When you get right down to it, Mrs. Pelosi is really just another wealthy Democrat trying to pass herself off as a populist. To listen to her yammer, you’d think she carried her lunch in a paper bag and actually worked for a living. Furthermore, as a congresswoman, she represents a district in the least representative city in America. If San Francisco isn’t the single most liberal municipality in the country, it is certainly the most libertine.
Frankly, I can’t imagine what her colleagues were thinking when they chose to have her face and voice be the face and voice of their party. You’d have thought they would have gotten a wake-up call when she tried to push the corrupt John Murtha down their collective throats. But what is there to say about a party that puts people like Charles Rangel, Robert Byrd, Ted Kennedy and Howard Dean, in positions of power and influence? For my part, I can only say that 2008 can’t come soon enough.
If the Democrats want to delude themselves into believing they’ve done something great for women and wonderful for the country, there’s not much we can do about it. But the rest of us, the sane ones, should not so quickly overlook the fact that Rep. Pelosi’s power base is a city where transvestites, for God’s sake, constitute a voting bloc!
