Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

President Barack Obama's first presidential news conference was performed feebly by the once-ferocious White House press corps and shrewdly -- if deceptively -- by the president. In the six years I did communications on former President Ronald Reagan's White House staff, I don't recall a single news conference in which there were no follow-up questions, no challenges to anything the president had said recently, no assertions of fact that the president was challenged to deal with. In fact, I don't remember former President Bill Clinton, either, ever getting a full 45-minute prime-time news conference pass.

Yet Monday night, all the questions but one were of the "please, sir, could you tell us how you plan to deal with x?" variety. Only Major Garrett of Fox News raised even a slightly embarrassing question: What was Vice President Joe Biden referring to when he said the administration had a 30 percent chance of failing at some initiative? And I must confess that if I had been the vice president, I would not have been happy with the president's answer, which was, in essence: I don't know what Biden was talking about, but that sounds like him.

It can't be good that the president is making his vice president the public butt of his snickering after only three weeks in office. Not that it is Biden's fault. Along with a fair amount of blarney, Joe Biden also makes more honest and candid observations in an afternoon than many politicians make in a lifetime. One comes away from a conversation with Biden with at least one truthful nugget.

The same cannot be said for President Obama. Both Monday night and usually, the president offers his audience one of the finest verisimilitudes of sincerity and manly vigor this side of an old Laurence Olivier performance of "Henry V."

One has to listen closely to spot the straw men and general bunk that carefully -- indeed, it would seem, instinctively -- are laced into his answers. While he repeatedly said he was willing to negotiate with Republicans on the stimulus bill, he pointed out that some of them wanted to do nothing. Well, perhaps there may be a few who want to do nothing. But Republican leaders in both the House and the Senate are proposing their own very large stimulus packages that, using President Obama's economists' own methods, would create more jobs faster than Obama's version would. In fact, according to the study, it would create 6.2 million jobs, compared with the president's plan's 3-4 million.

Now, whether the president's plan or the GOP's plan actually would create that many jobs, no one can know for sure. But for the president to leave the American public with the powerful implication that the Republicans are not worthy negotiating partners because they just don't want to do anything in the face of the crisis is a particularly sordid bit of rhetorical manipulation.

Mind you, he didn't lie. There are a few backbench Republicans who propose nothing. But as the leadership, backed by the overwhelming majority of GOP members, is proposing big plans and is trying, without success, to engage in negotiations with either the president or his congressional party allies, the president willfully misled, by implication, his public.

In another statement that can't have made liberal Democrats any happier than it made conservative Republicans, he contrasted his reasonable self to both liberal Democrats who measure education success only by how much money they spend and Republicans who want to "blow up" public education. As the family friend and educational partner of Bill Ayers, who actually did blow up public buildings, the language was a little cheeky. But more importantly -- and more shrewdly -- he grossly mischaracterized both his opponents and his allies to make himself look like the only decent man in Washington.

As he patronizingly says (over and over again), it has taken Washington a long time to develop its bad habits and it will take time for those in Washington to get over their partisanship and ideology. But by gosh and by golly, good-natured optimist that he is, our plucky president will keep trying to hold out the hand of reason and cooperation.

Our president has let it be known that he is an admirer of Abraham Lincoln's -- as well he should be, as are we all. He should take the time to read Old Abe's speeches and public letters. Honest Abe was exactly that. He would make his cases with meticulous and honest presentations of facts. He would describe his opponents' arguments honestly and fairly and then knock them down by genuine reason harnessed to a profound sense of morality. Lincoln wasn't fast and clever; he was slow and honest, and he carved out a place in the pantheon for the ages. He also noted that "you can fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time." He thus left his newest admirer at least two lessons for a successful presidency.

Clever President?

Obama's list of acceptable news agencies

I noticed that Obama called on the "Huffington Post." Did he call on TownHall?

let me share an anecdote with you
when i was a very new doctor, i encountered a sailor who had suffered a brig door related incident involving alchohol and generous amounts of stupidity. the injury involved a very narrow based long tissue flap, which involved the entire palmar aspect of his thumb. i said, i bleeve he needs a hand surgeon. sent him to a hand surgeon, and the surgeon wrapped him loosely in a bandage, and advised, change bandage daily. nothing else. so when able, i inquired of another surgeon what that was all about. answer, when curculation is tenuous, everything you do is harmful. leave it alone, and let it survive if it can. sometimes nothing is the best therapy. for you townhall trolls that cant think, i will quote hollywood, "when nothing is all you got, sometimes it is a cool hand" there, trolls, u get that? its from hollywood, so it must be true. so now we have the very, extremely, incredibly, unbelievably new, naive, incompetent, loony president trying to save a very tenuous economy. will he leave it alone and allow it to survive if it can? you can bet the farm, the ranch, and the homestead that he wont.

Adoration!
That says it all.

But please, Tony, lay off the 'blarney' references when it comes to Biden. Just make him out as a doofus from Delaware. We Irish guys are trying to forget.

The Slick Snake Oil Salesdude
It seems to me he learned his craft of Street Urchin Politics of manipulation, intimidation, and misrepresentation well from his ACORN mentors. Oh my, what have we done?

BIDEN DOES MUNICH 2009
The administration of Neo-Chamberlain (Barack Obama) launched a bold new era of U.S. diplomacy at Munich last week where VP Joe Biden told the Chancellor of Germany that the U.S. "will be willing to talk" to the Jew hating, Holocaust denying, genocidal Islamonazis of Iran. Do you not see the awful irony and the gathering danger of war due to weakness and folly? Keep in mind this is the same Joe Biden who opposed Ronald Reagan's military buildup (which spent the Soviets into bankruptcy), and supported the moronic Nuclear Freeze Movement which wanted to halt the modernization of our strategic nuclear forces that were in serious disrepair.......

has anyone else noticed
that Obama has taken to prefacing his answers to most questions with, "As I've said repeatedly." In most instances this assertion is not true. It allows him to change a position without admitting that he changed it. As Blankley says, he's very clever. One has to listen closely. He's a top-notch wordsmith, but when he's finished speaking he leaves the impression that he said nothing of substance.

change
Obama was indoctrinated and instructed to change, campaigned on change, continues to remind us that he is about change and that he won. He never defined the change, he ddidn't have to and he doesn't have to now. If you want to make it your business to find out what the change is, you can. But his messages today are not to the electorate, his messages are to those who mentored him and put him where he is. If any traditionalist did not take the phrase "the ground has shifted underneath you" as a warning, they had better take it as a statement of fact.

question
After a question bo would look at a list he had and say the name of the next questioner, say 'Joe Blow, you're next. Where are you?'

Q: If the questioners were chosen BEFORE the press conference, would it not follow that the questions might have been vetted too?

Just asking

The Obama Disaster
President Obama is a lawyer and as a lawyer he uses rhetoric to deceive and befuddle his audiences. Let's judge him by his actions.

1. He overturns Bush's decision to refuse funds to international groups whose family planning policies include abortion.
2. He allows Nancy Pelosi and the radical Democrat House members to put together a "stimulus" bill chock full of earmarks and payoffs to Democrat constituencies.
3. It looks like he will allow the Democrat Congress to restrict drilling offshore and in the Western U.S.
4. The fact that climate change is even on his agenda during one of the biggest crises in our country's history speaks to how ideology is controlling policy plans and not actual events.

What do we call someone who ignores the facts and lets his emotions and ideology control his actions? Ans: Stupid, and Dead Man Walking as far as any hopes of reelection.

Shrewd? Shrewd?
The way EVERYONE in the press - including the conservative press - throws accolades at this guys every times he opens his mouth just astonishes me.

Gee - he tells us something that's not true. And that's SHREWD because - oh, no - someone might believe it.

But somehow Joe Biden isn't "shrewd," because he actually says things that ARE true. And so he's discredited.

The problem isn't with the SPEAKER. The problem is with the LISTENERS. If the media has decided not to question anything Barack Obama says, that doesn't make him "shrewd," it makes them STUPID. And complicitous in his deceit. Which makes us SCREWED.

Obama's Cleverness = Sociopathy
He's a con artist.

The cult members can't see it.
I don't even think he's a good orator. That blankness in his eyes ruin it for me.

And I don't buy that he's so intelligent even though he and his puppetmasters (Soros and Axelrod) ran a brilliant campaign. I want to see his SATs and LSATs. I'm not saying he's stupid but we need to factor in the affirmative action he benefitted from.

Our SHREWD President
I have to give credit where credit is due . . . . . I can say one thing for President Obama . . . . He is shrewd . . . . deceptive.....but shrewd!

It is absolutely shameful that this president uses our "economic crisis" to lead us to his Marxist utopia. He uses words so cunningly, one has to listen very closely to see his true ideologies and agenda.

Personally I don't want an Oscar-winning performance from a president who seems inclined to mislead the American people. . . I want truth and candor, common sense and consistency.

But then again, like anyone who dares to criticize the "savior", I'm just a small town, gun-toting, Bible-thumping, bitter and frustrated American who has no apathy for people who aren't just like me! (Obama, April 2008, San Francisco).

Useful Idiots
Obama's payoff to those who elected him has only just begun with this pork-laden bill. Obama is also quite disingenuous when he points out that prior government policies brought the US into this recession, yet he voted FOR these very policies. It is appaling that we can no longer expect an active media to point out these glaring hypocracies. It is absolutely astonishing that the prior century of political and economic Socialism failures, not taught or widely ignored in textbooks of high school and college campuses, and worse, goes unquestioned by the fawning White House Press corp & liberal media. Why in the world would the President of the US and Congress want to create economic policies that favor this horribly flawed ideology? His far left economic beliefs, (shaped by Rev. Wright & Bill Ayers) his foreign policy naivete, his willingess to deal with terrorists, his overwhelming lack of experience and absolutely no leadership skills will soon prove worse than the dismal presidency of the woeful Jimmy Carter. I expect even less from the "useful idiots" at CBS, CNN, NBC, et al.

the news media loves barry !
he goes to the press because they just love him!president bush had to dodge the shoes flying his way every day!the press wanted to tripp him up!the liberal press, will cover for barry.liberals like liberals!rich conservatives should of bought up more net works years ago!

Clever President
What grates at me is when Obama bloviates that we're in this mess because "of the policies of the last eight years", implying that Republicans, tax-cutting, and conservative ideology were the causes of our severe recession.

Well, it wasn't conservatism or conservatives who created and severely enforced the Community Redevelopment Act and forced banks to abandon all underwriting laws and make loans to the un-loanable, artificially driving up housing values. It wasn't conservatives who protected the systers at Fannie and Freddie Mac by putting up bureaucratic barriers to true reform within those GSEs; it wasn't conservative-hacks within Fannie and Freddie who bought bundles of these shaky loans and put the entire U.S. housing market on economic quicksand. It wasn't conservatives or conservatism who created the exquisitely complicated financial instruments on Wall Street and sold them on the world market, polluting assets throughout the world; it wasn't conservatives and conservatism that encouraged people to live beyond their means, borrow themselves into financial oblivion, and hope to get bailed out by government.

No sir, Mr. Obama, it was liberal, feel-good legislation, coupled with non-market driven low interest rates and human nature that led us to this mess. Unfortunately, the designers of this are the ones who are now asked to remedy what ails us.

I predict the recession will last as long as Democrats control both houses. If the Democrats hold power in '10, '12, and beyond, I'm afraid to say we'll be in the tank for the same timeframe. It's the 1930s all over again.

In The Tank
The MSM has been in the tank for Obama since day one of his campaign. They even threw their fair-haired girl Hillary over the side for this man because it was decided that it was time for an African-American president. Women such as Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin can wait.

I'm still surprised that Hillary took the Secretary of State job. I figured she would decide the Senate gave her more power. SOS doesn't seem much of a consolation prize for losing the presidency.

Anyway I digress. I don't see us getting any useful information from the MSM. We better be glad for Fox News, conservative talk radio, and the Internet. And be prepared to fight like the devil if the Fairness Doctrine rears its ugly head again.

Debunker
Your post lives up to your name! Spot on.

What Did We expect?
Well, we should expect exactly the sycophanic behavior we see from Obama: after all, his total experience, his epistemological reality, is in 'working' with desperate, confused, mob-like, credulous people in his community-organizer capacity where, after dispensing the spoils of government grants, he comes out worshipped - and politically supported, of course, in the end.
The part we should not expect, is the abject credulity of the press in failing to ask questions of Obama that are probing or that cite his representations that are contradictory or factually false.
Perhaps we should expect it too, though, just as we expect the press' denial of left-leaning.

Terry
Yes, as a former journalist, I see every evidence that Mr. Obama's staff are controlling the press conferences. It's not unusual, btw. Rossevelt's people let it be known to reporters that if they reported on his disability, they'd no longer be welcome in the White House. As it had nothing to do with governance ability, they didn't report on it.

It's likely that they're doing this because Mr. Obama does not comfortable without a teleprompter. It's also likely they're doing it because they have a certain information set they want covered and no deviation. They know the polls are saying people are angry over this spending boondoggle, but still not angry at Obama for it. If he mispeaks, that all changes. His staff know that.

However, the degree to which Mr. Obama's press conferences are being controlled is alarming. I'm glad to see that one reporter spoke up and out, but expect him to be removed from the WH press corps. Whether Fox will be allowed to replace him is the big question. The simplest way to marginalize the more conservative media and give strength to the more liberal media is to kick the conservative media out of the White House and claim they were being unruly.

the Community Organizer Corollary
The Kenyan will thrive in a country where one need only fool *enough* of the people *enough* of the time.

He bought this last election. What makes any of you think he won't succeeed in buying the next one? When you have the unlimited funds of the Middle East behind you, what's to stop you? Congressional oversight? His own party, which benefits mightily from his chicanery, will always look the other way. An adversarial press? I laughed while I typed that. The Justice Department? My stomach turned while I typed that.

You want to know our future? Talk to a Cuban about Castro. Talk to a Chilean about Allende. Talk to any Eastern European. From them, you'll learn what you'll have to be doing.

Playing the Public For Dupes
Tony, when will you expose how the angry "far left" power-mongers have manipulated our economic crisis to seek enactment of legisaltive initaitves that otherwise would be shouted down if the public were informed of what was happening? And the President set it up, masterfully. Step One, bang away on the crisis and need for speedy action. Step Two, give free rein to the raging power-hungry leftists in the House, all the while diavowing any involvement ... ho, ho. Emmanuel knew precisely what was being developed -- it had eben outlined in the HHS-Secty-designate's early book (he said tuck the health reforms into a spending bill to force passage despite opposition!). Step Three, crow about non-partisan fervor, as if you believed it -- only way to get two or three Republicans in the Senate. Make sur4 the Senate bill doesn't deviate from the House bill in key new fderalism-centralism programs, like putting everyone's medical history onto Federal files so errant doctors can be disciplined for prescribing duplicate orders, etc. Step Four, ssream wolf aboutthe size of the probelm to keep attention focused on spending numbers and not on the substance of the new federal-control programs. Meanwhile, diavow any authorship of the federalism control programs in acse the public wakes up to how the Obama Administration will build power being execised from the top down (we know what's better for Ameirca!) than from the bottom up (let hte people decide). What's astounding is that so few are willing to show how treacherous our new President really is. Glad we have a Harvard-trained thinker at the top. Wish he saw better the need to cut back on trying to run the country from Washington.

tony
did you say anything when the former gay porn star jeff gannon was called on by dubya. i didn't think so lol.

roy in IL: never heard of him
I had never heard of him. I bet President Bush didn't know him either.

You do. That tells me more about you than you probably intended.

Conversely, how do you feel about the Deputy Attorney-General designate? What a client list! Hefner, Guccioni, Flynt: the porn publisher trifecta! Anything controversial there for you? Or do you own stock?

I can sum up BHO in one word --
ARROGANCE.

To DESERT RAT
You said it! Right on! We need a tee shirt saying it also.

Arrogant bias elitist
The community activice residing in the White House and operating out of the Oval Office should have the beer not just with Hannity but with any other conservative just as he does liberals. There was to be fairness, with respect and transparency.

Hatred by elitist
Look at Obama hate list (1a) babies; abortion and condoms (1b) elderly; no health care with a couple of comfort pills. 2 Christians preaching the word of God, worshipping the word of God, and living the word of God.
The acceptance of sexual deviancy as the normal way of living by the Obamanation has left this nation facing the wrath of God. To all those that do not believe, your suffering will not be any lighter. To those deceiving believers God promise there is a special place in hell for you.

Wrath of God
Obama can not escape the wrath of God, he can right now stop the places the word of God can be spread. He calls himself a Christian and wants that kind of discrimination for the purpose of the lifestyles of the murder by abortion coalition and the gay coalition that do not want anyone to know about sexual deviancy.

Our Snake Oil Salesman
Obama’s first presidential press conference was as unpresidential and ridiculous as his first appearance on TV – Arabic TV – in fawning, shameful apologies for the U.S., and his snake oil salesman tour of Florida shortly after his press conference. The best stories to come out of the Florida show were 1) about a 19-year-old McDonald’s worker who got it seemed two one-day gigs with no benefits - the concern he presented to Obama – but the man-boy was as thrilled as he was when he got a PlayStation for Christmas, and 2) an unemployed lawyer in Labelle, FL who wanted deliverance from the Messiah of a house, as I recall, and maybe a job too.
