Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

In the last few years, it has become popular to say that history is determined largely by sweeping inanimate forces of technology, the environment, gender, class or race. We play down the role of individuals — as if the notion that one person can shape history is old-fashioned. But that’s hardly the case.

Take Nicolas Sarkozy, the new president of France. For 60 years, the power of the state in France had steadily increased. Government workers were handed lavish entitlements and retirement packages while French competitiveness diminished in a new globalized world.

Abroad, traditional French foreign policy cynically tried to have it both ways: staying within the protection of the Western democratic alliance but at the same time opportunistically backbiting the United States to gain special commercial and diplomatic favor with authoritarian governments in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

But this spring, a reformer arrived on the scene with visions of France as a world diplomatic player that would be known for its principled behavior and defense of Western values.

Sarkozy almost single-handedly has restored France’s friendship with the United States, begun to reform the economy at home and sought to bring back French entrepreneurship and creativity critical for a free, expansive economy.

The more the unions, the French intellectual elite and entrenched socialists slur Sarkozy as a reactionary and American puppet, the more he has vowed that he won’t relent until a reformed France can recapture its former commercial and geopolitical prominence.

Sarkozy isn’t the only one defying the odds and questioning conventional wisdom.

By early 2007, critics swore that the American effort in Iraq was doomed and the war lost. But Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander there, outlined a different, risky path of sending more Americans into Iraqi communities while radically changing tactics to ensure better security.

In response, prominent members of Congress suggested that his testimony about the surge’s good progress was neither candid nor credible (“creative statistics,” a “Petraeus village,” “facade,” “fiction,” and “a suspension of disbelief.”)

No matter. He kept with the surge strategy when casualties spiked as Americans took the offensive against al-Qaida and reclaimed urban centers. The verdict is still out on whether the new calm and optimism in Iraq will prove permanent. But the highest compliment now given to Gen. Petraeus is the growing consensus that if he cannot secure Iraq, then there is no other military commander around who can.

Shaping history in a different, more subtle way is Ayaan Hirsi Ali, the Somali-born Dutch feminist and politician.

She grew up a Muslim, but ultimately rebelled at the fundamentalist practice of arranged marriage and gender apartheid — and the threats directed toward anyone who questioned such seventh-century intolerance.

When Westerners, especially conservatives, criticize radical Islam on these grounds, they are often libeled as Islamophobes or written off as illiberal. But Hirsi Ali has shown the world that a liberal woman can teach us first-hand about Islamic extremists — their intolerance of religious diversity, subjugation of women, and bullying of moderate Muslims in their midst.

Hirsi Ali has been attacked from every direction, and yet still won’t keep quiet. Traditional Middle East fundamentalists, of course, have tried to bully and threaten her. But many secular, liberal Dutch haven’t been much better. At first, they thought that this third-world celebrity fit their ideal of the black emancipated feminist. Now, even as she’s damned by radical Islamists for being Westernized, she’s equally damned by liberals in her country and elsewhere for acting as if she were some conservative cheerleader of Western values.

Hirsi Ali demands from Muslims the same scrutiny of their religious brethren as other religions do of their own. Theo van Gogh, director of “Submission,” a documentary film about women in Islam that Hirsi Ali wrote, was murdered by an Islamic terrorist. Yet Ali has not let threats on her own life impede her mission.

What do all these mavericks who have changed the status quo have in common? First, they not only followed their beliefs with action, but also were willing to endure the inevitable criticism to follow. Second, although they have strong beliefs, none are overtly partisan; all instead seek a common good.

The conservative Sarkozy appointed a socialist as his foreign minister. To this day, partisans can’t figure out whether Gen. Petraeus is a Republican or Democrat. Hirsi Ali wants equality for women and greater tolerance of diverse opinion in the Muslim world — and thereby a better understanding between the West and Islam.

Fearless iconoclasts like these three really can make an enormous difference. They remind us that history is not faceless, but can still be changed by just a few brave people after all.

Excellent
Well written column. If MLK were alive, he would have more in common with Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, and Clarence Thomas than the likes of Jackson, Sharpton, or dare I say, the democratic party.

While the adults are trying to control islamic fascism from the likes of bin Laden, Amhidinejihad (sic), Nasrallah, and the Hamas pukes while simultaneously trying to keep government from ballooning out of sight and maintaining some semblance of decorum in social affairs and protecting our liberty, a very liberal value, the kids are running around screaming about global warmism and sympathizing with our enemies and trying to hold together the motliest collection of fringe groups politics has ever seen. The barbarians could be at the gate and many would still see gay marriage or protecting some rare species of rodent as more important.

Not all Gen Petraeus

This was all started and in progress under GEN Casey. The predecessor of Gen. Petraeus. Not to denigrate Gen. Petraeus who is a brilliant man and motivational speaker. I had the privalege of sitting on his morning meetings for a month btween mid Sep and Mid Oct of this year and the man is fascinating to listen to. At a recent re-enlistment of over 280 soldiers his speech to us was incredibly inspiring and motivational.

I have worked with Gen Casey when he was an assistant Division Commander in Bosnia, Division Commander in Kosovo and now again twice served under him while he was Forces Commander over here in Iraq. He is a straight shooter with an excellent grasp of the politics of peace keeping.

Also General (retired) Abizaid was one of the Army's brightest individuals on Islamic affairs and culture. He was fluent in the language and as CENTCOM commander played a key role in shapping the policy that is working so well. he also served with us in Bosnia.

All is not great here. But the plans and goals are comming to fruition and with continued leadership will we come home with pride.

Hitchhiker
I believe loyal Americans, those with common sense, intelligence and conservative values, recognize threats to our country from more than one source. I'm sure you agree.

We know the mindset of Islamic terrorists: Infidels must die.

Along side of that threat, we've tolerated a hugh invasion of Mexicans whose loyalty is to Mexico. The U.S. citizens have to be subsidizing their bills, big time.

Is there a citizen who hasn't experienced having to choose between English or Spanish...on the phone...at an ATM? American companies pandering for Mexican business is my guess. This agenda is a definite threat to our country.

We can't blame homosexuals for the frivolous trashing of marriage; self-centered heterosexuals obviously hold the blame for most of it. Saying that, I know that abuse and infidelity, for two, can be exceptions.

My point is that the divorce rate we're looking at today does negatively affect the well-being of our country, as does the high number of children born of single parents.

Protecting a species of animal goes to the bottom of my priority list. Truthfully it's not even on the list. For anyone concerned about it, they may need an awakening. Unborn human beings have a value way beyond that.

And, we're causing dangerous global warming? Prove it Al.

Contrast
"Sarkozy almost single-handedly has restored France’s friendship with the United States, begun to reform the economy at home and sought to bring back French entrepreneurship and creativity critical for a free, expansive economy."

In stark contrast to the leadership or lack thereof, in America. Get right down to it and are talking about both parties. No leadership.

Freedom of Speech
Off topic from the article but in response to harmony posting above...

In my opinion a business has every right and if it makes economic sense and they are a corporation they have a fiscal RESPONSIBILITY to have English and Spanish (or any other language options).

I believe in the US constitution and it clearly spells out a right to freedom of speech. You can speak gibberish for all I care and if it makes you money that is great.

Now our GOVERNMENT should be in the common language and that is English. Also the primary language in school should be English, although foreign language study is great too.

ILLEGAL ALIENS and open borders must be stopped! Undocumented, non-tax paying illegals, operating outside the law are a threat and must be dealt with. Lots of ways to do it but none will work until we close the border.

I agreed with most of Harmony's points but the language thing when it comes up is silly. If I had a business and could make more money by having Russian or Arabic advertising I would. And trust me, this old Cold War to present Soldier, is no fan of either Extreme Islam or Russia.

Radical Feminist Muslim?
The commentary on the radical feminist Muslim woman should open the eyes of a lot of the men who post here and immediately label any woman who stands up to the patriarchy as a Feminazi, and blames her for everything that is wrong with the world. In the column above about child abuse it did not take too long for someone to jerk this knee and blame the Feminazis for it all -- although the vast majority of child abuse is by men, as is most of the Islamic terrorism. Yet the men blame this on the women.

Alas this has been going on since the Garden of Eden, when Adam hid behind Eves fig leaf skirt and whimpered *She made me do it!*

I have very high respect for a radical feminist woman who will stand up and speak out, not only in the face of threats from radical Islam, but of threats from Western men who think she and all feminists should shut up, go home, and look after the kids.

Good for her and all radical feminist Muslim women everywhere. May they teach their sisters in Western countries how to stand up for themselves in the face of all kinds of threats and abuse.

Tinsldr2: EXCELLENT POSTS! BOTH!

Thank you.

Of course, as I've said over and over again, one gets the most accurate information from those who are on the ground.. in Iraq!

Senators,

"Your vote against an amendment to the Immigration Bill 1348, to make English America's official language is astounding. On D-Day no less when we honor those that sacrificed in order to secure the bedrock character and principles of America . I can only surmise your vote reflects a loyalty to illegal aliens.

"I don't much care where you come from, what your religion is, whether you're black, white or some other color , male or female, democrat, republican or ind ependent, but I do care when you're a United States Senator, representing citizens of America and vote against English as the official language of the United States

"Your vote reflects betrayal, political surrender, violates your pledge of allegiance, dishonors historical principle, rejects patriotism, borders on traitorous action and, in my opinion, makes you unfit to serve as a United States Senator... impeachment, recall, or other appropriate action is warrented.

"Worse, 4 of you voting against English as America 's official language are presidential candidates: Senator Biden, Senator Clinton, Senator Dodd, and Senator Obama.

"Colonel Harry Riley USA ret" 2

"Those 4 Senators vying to lead America but won't or don't have the courage to cast a vote in favor of English as America's official language wh en 91% of American citizens want English officially designated as our language.

"This is the second time in the last several months this list of Senators have disgraced themselves as political hacks... unworthy as Senators and certainly unqualifed to serve as President of the United States.

"If America is as angry as I am, you will realize a back-lash so stunning it will literally rock you out of your panties... and preferably, totally out of the United States Senate.

"The entire immigration bill is a farce... your action only confirms this really isn't about America ; it's about self-serving politics... despicable at best."

Two points:

If Sarkozy were here you would be screaming what a socialist he is.

If the Bush Regime had an inclusive government, they might actually have done well. Instead their litmus test from the start was pure loyalty not competence and definitely not inclusiveness.

Victor you are correct though a few people or even an individual can at least sway history. I just hope that the United States can recover from this fundameantalist conservative debacle caused by the Bush Regime.

Hal, why don't you just admit that you think Hillary is the next coming of the Messiah as far as you are concerned? She will do or say anything to get elected, then rule by whatever the polls say. She has no real core values except to tax and spend, tax, and spend, tax and spend, and blame everyone else for her problems and scandals.

Really? Why do we need laws etc now? Landuage study is great? Is that the best you can do? Bet you wish you knew Arabic or one of the other languages used right now?

"ILLEGAL ALIENS and open borders must be stopped!"

Didn't you people here oppose solving it just recently? Instead of getting a compromise solution that worked you screamed amnesty. Amnesty for a "crime" that ranks less than jay walking in the legal code.

"Undocumented, non-tax paying illegals, operating outside the law are a threat and must be dealt with. Lots of ways to do it but none will work until we close the border."

Why is this a problem after over 200 years?

Lie after lie after lie. Is it macho to be afraid of a woman like a 1900 lady of a mouse?

You silly man we have a person as president now who listens to no one except "maybe" a greater father than his own. He is the worst president in modern history. I thought Carter was bad but this sorry excuse for a president passes or certinly competes with Carter.

I do support Hillary and the lefties hate it too. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/hal-donahue/the-philly-debat e-hillar_b_70672.html but know this moderate Repuiblicans and moderate Democrats support her more and more every day.

I have lived in everyone of those states. A lot of "them" have families that lived there longer than the anglos. You keep hiring "them" and you provide jobs for "them". You let the Bush Regime roll out the job market for "them" NOW you scream? Don't talk to me about accepting responsibility until you accept a huge chunk yourself. Isn't it written somewhere that you reap what you sow?

Oh, yeah, Audi
feminists in America have a lot to complain about, unlike feminists in the Muslim world. Not zero, but certainly miniscule compared to their Muslim sisters.

Isn't it a national security issue that we learn other languages? Have few native speakers in Iraq and Afghanistan sure has been a challenge

Typical Chickenhawk Hanson
"FEARLESS [emphasis mine] iconoclasts like these three really can make an enormous difference. They remind us that history is not faceless, but can still be changed by just a few brave people after all."

Hanson clearly sees himself and others who are pro war as personally BRAVE, strong, tough. Those who are against the war are wusses, cowards, and appeasing nazi germany. Hanson is a war fetishist military historian who has written about the glories of war and how war made civilization great. He doesn't care about the destructive effects of war. To him, war is cool, glorious, exciting and romantic like in the movies. I wish he could see the real thing and learn that nobody hates war more than the soldier. Neo cons like Hanson think the US should start a war with a smaller, weaker country every 10 years or so just to assert our dominance. These armchair warriors are like kids who fantasize about playing soldiers - brave only in their own minds.

Pro war????? Nope too weak call them what they are: War Lovers

You are correct though 99% of the combat vets I now are FAR from pacifists (myself included) but they are anti-war and demand that war be a last resort. What is Teddy Roosevelt's quote about the man in the ring? That applies big time.

Hal Doofus writes:

Alright what are Hillary's core values, other than the government is the solution to everyone's problems? I haven't heard her ever state what she truly believes other than that she wants to spend more and more of the people's money, and that other people are the cause of all her problems.

Hal Doofus, also, writes:

But not recently, but I forget to you recently is 1990 so you have NOT got a clue what the problems are.

Well dear did you see that the Air Force F-15s are grounded again? The entire US military is being worn down look at C ratings of units and especially the equipment levels. Who is going to pay for this abuse and neglect? Who is going to restore all the abused infrastructure and repay all the huge debt you deadbeats ran up? Hillary's core values: Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Restore REAL American values: working together, building for the future, advancement based on merit, equal opportunity for all. Those are the values that formed our nation, conquered the West and won two world wars and the Cold War. All values which are the antithesis of fundamentalist conservatism.

Typical lib, does not have a clue that most people do not own more than one house.

Once again wishful thinking dominates.
Maybe to you the crimes of unlawful employment, identity theft and fraud are equivelant to jay-walking, but I could steer you to several tens of thousands of incarcerated citizens who would beg to differ with you.

The lack of war is not peace.
There has never been peace without countries going to war.
The unwillingness to wage war does not bring peace.
The only realm where peace reigns supreme is the realm of the dead.
Life=Strife.
Struggle to live or you will not, and will achieve peace sooner.
Peace,man.

To Harmony
Where I live I see signs on grocery stores written in Spanish, Arabic, Korean, Polish, Russian, Hindi and Urdu, Vietnamese, Thai, whatever happens to be the language of the neighborhood. What do I know (silly liberal that I am), but I THINK the general idea is that the store-owner wants to attract the trade of people who live around his store and speak that language. Often the products are imported from the country or countries where that language is spoken---labels are in the same language. Since in the United States we enjoy both free speech and a free market, I am confused as to why these business practices are "pandering" or how "this agenda is definitely a threat to our country". In fact, business is booming, and nothing illegal is being sold, just plain old groceries. Is that a bad thing? I think you're being silly.

lilly
When you assist in the creation of culturally segregated neighborhoods, the concept is moot.
It still makes America the salad bowl instead of the melting pot.

Just checking, "pigs are flying...."

outside my house... I actually "agree" with lilly... (ooops, another pig just flew by...)

"Often the products are imported from the country or countries where that language is spoken---labels are in the same language." True!

And that has nothing to do with English being the official language.

It's when the government... be it municipal, county, state, and federal that spend money to print documents in multiple languages that I draw the line.

(And, there goes two or three more pigs....)

halD's real problem, "Delusional"

which is "a fixed false belief that is resistant to reason or confrontation with actual fact."

But, in poor halD's case, he also has resistance to "reality."
