Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

A joint statement issued by Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senator Harry Reid (D-NV), on the evening of President Bush’s State of the Union address, says, “The OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of Americans, MILITARY LEADERS, and a bipartisan coalition in Congress oppose the President's plan to escalate the war.”

Not that the president plans to escalate the war, but instead wants to rework our efforts in Iraq by reinforcing and realigning our ground forces. We’ll save that for another discussion. For now, let’s keep in mind the reference to “overwhelming majority” of “military leaders,” because it’s clever how they included “military leaders” in the list without any supporting facts that an “overwhelming majority” of those leaders oppose any plan.

Surely it was obvious to Pelosi, Reid, and their writers that by placing the term second in the series, it could easily be perceived by readers that an “overwhelming majority” of “military leaders” oppose a plan by the president. Yet if called to present hard numbers to support the so-called “overwhelming majority,” Pelosi and Reid could easily deny they were referring to “military leaders,” only to “Americans.” Oh so slick.

Then there was Senator Jim Webb (D-VA) who, in his televised rebuttal to the president’s address, said, the MAJORITY of OUR MILITARY “no longer supports the way this war is being fought.” Webb’s comments were probably based on a recent poll of active-duty subscribers to the independent Military Times newspapers.

But in the comments by both Webb and the Nan-Harry tagteam, a definite “majority” is both flat wrong and a dangerous attempt to sway the thinking – thus undermine the morale – of our combat forces in the field.

Of course, this is nothing new: Recent Pelosi soundbites include such gems as “there is no success …” and “The policy and the practice is not making the American people safer … .” Then there is Reid’s latest line before the National Press Club: “The United States forces have been given an impossible mission;” and my favorite posturing-snippet from the Nan-Harry tagteam which said, “Congress will not ignore this president’s failed policy.” (Don’t forget: Though Dems seem to love to posture after their own election victories, many of them damned the remarkable Iraqi elections with cynical, faint praise.)

Yet the Dems still continue to qualify many of their statements with something along the lines of “but we support the troops.”

How can anyone honestly say they support the troops when they make false claims that a majority of both military leaders and the rank-and-file no longer support what their organization is doing, particularly when the majority does?

Testifying before the House Armed Services Committee on Thursday, Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James T. Conway said, “Though the troops in the operating forces are being pushed hard by the operational tempo and the frequency of deployments, morale has never been higher, because they believe they are making a difference.” Continued...

Everyone supports the troops

A few points...
I think Smith makes an interesting point about the inflammatory headline of Reid and Pelosi that allows a different interpretation based on grammar if they are ever questioned on the "majority of, military leaders" association that many less informed people will make. I am referring to “The OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of Americans, MILITARY LEADERS, and a bipartisan coalition in Congress oppose the President's plan to escalate the war.” The reason I think it is interesting is because I believe that James Webb did the exact same thing when he said "the MAJORITY of OUR MILITARY “no longer supports the way this war is being fought.”" I think it is interesting because I imagine that this statement could be 100% accurate. I would wager that the majority of our Military would love to take the gloves off and kick the living crap out of the insurgents and the sectarian troublemakers, starting with Al Sadr. In that regard, Webb's statement could be spot on.

As for retired Military commanders making critical comments regarding the fighting of this war, this is a result of the real time, 24 hour news coverage. It is instantaneous to have immediate feedback on what could be perceived as a failure or miscalculation of the current command or CIC. Petreuas (sp) takes over as one of the Military's best minds on counterinsurgency, asking for the troop increase, and before the plan is even unveiled it is criticized soundly by the Left and even by some on the Right, who are more concerned with their political futures than anything else. If we fought WWII today, we absolutely would have lost that war, no doubt about it. Most Americans have no clue of the price that was paid in men and equipment throughout countless battles in that war, and there were plenty of mistakes made. Take for example the unopposed landing at Anzio beach where a hesitant American commander failed to advance his forces to the high ground allowing the Germans to reinforce to that point. The end result? 59,000 American casualties over a 5 month period as the Germans kept the GIs pinned down from January through May, on the fricking beach. Think how the anti war crowd of today would crow with disdain about such results of a relatively inconsequential battle in that war!

Once again the Dems would be wise to listen to Joe Lieberman who at least says to give the plan a chance for success. Instead they want to pass a meaningless resolution to further undermine our troops efforts.

And I am convinced that we are still not getting the full picture of Iraq, nor the conditions on the ground through our news sources, and definitely not our politicians. If Iraq is the size of California, then most of the issues are taking place in a place like LA, while the rest of the state is stable. It is not the whole country, but you would never know that from the MSM.
