Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

NOTE TO WALTER WILLIAMS READERS: THE FOLLOWING COLUMN CONTAINS LANGUAGE AND REFERENCES TO LANGUAGE THAT MAY BE OFFENSIVE TO SOME READERS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION.

Five police "mini-stations" will be located in Detroit public schools this year, primarily due to the merging of students from several high schools on the city's west side. According to a Sept. 1 Detroit Free Press article, armed police officers will patrol the hallways in an effort to stem violence.

During the 2005-06 school year, officials issued 39,318 disciplinary referrals and filed 5,500 crime reports, and that's not including truancy and property damage. Uniformed and undercover police officers ride on city buses that transport students to and from school. As of last year, according to a June 2006 USA Today report, Detroit's public school graduation rate is only 21.7 percent, the lowest among the nation's 50 largest school districts.

During the 2003-04 school year, only 52 of the nation's 92,000 public schools were labeled "persistently dangerous," a designation under the No Child Left Behind Act entitling students to move to an alternate "safe" school.

Philadelphia had 14 schools labeled as "persistently dangerous" and Baltimore had six. The level of violence in Philadelphia schools is so high that each high school is equipped with a walk-through metal detector, security cameras and a conveyor-belted X-ray machine that scans book bags and purses.

Philadelphia and Baltimore, like Detroit, have armed police to try to stem school violence. School violence, including assaults on teachers and staff, is not restricted to inner city schools but occurs also in suburban and rural schools. However, the bulk of the violence is at schools with large black populations.

One has to ask: What happened? I graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School in 1954. Franklin had just about the lowest academic rating of all Philadelphia high schools and probably the city's lowest income students. But what goes on today in Philadelphia high schools would have been inconceivable back then. There were no policemen in or around the schools, there wasn't wanton property destruction, profanities weren't heard up and down the hallways, and the farthest thought from a student's mind was to curse or assault a teacher.

Much of what's seen today is a result of harebrained ideas and a tolerance for barbaric behavior. Kathleen Parker cited such an example in her May 16 syndicated column. The case concerned teacher Elizabeth Kandrac, who was routinely verbally abused by black students at Brentwood Middle School in North Charleston, S.C. A sample of the abusive language: white b----, white m-----f-----, white c---, white ho. Despite frequent complaints, school officials did nothing to stop the abuse. They told her this racially charged profanity was simply part of the students' culture, and if Kandrac couldn't handle the students' cursing, she was in the wrong school. Kandrac brought suit alleging a racially hostile work environment, and the school district settled out of court for $200,000.

People with such a tolerant mindset are in effect saying that blacks are not to be held to civilized standards of conduct and academic expectations that might be enforced for others. That's a disgusting and debilitating notion. I guarantee you that years ago, such nonsense would not have been tolerated, and a person making excuses for barbaric behavior by black students would have been considered a lunatic.

What has been allowed in predominantly black schools is nothing less than a betrayal of the struggle paid with blood, sweat and tears by previous generations to make possible the educational opportunities so long denied blacks that are being routinely squandered today. Blacks who lived through that struggle and are no longer with us wouldn't have believed such a betrayal possible.

There's enough blame to go around for each to have his share: students who are alien and hostile to the education process, parents who don't give a damn, and the education establishment and politicians who accommodate and excuse this tragedy of black education.

Offensive to Some Readers --
-- the cold hard truth.

Until, or unless we rid ourselves of the
idea that ALL CHILDREN MUST be educated, we will have these problems. The students KNOW their teachers (by and large) Don't give a darn about them, they expect nothing FROM them exept to be 'a warm body'and as long as they attend - they will graduate.

The funny part may be the students KNOW they are NOT being educated - only coddled and catered to.

Expell troublemakers.
Grade students to show progress.
Bury the self-esteem issues in the garbage.
STOP all agendas, except TEACHING CORE subjects.
STOP teaching what directly contradicts parents.

I would LOVE to say it is JUST rap/hip hop, but it isn't. And it's not just a Black issue.

Vouchers Could Help
Why wait until the Feds get around to giving you "permission" to take your kid out of a school that's failing? By that time, the school is probably beyond help.

If parents could yank their kids out on any whim, and the education voucher just follows the kids to whichever school they choose, the schools would work harder to maintain parents' trust. They would be less likely to get so bad until the Feds decide to "do something."

Libtard coddling
expectations (from libtards) have become less and less over the years for the Black race. Every new handout to this race has the effect of putting them farther and farther behind.

There was a time (walter grew up back then) when it was acceptable for you to FAIL. Black, White, Yellow it did not matter and EVERYBODY knew this and acted accordingly.
Nowadays, if you are BLACK and you fail then you can just think "the system is not fair" and not be responsible for screwing up. And LIBTARDS will agree with you and give you stuff.

The Black race has been declining for a while,,, and in this same time frame the Asian race has been succeeding. They are doing better as a race than Blacks, Whites, Hispaics, whatever...

They seem to value hard work and personal responsiblity in larger %'s than other races. They prove that discrimination is NOT a factor to a RACE achieving success.

Blacks may be failing thier forefathers work on civil rights struggles by not fulfilling the promise open to them.... but Asians have not made the same mistake. They recognized THIS country as the best for opportunities and have come here to GET THEM. And so they are.

Asians are not looking for a helping hand. They are not dependant upon anybody else. They know if they fail it is THIER fault and not somebody else.

If we can change the mindset of Blacks, Whites, Hispanics etc.... to that of the ASIANS,,, then other races will see higher %'s of success too.

This requires a total and complete destruction of LIBTARD policies.

GOOD LUCK,,

New mindset required
Walters makes the point that a lot of the behavior in schools is barbaric. I couldn't agree more. Administrators, teachers and most especially parents need to agree on what will constitute acceptable behavior and then enforce it, on the flat end of a paddle if necessary. I don't believe in child abuse but I can vouch for the fact that the paddle hanging in front of the class, waiting to punish miscreants had a genuinely Christianizing effect on the whole class. Nobody, including the class toughs, wanted to be hauled up to the front of class and made to touch their toes while the teacher administered an appropriate number of whacks. That respect for authority carried over into high school where such measures were no longer required. I spent every day in class secure in the knowledge that no teacher in the world was creative enough to put a patch on the punishment I would get at home when my parents were notified of my malfeasance. Having those few preliinary housekeeping duties taken care of, my teachers were free to teach and not worry about what some punk was going to call them. Everyone in the system, police and judges included, was of one mind and one voice where we lovely children were concerned and we knew that appeals to a higher authority were futile. Curiously enough, that left us free to learn and not worry about what we could get away with, how we would show off for our peers.

The part about every authority figure in the community being of one mind and demanding acceptable behavior is the key.

It's important to note that
you cannot educate someone else. You can only educate yourself.

I know it sounds like a trite, throw-away phrase. But, consider the implications for the remainder of the students, the teachers and society at large when you have a large number of "students" who have no intention of actively learning anything.

Unfortunately, Americans don't have the time, guts or attention span to do the right thing.

If they show themselves to be unwilling to learn based on their actions, remove them from the education system and turn them over to the penal system.

You owe it to the kids and their families who are trying.

Greed of the Race Baiters

The race baiters Jesse, Al and the music industry are and have created this atmosphere which they are using to cash in on through their greed and at the same time ignoring the element they have created that feeds the frenzy they keep pouring gasoline on which is reversing the sacrifices blacks have made to get where they “had” come to.

The race baiters and music industry are having a worse effect on the blacks in this country than what slavery did to them being the race baiters are taking away the accomplishments others won for them through their sacrifices, years of discrimination and fighting for their rights.

There Are Alternatives
Vouchers are a good alternative. Inner city kids who desire a decent education could get one at a private school, without fearing for their lives.

Huge "warehouse" schools often don't work well (although some do) in today's society. Whatever the underlying reasons, there are many good, innovative ideas out there yet to be tried.

But the left, totally beholden to the unions -- teacher's and the big city building trades where so much money is squandered it would make you laugh if not for crying -- are totally unwilling to explore any alternatives. "More money" is their only idea, even though it has been proven time and again that additional spending doesn't yield improved results. It does, however, make many contractors and union members richer.

Meanwhile, the children suffer.

Thanks, Walter. You're a great teacher, and a powerful voice for good sense.

There Are Alternatives
Vouchers are one good alternative for inner city kids. Those who desire a decent education could get one at a private school of their own choice, without fearing for their lives or having to deal with a prison-like atmosphere five days a week.

There are many good, innovative ideas out there. But the left consistently blocks every attempt at substantive change.

Why? Because the left is totally beholden to the unions -- teachers and big city building trades -- whose only idea is “more money,” even though it has been proven that additional spending does not yield improved results. The only thing additional spending does is make contractors and union members richer.

Meanwhile, the children suffer.

Thanks Walter. You’re a helluva teacher, and a powerful voice for good sense.

My2sense...
It just enrages me to hear story after story telling of how more and more uncivilized Black youth are encouraged to act. I grew up at a time when it was just a few years after the desegregation transition of schools took place in my community in southeastern North Carolina.

My family never tolerated such foolishness, from my grandparents, parents to my aunts and uncles. Although they weren't all educated, they saw to it that their children were, myself included. Now that I am a parent, I reflect on the lessons I learned growing up and it's grounded me in the dedication and approach to how I raise and DISCIPLINE my kids. Those lessons being the fact that my grandmother grew up at a time when girls(black girls in particular) were regulated to being baby factories within the confines of teenage marriage. She somehow was able to raise five children, educate herself along the way and continually advise and guide the subsequent generations of her family. To me that is the true definition of strength, and it makes me take personal ownership of where I am today because of the sacrifices she and others of her generation made in the face of REAL systematic discrimination of the early 20th century. And I will not squander the opportunities I have before me because SHE and others in my family and community, paid the price.

I will not be contributing to the current lot of societal vermen that come from all communities but particularly from what has become acceptable from the black community.

Solution

The problem is simple. When people are given a $12K/yr product for free they do not respect and abuse the product.

Do away with giver-ment education and make parents pay for it. The parents that believe they are not getting a good product for their children will find a better skul (sic) or if the kid is a dunce or problem, get him out early on to save the $12K.

Have you ever looked into the shopping carts stuffed to the ceiling at the grocery store? The folks pull out food stamps. The carts are filled with the most expensive garbage and treats. However, the folks that pay, have small purchases generally of essential nutrition. Again, when you don’t pay for it, why not abuse it.

In ten years when eating at a restuarant becomes a right, Ruth Chris steakhouses will be on every corner of AmeriKa. Those roudy high skul kids will be eating next to you playing their boom boxes, throwing desert around the room, having fights etc. That is what happens when it is free.

Just lock the doors
For the schools that already have everything but locked cell doors in them, just add that one thing, put in some bunks and lock the doors. If they happen to learn anything, well okay, but in the meanwhile they will be off the streets and incidentally not producing more illegitimate children to perpetuate the barbarity.

This situation is so unstable that it will not be long until these communities, if you want to call them this, explode and exterminate one another. I hope that the riot police can keep the destruction bottled up until it consumes the garbage totally.

Meanwhile if you actually care about your kids, take them out of these prisons and put them in private schools even if you have to take a second job. As Woody Allen said, the way to survive a bomb is not to be there when it goes off.

Hard to know
Where to start. Having taught Asians for the last 15 years and currently teaching them now, I can tell you that their cultural expectations make walls that are difficult for individuals to climb out of. They mostly never think of "my" destiny, and don't feel comfortable making decisions on their own. And, when shame is brought on the family name, some just kill themselves.
The "hyper-individualism" that has infected the U.S. is reflected in the entitlement mentality. If a child dies on the operating table, who can I sue... I'm entitled to a healthy child.
I could go on, but the direction of the U.S. "Ship of State" needs to do a 180, and soon.

Unwilling "students"
As one who began teaching in the slums in 1952 in St. Louis and taught, or tried to teach, his last course in a college in 2004, Walter Williams is absolutely correct, but the problem goes well beyond race and high school. Lord love the prof who thinks that students should learn the subject he teaches or fail, they will find some reason to complain to a compliant and fearful administrator who will say, "lets keep the peace." Bill D.

School lost.
Dr. Williams, may I call you Walter, I have listened to you on radio and read your writing for so long I feel as if you are a trusted friend. I entered school in 1968, first in Atlanta, Georgia, then for one year in New Orleans. Then we returned to my family home in Pearl River county, Mississippi. Through most of elementary school I was as oblivious to the world as most children. Though living in a family that had members working and living in the Mid-East and Asia I quickly became aware of the world, and also became an ardent student of history and the contemporary social and political gestalt. I watched our local school system morph into a pathetic, ineffectual shadow of itself.

The school district I went to graduated doctors, engineers, and teachers of high quality. Up until the mid-70s. Since then it has plunged off the map. It is not just race. It is an ongoing societal deconstruction, call it Marxist, call Progressive. It has had the effect of destroying what was the best public educational system in the world.

We are not able to homeschool, we have and continue to supplement our son's education. His teachers are routine impressed and surprised by the depth and breadth of his mind. His one failing? He needs to apply himself to those subjects that are difficult. Like all kids.

People have got to educate their own children. Public schools are a failure. To pretend otherwise is the height self-delusion.

It's all about
what we as a nation have decided to accept. It starts with parenting and evolves into being a useful citizen. Too many of us just seem to have given up on both responsibilities. We are willing to allow perfect strangers run our lives for us.

We have become lazy and no longer care in establishing character in ourselves or our children. Without character you have nothing but disrespect.

We have givin the power to others to determine our destiny without asking for accountability. It starts with using baby sitters or nanny's to raise our children and moves on to school boards run by crooked politicians that care only for re-election and continues all the way to The Senate.

We have discarded values that originated from our forefathers belief in GOD, and traded it for secular pleasures. What did we expect?

Student Detector
Metal detectors at school should be called student detectors. Anyone caught with any gun, knife, drugs, bomb, explosive, or illegal substance trying to enter a school is immediately ban forever from any school and is prosecuted. At the time of prosecution this person is also declared a non student without possibility of ever entering a school again.

Betrayal?
Dr. Williams I am not sure I would call what you described so accuratly and clearly "betrayal". Does not betrayal mean deliberate, planned, and thought out actions designed for specific results? Did / do students, parents, schools, and politicians "plan" this results? Or is this a combination of a lot of things, such as neglect, do not care attitue, political gain, simple stupidity (I mean how can anyone not know or care about what is happening right in front of their faces every day and then do nothing?), loss of respect for self and others, greed, and "I want it now" attitude. IMHO!

They Are Either In, Or Out
If a child cannot act decently in school, expell them and when caught committing a crime, put them in jail. I am not against my taxes being used to build more jails. As an alternative, I would also offer any such child sixteen or older, with written parent consent, a one-way plane ticket to anywhere else in the world.

We are doomed
During the 2003-04 school year, only 52 of the nation's 92,000 public schools were labeled "persistently dangerous,"

Just imagine what a school would have to do for it to be rated by the liberal school system as "dangerous". Lord, I would be afraid to send my child there. It would probably be like sending your child to school in Beirut, but then again, isn’t Detroit getting to be like Beirut?

And the example of Brentwood Middle School in North Charleston, S.C., I wonder why I haven’t heard about that one. Bman, did you here about that case? For all you people out there who don’t know about S.C., here’s a new rub for you. S.C. just changed the tax laws so that schools are no longer supported by property tax. Although this was advertised as a "tax break" what it was was a settlement in a suit from one of the "poor" counties who alleged discrimination because of unequal funding as "rich" counties. What that means now is that Statewide taxpayers are supporting lunacy like that case in Charleston. In a real business school administrators who caused their schools to be sued in this manner would be fired. Instead what we will have is they will be promoted and given bonuses. Such is the way of governments and the reason why private enterprises is always better than government for getting things done.

And it just reinforces the point I have been making for a long time. Eliminate ALL public schools.

Random thoughts - no answers
I can imagine the problems with adolescents being unattended during the day, but why is a child whose principal goal is to disrupt school compelled to attend?

---

When a school system is rewarded based on the number of warm back-sides in chairs at the second roll-call, it will maximize the number of warm back-sides in chairs at second roll-call.

---

Why is the state the monopoly supplier of school houses?

I could be that private schools are not too keen on vouchers (at least the ones I am familiar with) as they don't want the legal freight which comes with government money. (Yet they reach out to underprivileged kids.)

---

Why does the public school system insist that a teacher can teach something not fully understood by that teacher?

---

Why is public school completely tuition free? My observation is that free things as generally treated as worthless.

I pay three tuitions a year. The two for my own kids and the third (in taxes) for the public schools. My own two kids have the better deal.

---

I graduated from a public high school. That was enough for me.

On the nail, Unca Alby!
No question, cold-hard truth IS offencive to many.

I have to wonder
Why any parent who loves their children would send one to the education destruction derbies of public schools.

No one is going to change this rotten system, its too many peoples bread and butter, regardless what happens to the mind of the child.

This public school system is geared to benefit everything but the child, and it is NOT the teachers fault any more than it is God's.

From what I see happening (today) in public schools from cities like Detroit, the child would be better off never sitting foot in a classroom.

Sorta like the old world mentality of sacrificing them to some fire eating god.
Everyone should just stop sending them to their destruction and even if they never learn to spell their own names, they would still be better off.
Money making is not everything life has to offer.

I read a proverb once and could not understand it, but do now.

"there is a generation that is pure in their own eyes, yet not cleansed from their sins"

The policies of the public funded public schools handing power of education over to the bureaucrats is madness.
The NEA and Department of Education
Now the UN is running a lot of it here in America as well as the entire world.
UNICEF

These people are no different than the old high priests of by-gone days who offered the children up to their gods.(in my judgment)

When are we going to take back
our country from the mush headed libs?
I too graduated from High school in 1954, but a small town Wyoming school. Had we even acted up on the school bus, we could have walked home...miles, not blocks! To have even considered such a thing as talking out of turn in class would have been unthinkable.
It is time to put the politically correct libs in a box where they can do no more damage, and put strict discipline back in our schools.
The kids that get kicked out can go to work on road crews picking up trash, cleaning streets, etc, and make them do it if they have to be chained together. Then let's see how they like showing off to their friends. If Jesse, Al, and friends want to protest...put them to work too, even viusalizing that sight in my mind adds joy to my whole day!

50 Years of LIberal Policies
Why does this insanity seem to be far worse in cities run by liberals for generations? Are there dots to connect here?

Dr. Williams has this exactly right.

If only the KKK had known they could destroy the black race so simply by letting liberals create policies to "save" them! Tyrants take note; when you want to destroy a group; just make them dependents of liberal policies instead of all that messy killing!

As long...
... as there is a government/teachers union monopoly over public education, there will be no change. Put the power over educational choices where it belongs: in the hands of the consumer, not the supplier -- in the hands of the parents.

Re: 50 Years of LIberal Policies
The KKK DOES know that. That's why Robert Byrd is a liberal Democrat.

Williams is correct
I have no disagreement with Williams on this. I went to an inner city public school, and they're a nightmare! The parents have little control over their children and the level of disrespect allowed towards the teachers is unbelievable. The rotten apples make it difficult for good kids to learn in the environment. The inner city public schools are definitely overpriced prisons for teens in the inner city. This is why I support federally funded vouchers for poor student’s grades 1 -12 so that responsible parents are able to send their children to better schools.

let's try real freedom!
Just a thought experiment - if a student a generation ago had cursed the teachers, what would have been the onsequences? Detention, a call to the parent - who would have supported the school - and expulsion. Today, education is a "right" which cannot be denied even to disruptive students.

A few years ago, I live in Pittsburgh's North Side, a mixed neighborhood with a largely black population. There were two schools within a few blocks - the Martin Luther King government school, and a small Catholic school which I walked past every day. Most students were black. My neighbor, who earned about $12,000 per year, sacrificed much to send her daughter there. I doubt that nuns have changed much since my day; it's a safe bet that profanity and disruptive behavior are not permitted in that school, regardless of the color of one's skin. My neighbor was not Catholic, but this school did a better job of teaching her daughter than the "free" alternative provided by the government.

Sadly, economists and politicians who tout the virtues of the free market in every other aspect of our lives, from grocery stores to medicine to automobiles, have accepted the myth that education must be provided by the government. James Tooley, however, reports that even the poorest parts of India and Africa have thriving networks of private schools, many of which cater to the very poor students. It's a safe bet that students in these schools are encouraged to learn, rather than curse and assault one another.

Regards,

Public education culture
We're now merely witnessing (and feeling) the effects of political correctness and "deep thinking" of the PE culture.

Once having supervised an alternative high school for three and a half years, my first few months on the job were a complete shock. I was not from the public education culture, but was hired due to my background in mental health and corrections.

The first surprise was that there were very few fully mature adults in charge even though most senior adminstrators were well over age 50.

The system was completely feminized with all kinds of warm and fuzzy programs and beliefs designed to make the students feel good about themselves. I'm not remotely kidding.

If a topic was too difficult, it was the teacher's insensitivity to the inability of the student. If student Sally or Johnny acted out on a regular basis, it was because their parents were neglectful which made the miscreants inherently "not guilty" of school infractions. We all just had to understand.

The phrase "you don't care about kids(!)" was the standard response leveled at you from impaired parents and ditzy administrators if you violated one or more of the following PE cultural rules:

If you told them, "no", and meant it.

If you told them they must work harder.

If you told them to stop acting out or face suspension.

If you suspended them.

If you said, "no foul language is allowed".

If you ordered them to pull up their pants.

If you said, "no bling".

If you say to the student, "behaviors equal consequences".

If you say to the student, "you failed this test, (or class, or semester)".

public education culture pt.2
Most administrators and impaired parents really believed that to hold a teenager accountable for their actions was considered brutal behavior.

My experience was in a predominantly white school district. There were very few offenders, but of those, they often caused school-wide disruption, and strongly influenced the behaviors of others.

Students who do act like lower animals do so because they can. It's really that simple.

More On "50 Years of LIberal Policies"
The dots are easy to connect. When the dots are connected the words come out 'racial hatred on the part of liberals'. Liberals, socialists and communists have always harbored horrific racial hatred to blacks.

Following Katrina, every liberal news medium portrayed all blacks as murderers, drug dealers and users, rapists, cannibals (to name a few of their accusations and insinuations). The libs based their lies on claims that New Orleans blacks committed thousands of murders , rapes and robberies following Katrina-when in fact only 4 murders were commited. In other words, the liberal press put out stories claiming blacks commited crimes knowing the crimes were never commited at all.

Remember the stories of violent, murdering, raping blacks shooting at rescue helicopters? Never happened!!! Not one time did anyone shoot at a helicopter. The liberals made up every one of those 'stories'.

For years I have heard liberals say affirmative action is needed because blacks are simply not smart enough to get into colleges and graduate with the same standards as whites. Clarence Thomas was admitted to the Yale law school because he was one of the smartest applicants it ever had. Thomas had excellent grades at Yale. However his diploma was 'worthless' because people assumed he was dumb because all blacks were dumb according to liberals. In contrast, John Kerry was a D student while majoring in sissy courses. He's one of the libs saying blacks need affirmative action because they're dumb.

What is happening in Philadelphia and Detroit is because the libs running these schools employ policies and practices intended to create bad conduct among blacks. It's all about political power and the willingess to hurt people (especially people you hate) to get that power.

The Problem with Our Public Schools
It seems to me that the more we took God & morals out of the public schools, the more violence & bad attitudes we have. There is no respect for themselves, teachers or parents. This is a much larger problem than we realize & it affects all races in all areas of our country. If there are no consequences to what they do, then why should they stop? When there's no support for the good teachers they do have in these schools, why would the teacher stay? Everything has to be "politically correct" now so no one is ever offended by anything that is said or done (ridiculous).

A cultural thing??
I heard that Whoopi tried to give a pass to Mike Vick on the dog thing..It is part of his culture as a southern Black to be involved in dog fighting, she claimed. Isaeha Thomas (sorry for the spelling) tried the same thing in his sexual harassment trial. And to think, there are those on the left who claim all cultures are equal.

Get to the Basics of the Problem
OK. Let's face it and tell it like it really is! What we have here is a failure of the home and having 2 parents in the home to guide the children. Look up the statistics on what is happening in the black community as far as teenage pregnancies, fatherless children, etc. I know a lot of folks are going to yell, "racist" but even Jesse Jackson admitted this on TV the other night with Bill O. Somehow, the black community MUST work within its own community and turn this around. The government cannot do it and the white community cannot do it. It has to be the black community.

The other real problem has been mentioned in this thread. It is that the Teacher's Unions now are in total control of the classroom. The NEA is a facist organization and if things continue the way they have gone the past 25 years, we will NOT have a public school system in another 10 years. Teachers act "en loco parentis" according to the original founding fathers of education. That means that they are "in the place of parents". But, they are not allowed to do just that because the political correctness freaks are preventing them from doing so.

Someone (be it parents, administrators, or local school boards)have to STAND UP and say "We have had enough and we are not going to allow this anymore! We are going to allow those who WANT an education to get one and not be prevented by those WHO DO NOT!"

Mr. Williams, you are exactly right. Something has to be done and done NOW. Our schools CANNOT be prisons where people send the most prized possession they have (their children) only to have them suffer at the hands of thugs.

AND one other thing, while I am at it, what person in his or her right mind would be willing to walk into a classroom on a daily basis and be in fear for his/her life? Not me. How about you?

Dr. Williams
sounds to me like the left is frightened by these people so they just appease them. We all know what happens when you begin that process.

"When the very best American students — the top one percent — are measured against the best students of other countries, America's best and brightest finished at the bottom."

Even if this is an exaggeration(do not know how true it is), it would be a small one, I am willing to bet from what I see going on.

Problem with all of us is just not taking charge of our own lives and trusting it to others.
Get the Feds out of Education.
And all the other programs they screw up

School
My son has complained to me that it is hard to put up with the constant swearing in school the smell of weed on kids who come to school makes him sick (He asked,"Why do they have to smoke it every day dad?" "They are addicted." I tell him.

Indicator
"The case concerned teacher Elizabeth Kandrac, who was routinely verbally abused by black students at Brentwood Middle School in North Charleston, S.C. A sample of the abusive language: white b----, white m-----f-----, white c---, white ho. Despite frequent complaints, school officials did nothing to stop the abuse."

Someday this student will apply for a job and wonder why he didn't get hired. If he does get hired he will wonder why his co-workers don't like him or trust him and why his boss doesn't promote him.

And eventually he will file a lawsuit alleging racial discrimination.

Our Schools are Failing...
Where are the parents? If a child is verbally abusing his teachers, what happens when that child leaves the school campus?

Williams is crazy...as usual!
It is a shame that William's is so ashamed to be black. He attempts to make the case that high academic achievement, avoidance of drugs, eschewing violent crime, and being literate is something to be proud of. Such pride is an illusion if one has to betray their own culture to obtain it.

Blacks should instead take pride in the fact that their culture promotes violence, illegitimacy, and illiteracy since it is THEIR culture. A black that can actually read is an insult to the members of their race who refuse to "act white". And so what if black fathers desert their children? It is the black way, and they should not have to apologize for it simply because another culture doesn't make such a practice.

Blacks should stand fast and refuse to adopt the ways of other cultures. What good does it do to be able to read a book, write your name, or hold a job if it means you are a sellout? The Left recognizes that blacks do not want to achieve the way whites do, and thankfully the Left is willing to encourage blacks to remain at the lower rung where they prefer to be. To require blacks to act white is simply racist.

No magic bullets
Not so long ago the Civil Rights Movement wandered off into the wilderness of affirmative action. Worse than wandering, it was a retreat into racial segregation. There are standards for Whites and standards for Blacks. Whites compete against Whites, Blacks against Blacks. A segregated Black "culture" arose that walled itself off from any culture or cultural standards around it, standards by which its elements could be evaluated. It's embarassing as a human being to listen to some Black athletes on television try to speak the English language. The sad part is that no one can point out that they are butchering their native tongue because, somehow, being literate and articulate is not part of "Black" culture. In fact, the people appearing with them treat them with great esteem. With such examples, how can young Blacks be persuaded that education is valuable?

"Where are the parents?"

Why are you using the plural?

More than 70% of these kids have no father.

By the time a boy is 12 or 13 he often has little use for the discipline of his mother.

But don't tell the Democrats it's their fault. Their welfare scheme to create generation after generation of incorrigible kids fits nicely with the NEA's and AFT's excuses for why they can't/won't/don't teach these kids anything, and with the reality that these teacher's unions are the second and fourth largest donors to the DNC.

What are you talking about? That is totally nonsensical!

I hope you are joking...but...I guess that since you are Democrat, you are not joking.

Your whole response just makes no sense whatsoever!

"The Left recognizes that blacks do not want to achieve the way whites do, and thankfully the Left is willing to encourage blacks to remain at the lower rung where they prefer to be."

Well said...coming from a Liberal!

In Philadelphia
in the forties and fifties boys who could not be controlled in public schools were sent to Daniel Boone. At Boone there were male teachers who dealt with any assaultive behavior of those kids in a manner that was understandable to them.

There was a track that unmanagable boys traveled. If they didn't correct their behavior at Boone they either left school entirely, which was against the law, or committed some offence that esultd in their incarceration at Glen Mills, a juvenile detention center.

The incorrigables graduated from Glen Mills to White Hill, another juvenile facility, but much closer to being a jail for adults. From there the next stop was one of the county jails. Moyamensing Prison in South Philadelphia, or Holmsberg in the Northeast.

Then, for the dedicated felons, it was on to Eastern Statre Penitentiary, Cherry Hill Division, in North Philadelphia, (That was where Willie Sutton tunneled his way under the wall and escaped). Other destinations for the truly determined, were Graterford Penitentiary, north of the city, or Western State Penitentiary, in the wetern part of the state.

The purpose of this historical tour is to illustrate the reason public schools then were able to actually teach students. Between then and now we have had the liberal experimentation on students, and the focus on indoctrination into the socialist mindset of students.

Trouble making students were removed from the system. Their self esteem was of less concern to teachers than teaching other students. Which scenario do you think is better?

One More Thing
Has anyone ever heard the old saying that I grew up hearing years ago:

"You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink."?

I used to be a public school teacher and know firsthand that this addage is very true when it comes to educating someone who does not want to be educated.

It is a mindset and MUST be changed or we ALL are in trouble. It can ONLY be changed within the framework of the home.

Walter - A Serious Question
Here is an important question. One that I don't believe has yet to be asked in the immigration debate.

Why should we trust the Censur Bureau's estimate of 12 million illegal aliens in the country? Certainly, it is to the governments advantage to keep the number as low as possible so they can ram amnesty down our throats, but why do we assume that a door-to-door count of illegal aliens would be accurate?

Surely, all forty immigrants living in a flop house aren't going to hang around for the census lady - no matter how confidential she claims the data will be, they won't trust her. AT any hour of the day, half could be out working jobs (a problem she won't encounter with certain welfare recipients).

So how do we know it is 12 million and not thirty million? And when each brings in five relatives (and, believe me, every one of them will find five relatives to bring in) how do we know the final number will only be 50 million and not 150 million? All new citizens, all anxious to return as much of America as possible into a Spanish-speaking mirror of Mexico. All cometing for jobs, gasoline and food?

As conservatives, don't we owe it to AMerica to ask this question before plunging head-first down a path from which we can never return?

Parents
Its all about not having two parents that give a darn - if a child is raised like an animal it will behave like an animal - it is sad, the government can't fix it, and the fault goes to modern liberalism and political correctness (a culture of holding no one accountable).

TIME LINE PART ONE

.....Williams ...

.....It is easy to see where the deterioration of the Public School System began ...

.....It began with "forced intergration" of the Public Schools in the '50s ...the coup-de-grace was LBJ's "Great Society" and The Civil Right Act in the '60s which among it's many evils allowed the ACLU to have their fees paid for by Federal Tax dollars ...

...Forced Intergration of the Public Schools:

...The first thing to go was academic standards ...when teachers saw that blacks had a problem keeping up standard were lowered and then when they still had trouble they were just passed along (social Promotions) as academic standards were lowered to accomodate the black students ...the white student were cheated out of a good education ...

.....School Discipline:

When blacks realized that if they were prodded to get better grades or disciplined by their white teachers all they had to do was cry RACISM to get off the hook ...continued in part two .....COLOSSUS

TIME LINE - PART TWO

.....Enter White guilt and Political Correctness:

.....White cowardice and fear of being labeled a racist resulted in public schools with little or no academic standards and virtually no discipline ...and there you have it ...the Public School System today after 50 years of Affirmative Action ...

..."The coup-de-grace:

.....LBJ's "Great Society" and the Civil Rights Act of the sixties and Social Welfare ...LBJ's Social Welfare programs virtually destroyed the core two parent family ...the poor and especially the Black community were devastated ...single parent families became common ...

.....Combine a Public School System with low academic standards and virtually no discipline with a group of kids from fatherless homes and you have a ticking time bomb waiting to go off ...

.....this is not rocket science ...all one needs to do is backtrack the last fifty years to see how we got here ...the bonus question is ...how do we undo 50 years of mistaken Liberal and Socialist policy decisions and fix the problem today? .....COLOSSUS

oneeye???
I'm not sure what you are getting at. Advocates for blacks clearly state that such behavior is part of black culture. Such is the case with Michael Vick: dogfighting is just something that blacks do, and should therefore be excused.

It is ridiculous for whites to expect blacks to behave as whites do. Whites in general find it proper to become educated, abide by the law, not create illegitimate offspring, and avoid drugs. These are considered by blacks to be white traits, and they have no desire to abandon their culture by acting white.

Blacks know there is a price to be paid for remaining true to their culture, but fortunately there are plenty of social programs and affirmative action to help them make up the losses they incur by remaining true to their culture while immersed in the white man's world. Whites brought blacks into this foreign culture, and they should indeed shoulder the financial burdens suffered by blacks who are desperately clinging to their own culture.

It is time for whites to stop judging blacks based on how well they adhere to white standards.

Ironic
That the same teachers who complain they can't teach due to the discipline problems are the ones who refuse to expect discipline. You would think the teachers' unions would be the first to demand that abusive students be suspended, expelled, etc. If I were a teacher I have to believe my problem would be leaning too far towards strict and early discipline rather than making excuses. Set the tone early, in first grade, that such nonsense will not be tolerated and stand by it. Just not that tough.

Military School / Bootcamp
This is not just happening in Detroit, but almost everywhere. And if you think it's only the black students, you are sorely mistaken. Fat Freshed Mouthed Insolent Dangerous Brats have not one definitive color or economic background.

I live in a leafy suburbia, and the public schools are filled with all races, and 80% of the student body act and are dressed like street rats. They are defiant and dangerous.

Sometimes I thank God I never had children, but if I did, and my child came home looking and smelling like Snoop Dog with a knife in his backpack, do you know what I would do?

I would shave his head myself, burn his clothes, and put him on the next bus to Boot camp where they would make him become a man and lern discipline, or else.......If he still comes back a thug--he goes straight back to the place where he can be forced to work his arse off and be screamed at if he gets out of line.

Seriously, why aren't parents doing this?

The Real Problem
Government-run, tax-funded (grtf, aka welfare) schools are the problem. It is not that government fails to do anything well, it is that it CANNOT do anything well. There is nothing that government does well and education is no exception.

When Horace Mann established grtf-welfare schools in the 1830s & 40s, he imported them from Prussia. Prussian schools were the Kaiser's response to his loss at Jenna. He assumed his troops disobeyed his commanders' orders because they weren't sufficiently subservient. His counselors invented a school system that would overcome that tendency.

The fact that teaching reading is beyond grtf-welfare schools is not an accident. People who can read may think. Those who think are hard to drive, but easy to lead. However, true leadership is hard work -- and our "leaders" are just as lazy as anyone else.

There is an iron law of humanity: you can determine exactly what anyone (or any organization) really wants by what he/it accomplishes over time. With a virtually unlimited budget and other resources, we have a nation of illiterates, all of whom attended a grtf-welfare school.

Vouchers will not, nor can, work. They will prove to be a Trojan Horse that will destroy all alternatives to the state-run monopoly on training. Please do not fall for the "free money" bait, 'cause the trap will be deadly to your children's future.

You must save your children from the indoctrination centers run by the state. Or else you will have children who (by design) despise you, but will have no freedom at all.

LS -- the Voucher Trojan Horse
I think it depends on how it's implemented. There is an infinity of wrong ways to do something.

One very good way would be to do the following:

1. Abolish any taxes used to fund any school.
2. Charge tuition to everyone who attends schools. (This is the full-privatization route)
3. For the "poor" (defined however you want to define it), set up a voucher, similar to food stamps, which can be used to cover part or all of the tuition at any school that accepts them.

Think about it -- if the government ran grocery stores the way it runs the public schools, we'd all starve to death. Private enterprise runs the grocery stores, and most grocery stores accept food stamps in lieu of cash. It's a partially-socialized solution, but surely better than having the government run the grocery stores!

Nick in Austin on Illegals
It's an estimate because a large number of people, knowing they're breaking the law, tend to be a little hesitant in speaking to "official" type people who may only want to count them. So a lot of it is really "guestimating".

Back in the old days, we had WAG, which stood for "Wild-A**ed-Guess." Sometimes, you'd do a little arithmetic, and make it a SWAG -- "Scientific Wild-A**ed-Guess."

I've heard estimates varying from 12 million to 20 million. Everyone I've read accepts that range as being the most likely. But, the "commonly accepted" figure appears to be 12 million, from all sides of the debate.

But the bottom line is, we don't really know for sure, but we need to have *some* kind of number so we'll have some idea what we're up against.

At last, a conservative who is willing to say what I suspect lots of conservatives think, but aren't willing to say. Conservatives were opposed to civil rights legislation in the 1950s/60s, and, from a conservative standpoint, they were consistent in doing so.

As a liberal, I disagree with your claim that protecting the rights of blacks to vote and have equal opportunities is a major cause of the problems we see in many schools today. The larger cause is the breakdown of the black family, and I completely agree with conservatives that this was accelereated by the way welfare was handled. The old AFDC system (please note, conservatives--this no longer exists) created massive disincentives for the formation and maintenance of stable families. The problems generated by ill-conceived policies were made worese by the ideological claim (and yes, here I'll have to say that feminists had a big role in this) that single motherhood was easy, posed no problems for the rearing of children, and was justified because it satisfied the emotional needs of the mother.

As a liberal I was on college campus in those days, first as a student and later as an academic, and I recall many arguments with feminist colleagues (and those who agreed with them) who maintained that children could be raised equally well or better by single mothers than by traditional families. My wife put it more bluntly many years ago: "The women's movement is going to be carried on the backs of the children."

I can be a liberal and still have fundamental criticisms of parts of the liberal mind-set and liberal policies. And I still don't think conservatism has all the answers.

It's not just the schools, it's the city
You cannot separate the collapse of the Detroit public schools from the collapse of the rest of the city of Detroit.

Detroit has the second highest crime rate of any major city in the nation. The schools are just mirroring the overall violence and disrespect for the rule of law in the city itself.

This is exactly the morass that New York City had gotten itself into, under a succession of liberal mayors like Beame and Dinkins: Business and decent people flee the crime and violence, leaving behind a city of poor people, many of them on welfare.

You can't fix the Detroit public schools without fixing the rest of Detroit. Many of those violent kids come from violent broken homes and violent parents; it's a self-perpetuating cycle.

Detroit desperately needs a hard-nosed mayor in the style of Rudy Giuliani to start cleaning up the whole city. As in New York, business would start coming back, then decent middle-class people would start coming back to work in those businesses, and gradually the overall quality of life would improve.

One problem Detroit has that New York didn't have is that Detroit's bread-and-butter--the automobile industry--is declining due to foreign competition. So Detroit also has to start diversifying into other business areas.

The solution
1) End the War on Drugs- It has transformed the inner cities into war zones. Many young black men are in prison for the non-crime of buying and selling drugs.

2) Restore the 2nd Amendment. This will also reduce what crime is left over after number 1.

3) End welfare of all kinds. And no, most black people are not on welfare. Most Americans are on some form of welfare. For example, there is middle class welfare: public schools, Medicare, Social Security, etc.

4)Separate School and State. At a minimum get the Feds and the State Gov't out of the education.

5) There are a lot of other laws that are preventing minorities in the inner city (and everyone else) from starting a business that should be repealed.

What a twisted subculture.
"white b----, white m-----f-----, white c---, white ho." So tell me, is this animalistic behavior or what? Perhaps somebody could shove a .38 down that child's mouth and let him gag on it for a while for speaking to a woman who is trying to teach him or her how to read, write, and make a way in this world. That's just beyond obscene. Whether the kid is white or black doesn't matter., though let's be honest -- this type of conduct is more prevalent in predominately African American school districts. The white liberal establishment is almost as much to blame as the black community for tolerating this sort of stuff. But only "almost as much to blame," because nobody is forcing the high illegitimacy rates or run to the welfare offices. How sad, this minority group had so much to offer this country. Even just becoming "normal" citizens would have been respected. Now it is this victimization, ethnic segregation, cultural degeneracy thing with so many. Not all, not even a majority -- but a LARGE minority. I don't know that I even care anymore.

The Problem with Vouchers
Yes, I suppose if we took government out of voucher proposals, it would work. But people who call for vouchers are not asking to get government out of the funding of education, that they want, like all who break the X Commandment (and the VIII).

So, were we to go along the path described, that would work. But, as I said, the voucher plan most people think of when the word pops up in conversation is simply a means by which government would take control of all forms of education, and, eventually destroy or outlaw them. All in the (legitimate) name of accountability. After all, it would still be taxpayer (meaning stolen fair and square) money.

I hope that's not what we mean by "education reform".

Mohammed Atta had a strict religious education.

What kind of person did he turn out to be?

I Agree Vouchers Have Problems
But I think they're a good step in the right direction, that being the creation of real competition in the public schools. Given that a complete and total privatization is probably going to be politically impossible.

Hello, Gestell
Thank you for your commentary.

Your suspicion is correct: lots of conservatives think this, and many do say it.

You do know that no one said a word about the right to vote, yes?

"And I still don't think conservatism has all the answers." I don't think you'll find many Conservatives that would claim that. I do note that -- in this case -- you seem to be about 85% in agreement with us, so we can't be completely clueless, right?

;^)

People Must Fix School Problems
We the people (voters) must step up and demand that no more will we accept the following:
1. Self-esteem grades
2. Politically correct discipline
3. Reduced expections
4. Poorly trained and educated teachers
5. Money to pay adminstrative staff rather than funding the classroom.
6. Promoting political topics in the classroom

Education is the greatest gift of the present generation to the children. The fate of the human race depends upon this gift.

Root Causes
The complete breakdown in acceptable behavior is not the sole province of any socio-economic group. It is the result of the total abdication of responsibility. Everyone has someone in the role of mother and father; not everyone has parents. Ask Lindsay Lohan and Brittney Spears.
