Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Everybody is predicting big gains for the Democrats in November. If they succeed in taking the House of Representatives, that means that Nancy Pelosi is in our future. There is a lot about her that is distinctive, notably that she would be the first woman serving as speaker of the House, which incidentally would put her second, after the vice president, in line for the presidency. Exit Bush and Cheney simultaneously, enter President Nancy Pelosi, oh my God.

It's true, as she has said several times, that "people" don't know a great deal about her. Among other things, she serves the San Francisco constituency, which is happily unique. But her background is thoroughly political. Her father, Thomas D'Alesandro, was for many years the mayor of Baltimore, and one of her brothers also, though more briefly, served as mayor. The brief glimpses of Pelosi given on television recently show us one tough lady, but it pays for critics to remind themselves that she was overwhelmingly chosen as minority leader only four years ago. It is good fun to think that colleagues who'd have preferred someone else chose her for fear that otherwise she would train her unsparing eyes on them and hound them to death.

Her directness of speech was a subject Lesley Stahl of CBS' "60 Minutes" elected last week to emphasize, asking just how did she intend to achieve her goal of bringing civility back to Washington given the language she tends to use about Republicans. Pelosi, viewers were reminded, has called her Republican colleagues "immoral" and "corrupt," suggesting that they were backing a criminal enterprise. Stahl said: "I mean, you're one of the reasons we have to restore civility in the first place."

Pelosi raised her eyes in unconcern. "Well, actually, when I called them those names I was being gentle. There are much worse things I could have said about them."

Now that is a cute forensic technique. It has two effects. The first is to diminish the seriousness of the charges already leveled. The second is to awaken interest in the charges being held back in deference to civility. What are the Republicans actually conspiring to accomplish that is more grievous than the immorality and corruption they are already, according to Ms. Pelosi, bringing in through their criminal enterprise?

Ms. Stahl didn't ask the Democratic leader what exactly were the graver crimes she might have imputed to the Republicans. She turned instead to the problems raised by the need to associate with criminals: "If you're speaker, I'm wondering how you'll work with (President Bush)." Pelosi had charged that Bush was "an incompetent leader." Stahl remarks that the mere "sound" of such words is disruptive: "It even stings to hear it now. I mean, obviously, the two of you are bound to get along just great."

Pelosi gave a fine answer. "You know, we're professionals." She repeated herself. "We're professionals. You could go through a long list of things his (Bush's) surrogates have said about me. I know they have to do what they have to do, and they know I have to do what I have to do. And what I have to do is make a distinction in the public that's between the Democrats and the Republicans in order to win. This isn't personal."

"It sounds personal."

"This isn't personal."

"(You say) he's incompetent --"

"Well, I think he is."

"Well, that's personal."

"Well, I'm sorry, that's his problem."

"How does this raise the level of civility?" Stahl is yielding to despair on the point.

"Well, we're in a political debate here. We didn't come here to have a tea party together, and toss a coin to see who would win on an issue. I have very thick skin. I don't care what they say about me."

That is a very grand thing -- to announce that the woman who may be the next speaker of the House really doesn't care what is said about her. People who enter politics have to expect that there will be rough language ahead, used at their expense. It is so, also, for (most) writers and other public figures.

But Pelosi is advertising an indifference to necessary elements of democratic life, and this takes her one step further than giving evidence that her skin is thick. It moves the public concern to the meaning of words. If we are trained to attach no meaning to words used by Democrats about Republicans, and the other way around, we debase not merely language, but ideals. If Republicans in Congress are engaged in immoral and corrupt practices, then they should be replaced. Or, the things they do should be given other names.

Speaker Pelosi will be heir to an important tradition, exercising an important role. She should not begin with this profession of utter indifference to the language used to describe what she does, and indeed to describe her.

Oh

my

God

Pelosi as Pres?
Sounds like a great time to pick fights with North Korea, Iran, Venezuela and Mexico.

By that time of course the French Jihad will be threating us with suicide nuke bombers. So we might as well consider being at war with Muslim France, Spain not far behind.

Iran-Iraq-Syria will form a powerful Shi'a block and dare anyone to come after them, much less tell them to lay off the nukes.

Pres. Pelosi? Sounds like fun.

A pox on them all

I see this indifference in the left on these boards (and others) on a daily basis. I think it goes to the heart of what I and many other conservatives call "values". People like Nancy Pelosi leave me scratching my head in amazement at why on earth they ever went into politics to begin with. They seem to have no moral compass whatsoever. Am I or anyone else ever to believe that she, or Teddy, or John, or Hillary, or any of the rest of them have the slightest interest in our country or society?

Oh yeah sdan,
All of the critters you listed have a very definite interest in this country. They hate what it has been and they hate what it is.

They want to destroy America, and reconstruct it into the delusional monstrosity of a non-nation member of a one world Utopia. They are nutty enough to believe that once they have facilitated the defeat of America in Iraq, and in the war on terror, they will be able to reason with the monsters who want us dead.

The leftists are demented. They are immoral, unethical and without conscience. Deliberately refusing to vote for Republicans will put these traitors in a position to really destroy this nation.

The Rapture
I think Instapunk made a great point over a week ago.

Frightening, isn't it?

Peace, at last!
Well, now that our enemies are sure the Democrats and Nancey Pelosi will gain a majority, they can start their evil strategy again. I don't mean to say that it has ever stopped but now they can come at us again and be assured that we will not fight back. Like the 8 years under Bill Clinton...The USS Cole, The Kobar Towers and etc. We will bring the troops home and all will be well, once again. We can talk about finding the person or persons responsible when violence happens, but nothing will be done...
Ahhhhhhh...we will be at peace...just vote democrat and keep the country at peace.
Now, where did I leave my weed? Anyone....????

Just in case.....
anyone thought I had lost my mind....VOTE REPUBLICAN...it is the only way to keep this country safe. VOTE!! REPUBLICAN!

not here for a tea party or civility
Interesting it was Lesley Stahl of "60 Minutes" to emphasize the issue of Dems claiming they'll bring civility back to Washington. But then calling Pelosi to task for causing the problem, "in the first place".

Finally, a report validating what people already know, instead of another "Republicans are staying home on election day" invented story. All of my conservative friends cannot wait to go out to vote. (hint hint CBS)

Nancy Pelosi has overpayed to tough-gal act. Actually, that's being gentle. There are much worse things one could say about Ms. Pelosi. Such as hearing from her that bringing civility back to Washington is, "his (Bush's) problem."

Are there still any women's wrestling leagues in operation? Just in case this Speaker of the House gig falls through?

Pelosi is a nut job!
There I said it. Anyone care to disagree? I mean when your constituency is made up of liberal left-wing nut jobs, and they are your boss, what else can you be?
She uses language about our President that should be limited to nut-jobs and then acts like she is bringing civility back to Washington? That is akin to the tolerance movement actually exercising tolerance, which they are incapable of. If you say anything against the radical homsexuals, lesbians, cross dressers, man-boy love group, or the transgendered, its Katie Bar the door! It is so hard to understand people who are incapable of telling the truth.

MACZED:
Why would pelosi say that Bush is incompetent, then claim that she would not move to impeach him if in the majority?

Incompetence is not an impeachable offense. Read the Constitution.

Tap-you had to bring that up?
Didn't our subject once march with a founder of NAMBLA? Ms. Pelosi needs to be asked about that.

Pelosi is as evil as a human can be
Pelosi would abort her grandchildren if she could pass a post-partum abortion law. What she does with her words and desires are similar to the Islamic terrorists. Allow sex with children. Public sex among homosexuals. Democrats ordering abortions for others. Convert to secularism or be relegated to a second class area. When people have no morales their are no limits to the evil they will do to others.

Pelosi
Her words describe her!She is a perfect example of an "old Bxxxxx" who will say anything to advance her agenda of self aggrandizement. An amoral person at best similar to the Clintons but not nearly as "Suave".

That little post about Nancy....wow!
;-0 Wowwowowowo...how come that is not plastered all over the place..??? OH..nevermind....she is a democrat...it's OK...sorry!

Wholey Smokes, Buckley
I was already scared enough. Thanks alot for making my nightmares even worse!

Yes, indeed ... God help us!

Pelosi #3 in line???
This is more than enough information to get the point across....VOTE REPUBLICAN!!!!

Cowboy,
you sound unconvincing, like you're scared. What's got you spooked?
