deliberately targeting and harrasing female gun buyers at a gun show in Virginia this past year. Details of BATF issuance of summons, summary confinscation of legally purchased firearms and threats of prosecution have been gathered and corraberated by the NRA. Tell your Senators and Reps that we will not put up with OUR officials harrasing women who want to defend themselves or own a hunting weapon. It's disgracful!
