The collapse last week of a comprehensive immigration bill in Congress that called for a huge guest-worker program, fast-track visas and a sort of earned citizenship for illegal aliens has unleashed a backlash against those opponents of it who prefer to close the border first and legislate the details of illegal immigration later.

Washington pundits and Beltway politicians are furious at various critics of the bill, from radio talk show hosts and writers for conservative magazines to frontline congressional representatives and Republican presidential candidates like Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson.

These critics are dubbed cynical nativists - or racists - who have demagogued the issue and scapegoated hardworking illegal aliens. Even President Bush got into the fray when he alleged that conservative obstructionists were somehow not working in America's best interests.

But who's really being cynical when it comes to illegal immigration?

The government?

Of course.

It has caved to pressure groups for over a quarter-century. The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 ensured neither reform nor control. Instead, the law simply resulted in millions entering the United States through blanket amnesty and de facto open borders.

In many cities, current municipal laws bar police officers from turning arrested illegal aliens over to immigration officials. So why should the public believe that the proposed new law, with hundreds of pages of rules and regulations, would trump local obstructionism or effect any real change?

Had the bill passed, could we really have expected that the first impoverished alien unable to pay the fee or fine under its provisions would have been sent summarily home? More likely, he would have appeared on the 6 o'clock news as a victim of American mean-spiritedness and racism - and thereby instead won a reprieve or an outright apology.

Congressional supporters of the present legislation are themselves often engaging in politics of the most cynical kind. Rare "bipartisan" cooperation on the bill, which brought Sen. Trent Lott from Mississippi to the side of Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy, is hardly statesmanship or a sudden outbreak of civic virtue. Rather, it is a new public face to the old alliance between profit-minded employers (and those who represent their interests) and demographically obsessed liberal and ethnic activists.

The former want assurances that there will be millions of aliens available to work at wages that Americans will not - with the ensuing medical, housing, schooling and legal costs subsidized by the taxpayer. The latter can't wait for more constituents in need of group representation who, it is hoped, will someday support them at the polls.

Most cynical of all, however, are the moralistic pundits, academics and journalists who deplore the "nativism" of Americans they consider to be less-educated yokels. Yet their own jobs of writing, commenting, reporting and teaching are rarely threatened by cheaper illegal workers.

Few of these well-paid and highly educated people live in communities altered by huge influxes of illegal aliens. Their professed liberality about illegal immigration usually derives from seeing hardworking waiters, maids, nannies and gardeners commute to their upscale cities and suburbs to serve them well - and cheaply.

In general, such elites don't use emergency rooms in the inner cities and rural counties overcrowded by illegal aliens. They don't drive on country roads frequented by those without licenses, registration and insurance. And their children don't struggle with school curricula altered to the needs of students who speak only Spanish.

For many professors, politicians and columnists, the gangs, increased crime and crowded jails that often result from massive illegal immigration and open borders are not daily concerns, but rather stereotypes hysterically evoked by paranoid and unenlightened others in places like Bakersfield and Laredo.

So, what is the truth on illegal immigration?

Simple. Millions of fair-minded white, African-, Mexican- and Asian-Americans fear that we are not assimilating millions of aliens from south of the border as fast as they are crossing illegally from Mexico.

In the frontline American Southwest, entire apartheid communities and enclaves within cities have sprung up whose distinct language, culture and routines are beginning to resemble more the tense divides in the Balkans or Middle East than the traditional melting pot of multiracial America.

Concern over this inevitable slowdown in integration and assimilation is neither racist nor nativist. It grows out of real worry that when millions of impoverished arrive in mass without legality, education and the ability to speak English, costly social problems follow that will not be offset by the transitory economic benefits cheap wages may provide.

Those fretting about delays in sealing the border along with proposed fast-track visas, millions of new guest workers and neglect of existing immigration law are neither illiberal nor cynical.

But their self-righteous critics may well be both.

Good heavens, even 2/3 of the Democrats think it is VERY IMPORTANT to improve border enforcement and REDUCE ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION! Middle America wants enforcement first!

1) Build the ALREADY APPROVED fence and give us TRUE interior and workplace enforcement!

2) Enforce visa rules

3) No Scamnesty-- there should be NO connection
between a path to citizenship and having come
here ILLEGALLY-- PERIOD!

4) No welfare for ILLEGALS-- PERIOD! We cannot allow Mexico to make America its welfare department.

5) End birthright citizenship unless at least one
parent is a U.S. citizen. Reinterpret the 14th Amendment as it was intended.

6) Pass TRUE reform which stresses immigrants who
can benefit America-- the educated and
skilled. We cannot afford to naturalize the
ILLEGAL aliens-- we will ineluctably morph
into a third world welfare state.

7) Make English the OFFICIAL language-- END OF STORY! Bilingualism will devolve into disaster; no ballots or anything else except in English-- learn or return!

Jorge's broken promises and lies
Presidente Jorge and his ilk have indeed reneged on commitments and artfully lied about their ulterior agendas. This is perhaps what REALLY prompts the unbridled animus among those of us who held our noses and voted twice for him, but are now righteously indignant about a number of things, mainly the war of choice without end in Iraq and the emperor's new clothes Scamnesty effort.

It was not WE who broke our commitments, radically changed courses, chose to spend and grow govt. like drunken 'Crats, engendered a foreign war against the wrong enemy at the wrong time (per many generals and intelligence experts), sold out America with promises to Mexico, or abandoned conservative principles (see the Rx Care For Seniors boondoggle, No Bureaucrat Left Behind, promising welfare and S.S. to Mexico). We don't have "a broken immigration system"... we have instead a feckless Prez who has been criminally nonfeasant in not defending and protecting our border and upholding laws he himself signed (border fence, more border guards, workplace enforcement, etc.).

I live in an ultra liberal city. I have been cussed out on the street for having a Bush sticker on my car. I trusted Bush. I trusted him when he said he needed fast track. Thought he was just working for the safety of our country. Then I found out if was so he could pass these trade agreements to screw Americans without any opposition. I bought it all.

Then there was Harriet Miers. Out of control spending, etc. And the war in Iraq. We are spending billions for "national security" and he is leaving the back door wide open. Real people are dying in Iraq. Mothers' children! Since when is welfare democracy a conservative principle? Who is retarded enough to think that a civilization that likes to behead people on camera and send the images around the world to inspire their comrades is even capable of understanding the principles of democracy! They want Sharia law.

I don't remember anyone coming over and handing us our freedom when we were 13 colonies taking on the super power of the day. Helping them help themselves is one thing, but this is nothing more than welfare democracy and has about the same chance of working as any other form of welfare.

I hung in there with Bush until the day I found about the real plan. That he is working for the destruction of our country. I know what it is to work for a living. I am outraged that he has the nerve to tell us that WE do not want what is good for America? He is supposedly a CHRISTIAN?! I am a Christian and I know the end of the story when it comes to one world government. How can he be going along with this?

I have been concerned for some time with regard to the argument that for the last thirty years or more has sprouted from the left, that we are somehow stronger because of our diversity. I claim that we have always gained strength because of our ability to assimilate multiple cultures into a single American culture. Our strength has always been that "melting pot" Mr. Hanson references. The prospects of the kind of Balkanization that is promised by the kind of illegal immigration we are experiencing can only divide and thus weaken our nation.

...I deeply regret that I had to vote for Jorge Bush. Not because I thought that he was the right candidate for the presidency (I always considered him an imbecile), but because the Socialists (i.e. Democrats) had even worse candidates (a fake war hero and an ambulance-chaser). This moron is totally disconnected from the American people. What is worse is that the Democrats are even further out in fantasy land. Can you believe that Harry "land deal" Reid actually had the cojones to call illegal aliens "undocumented Americans"? Most of them not only don't want to learn English, but they hate everything American, except the welfare handouts, of course. The traitorous, anti-American Democrats are happy to sell votes to illiterate Mexicans, just as long as they keep voting Democrat (as many of them have been for years, even the dead ones).

Mandatory security funding
$4 billion in mandatory security funding is the bribe/inducement/guarantee/whatever.

"What better way to demonstrate that other than to say, 'We're not going to let congressional appropriations dictate this — we are going to put the money up front,'" Kyl said.

What better way? Here's a better way, you moron:
Build the damn fence and develop the employment verification system you intend to use. Turn your 400 page bill into a 40 page bill. Come back to the table when you've got more to lay on it than a promise and a check.

We are NOT between battles here, folks, resting on our laurels until the future day they try again. As we speak Bush is trying to convince, cajole, or strongarm the Republican Conservatives. The bipartisan sleazeballs are back in their "private meetings" and planning to come out with a Bill for which votes will be allowed on only a limited set of changes.

"Everybody's trying to prove that they are willing and able to enforce the law this time, unlike 1986," Kyl said.

Does any reporter have the stones to say, "Hey, Sen. Kyl, which was it last time? Unwilling or unable?"

DON'T ASK, DON'T TELL IMMIGRATION BILL
Thats what it is! As I have said in other posts
on this subject Homeland Security took 8 weeks to
renew my US passport for the fourth time. Just what do they expect to discover about an illegal who perhaps is not even using his real name in a mere 24 hours? This is truly "Don't Ask, Don't tell" because they don't want to know"! The polls should be asking citizens whether they feel this great urgency to pass a terrible bill
or if it is all being force fed to them by the
elected officials and their media bedfellows.

supported Congressional term limits. After FDR was elected for a 4th term- congress decided to curtail Presidential authority by inacting the 22nd amendment. Sadly, most people don't realise that it is congress that holds the majority of power. They make all the laws, have the authority to declare war and are supposed to determine the budget. And yet they don't have term limits. So they same minds that brought you amnesty in 1967 and 1986 are still around to say "We mean it when we say we'll enforce the border this time."

Undocumented
Perhaps if I told the IRS my income was undocumented...

De-Fence
When are they going to build De-Fence.. Oh, I got that confused with "provide for the common defence", & We the People know that is an ancient out-dated concept in our modern civilized world, why would we want or need to build a fence between US and our friendly neighbors [Great Wall of China], [Maginot Line], [Walls of Jericho] [The Presidio] [Tower of London] and other famous forts- Pulaski, Sumter, McHenry, West Point, Duquense, Benning, McPherson, Dix, Ord, McClellan, Stewart, Jackson, Knox, Campbell, Bliss, Leavenworth, etc. Throughout known history it has been prudent to erect barriers and interior arsenals.

My Government Insults Me
A bunch of politicians huddle together and come up with a hodgepodge, unworkable bill, throw the 700-page monstrosity down in front of the rest of Congress, and says "You have a week to get this passed". Word of what's IN the bill gets out to the public (thank God for bloggers) and the protests start pouring in to our elected representatives, who back away from the expected easy approval. The aforementioned bunch of politicians question the intelligence, morality, integrity and compassion of the protesting citizens. They get back into a huddle and dangle $45 billion in front of the Congressmen to try to persuade them to pass the bill despite the protests of those they represent.

I am angry and insulted. And I am afraid of that bunch of politicians, afraid for my country.

What is the payoff for the bunch of pol's who are working so hard to push this bill through? For 21 years they've shown no interest in dealing with border security; the border was going to be taken care of after we passed the 1986 amnesty. Didn't happen. A 700-mile fence was approved just last October but only 2 miles was funded. We were going to hire more Border Patrol agents, but haven't. And these guys want me to believe that THIS bill will REALLY handle border security, honest, just as soon as we rush to pass their bill conferring legality on 12 million people? Tony Snow called people like me "doubters" and "skeptics". Darn right I am! Show me you care about the country, about the welfare of your citizens. Show your concern about the possibility of terrorists sneaking through our porous borders, both north and south. CONTROL THE BORDERS. SECURE OUR COUNTRY. We've put a man on the moon, dammit; we can find a way to build a fence.

Once the flood of illegals is stopped (or at least greatly reduced!) we can debate how best to handle immigration reform, employer enforcement, guest workers, special visas, how to determine who's here legally, how to handle people here illegally, and so on.

But - if those guys in Washington can't muster the will to address border security, we "doubters" and "skeptics" will keep wondering: "Who, exactly, are our 'representatives' representing?"

Rogue Senators are corrupt beyond belief
We Americans en masse have made it crystal clear to these Senators that we are not in favor of any Amnesty bill. All we want is border security, national security and the rule of law.

If this rogue Congress doesn't stop ignoring the will of the American people, they ARE going to cause an insurrection. Mark my words.

People are PISSED OFF because of this Amnesty bill abomination. We want the illegal immigration problem solved, not made WORSE! Americans are smart enough to know a bad deal when we see it, and this one is horrible! It's dangerous for America in every possible way.

If these rogue Senators double their efforts to pass this piece of garbage Amnesty bill, we will triple our efforts to kill it.

According to Duncan Hunter (of CA), that border fence they passed last year IS fully funded. They just won't BUILD it. And they won't build the smaller fence in the new proposed bill either.

They WANT open borders. God save us from these idiots in Congress. God help us, because our elected officials sure as hell won't.

To “Mission accomplished,” “Bring it on,” “Wanted: Dead or alive,” and of course, “I earned … political capital, and now I intend to spend it,” he has added “I’ll see you at the bill signing,” referring to his own ill-considered push for so-called comprehensive immigration reform legislation.

Mr. Bush: you said the government can't find and deport these 12 million or so illegal aliens but you don't explain how you're going to find and document those same 12 million or so.
Neither have you explained how employers who can't find Americans to work for some jobs (below minimum wage) are going to be satisfied when they have all these people become legal and have to start paying minimum wage, SSC taxes, unemployment taxes, workman's comp taxes, state, federal and local taxes.

Never in my fifty years of closely watching government maneuverings have I observed such disconnect between the citizen and the politicians. The pols live in a different world, and have lost touch with the folks who pay them to enjoy such privilege. Probably the only solution is to limit them to single terms via the ballot box. That appears to be the only thing they understand. At every oportunity, throw the rascals out in favor of a new set of rascals. Don't let them stay there long enough to do so much damage.

Are "our men in Washington" dragging their feet on border security because they're convinced that the North American Union and the proposed SuperHighway or SuperCorridor (reaching from Mexico to Canada) will make all of North America one big happy country anyway, so borders won't be necessary? Should the real debate be "Are we rushing our country into a regional political-economic union that's intended to emulate the European Union?" "Are we actually planning to yield our sovereignty to some supra-national group?" "Are we on our way to sombody's 'brave new world'?"

I would resist this with my whole heart and soul. It would be the death of our country and our way of life. I would call for revolution in the streets if I thought my representatives were even considering this.

Washington interprets anti-amnesty as anti-compassion. It's not. How about some compassion for those waiting in line to come legally?

Wish I was
Gosh, wish I was an illegal alien and have so much attention paid to me, have my own litigation engine to serve me, a government that actively courts my citizenship even though I've broken God-knows how many of their own laws. And I haven't even paid taxes or paid them to a false account. And if I am a criminal, gee, I get to stay here.

Well, being that I am a citizen, what does this do for ME? Nothing. What needs to be done?

Maybe we should just get together with Home Depot and Lowes and do it ourselves.

But from what I see in the belt way, we have a bunch of egoists who name buildings after themselves, collect a very nice salary, peddle influence, jobs, and favors, receive benefits and pensions and don't give a damn about their constituents.

They also think we are suckers and ignorant saps who will just go along with the bilge water they peddle. I have grown more and more disappointed with the Republican leadership. But I find the Democrats to be even worse.

Maybe we will have to do it ourselves. When government is unresponsive to the will of the people and its structures have been corrupted for the use of special interests what recourse it there?

Great Article! I just heard on the radio that President Bush is agreeing to make some additional efforts to enforce the border in order to get his amnesty bill passed.
And, as we all know, when President Bush makes a promise such as this about border enforcement, you can take to the bank.
However, despite Bush's last minute lies, the cat is out of the bag. We all know that the corporations and immigration groups are calling the shots. And, that this amnesty is part of the grand scheme towards a North American Union and eventually globalization. And we all know how trustworthy and forthcoming Bush has been in talking about his agreements with Mexico and Canada. Also how about his "Totalization" deal with Mexico making Mexicans eligible for U.S. Social Security benefits.
Now Jorge thinks he can fool us one more time. Bush must really think we are felony stupid.
And another thing that is really galling is that many so-called Conservative Republicans are signing on to this treason. Trent Lott, Mitch McConnell, Lyndsey Graham, John McCain and several others are part of the conspirity. As many pundits have written, passage of this amnesty bill would result in national suicide.

76% of farm workers are US citizens and even if there were not enough, the US has too many farms as it is. She said that everybody living in the western hemisphere was, in fact, an american. The end of our country
This whole immigration legislation is much bigger than just the issue of amnesty. There are other provisions of this bill that aren't being talked about. One is Bush's Security and Prosperity Partnership that was never approved by Congress. Well, this piece of legislation does just that.

Under the SPP, working groups have been "harmonizing" our laws and regulations between Canada and Mexico, and so much more. Some of these proceedings have been obtained through FOIA requests and I have linked to them several times. If you haven't yet looked at these, I highly recommend that all do.

Bush's SPP was derived from the CFR blueprint called, "Building a North American Community". One of the authors is now well-positioned in the State Department. Another is going around touting his idea of a North American Community. What's a NA American Community you say? Automatic US citizenship isn't...
Here's a thought...as of (pick a date), ANY woman who gives birth within the US or in any area of a US protectorate MUST show documentation of LEGAL US Residency. If she can't do that, then her child is NOT AUTOMATICALLY endowed with US Citizenship. I'm sick and tired of "anchor babies".

That child, upon reaching 21 (not 18, enabling it to get a college education at below-market prices), can apply for an expedited process leading to US citizenship. Oh, and we do away with the crap of dual citizenship in the meantime. Ya gotta make a choice, folks.

Why do I pick on the Mother and her residency status? Because, d--nit, 99.9% of the time is very easy to determine who is the mother. The father, not so much.

As an aside,I do always carry my passport with me for ID. When asked for a driver's license as "back up", I've made it very clear that, at least for awhile, one cannot get a US passport without legal, documented proof of US citizenship. The quizzical looks would be humorous if they weren't so pathetic and ignorant. As I've said to the person puzzled by the passport, "Any illegal alien can get a driver's license. A driver's license it worth about as much a bird cage lining material."

As that other Liberal Bill Buckley pointed out here at TH a couple of weeks ago, our unemployment is historically low, and we're running into effects like the jobs being in one state and unemployed people in another. Somewhere somebody must have lost their job to an illegal, but it's truer than ever before that Americans already have better jobs, and if it weren't for the illegals the work that they do would just not get done.

Not about cheap labor
Scamnesty is not about cheap labor. We could have that thru a simple guest worker program with no citizenship.

It is about politicians, who, using accounting methods that don't recognize liabilities, have spent this country into a financial quagmire, spent unsecured social security remittances on pet pork projects, and now face a soon-to-be stagnant stock market and soon-to-be social security retirement debacle. THeir only solution is the simple one. RAise the 3 workers supporting 1 retiree equation by adding eighty million new Americans to an already overpopulated nation.

Yes, they know it's 80 million people (in the long run much more) and they know that crime, poverty, pestilence and economic turmoil will follow, but they are being told that unless they find a way to keep cheap labor AND all their money in this country, we will finally face the financial catastrophe that has been staring us in the face for decades. THey want to sell our highways, our natural resources (Clinton's gold mines) and our ports. Anything to keep those hypnotic campaign contributions coming in.

I would add that not only are the journalists and politicians cynical on this issue, they dare to be offended by our opposition to this new immigration legislation.

They are disdainful, condescending, and contemptuous of the concerns of ordinary Americans, on the one hand, while with the other fist they try to cram down our throats the indigestible slop that this bill is.

And then there are other people -- with blinders on -- seeing ONLY that our country enjoys low unemployment -- who keep harping about how fragile America's economic engine is and if we don't get this guest worker program going (and all the other features of this proposed legislation) that economic doom awaits us.

I don't buy it. Moreover it's very short-sighted -- as Mr. Hanson makes clear in his excellent comments regarding assimilation.

The assimilation issue is real. Here in So. Az I get out-of-state phone calls from solicitors who rattle off several rapid Spanish sentences, even after I have answered the phone saying "Hello;" their corporate bosses KNOW from experience that non-English speaking households prevail down here -- and I'm almost an hour from the border.

What's in it for Bush?
It amazes me that despite the obvious public animosity towards the so-called "immigration reform" bill, Bush keeps pushing it.

I'm not suggesting he govern by polls (the Clinton method), but, sheesh! listen to the people! We don't want the illegals legalized! We want the borders secured and the people in this country ILLEGALLY prosecuted along with those who employ them.

Why is Bush ignoring that?

Pelosi wants to call earmarks "legislative directed spending" (so she can say she's done away with earmarks).

Bush wants to legalize aliens so he can say there are no more illegals in this country. Does any American think that terrorists in this country illegally want to be US citizens? Or that they will voluntarily turn themselves in for a "Z" visa?

Contrary to the statement by one of the posters above that we "must get rid of the idiots in Congress," the sad truth is that there are no idiots in Congress. With perhaps one or two exceptions, and I am not even sure that there are that many, the members of Congress, be they Senators or Representatives have long since abandonded the pretence that they are public servants, who work for and are answerable to the citizens of this country. They only "represent" themselves, and their insatiable lust for power, poliical and personal, and their primary concern is getting re-elected.

The Democrat party looks at the illegals, all of whom are breaking the law on a daily basis, and are thus criminals, and sees millions of votes for Democrats. Criminals are a natural constituency for Democrats, you see. Why else to they want to permit convicted felons to vote?
Republicans, if there are actually any left in elected office, which I doubt (plenty of RINOs, but no real Republicans), see low-wage labourers, for their natural constituents, business and industry.

The fact is that both parties, the Demicans and the Republicrats, see the illegals as a good thing for them. Interestingly enough, only one party is actually correct.

If the current Administration, and the current Congress succeed in passing the treasonable amnesty into law, it will truly destroy the Republican party. Yet, upon serious consideration, this might not be a bad thing. I am not sure that there really are two parties, as I alluded to above, and it seems to me that, although I voted for a candidate whom I thought was a Republican in the last Presidential election, what I got was a Democrat. It just took him a little bit of time to reveal his true colours.
Many others have advocated term limits, and voting imcumbents out of office after a single term, that is, never re-elect anyone. I have another idea, and with each passing day, I become more and more convinced that it might work. Simply do away with elections, and draft people to fill the offices to which we now elect people.

Think about it. If you are a citizen, over the age of twenty-five, and do not have a criminal record, or a history of mental illness, your name goes into the pool, as it does with the military draft (currently inactive, but you still have to register.) If your number is pulled for a seat in the House from your state, you serve for two years. If it is pulled for a Senate seat, you must serve for three years. If it is pulled for President or Vice-President, you serve for four years. After your term, in whatever office you were drafted to fill, is comleted, you will be out of the pool, and never have to serve again. Your employer must keep your real job open for you to return to, and, as you will have social security deducted from your salary, there will no longer be a need for all those Congressional and Presidential pensions, which are luxurious beyond any in private business and industry. And, for the McCain-Feingold, "we have to get money out of politics," crowd, it spells the end of campaign financing entirely, so there is no opportunity for corruption or influence buying.

No campaigns, no constant blather from candidates, no special interests influencing candidates, because no one knows who will be drafted, until it happens. Wonderful!

Consider that this is the end of career politicians, which would be a huge benefit to all of us. And, do you think that the results would be at all worse than what we have now?

I see that Pres. Bush is throwing us a bone using border security as bait. I realize that it has been one of the main issues of this bill. I am a skeptic that anything conservative of this bill will never be inforced with a liberal Congress and Senate. All they want is amnesty and a golden pot for those hard working lawbreakers. Not everyone coming in wants to persue the American Dream, follow our laws and assimilate into our culture. Of course there are others who do want these things. I saw Linda Chavez last night on Fox News amend her position and apologize for calling us racists and anti-Mexican bigots. She said she was angry when she wrote her (May) column about this bill ands says now she understands our fears about this being a repeat f the mistake made in 1987 and simply thinks we should avoid making comments in opposition to such legislation which could make us appear as if we are racist.

Why is it that the politicians do not get the points their constituents try to make on issues such as this? Because for the most part being a politician today is no longer about serving your fellow citizen and your community or nation anymore. It is now about serving yourself, obtaining power & fame (as a celeb-itician), and using your service in office to position yourself in a way to financially benefit yourself and your family after your term is up.

We the people who oppose this so called immigration reform bill are not uninformed, nativist, racist, anti-immigrant radicals. We want what is best for our nation. We want controlled immigration which doesn't impose a harsh burden on the tax paying citizens of this nation. We want immigrants who will assimilate into our culture while at the same time bringing with them the best of their culture. We want immigrants who want to be Americans, not Mexicans (or any other nationality) that work and reside in America.

If we as voters do not act to take back the control and show these politicians who they work for our nation will be doomed to the same fate as the great republics and empires of ancient history.

This issue should be our wake up call. It is not too late to act. Get involved. Be active. Register as an independent if need be since the 2 parties are no longer what they were 20 years ago. Run for office yourself, even if only in local or state level offices.

Most importantly do not think your vote is a wasted vote. Many of the 2006 races came down to tens, hundreds, or thousands of votes. Every vote counts, even if who you vote for looses you have done your part to make your voice heard by making the margin of victory smaller than it would have been without your vote.

Like your idea. Commonsense. But it's a matter of interpretation of the constitution, and that interpretation has largely been that anyone born here is automatically a citizen.
It could be interpreted otherwise, but there's a long standing tradition that would probably necessitate an amendment. Of course rights can be ASSERTED that aren't in there (like abortion), but I think it would be hard to change it.

I saw a clip of President Bush on this issue of Scamesty and what he said could not have been more of a slap in the face than his statement we are raceists.

In the clip when asked a specific question Jorge stated, "Thats not going to happen in my country." That statement sums up what Jorge believes. He would disagree and tell you that the dislocation caused by the artificial supression of wages (and transfer of the money to health care and crime fighting) is removing the incentive for those industries to create labor-saving machines to increase productivity so that the fewer workers would be paid more.

You are getting cheaper produce (or whatever) and paying for it in higher health care costs, crime costs, closed hospitals, and the opportunity cost to those engineers and skilled workers who would make the machines. The net long-term result will be good manufacturing jobs exported, and idiot jobs retained. Your choice.

Read this, Dude, and then tell me that the Constitution guarantees automatic full citizenship to kids "delivered" on the US side of the border or shore. Ain't so, 'cause these folks who drop their kids here have no allegiance to this country...and that lack of allegiance to this country is a major component of the over-all immigration debate today.

The first sentence of the 14th Amendment says:

All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside...

Of course, there has always been the tortured interpretation of "subject to the jurisdiction thereof" clause.

These folks who drop their "anchor babies" don't give a rat's buns about this county, its heritage, its values, its traditions, its freedoms, its culture or its contributions to the world. And the least important thing to these people is becoming "subject to the jurisdiction thereof."

As others have noted, it would take some major political backbone for any politician to "carry the water", so to speak, to propose an amendment which would state clearly, "If you're born in a area of US jurisdiction and your Mom isn't a legal US citizen, and thus subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, you aren't a US citizen, either."

Oh, I think I just discovered a problem with that sentence. It's written in ENGLISH!

If the Mothers of "anchor babies" really cared about their kids and their kids' future, they would put a value FIRST OF ALL on following the law, their kids education, learning and speaking English, and doing all they can to assimilate.

And for those who think that we need to sacrifice our national sovereignty so that the rest of the world won't be mad at us, any and all of the airlines that fly internationally would be delighted to take your money in exchange for a one-way ticket to any of those places you choose...just so it's out of the US.

I agree but keep in mind that President Jorge just passed a bill-(before we could see it)-that allows the office of Presidency to declare Martial Law any time that he deems it necessary. This is, in fact, the opposite of the truth. I was a liberal once, and now I'm a conservative, and I'm FAR more concerned with the welfare of my neighbors now than I was when I was liberal. I TALKED a lot about how concerned I was, back when I was a liberal. Then I became Christian, and began to learn how many of the problems I blamed on others were in fact my own problems. As I began to address these, I gained GENUINE compassion for the needs of human beings (as opposed to the SELF-SERVING, FALSE compassion I expressed as a liberal). Now I do a lot of things to help the less fortunate around me, where I used to vote Democrat and pretend that that constituted doing good deeds for the poor.

This has got to be one of the most incredibly ill-informed analyses I've ever read of anything. I would say "You can't possibly be serious," except I not only have heard psycho-babble like this from liberals before, I used to generate some of it myself (I say this to my own shame.)

A) My core belief system is at least an order of magnitude better developed and informed now, as a conservative, than it was when I was a liberal. I also have a better work ethic, work harder at staying informed, work MUCH harder at correcting my own mistakes, and am much less prone to condescending to people of other cultures. Why? Because when I was a liberal, my self-esteem was based on how smart I was, and I could scarcely afford to admit not knowing something. As a Christian and a conservative, I can easily afford to admit ignorance, and allow others to relieve my ignorance; so, ironically, I'm much better informed, and much more amenable to ideas from others.

B) The opportunity to travel does not fit handy, political/philosophical stereotypes. The reason most Americans haven't left America is that it costs a lot and you have to go a long way; the US has two large oceans around it, and most of us live a good 400 miles or more from the nearest foreign border.

C) How many of your personal friends are full-time missionaries, who actually live and work among people of a culture different from their own? I've known perhaps a dozen folks like this, and they're a marvelous source of ACCURATE information about other cultures that I'm willing to bet you've never availed yourself of once.

You're a bigot, and you're criticizing people about whom you are deliberately ignorant. You would do well to learn from the nearest Republican. But I seriously doubt you'll ever do that.

Why is it that every time I hear GENUINE hate in a post, it's coming from a liberal?

Great logic there, rocker, old bean. "You don't want illegals", therefore "you don't like it here?" You actually believe that's a sound logical syllogism? Have you ever taken a course in Logic, by any chance?

And "We don't want your type?" Oh, I GET IT!!!! You think you're immitating a REPUBLICAN!!!

Except, no Republican has said anything remotely like that since, oh, I don't know, 1965?

So, you're doing a credible immitation of hate -- but the only person who hates that way is YOU.

Ironically, I've heard the very same sort of silly immitation of "conservative hate" on the topic of race hatred, and the only place I ever hear real race hatred these days is from liberal writers, talking about conservative blacks.

Come on out of the 1960s, son, the world has changed a great deal since you last actually spoke with someone who believes differently from you.

I hope you noticed that the Bush-attended fundraiser was a bust. What was the take? Only 60% of last year's? Bush is to the Republican Party what kryptonite was to Superman. Herr Decider taunts the American people with quips like, "see ya at the bill signin" speaking about the treasonous Kennedy amnesty bill, S.1348, that the people fought down last week. That doesn't go down well with the base.

At the fundraiser, I understand, the delusional cretin announced that the Republicans will take back the House and Senate and keep the presidency in 2008! Bush doesn't give a fat rat's posterior for the Republican Party or even this Republic! All he cares about is his "legacy" -- merging the USA with Mexico! And how better to accomplish this task than by granting amnesty to 20 million Mexican invaders (along with a few million Asians, Central Americans, South Americans, Africans, Middle Easterners, oh and a few thousand Europeans, to boot).

What a legacy: The destruction of the Republic of these United States of America. Wow! What I guy! Must make all you bowing and scraping Senators feel as proud as the Roman Senators did when the mad Emperor "Little Boots" made his favorite horse a Senator of Rome.

Interesting idea. Not practical, but a good first step. People may improve it till workable solution is found. Everything we have in our civilization originated from a crude idea sometime.

It is obvious that the system now in place is not serving American public well. I believe the motto of the elected officials today is: every Congressman for himself.

I have already mentioned one day in 1939 when two dictators concluded a pact of friendship and cooperation, with secret protocols allowing Hitler to attack Poland. Hitler was very happy to start the aggression knowing that Stalin will help; Stalin was happy to delay Germany's attack on the Soviet Union by directing it toward the West. Add British idealist/pacifist government; American isolationist Congress; French republic permeated by the Communist propaganda -- and you will have the recipe for disaster. The rest is known.

Can we trust our government? For all its rhetoric, I, for one, still waiting for an answer to one or two simple questions:

Why to clean up hotel rooms do Mexican workers need a path to an American citizenship or a legal status? Can a hotel maid still do a good job without legal document in her pocket?





Texas recruits teachers in Mexico
VDH says correctly that journalists, teachers, etc., are rarely threatened by cheap illegal alien labor.

But it is happening already.

School districts in Texas, where I live, recently held "job fairs" in Mexico - to hire Mexicans to become public school teachers in the USA.

Why?

Because of the sudden influx of Mexicans, and other Spanish-only children.

These are jobs that Americans would love to do - go to any College of Education and you will find a surplus of Teacher Candidates. Born and raised right here in the USA.

But we pass on them. 'Cause they don't speak "Spanish."

Therefore, Texas Public Schools go to Mexico to hire some Mexicans to do jobs that the taxpayers thought were for Americans.

The number hired is relatively small - maybe less than 200.

But in my view - even 1 is 1 too many.

And by the way - when the Mexicans were asked why they wanted to teach in the USA - they replied, "so I can help children from MY country (Mexico)"

NONE of them said anything about love of liberty, love of America.
NONE of them said they wanted to become citizens of the USA.

Also - with enough Spanish-only people - then the journalists will be out of business. No more English readers.

People - we have to crush this bill.
Then - we throw out the bums.

How did it come to this
Every action creates an equal and opposite reaction. Look at this King size mess of 12 or 20 million illegal aliens. Why are they here? Many say because business wants cheap labor That of course is always true but it not the complete answer. Others say the illegals are wanting to make more money than they can make back home and then carry it back to their native country. Also true but not the root cause. As usual the answer is in the numbers. Though we do not have definitive count the estimates bear witness to what I believe is the underlying cause of 12 to 20 million illegals. That would be abortion. With an average of 1 million plus per year since 1972 the number of young men and women taken out of the work force would start to be noticed in the mid eighties (1986). If enough people (maybe 100,000 or so) emailed Sony, Time Warner, GM, Ford, Microsoft, GE, Procter and Gamble and about five other conglomerates, and said that if Scamnesty passes, they aren't going to be sending any money their way for the forseeable future, the republicans and some dems might rethink their strategy.

Michael, have you even read the Heritage Foundations work detailing the financial cost to Americans of the illegal aliens already here? Robert Rector has shown that each of these families, 4.5 million households containing 15.9 million individuals, pays an average of $10,000 per year in taxes while consuming $30,000 per year in benefits and services. This $20,000 per year deficit, which comes out of the pockets of American taxpayers, adds up to 89 BILLION dollars per year. Over 10 years this cost to taxpayers adds up to 1 TRILLION dollars. Over a lifetime, it costs American taxpayers 1.1 million dollars to support each one of these households. These figures are based on the 2004 census. No Border Fence -North American Union
We know that no matter how much money Congress allocates for border security, it will never happen.

We know about the Superhighway and the North American Union.

We know that Congress is blackmailing the American public into passing this horrible Amnesty bill by holding the border fence hostage. If those turds had any intention of building that border fence, it would have already been built.

If they cared about the future of this nation, Congress would WANT to build it. But clearly they don't. There will never be a fence because it would defeat the whole purpose of their North American Union. A union Americans have NO interest in and will fight tooth and nail.

Congress is playing deadly games with us. And anyone who thinks they are sincere in any way, is naive beyond belief.

We must pay attention to what Congress does and DOESN'T DO... not what they SAY. Because talk is cheap.

Perhaps we will get illegals to do their job....they would do a better job at a much lower cost. Isn't that the theory?

I am so sick and tired of Congress that I have been forced do something, so I have founded Voter Imposed Term Limits. The American people must be made to understand that they control Congress not the other way around.

The Congress of today is pure theater. No reality, all smoke and mirrors for the audience. The only part that is real is the total dedication to REELECTION. The job is so great no one wants to give it up. Power corrupts and they have absolute power over our lives.
Voter Imposed Term Limits will, through inventive use of all Media Forms and Forums, give the American Voter a way to simply, easily and with certainty limit the term in office all federally elected officials.

The really nice thing about Voter Imposed Term Limits is that we can do it without the need to even ask Congress for anything.
I believe that a new Unwritten Rule is taking shape in the mind of the American voter, be they Democrat or Republican, simply put it goes something like “6 YEARS AND OUT”.

I agree with you that abortion is the number 1 cause of our present dilemma.

Had we the untold millions of PEOPLE who were snuffed out in the womb here instead, today, to participate in the workforce (replacing our now aging population) there'd be very little demand for cheap labor from Mexico.

God punishes the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation . . .

Enough is enough
I am a generally calm person who is not prone to violence but I have reached my limit of understanding and patience. I am headed to my local gun dealer to purchase the tools I feel will be required to take my country back from the traitors who masquerade as my political representatives. I suggest everyone else do the same. It has become clearly evident that the only way to preserve our nation will be to rise up in armed protest against those that are attempting to dissolve our soverenity into the North American Union. I have been trying to warn people about this for almost 2 years. For 1.75 of those years I was regularly flamed and accused of wearing a tin hat by 95% of the people who post on this site. I did not allow that to discourage me as I knew then like I know now this issue is way more important than my feelings or ego. I am glad to see many of you have finally taken the blinders off and can now see the truth. I guess it is true that if you really want to hide something, hide it in plain sight.

Where are the web sites for us
We all want to impose term limites now and make sure that the people we elect listen to us...But where are the web sites that constitute this principal? Its one thing to talk about it but another to do it..We need a web site for people to petetion for Congressional term limits..Another site for Imigration/Amnesty despondants..another web site for New World Order and Security and Prosperity Partneship despondants web site and another for all the other junk stuff we oppose web sites..Or better yet..Maybe one person can have the insight to incorporate all this as a Government watchdog site that deals with all the issus so we can do 1 stop shop and stop issues..But this is the same thing that always happens..too many people who want too much exposure for taking action wont cooperate..No...No way Im opn my own and I have the insite...Wake up and listen-you idiots..The US wants you to be unaffiliated cause even if you had 50 million americans that supported your stance ...LOL>.its broken up between 2000 sites so that there is never enough support to stagnate them..We have to have 1 sitwe for all to deal with all the issues so we can all have a voice as 1 and not 2000. May God Save Our Republic
What this country needs is a massive lay-off of Senators and Representatives. Evidently the only way to get their attention is to vote them out of office. Representative government to them means to represent their petty personal political interests. Both political parties need an overhaul with baseball bats, just to gain their attention. Secondly, after a hearing check, they need re-education to understand the real meaning of "the will of the people." For some reason they think it means the will of the senate, the will of the house, the will of the president, the will of the RNC or DNC, or all of these. They have gotten way off track because "We the People" let them. Let us all correct that mistake. Pray and vote!

Time for a reckoning...
Our government is out of control. They no longer care what We the People want, nor do they care about the Constitution and the rule of law.

When are we going to learn that the further we allow our government to stray from the Constitution, the further our country slides into socialism? Yet, we keep electing the very same types into office, year after year, somehow deluding ourselves that things will be different.

Have we given up on the Constitution altogether? I hear things about it being outdated; some have said it's just impossible to follow in today's world; others have said our Founding Fathers couldn't have foreseen the "globalism" deemed necessary today.

Is this what we believe? If so, why don't we just burn the thing and be honest about it. If we honestly don't think it should be followed and are quite willing to give our public servants excuses for not following it, why on earth do we still have them take an oath of office to preserve and protect it? Is it just a mere antiquated custom at this point?

Personally, I think our Founding Fathers knew darn well what they were doing. The principles they laid down are still applicable today; we have just allowed ourselves to be talked into thinking otherwise, or quite frankly have been lulled asleep. I took a few minutes tonight to read it again and it's horrifying to see how far we have ALLOWED our government to stray.

So in between our phone calls to our reps in D.C. to tell them to vote NO on cloture, maybe we should all think about the direction our country is going and whether it's wise. For me, I think we need to reinstate the Constitution and kick anyone's butt out of office who has broken their oath of office. Let the de-lousing of OUR government in Washington, D.C. begin! Don't ever forget that this was supposed to be OUR government. They were never to be our masters, but instead, our servants.

The set of guidelines and principles laid out for us in the Constitution are timeless. If we truly want to restore our Republic, we'd better get busy.... while we still have a Republic to restore.

Excellent points. I have written to my Congressman about these many times. I have even suggested that anyone in elected office who violates the oath of office be impeached, not only a President, but Senators, Representatives and especially members of the Judiciary. The Judiciary has violated the rights of the people so many times that most folks think the Judiciary has the final say instead of the Constitution. Many members of the Congress have taken their cue from the Judiciary that the Congress can do whatever it damn well pleases. The idea that the Constitution is a living document, to be changed at the whim of the Judiciary or the Congress, is an outrage. Wisdom died many decades ago when the American people sat by while being lulled into a sense of well being by the socialists. "We the People" have many trials and much work to do [with God's help and guidance] before we can correct decades of abuse by the government. Let us hope that it is not too late and we are up to the task.

If anyone cares to get to work on this, I suggest you start by educating yourself on the Constitution by reading and studying the book, "The Heritage Guide to the Constitution" by The Heritage Foundation, Regnery Publishing, Inc. 2005, but especially a reprint of the 1864 book, "The Christian Life and Character of the Civil Institutions of the United States" by Benjamin F. Morris, American Vision, Inc. May 2007. Both are excellent primers to understanding the ideas and ideals of the Constitution and where it all came from.

Still, the caller's promoting the name "American" to describe everyone in this hemisphere surely testifies to the insanity and idiocy of the brainwashed public. Worse yet, it reveals their TRAITOROUS nature, and the LOW REGARD THEY HAVE FOR THEIR CITIZENSHIP.

1. Enforce existing immigration law and step up border security, including "the fence."
2. Issue biometric ID cards for all legal aliens.
3. Enforce strong penalties for employers who hire illegal aliens (which will result in self-deportations).
4. Require law enforcement agencies to verify legal resident status during all encounters (traffic stops, etc.) Detain illegals and pass them on to ICE asap for immediate deportation. No more "detain and release!"
5. Demand US English for all government (local, state, and federal) communications--publications, voting ballots, websites, etc. (Multilingualism is a colossal waste of money for taxpayers.) Banks, public utilities, and corporations/businesses should also be encouraged to discontinue "Press 1 for English" telephone systems and bilingual services. Ask GW to void Bill Clinton's Executive Order 13166.
6. Address past and current erroneous interpretations of the 14th Amendment, and seek retroactivity. Petition the Supreme Court, or via Constitutional Amendment, or...?
