Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

The Gadsden Flag – perhaps the most-famous of America’s pre-Independence banners (a revised, striped version of which presently flies on all U.S. Navy warships) – may soon be branded a symbol of “extremism.” In fact, based on a May 7 report in World Net Daily and elsewhere, the branding already may have begun.

According to the report: “A Louisiana driver was stopped and detained for having a ‘Don't Tread on Me’ [Gadsden Flag] bumper sticker on his vehicle and warned by a police officer about the ‘subversive’ message it sent, according to the driver's relative.”

The report added “a man identifying himself as a police officer” from the department that allegedly stopped the driver, said records did not substantiate the incident. But, “he suggested it might have involved one of several other agencies that work in the area.”

True or not (and I sincerely hope it’s not), the story is now making the rounds, and it understandably concerns those Americans like myself who are proud of this nation’s rich heritage, noble founders, and standards and colors that have come to symbolize our independence and exceptionalism. We don’t want those colors sullied by rumors and misrepresentations of fact. Nor do we want them hijacked and rebranded as extremist symbols by those who would deny the greatness of our founding fathers and our nation’s remarkable beginnings.

I learned of this Gadsden Flag story on May 9, coincidentally 255 years to the day after the Pennsylvania Gazette published in 1754 what is widely held to be the first American political cartoon: a picture of a snake cut into eight pieces, each piece representing a colony (New England representing one piece of the snake) and the words "JOIN or DIE," which eventually changed to “UNITE or DIE.”

Apparently, Benjamin Franklin – the Gazette's publisher and the cartoonist who drew the snake – was urging the colonies to unite against the French and Indians.

Then in late 1775 – several months after the first shots were fired in the American Revolution – the newly formed Continental Marines (Yes, the predecessors of our future U.S. Marines) adopted the rattlesnake as a symbol and the motto, "DON'T TREAD ON ME." A snake and the motto were painted on the Marines' drums years before the Marine Corps adopted its present motto, Semper Fidelis (Always Faithful).

Soon thereafter, South Carolina Militia Col. (future brigadier general) Christopher Gadsden – a member of the Continental Congress and of the Marine Committee – had the rattlesnake and motto incorporated into a flag which he presented to the Navy, the Marines, as well as to the S.C. Provincial Congress, which recorded in its minutes:

"Col. Gadsden presented to the Congress an elegant standard, such as is to be used by the commander in chief of the American navy; being a yellow field, with a lively representation of a rattlesnake in the middle, in the attitude of going to strike, and these words underneath, 'Don't Tread on Me!'"

A company of militiamen from Culpepper County, Virginia also carried a "DON'T TREAD ON ME" flag, but on a white field, and with the added words, “LIBERTY OR DEATH.”

It was during this same period that Commodore Esek Hopkins directed his ships to fly a “striped jack” with – as some historians suggest – an uncoiled snake and the motto, "DON'T TREAD ON ME."

This flag became known as the first American “Navy Jack.” And on May 31, 2002, the old “Navy Jack” was ordered by the Secretary of the Navy to be flown aboard “all U.S. Navy ships during the Global War on Terrorism.”

Today the old rattlesnake “Navy Jack” flies from my front porch.

Subversive? Hardly.

An unapologetic expression of pride in – and love for – American independence and the kind of defiant, can-do-despite-the-odds courage exhibited throughout history in places with names like Lexington, Yorktown, Fredericksburg, Bastogne, Hue, and Fallujah?

You bet.

Gadsen
I think it is an "in your face" symbol which simply tells people to leave me alone and get out of my way. That is why they don't like it and why it makes so much sense to keep is as a symbol of conservatism. That is all we want. Just leave me alone and stop meddling in other peoples' business to make you feel good and think you know better.

JD
Well put

I'll be flying the Gadsen Flag
...on my Harley at Rolling Thunder in Washington DC in a few weeks. I am looking forward to any objections. I've already studied its history, but appreciate the reminder, thank you.

really
So the evidence here of a trend is that one local police officer may have objected to the bumper sticker, but also might not have?

Usually it takes at least three unverified anecodotes to make a trend story.

to be clear
to be clear, it would be deeply offensive if police officers were harassing people for having bumper stickers with the Gadsen flag on it. But the evidence for this offered here is really paltry.

Police do stupid things
A woman in Alabama was stopped because she used a sticker to cover up "Heart of Dixie" as she thought the phrase racist, others have been stopped for having profane words, others for having the Calvin and Hobbes boy peeing on something (like the Chevy bowtie) and on and on. Cops often get power trips...this is a non-story.

Cops here send out profane
messages to those who attended a tea party. The idiots used official police department letterhead stationary.

The Key Part of This
Smith says "True or not (and I sincerely hope it’s not), the story is now making the rounds..."

It won't matter if it's true, if those who hear it choose to believe it, it will be told as true. It'll become the new "He's an Arab!" or "He wasn't born in Hawaii..." The facts don't matter, what matters is how much people want to believe them.

Mason Williams Knew
The composer of the pop song "Classical Gas" had another song on that album called "The Exciting Accident." The lyrics told of an incident at a store, ending with "This is not a true tale, but who needs truth if it's dull?"

Symbols
JD hit on the real topic here quite nicely. Flags have been a symbol of defiance since the first caveman put the first saber-tooth tiger skin on the end of his spear and waved it around (metaphorically speaking, for the lefties out there). During the War Between the States, the Medal of Honor was given out by the U.S. government for capturing the enemy's battle flags, so potent a symbol they were. If you had his flag, you had his honor. So it is with the left. In order to win the war, they have to discredit, belittle or expropriate every aspect of American heritage, which is why such a seemingly flimsy story takes on a greater meaning.

Paltry or not I am going to fly the flag
I bought the flag yesterday and it will fly in my front yard.

Re: to be clear
Lon says 'it would be deeply offensive if police officers were harassing people for having bumper stickers with the Gadsen flag on it. But the evidence for this offered here is really paltry'.

That's not the point.
The point is, the story has been making the rounds and whether it is true or not it hurts the flag.

Hat tip to Smith who says it best -
'We don’t want those colors sullied by rumors and misrepresentations of fact. Nor do we want them hijacked and rebranded as extremist symbols by those who would deny the greatness of our founding fathers and our nation’s remarkable beginnings'.

What Hurts the Flag
What hurts most is when the people who are associated with the flag, who view themselves as loyal patriots, allow themselves to be tagged as easily duped and complicit in spreading lies.

You see it even in cav vet's post, where he clearly either misses the point or willingly misstates it. It's not the "left" who are excessively worried about this--despite his attempt to spin it that way--this was on World Net Daily, the lowest of the reactionary sludge sites, and the fake story was intended to stir up conservative ire. To the extent that people are "upset" about the false "incident", the folks at WND have succeeded, and the folks who are "upset" have been used and seem none too bright.

I love that flag
And I'm as liberal as they come.

Here's hoping this story is a hoax (as the lack of evidence seems to suggest).

Don't Tread on Me!

Political Correctness
Political correctness and the pervasiveness of "being offended" have been severely overdone to the point of being ridiculous. This is the same stupidity that now says a person can't display a Confederate flag in a parade, even though to many Southerners it means nothing more than pride in their part of the Country.

Fredericksburg...

“An unapologetic expression of pride in – and love for – American independence and the kind of defiant, can-do-despite-the-odds courage exhibited throughout history in places with names like Lexington, Yorktown, Fredericksburg, Bastogne, Hue, and Fallujah?
You bet.” – W. Thomas Smith

In the midst of seemingly uninterrupted Lincoln admiration, we notice that Fredericksburg is included in your list of places where American independence and courage are best exhibited. We give General Lee his due respect and can find no fault with him in his decision to join in the defense of his home state of Virginia. She was well defended that day at Fredericksburg. Both Lee and Jackson routed the Northern invaders.

Re: Fredericksburg
I think its pretty clear Union and Confederate fought valiantly at Fredericksburg

Never apologize
Fly it proudly.

If
this is true I would think of it as an incentive for everyone who loves liberty to have a sticker on their car, just as during the Nazi occupation of either Denmark or Holland when the Jews were forced to wear the yellow star, the king wore it and pretty soon the whole populace wore one.
In fact I think we should do it anyway. We are planning on getting our flag soon.

Jeff..where did that happen. I vaguely remember something about it.

Good article
Disinformation or not, it is hard to overlook the numerous government reports warning of Rightwing Extremists. This shouldn't be a right- or left-wing issue. This should be an American issue, a freedom issue. Millions of Americans have died to protect freedom of speech. That includes sporting the Gadsden flag, Ron Paul bumper stickers, or burning flags.

Having read Smith's article, it becomes clear that - like the Confederate flag - the Gadsden flag represents our country's great heritage, not extremism or supremacism.

Whether or not the story about the bumper sticker from Louisiana is true, time will have to tell. And the author seems to have taken the high road and kept the focus on the flag. But with the government's handling of our freedoms over the past few years and especially the recent months, the trend is not looking good.

Tea Party
It was the West Allis Police Dept. You can link to as copy of the actual letter on WISN 1130 website, then go to Vicki McKenna, then to her links, then scroll down to "Tea Party Hate Mail From West Allis"

Oh that does it!

Reply to ValiantForTruth....

"She was well defended that day at Fredericksburg. Both Lee and Jackson routed the Northern invaders"

She (Pennsylvania) was well defended that day at Gettysburg. Both Meade and Buford routed the Southern invaders.

My own flag
I have been flying the Gadsden flag (yellow version with coiled snake)below my American flag in my front yard since October 2001. Any coincidence there ? (and, no, not the "same flag"...both are replaced annually due to weather damage).
I had heard the same stories back then ... "they're gonna mess with you 'cause it's a militia symbol" and other "they're gonna" stories of dread.

My own flag
I hope this story is a sretch as well. But this story also gives me a reason to now put one on my truck as well

Leftys love their flag too
It has a hammer & sickle on it.

J.B.Books
My Gadsden flag went "up the pole" at the same time, for the same reasons.

I get questions about the Gadsden flag magnet on my Jeep occasionally.

If that happens to me . . .

Somebody is going to die. I am tired of it. I am not going to put up with it any more. PERIOD!!

Let's cut to the chase

This is the United States of America, one nation with a history of advocating freedom, love of God, individual liberty, and distrust of an overbearing government.

We are now engaged in a huge cultural and political war, on our own soil, between citizens who want to keep our traditional strengths and culture, and those who want us to become something else - namely a nanny socialist state with a huge overbearing and intrusive government that will control our daily lives and our futures for us.

This is open warfare within our country - a war started by the communists, progressives, and socialists years ago, and which has always intended to split our country culturally and intellectually as a component of defeating and destroying America.

The Gadsden Flag represents everything the progressives and socialists hate - individual independence, freedom, and responsibility. For socialists, it is impossible to control everybody and their property if everyone tells you to go stick it. It's a problem for them, so the socialists in charge will make the conservatives and the traditionalists the state’s enemy, and then do everything possible to destroy the conservatives, take their property and their freedom of speech, and then run the country as they see fit (as a totalitarian socialist state).

Tough luck anti-American socialists and progressives! We traditionalists and lovers of individual freedoms are not going away, and we are NOT going to buckle down under government pressure - not England's, not France's, not our own. Get used to the idea - we are here to stay. Once tasted, freedom is never forgotten. We’ll be a thorn in your side forever.

This will be a one term (or shorter) usurper socialist party presidency. We’ll also work on Congress, the lawless tyrants who would enslave us through their onerous and unlawful budgets, laws, and programs.

America will return to a lawful republic. Count on it.

Fear
My husband & I went to the April 15th tea party in colonial clothes and fly the don't Tread On Me flag on our home.
I'm a bit afraid since reading this article though as we seem to be the "enemy of the people" here in socialist Santa Cruz, California. A city councilmember held a press conference in front of our family home to say the I am racist because I said there were Latino gangsters selling heroin on the streets of my neighborhood at a small open neighborhood meeting in which I thought I was stating the obvious.

Culture War
Well said, Highlander Juan... we've been in a culture war for half a century, and only just now are we beginning to fight back, We quietly gave away our culture, our tax money, our right to be admitted to colleges based on merit, our places in line for jobs, both in and out of government... all those things and more, to the tail that now wags the American dog.

No more Mr. Nice Guy. The opposition didn't know when to quit pushing, and the sleeping tiger that Admiral Yamamoto once referred to has been awakened, and is in a vicious rage.

Payback is going to be unpleasantly interesting.

Highlander Juan
Nice post.

And for you statists out there: Enjoy your party while you have it.

Re: Lon From PA.
Lon from PA dismisses the story because one incident does not make a trend. I agree. But I have heard many stories recently about similar incidents involving speech, what symbols to display and how one shows their beliefs.

The implication seems to be that we are un-American if we protest the way things are going. How many people got slammed last month for attending the tea parties?

I am fearful folks that up is now down and people are viewed as being treasonous if they don't follow the liberal Democrat line. Stay focused people and pray. I fear we do not have much time to take back our country.

The shot heard round the world
History will repeat it self and there will be civil war in this country again. It might be that having a non-American muslum president will make us like the nations in the middle east with such severe civil unrest. The door will be opened to the anichrist to bring his false peace. One might want to stop and think about that and the direction that we are going just to see that what the bible has said is comming to pass.

Proud Gadsden Flag Flyer!
I currently have two Gadsden flags. The larger one will continue to fly under "Old Glory" and the smaller one will either "fly" inside my home or be attached to my truck. (Depending on my mood and/or current situation.)

Yes, I am a proud, loyal natural born citizen of the United States of America!
Subversive? Never!
Patriot? YES!

This is an excellent article !
This is an excellent article and it's true, the article is "making the rounds". It has been for at least a week.
My husband and I have gotten several emails on it from several friends.
There apparently is more to this than meets the eye.

Joel, that is really funny to imagine.

I'll turn you in, collect the $25m, give it back to you, and then sit back and watch the fun. I expect you would give them a great run for their money, any day.

Nice.

Keep it up as they say.

You are hitting on at least seven of your eight.

I am looking forward to some more pithy posts.
.

The first report of such...
came out of Oklahoma. But why quibble over the number of such incidents, when Janet Napol(eon)itano has come right out and labeled us all as right-wing extremists? What must she think of my "O s**t" bumper sticker?

A Message!
In today's world, a Gadsden Flag might very well read "Don't F _ _ K With Me"

Regardless, our POTUS and all of his little lap dogs would be well served if they heeded either message displayed on that flag.

Thanks, Guys.

I've become an Oath Keeper, and hope you-all have also. I also have been reading a lot recently and have been tracking the progress of Glenn Beck and his gaggle of colleagues. I think Beck and Judge Napolitano have the solution pretty well figured out.

I have to leave now - perhaps we can continue this discussion at a later time.

Pithy enough for you Marine?

Have a good one.

I JUST BOUGHT A GADSEN FLAG
And I plan to fly it along with my American Flag. It will only be taken down when I need it for a Tea Party, or a march on Washington DC, along with my pitchfork. I have never felt the need to become an activist until recently. The things that are happening in this CORRUPT government are getting more scary every day and I will NOT be a victim. They can put me on all the "watch" lists they want, but I am watching them too. And I don't like what I am seeing.

Where to get one...
http://www.gadsdenandculpper.com, or: http://www.dtomstore.com

They have a complete line of Gadsden flag products.

Magnetic ribbons on cars are wildly popular right now. I bought dozens of the "snake ribbons" and hand them out to friends, family and any curious questioners in parking lots. They are quite popular.

We, who work hard to uphold and maintain the spirit on which this country was founded, which I believe to be the majority still, need to pull our heads out of the sand and learn to advertize. The neo-commies have had their way because we have ignored and dismissed them for too long and not kept up with their advertizing tactics.

This is a great advertizing tool to let others know we are out there. The more we can strike up conversations and open the awareness of those who are ambilent to politics and are easily led by 'progressive' propaganda they are constantly bombarded with, the more likely it is we can turn things around.

The flag is a small thing, but displaying it and talking about it can make a huge difference in getting our country back on track in '10 and '12 if we all get involved.

Christopher Gadsden
Christopher would be appalled at what our government is doing. As being the great grandson of Christopher Gadsden, I am all to familiar with the flag and what it stands for but what troubles me, is there any people today that are willing to die for liberty as my great grandfather would have. As many others did, God help us not forget the great sacrifices these men made, and what they stood for!

Spelling
First, I want to say "You tell 'em" about the snake-on-the-flag piece. But I am a stickler on correct spelling, and I believe, if you check it out, that Culpeper, Virginia, does not have a double "p."
