Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

It is only four months into 2008, but the presidential campaign -- already too long and nasty -- is still a long way from over. And the casualties are mounting.

First, George Bush’s popularity remains dismal -- even though some of the complaints about his first term have gone by the wayside. The French and German governments are now staunchly pro-American. Violence in Iraq is still way down from a year ago. America has been free from a terrorist attack since 9/11.

No matter. Nothing has seemed to help the president. His approval rating stays at, or sinks below, 30 percent.

Why? The current gloomy economic news and the continuing human and financial costs of Afghanistan and Iraq explain a lot. But another reason is this present election cycle. For the first time in nearly six decades, no incumbent president or vice president is daily hammering back in defense of the recent four years.

We expect Democratic opponents Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton to trash an incumbent Republican president. But Republican nominee John McCain seldom endorses anything about the two Bush terms.

Again, the last time America witnessed anything similar was when Harry Truman left office with a 22 percent approval rating -- under furious attack by Republican candidate Dwight Eisenhower and yet shunned by his own party's nominee, the maverick Adlai Stevenson, who had not been part of the Truman administration.

If the current president hasn't been helped by the present campaign, look what's it's done to his predecessor. The Clinton legacy is wrecked. Left-wing bloggers, liberal columnists and some Democratic politicians now despise Bill and Hillary Clinton -- even more than did "the vast right-wing conspiracy" of the 1990s.

A furious Hillary keeps charging the media with the same sort of bias that the Republicans used to routinely claim always favored her husband. Apparently the left has become infatuated with Barack Obama and does not want another eight years of the once-iconic Clintons -- especially after their use of the race card, the hardball politics and Hillary's chronic exaggeration and misstatements.

Globetrotting Bill Clinton spent seven years crafting a legacy as a post-partisan senior statesman. Now he's thrown that away by devolving into a political henchman assigned to take down the Democratic Party's first serious African-American candidate.

Whatever the final result of the 2008 campaign, the image of an above-the-fray Bill is no more -- shattered somewhere between the disclosure of the $109 million Clinton tax returns and his finger-shaking lectures to the press about its supposed unfairness to his wife. Democrats once were enchanted that their party might usher in the nation's first woman president. Now many of them fear Hillary is a bothersome obstacle in the way of an even more hip and novel breakthrough candidate.

Racial relations also soured from the campaign. Obama promised to be our post-racial healer. But so far, even if it weren't his intent, he is proving the most racially contentious candidate in recent American history.

African-Americans still line up behind Obama, even as whites keep voting in large majorities for Clinton.

The more Obama’s former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, keeps sounding unhinged, the more Obama can't quite free himself from this hateful albatross.

And when Obama talks down about middle America's fondness for religion and guns; or suggests that small-town America is "anti-immigrant" and "clings" to "antipathy to people who aren't like them;" or quips about the "typical white person," he only increases racial polarization -- cementing the image of someone who sees America in terms of "they," not "us."

The Bush and Clinton legacies, Obama's "new" politics and race relations are all casualties of a wide-open election without incumbents. But the greatest casualty has been our inability to figure how to deal with looming crises.

So far we haven't heard specific workable proposals from the candidates about how exactly they would solve energy dependence, soaring food prices, illegal immigration or outdated farm subsidies.

There has been no new solution offered about the looming Social Security crack-up. Few candidates have expressed novel ideas of stopping staggering deficits or bulking up a sinking dollar -- much less exactly the sacrifices necessary on all our parts to restore American financial solvency. No one has offered a better way of dealing with an ascendant but lawless China, an unhinged Iran or the ongoing war against Islamic extremism.

In 2008, everything and everyone has fallen victim to a nasty campaign -- except America's nastiest problems.

"Killer
You have no idea what hardship is...Go to Africa, see hardship. Go to Mexico..."

Been to both, done that. Also Costa Rica and Haiti (now there's a nasty place!).

Go easy on killer, it's his strange computer wiring - he types with a USB cable in his ear. Everytime he pushes the spacebar, the space goes into his head.

eastlake joe
I think no matter how he loses,it will be all about race for some people.it is sad that the first chance for a person of color to be president is so flawed.

His color is the least of my worries about him,but his supporters will not see it like that.

Rowly
I agree that it will be bad if she wins the nomination and he loses, but what will happen if he wins the nomination but loses the election to McCain? Or even worse if he wins and somebody is insane enough to pull a JFK on him. There will be blood in the streets bet on it!

OPERATION CHAOS
Barack Obama reminds me of an actor on a static stage reciting every line perfectly until something or someone else moves.

wildwest and eastlake joe
wildwest...I meant to tell you to hit the ENTER key twice.I said space bar,but meant ENTER.That will space your paragraphs.Sorry.

Joe.. I think all three candidates have so much baggage it will be a dirty campaign. If Hillary wins,we may have a race war.Burnings,riots,etc.I don't think it will settle down for a while,if she wins and Obama loses.

wildwest..So many Republican congresspeople have retired,I don't see how we can gain any seats.Congress'popularity is in the teens.Much worse than Bush's.They should not have retired now and maybe we could have added a few in November. Not much chance, now.

Wildwest
You think the mud is slinging now? wait till after the dem choice is made. We will be wading in mud up to our ears. They have a lot of things on B.O. and HRC that haven't come out yet. Some of this mud is going to hurt both. I'll be ready to put money on it. The republican candidate is taking it too easy. McCain is just sitting back waiting with the big guns like the commitee tells him to. Take my word for it. Every time either one is hit, I'm going to laugh my head off.

rowly
At this point in time the circular firing squad the dims are employing over their weakened candiadtates the oblahma and the missus clinton can be likewise used to attack congress as well. The do nothing and worsten the status quo dims under reid and pelosi need to headline the repubs attack. Most seats in congress are held with razor thin majorities. Linking the failed congress to the dims leadership and broken promises is quite possibly the best route to getting rid of the dims congressional louts. The dims in congress has no legislative record of accomplishment to run on but the repbus are going to have to smarten up and offer concrete proposals to deal with the big issues of a budget out of control, dealing with the illegals, ending all pork not the 1 year hisatus the dims propose and a no nonsense plan for saving social security. Personalitities are useless except at the local level. Attacking failed policy and inaction is the best route to end the failed pelosi/reid terms in office.

Killer
No you may not call me grandma. That is a term of endearment only used by people who mean it!!

Besides grandmas' are in a bad situation with you liberals, you so readily throw them under the bus to make a point!!

Hey ex....
How'd you get that word through? Every time I use it they stop it. Also, you have to understand killer is a "poet". They do things different. In this case different is spelled s-t-u-p-i-d.

eastlake joe
His candidacy may not matter anymore, but his ideas definitely do. He hearkened back to the true conservative roots of the Republican party that we have all but abandoned. We should strongly consider his policies and look to elect congressmen and senators who represent true conservative values of limited government, fiscal responsibility, and adherence to the Constitution.

Also, despite what the press would have you believe, the nomination of McCain is not a 100% certainty even now. He does not have enough committed delegates to secure the nomination, and there are motions around the country by state delegates toward a vote against McCain. The Republican convention could be very interesting this year.

Khomar
While I agree that even he would be better than Mccain, He hasn't a rats @$$ chance of winning. so talking about him at this time doesn't accomplish anything.

One Candidate Has
"There has been no new solution offered about the looming Social Security crack-up. Few candidates have expressed novel ideas of stopping staggering deficits or bulking up a sinking dollar -- much less exactly the sacrifices necessary on all our parts to restore American financial solvency. No one has offered a better way of dealing with an ascendant but lawless China, an unhinged Iran or the ongoing war against Islamic extremism."

One Presidential candidate HAS addressed these issues. He has offered to save Social Security by cutting spending on unnecessary overseas deployment of our troops to places like Germany and South Korea. He has offered to save the dollar by returning to a gold standard and phasing out the Federal Reserve. He has talked specifically about what will be involved to cut spending and save our nation's debt problems. His policies would end our dependence on China's loans as well as offering a new strategy for the Middle East.

This man predicted the economic catastrophe's that we see today. He warned us about the inflation being created by the Federal Reserve. He warned us of the dangers of invading Iraq before we even set foot on their soil. He has voted consistently for balanced budgets and living within our means. He put his money where his mouth is by rejecting the congressional pension program.

His name? You know who I am talking about. His name is Ron Paul.

Rob
My facade is, that of a "POET".All poets are disgruntled souls. It is the "POET", that must state the obvious "Failures" of Humanity.I am most privileged, but there are others, who are NOT.I speak for them!!!

Rob
"By the way, who exactly are these people who control America?? I haven't had the pleasure. I guess they decided to leave me alone."

Well, you could start with the mainstream media. Over 90% of the media in America (print, TV, etc.) is owned by six different individuals. It is very easy to manipulate a people if you control all of the information they receive.

Next, you can look at the central bankers that form the Federal Reserve. These individuals control America's money supply which gives them the ability to manipulate our markets. If they are granted the oversight powers they are currently seeking, they will gain even more control over our entire economy. The JP Morgan buy out of Bears and Stearns was a power grab by the "insiders" in the market (those who have access to credit directly from the reserve) to remove the competition from the outsiders (those who don't).

Lastly, you may need to start looking to China soon. As the Bible says, the borrower is the servant of the lender, and China currently lends us more money than any other country. We have been selling out our country all in the name of cheap big screen TVs.

nanna
May I, just call you "Grandma"?I am a poet,at times, and this is a great time for the line I referenced. You will never see the entire poem, but trust me, it has a proper "Context".As for all the "KIND" things you had to say.Well!!!My Grandma, would have said more.

ICE
Looks like one branch of the gov is working at least in mentor ohio. ICE raided a restaurant in Mentor Ohio yesterday and took away 10 illegals and at the same time raided something like 7 or 8 others. It seems that the owners of the chain are employing illegals and the "poor little misdirected individuals" were being taken advantage of. (i.e. low wages and long hours)
Well, no more for them at least. Three cheers for ICE.

killer Campaign boutte apollo maverick
The leftists and their cronies (however kudos to ABC for the tough questions last night)
have been exposed in this tortuous season with its worthless candidates. I have come to gain a little more respect for McCain in his attempts to come to the middle - from the left. Now we have plenty of time to focus on the real election. Representatives that have to be shown that incumbancy is a privilege not a right. We need a contract on specific tax, spend and bureaucracy clean-up or you lose. The elitist black man that is "down for the struggle" and Hi-liar-y will lose. Even die hard commie dim kooks can figure that out. So know it is up to us to get a Congress that will drag McCain kicking and screaming to conservatism.

The dims tried to talk the economy into a recession in 02, 04 & 06. Well guess what? They won and we now are in recession in 08. Let's hear the libs explain that one.

Elections should be like Grt. Brti.
7 weeks and vote.

But, the length of this primary season has had a chance to reveal Obama as more of a do-nothing, know-nothing, race-baiter himself than the MSM press would have allowed. They could easliy have found Rev. Wright's rants and Rezko's money manipulation and the other time bombs lurking near the starry glow of Obama's campaign.

And it offered hope to Dems. who didn't want another Clinton administration an escape route, altho' now maybe they will need an escape from Obama.

And, lastly, the slow drip of the primaries gave McCain a chance to recover from last summer's doldrums and secure the Rep. nomination.

As to why we haven't produced anyone with miracle cures for national problems: THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IN THE CONSTITUTION WAS NOT DESIGNED TO INITIATE AND FIX NATIONAL PROBLEMS.

The Const. does not include education, medicine, Social Security, privacy, income taxes, marriage, or housing in it. The 10th Amend. says those things not ennumerated here fall to the states.

Since FDR, the media have looked to 1) the overburdened pub. school system and/or 2) a federal nanny state to save people from their own personal mistakes, bad habits, losses, and failures.

No pres. or any one institution can solve everyone else' individual problems. And Mr. Obama certainly can't. He's never even held a meeting of the one sub-committee he chairs in the Seante, after four years. What qualifies him to be pres. is an unsolved mystery.

Why?
VDH -
"But Republican nominee John McCain seldom endorses anything about the two Bush terms."

Why would John McCain endorse *anything* from the last 8 years?

Isn't he the anointed and much lauded 'maverick'?

Isn't it the very essence of being a 'maverick' to eschew teamwork?

If he stooped to being a team player, how could he possibly stand out from the rest of the Republican nominees?

What's in it for him?

New Parody
my blog! "Angst for the Centuries" a la Bob Hope! Enjoy!

Thank you, nanna
for your post to 'killer', I'm not sure that I could have done any better.

Killer
By all means, leave. How in the world can you live with such fear all the time. I mean some nasty white person or brown person, or anything in between might attack you at any moment. I mean the whole country hates you, how can you live here? And half of Barak Obama hates you, he's half white!! I know you can't get work, or be served in a restaurant, or find a place to live, or go to school, or voice your opinion about anything.
How can you hide from a whole country Killer? Will you be able to sneak out of the country ?? It might be hard with the whole country out to get you.
You stupid Simpleton. Do you have any idea just how totally ignorant you sound??? People like you make me sick, your constant whining..You have no idea what hardship is you bafoon!! Go to Africa, see hardship. Go to Mexico, and see why they are trying to run for the border. Go to Cuba and speak out your grievances!!

Benehogan
Thanks! Now I'll have that picture in my head all day. I'll be lucky if I don't go insane!!!!!

NO GO TO B.O.! HRC AIN"T THE ONE TO BE !!!!!!

Rob
Voters are not ORGANIZED.The PEOPLE,who CONTROL AMERICA, ARE.The world was waiting and so was I. I am a Black man, living in a COUNTRY,that "HATES" my "GUTS".Mr.Obama is now understanding those WORDS!!!GOOD...

Length of Campaigns (Continued)
...and I forget to mention that the party debates served as an excellent platform to relentlessly attack President Bush for free, as the debates were obviously contrived news events.

Length of the Campaigns
To the best of my memory, what happened in 2003 was pivotal in how Presidential campaigns really lengthened. In early 2003 the Democratics started their cast of thousands and frequent Democratic Presidential Debates that sucked up the airwaves. And what with so many candidates, more to comment about (so more employment for pundits), and more full-time in between elections campaign jobs for "professional" electioneers. Now we have a veritable full-time industry focused on getting elected, but who are bereft of genuine ideas and skills to govern and accomplish real both bipartisan and majority citizen supported change. Once elected the only skill they skillfully exercise is spinning, to set themselves up for the next - you guessed it - election. Sorry.

The Biggest Casualty
Of this Election Cycle has been THE TRUTH.

MrRoy
I agree with much of your post. The problem is,a good prospect for us conservatives cannot get elected.Too much harm has been done and we have given up too much.

Too many people have gotten fat and lazy. They like what they have as long as it comes easy to them. They won't work for a candidate, heck, they won't even drive to the polls to vote. All they care about is "three hots and a cot".

I agree with you about Reagan making us feel good about who we were.Ridiculed though,by many.Even after years of scrutiny, his reputation is still pretty good. That can't be said about some others.

I agree JFK made a good speech, but was not a very good president,in my opinion. He did have a good speechwriter, though.I can't think of anything else he did that was momentuos.Maybe if he had lived,he could have been better.

Obama has a good speech writer, too. As long as he stays on message,he's pretty good.He gets in trouble, though when he says what he really thinks. He needs his telepromter to stay out of trouble.

It will get dirtier.
It depends upon your definition of dirt.

Bill and Hill will release a video of them doing it to prove that they still do and that Hill has a release for all her tension and frustrations. She will play herself in the video. She will be on top.

The next week BO will top it with videos of he and his wife, some going back 10 years.

The Clinton's will have no old tapes, advantage Obama.

The Obama's will be in different positions, BO will say he is a master of change.

APOLLO

.....I agree ...GW has done as much harm to the Republican Party as Nixon did in his day ...the problem is that the RNC hasn't figured that out yet ...

.....The only saving grace for the GOP is that the Demoboobs have nominated two extreme Left Wing Radicals and all McCain has to do to win is to point that out ...if McCain is smart he will put as much distance between himself and Bush as possible .....COLOSSUS

Casualties of the Campaign
If I sense the feeling of the American people right, these are the problems we have:

We at one time were the industrial nation of the world; ie Detroit used to be the greatest in making cars and trucks. No longer. We've given that to the Japanees, South Koreans and others.

We used to be the business capital of the world. No longer thanks to outsourcing.

We used to energy suggicient. But now, we've become dependent on foreign oil.

We used to have a balanced budget. No longer. We are now the biggest debter nation in the world.

Yet, our greatest problem is that we have no candidate that can call our nation back to greatness. We sorely need a JFK or Reagan who makes us feel honored to be Americans.

Make no bones about it. There are a lot of people in this world that hate America; either Muslim extremists and even native born whitewashed liberals.

America faces it's most difficult hour. It's important that we come out victorious, as we are the last bastian of freedom on this planet.

Obama/Billary character
I wonder, as one of the writers above, why in a country this large; a country founded on the principal of government of the people and by the people why we have produced three unqualified candidates. We have two extremely prolific liars, and three amnesty loving characters to choose from.

The two Dem candidates are socialist/marxist - the problem is that calls for you to spread your earnings around for those who don't have - Health care for everyone? Higher taxes in a time of a recession? When people are already losing their jobs? The government has never run anything well! Post office? Veterans administration? Education is declining in this country despite all the money thrown at it!

Because of current corrupt politicians (on both sides of the isle) the working class of this country is spending over 338 billion dollars a year supporting illegal aliens! Why? Our wonderful elected officials pander to big business and fraudulent votes.

Come on! Wake up! Until the day we take back our country as citizens (regardless of party) and vote the B___tards out - we will lose our freedom - Until we nix the corrupt and lying media and the two parties and find someone who is a decent, honest person who believes in the constitution and the Bill of Rights, our children will inherit a socialist/marxist country. The elected officials we have in office today do not care about you, citizen - they care about themselves - they want power - they are greedy!

I don't understand anyone who follows Obama, or Hillary - why do you want consumate liars to head up this country? If they lie about one thing - they will lie about another. The Clintons have lied for so long they are simply unable to seperate truth from fiction!

If Hillary is elected - hide the silverware. They already took some of the furniture!

KILLER

.....You are probably the biggest "racist" on this post ...

.....Obama is being rejected because of his radical left wing ideas ...if he was as Conservative as Thomas Sowell, I would vote for him ...

.....The problem is that 90% of blacks would not vote for Sowell because they consider him a "Tom" and a sell-out ...

.....If Blacks would wean themselves off the Democrat Plantation and the Federal teat and support Conservative ideas ...the odds of having a Black President would be greatly increased ...

.....Go to Star Parkers website http://www.urbancure.org and educate yourself ...Star is trying to bring black Conservatives into the Republican Party .....COLOSSUS

Truman was Hated For a Reason
Hanson wrote:

"Again, the last time America witnessed anything similar was when Harry Truman left office with a 22 percent approval rating..."

That's because Truman was just as bad a president as Bush. Truman, like Bush, thought that freedom was the first thing to sacrifice in any struggle. He wanted to conscript striking workers into the army if they didn't return to work. Truman's economic policies always increased the extent of government regulation.

Bush is hated for the same reason that Truman was hated - tyranny coupled with incompetence.

Bush's political cowardice on oil drilling, gun rights, economic bailouts and now anthropogenic global warming has made Obama possible, indeed has made Obama inevitable.

Until the Republican party can renounce Bush and condemn his hideously wrong headed presidency, they had better get used to losing.

WHAT CAMPAIGN?

.....I tuned out months ago when Mac became the GOP nominee ...wake me up in November.....COLOSSUS

Victor
The "Greatest" casualty of this campaign season, has only recently began to show it's face. The entire "Racist" regime of America, is now making a concerted effort, to stop Mr.Obama at Pennsylvania. The fear, that he could beat Mr.McCain; has "Avalanched" into a hailstorm of controversy, buried in "Trivial" issues. The "World" will now know how America works. There was never any "Intent" of a fair election, anyone can win. But,now that things appear to be out of control, the aspects which control America's image and power, are pulling the "PLUG" on the fairness approach. The American "IMAGE" is white and that Image must be "PRESERVED".CASUALTY is that right word, you simply mis-applied it...

Boutton holing conservatives
Boutte-hole
again with the naysaying and negativism? You must have ADD and prefer to dine out at Mickey D's where you can have it your way in 5 minutes. Nothing worth doing was ever easy, except perhaps for the women you've dated...By the way, please exit stage left to the daily Kos, they're waitng for your America-bashing rhetoric there.

We are all rather weary
of this campaign and wonder if the participants should be getting back to their real jobs as senators. However, with the media love affair with Obama, the true Obama would never have come to light had the campaign not run so long. Thank you Rush for Operation Chaos.

Jerseyvet - Gotta read Mencken
--
Asks Jerseyvet:

"Who do we blame for the inability of a nation of 300 million unable to produce one viable, experienced candidate for president?"

Commented H.L. Mencken (writing about the presidency in his own era):

"Democracy is that system of government under which the people, having 60,000,000 native-born adult whites to choose from, including thousands who are handsome and many who are wise, pick out a Coolidge to be head of state. It is as if a hungry man, set before a banquet prepared by master cooks and covering a table an acre in area, should turn his back upon the feast and stay his stomach by catching and eating flies."

Now, of course, we include Barack Hussein, who is "native-born" and *half* white (why is this fact so thoroughly suppressed?), but no more palatable for the hybrid vigor he might arguably be bringing to the table.

--

Too Long and Too Expensive
Limit the campaigns to 60 days, give the media a huge check to subsidize the shortened time period, and eliminate the use of race, poverty, religion or guns as campaign issues. Institute and "land travel only" policy, no flying to limit the speech pain we all now endure. As a final act of goodwill burn to the ground all the Ivy League schools and imprison their Communist faculties (in a couple decades we will have normal people running for office).

232 years as a republic
and these three clowns are the best we can do? I'm relieved, in a way, that I don't have much time left on this planet. I fear for the future of this nation.

None of the Above
There should be another line on all the ballots: "None of the above."

Who do we blame for the inability of a nation of 300 million unable to produce one viable, experienced candidate for president?

Don't cling to your "bitter" feelings
Relax, sit back and have a glass of wine. Sounds like there's a lot of frustration and bitter feelings over the Democrat candidates. It's true President Bush is given credit for nothing. Not even John McCain mentions President Bush. There's a good reason for that. Every time Obama and Hillary opens their mouths, they both repeat the same things about McCain. Do we want four more years of the Bush policies. Thats what we're going to get if we elect John McCain. It's understandable why McCain won't give President Bush credit for nothing other then the war in Iraq. McCains not about to let his campaign be linked to President Bush approval ratings. McCains trying to stay away from explaining the Bush policies, the same way Obama is trying to stay away from explaining the Reverend Wrights tapes. They both want to have a campaign like Hillary, she doesn't have to explain anything, especially about her constant lying

"too long and nasty"
Much too long. It seemed to have started in 2000. The benefit is that it has finally smoked out the Clintons & Obama. But this is very tedious. I'm near the point of thinking we had it much better when old guys in smoke-filled rooms did the dirty work behind closed doors.

Robert
Robert sorry, I know you live to hate, so I just had to beat you to the punch on this column, even though I know you have nothing better to do that lurk on a branch like the vulture you are, waiting to pounce. Too bad sucker, all you have is hate. Hate George all you want. He is not running and in fact is laughing at idiots like you.
