A Truncated Presidential Honeymoon?

Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

It was fairly common chatter from congressional Democrats in Washington during the autumn months of the presidential campaign that while Barack Obama was almost certain to win, in 2009 policy would be driven from the House speaker's office. While I didn't doubt that the congressional Democrats would try to lead Obama around by the nose, I rather doubted that Obama would cooperate. When a fellow gets himself elected president, he is inclined to want to try his hand at some real governing.

And while I predicted in a postelection November column -- against conventional wisdom -- that Obama might well have a fairly short honeymoon, I confess I am surprised at how soon, how vigorously and how publicly the congressional Democrats are flexing their muscles.

In the past two weeks, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Sens. Dianne Feinstein, Jay Rockefeller and John Kerry and Rep. Barney Frank, among others, have fired significant shots across President-elect Obama's bow. Moreover, as well reported, Rahm Emanuel and Vice President-elect Joe Biden were informed a few weeks ago that they would not be permitted to attend the weekly Senate and House Democratic Caucus meetings -- contrary to the custom with Republicans, who invited Vice President Dick Cheney, Karl Rove and a few other senior aides to their caucus meetings.

Why, after waiting for years (arguably decades) for such complete political power, are the congressional Democrats so cranky and turf-conscious so early?

On the one hand, it would seem that congressional Democratic resistance is increased the more Obama asks for big change quickly. He may well not understand how hard it is to move big, detailed legislation through the congressional process. Obama's expectation that Congress could authorize and appropriate almost $1 trillion in only three or four weeks was never realistic. It is hard, even in Washington, to get a majority to quickly agree to spend the same trillion dollars.

His speech Thursday clearly was seen as a shot across the bow of the congressional Democrats to get on with his stimulus package quickly. While I have noted some Republican complaints about Obama's partisan slap at Republicans' bad policies these past eight years, it is the Democrats who seem to have their noses out of joint from the speech more than do the Republicans.

Consider the sequence: First, Obama proposes his stimulus plan in general terms; then the Democrats disagree with important pieces of the bill; then Obama goes on national TV and tells Congress (i.e., the Democrats) to hurry up and get the job done; and then Sunday morning in The Washington Post, there is a report of increased Democratic resistance to Obama's policy leadership. And Obama hasn't even been sworn in yet.

The media have been focusing on how wonderfully Obama is ahead of previous presidents in selecting appointees and introducing domestic plans during his transition -- which is true. But what really may be happening is that his early substantive policy stands combined with his early appointments of Cabinet and sub-Cabinet positions (for each appointment, there may be a half-dozen or so Democratic senators disappointed that Obama did not pick their candidate) may be truncating his honeymoon with the legislative branch of government.

In other words, every presidential personnel and policy decision makes a president more enemies (particularly in his party) and undermines his party's unity. By getting started early on personnel and policy, Obama may have started the inevitable decline of presidential party unity early, as well.

Moreover, while his quick and peremptory policy announcements have ruffled some congressional Democratic feathers, his backing away from pre-election liberal stands may be ruffling other Democratic fowl.

For example, on Sunday television, Obama was asked to respond to this Cheney advice to Obama: "Before you start to implement your campaign rhetoric, you need to sit down and find out precisely what it is we did and how we did it. Because it is going to be vital to keeping the nation safe and secure in the years ahead, and it would be a tragedy if they threw over those policies simply because they've campaigned against them."

Obama responded: "I think that was pretty good advice, which is I should know what's going on before we make judgments and that we shouldn't be making judgments on the basis of incomplete information or campaign rhetoric. So I've got no quibble with that particular quote. I think if Vice President Cheney were here, he and I would have some significant disagreements on some things that we know happened."

Notwithstanding that last sentence, I suspect that liberals bristled when they heard Obama essentially concede the possibility that his campaign opposition to Cheney's national security policies (implicitly including waterboarding, CIA renditions, Gitmo, the Patriot Act, NSA electronic surveillance, etc.) was just "incomplete information or campaign rhetoric." It was all a little vague, but conceding that Cheney -- the devil in liberals' minds -- may be right must have been off-putting.

It seems that the first -- and pre-inaugural -- bites out of the presidential hide are on Obama's left flank.

Red cats everywhere!
Obama once referred to one recent, blown-up story as: "catnip for the media"...Well the felines are well fed on Townhall...Blankley offers us the 20th column on "truncated honeymoons"...Of course the media is in constant mischief mode..Everyone knows that the well-covered campaign is over (well, everyone besides Sarah Palin) and there's only so many stories that can be written about the Middle East. So, naturally the "Conservative" media has entertained themselves by writing dozens of stories about the "rift" between a Congress and the next President who has not even been sworn in yet!..Of course, that's irrelevant to the byline. Let's face it, Obama's Presidency has fallen apart! If you don't believe Blankley, they're scores of other columnist who have, or will, write the same thing...Meow!

Pelosi and Reid are weak
The weak need to flex.

It is actually good that Mr. Obama has Pelosi and Reid to snipe and carp. Imagine if he had a Jim Wright to deal with? Mr. Valvoline would have been a worrisome alternate power center for a new and young President. With Pelosi and Reid and any that carry their water, Mr. Obama need only concern himself with key scratches to the Presidential Limo.

Mr. Obama may find his relationship with the 'little leaders' on the hill to be one that resembles Rome and Avignon during the Papal schism. If so, Pelosi and Reid won't have a prayer of a chance to trump Mr. Obama; not even a voluntary one.

Obama's
wife said, he is America's 'RULER', so Congress had better get used to that.

They won't really allow that because they are aware that he hasn't the brains to understand what his job entails.

Spay and Neuter Congress , PEBO
It's going to be an interesting show watching NAZI Pelosi and Harried Harry Reid and ilk fighting over scraps of power like rabid dogs.

I have to hand it to PEBO, if he's waking up to the real threats against the USA by radicals. But Baffoon Biden isn't and is calling for withdrawls to our peril. Well, that's to be expected from the gaffe master.

The besat that could happen is the fighting might stall or even erase some of the rhetoric which will benefit all. Enjoy the show.

Fight the Eric Holder nomination by emailing, faxing, and calling your reps! Tell them:

Put a hold on Holder.

Either way,
whether they work together or work against each other, it looks like its gonna be a long 8 years.

Pelosi and Reid
Pelosi and Reid are easily the least able leaders of Congress in my lifetime. Pelosi has only a fake smile on her side. She was elected soley because of her girlish grin and not on any substantive measure. If you look at her background since being in the House nothing perks up as a leadership quality. Reid continues to be the best example of the Peter Principle on record. Practically all the statements made by him as a leader have been either dead wrong, foolish, or ignorant of congressional mood. With leadership like that, the cool, deliberate, and articulate Obama will have no trouble prevailing against them. They don't have the vocabulary or speaking ability to schmooze the congress, much less the American people, that Obama has. Obama will beat them every time. Let's hope Obama is right.

I thought the World Loved Obama

Liberal Meltdown Ahead?
If PEBO doesn't control Congress his presidency will be a disaster. One of George Bush's major failures was that he didn't veto spending bills and rein in Congress by appealing to the public.

Obviously, the Congressional powers want Obama to govern from the left and it looks like he would prefer to govern from the middle. What are the odds that willful liberals in Congress will piddle away their powers with fractious squabbles among themselves?

Reality Check:Barack Obama
Let's face it, politicians mostly say anything to get elected. The problem that President Obama
has is in the main stream media itself. The "liberal bias" that had him compared to everyone from St. John F. Kennedy, to Jesus that was so blatantly obvious, made expectations from a large part of the American public terribly unrealistic. Congress indeed expected to "lead him around by the nose." Afterall, whenever his future positions were examined and found wanting, Obama flipped, adjusted, changed due to polls or focus group responses. NO wonder Congress views him as amenable. GEE, guess what? The fellow may have more backbone than anyone thought. Add to that his desire to be successful, and the country might actually benefit from his presidency, in that he (like many doctors) wants to do no harm (?) Well, at least this whole mess will be interesting, as it seems our new President is showing himself to be unpredictable. Jerry, Asheboro, NC

Pending disaster
"Obama's wife said, he is America's 'RULER', so Congress had better get used to that."
That is the scariest statement I can imagine.

my 2 cents
prez-2-b bo has

1) a democratic senate (with or without al francken)

2) a democratic house

3) an embarrassingly friendly media

which leads to

4) no excuses - NO HONEYMOON

Great piece Mr. Blankley!/Joltinjoe Fl.
Hey Joe..,I agree with your take on Pelosi and Reid.

I think you were too kind to the Queen of Hearts. She's long past girlish grins.

Just For Show
The Congressional Dems will raise their pointy heads to make sure that they do not lose face time with the media. They and BHO are essentially on the same page, and they want to make sure that everyone knows they are in charge. This will go away shortly and things will get back to only bashing the middle and conservatives.

Honeymoons
Honeymoons are for marriages. Politicians get no such thing.

Truth Hurts?
These are solid observations by Blankley and most of the comments here.

1) Reid and Pelosi know Obama is nothing more than a community organizer with a good spinmeister. They believe they know better, and perhaps they do, because the Constitutional reality is that a President "proposes," and Congress "disposes". It's just a plus Obama is associated with numerous scandals to be used as leverage.

2) The mush-for-brains who propelled this empty suit into the Presidency aren't going to spend a lot of thought about WHY they are doomed to disappointment. No one's paying their mortgage, no one's paying for their gas. And Obama's already told them they cannot expect the gravy train he promised. They already FEEL thrown over.

3) The world community doesn't love us any better because the ones who threaten us hate AMERICA, and they don't care if you're an jacka*s or an elephant. Obama's not even sworn in (although it's hard to tell that from his actions), and Iranians are burning, defacing and running over his image.

4) People normally operate in their self-interest, and if you want to see the natural progression of liberalism just look at what's going on in the California Bay area.

I just cannot imagine what TruthHurts? is proud of or what he/she sees in their future. Denial is not just a river in Egypt.

the messiah vs congressional dims
the voters were clueless concerning who the messiah is. However those veterans in congress knew exactly what they would be gewtting.

The messiah is another shallow politician more intent on pleasing those around him than taking a touigh stand on any issue.

The country got a real insight into the devious mind of the stupid pelousy when she ventured into foreign waters and announced her foreign policy, which quickly got shot down

But both land deal and pelousy, while mentally limited understand hardball politics. The messiah may hav e waded through the corrupt politics of chicago, pelousy is the daughter of a corrupt poltical boss who ran baltimore while treating young nancy as a princess used to getting her way on everything

Pelousy rules with an iron fist and the messiah had better get used to puckering his lips and applying them to the anal pore of the congressional leader.

The messiah had better realize who is the real power in the capitol and it sure ain't him

Honeymoon? I think more like annulment.
Many, including me, have always believed that Barack Obama was nothing more than a front man and that his strings were being pulled from behind the curtain. The problem is that Barack Obama won the race for president and his ego will not allow him to continue to be manipulated from behind the scenes.

When you throw in the media, who believe they should be credited with Obama’s win and that he should bow to their “journalistic expertise” as to how it should be and those honeymoon Roses are covered in thorns.

From the fracas with Blagojevich and the resulting flap over his pick to fill Obama's vacant Senate Seat, to a cabinet pick that was under federal investigation, his treasury pick with serious income tax issues and a choice for AG that would be disqualified if he were a Republican, Obama is tripping and stumbling in his grand entrance.

Now, the war in Israel could expand to Lebanon, Iran is stepping up its saber rattling rhetoric, North Korea is again being obstinate, Russia is fighting the “Gas Wars” and our own economic stability is creaking at its foundations. Obama, in spite of what he believes, is no messiah. No one man has the power to resolve these critical issues with good vibes.

Barack Obama was a calculated risk for the Democrats. They believed they could control him from the shadows and blame his every misstep on George Bush. The problem, Bush will no longer be president, Obama will, and the Dems will control both houses of congress. This political marriage is already on the rocks, there won’t be any honeymoon, just a quick annulment.

Obama's Brave New world.
Sun-Times: Journalists Being Shut Out by Obama
By Warner Todd Huston (Bio | Archive)
January 12, 2009 - 21:43 ET

According to Sun-Times columnist and long-time Chicago journalist, Carol Marin, journalists at Barack Obama news conferences have come to realize that Obama has pre-picked those journalists whom he will allow to ask him questions at the conference and many of them now "don't even bother raising" their hands to be called upon.

One wonders why journalists are allowing this corralling of the press? Would they have allowed George W. Bush to pre-pick journalists like that? Would they meekly sit by and allow themselves to be systematically ignored, their freedom to ask questions silenced by any Republican? Would journalists so eagerly vie with one another for the favor of Bush like they are Obama's?

Honeymoon?
Those of us who maintain significant concerns about a leftward leap may come to value Ms. Pelosi and Mr. Reid. It is often conflict among "belivers" that exposes the true nature of any agenda or intention. Obama has, to be kind, skillfully thrown bones to both the moderate center/right and the left with his appointments so far.

Congressional leadership is clearly smacking their lips in the expectation that they will reverse the trend to executive power. They clearly chaffed at the lack of it.

Congress combined with the Tzars for everything will create major tensions and turf battles.

I welcome it.

His approach to Tzars

Lo-Bama's Honeymoon
Lobama's honeymoon will not be a trip to a deserted island for privacy's sake. His honeymoon bed will be crowded. Michelle will have much competition for 'The One's' attention.

Ghosts of his criminal past in Chicago will dog him every day. He cannot escape it. He may have left the Windy City behind, but he could not leave his past behind.

Obama - Off to a Bad Start
Many things are not going well for That One, the Messiah so far. Is it reasonable to expect they will get even better if he actually gets to serve as POTUS?

Reality check
Campaigning is one thing; but now O has won, the hard realities of world and national positions have been made clear to him! He also has on his back Mme Cluck & the Reptile, 2 more incompetent boobs it would be hard to find. Our salvation will be in the turf battles fought between the White House and the Congress.

WILL ROGERS QUOTE

"I belong to no organized party, I am a Democrat".

Ain't it the truth? Nothing has changed since 1935.

GOP wants Obama and nation to fail
they care about themselves, not our country. Dems care about the country and the people.

CHOLE - PLEASE RETHINK THAT STATEMENT
that "the GOP wants Obama to fail and only care about themselves, not the country".
Have you not heard many Republicans state that they want Obama to succeed because they care for this country and others say that Obama is now their president and will support him.

I have heard this expressed by Republicans many times since November 4th. We all have strong opinions about our political parties and some words are strong sentiments of what we believe to be right. Even George Washington often got mad at those "damm politicans" that he had to deal with during his terms in office.

Come on, Politics and football are Americans' greatest entertainment.

Shrill Railing Against Everything Bush!
In our comfortable society where people are not agitated enough by their "horrible Government" to even inform themselves as to who
the Vice President, Speaker of the House or Senate Majority Leader are, but consider themselves informed enough to decide whether we are complying with International Law or the Geneva Convention (or where Geneva Is), readers never seem to learn to laugh at their
Ignorance and treat it accordingly!

Do you count yourself among those who irrationally respond to the volume rather than the quality of their protestations?

If you don't laugh, you cry

I am sitting here laughing my keester off, as I listen to the news. Timothy Geithner, President-elect Obama's pick for Secretary of the Treasury, failed to pay $34,000.00 in self-employment taxes.

I am sure that Obama was unaware of this problem with Geithner, as he was unaware of so many other problems with the people surrounding him.

Didn't know that...

...Rev Wright was a racist and America hater

...Father Michael Pfleger was a radical nut

...William Ayers was a domestic terrorist

...Tony Rezko was a scam artist

...Rob Blagojevich was a grifter

and now, he didn't know that his pick for the top financial advisor is a tax evader.

As I said: if you don't laugh, you cry.

MOUNTAIN ROSE - GOOD OBSERVATION
I'll share that laugh with you because my husband and I have put all of these facts and people together that Obama was not aware of.

Most people who have no awareness of what is happening around them are diagnosed with an Attention Deficient Disorder. Now he is president. Do you think he knows that Isreal has attack Hamas because of the 5,000 rockets that Hamas fired into their country for the past year. Or did he forget? Just somebody in the neighborhood.

Just how much will Obama not be aware of that is going on around him for the next four years?

Reba
No, I don't think GOP wants Obama to succeed. They want to try to do a Newt type of recovery in 2010, so if Obama is doing well, that won't happen. So sad that politics are more important to them than our country.

Give it a rest Chloe....
I hope he does succeed, I voted Libertarian. But I will tell you what. I live in the people republic of Austin, TX and work with alot of liberal who feel very free to talk about their political beliefs. Their main concern is what is in for them, not what is best for the country. They want free stuff.

That's because she's had so many face lifts, her head is so squished tight everytime she blows her nose or passes gas, more of her few

Chloe
You must have been sleeping the past fourteen years if you presume that the GOP has placed politics ahead of the national interest. When the GOP won Congress in 1994, they kept the promises they campaigned on...including the line-item veto that allowed the President to balance the budget. They placed the nation's interests ahead of their own (working with the President when necessary...vis-a-vis welfare reform and foreign policy) and were rewarded with being vilified in 1996 and 1998.

Fast forward to 2006, when Pelosi/Reid took over Congress and set about to undermine the economy and our efforts in the war on terror. There were no positive accomplishments from this group, and they never failed to place their personal polticial agenda ahead of the national interest. You can guess what happened in 2008...

If the GOP was interested in placing politics ahead of the national interest, that train left the station a long time ago.

Oh please
I'm a rich lib who wants what is best for the country. Some of what I think is best for the country is not best for me. If we went to a national health plan, if I could not opt out, I would be unhappy, but in the long run, since we'd end up making sure all Americans of all ages and incomes get healthcare, our country would be better off. We need to fix social security, and lots of other programs. I've lived in Europe and I like the way they have public transit and good schools. Are things more or less rationed? Sure, you go on in school only if you perform. So what? We're letting idiots attend college now, only those with the best test scores should be in college.

CHLOE: how much is enough?
Ever stop to think that the reason we have some problems in some areas is NOT because we don't spend enough on it?

We rank 3rd among industrialized nations in per capita spending on K-12 and rank in the mid-30s on reading comprehension and math. The problem aint money...it's the fact we've politicized
K-12 (The Teacher's Union is the #1 campaign contributor to the Dems, Left wing political activists view K-12 as an experimental toy for social engineering, we've got our head in the sand for failing to call "BS" over the failed culture of the black underclass).

Yeah, I'd like schools like they have in Europe too. But we won't get them as long as we've got the Dems around.

Good point like we spend far more than any other industralized state on healthcare but the results have us near the botom. Conservatism of the last approximately 40 years has clearly demonstrated that it is completely imcompetent but very expensive. Healthcare and education are classic examples of conservative failures

CHOLE
I have also lived in three different countries in Europe and was also impresssed by their school system and their excellent mass transportation systems. Each time I returned to the states I also wondered why we could not do the same here. But with time and some reflection on reality I came to realize that first of all, our school systems would again have to be allowed to disciplined students and not teach under the threat of a lawsuit. There is chaos is most of our classrooms because teachers have very little authority. In European schools they have all of the authority with support from the parents. I taught conversational English in one Eastern European School and the students came to school with the awareness they were there to learn. Secondly, European schools separate their schools from their sports. I know many schools in most states would never consider giving up their football, basketball, track teams, marching bands and pep squads.

As for the mass transportation systems, 1) fewer Europeans own automobiles and their gas is much higher than ours, 2)our cities and homes are too far apart to allow us to develop an adequate transportation system sililar as European's for all our residents. We have school bus transportation for students, which very few European schools have. European Students use city transportation because villages are close together and it is easier for them. I got into the habit of walking more to shop and run errands when I lived in Europe as all Europeans do and enjoyed doing it, great exercise. But here I live over 2 miles from a store. Could we ever get Americans in the habit of walking again?

Deadbeats you want to talk deadbeats??? It is your conservatives who used up everything infrastructure, social investment, everything and didn't improve it or even maintain it. Oh yes while you did that you ran up a huge bill. Guess what deadbeat - time to pay our bill

doofus the loser
getting a bit testy eh doofus. Guess you been to the bar and drank your courage.

But as usual all we know about you is that you new ambition is to be the messiah's monica. But never fear, we hear he likes the company of males and you need fight off will to gain access to the love of your life.

Perhaps your messiah can fully explain why deficits are no problem under the dims. But in your case he will have to provide the messiah need only provide booze and paper and crayons and then even you will understand that dim deficits are great for the country

doofus the dimwit 2
we have already seen the results of lbj's great society.

$45 trillion has gone into the great society programs and we see that under the dims and their minions in the teachers unions that inner cities have growing rates of illiteracy approaching 70%

There is the break down of the family structure because the dims pushed welfare and absentee daddies rather than encourage marriage and stable families.

We see the results of affirmative action where ability means little but having dark skin is now used to determine promotions and entry into programs.

The dims have been utter failures and still fools like the drunkard doofus is singing their praises.

But I guess we can look at you and see how someone as mediocre as you had a govt career. If you would have had to actually compete in private industry, the results would have been a minimum wage job but you could still live in the slums of scranton

JFK
Hopefully, Obama will be like JFK.

Kennedy was abysmal at getting bills through Congress. His only legislative accomplishment was a labor bill.

Obama appears to be off to a good start to follow in his footsteps.

mountain rose
Right because the GOP is full of such righteous and 'upstanding' folk they NEVER have negative or racist or 'radical' or any of the other b.s you were spewing! And last time I checked neither Rezko NOR Blago were 'associates' of Barack Obama's anymore than YOU are but god FORBID there be a political scandal involving a white male and a black face doesn't get thrown under the bus at e-v-e-r-y attempt. Despite how ridiculous and worthless the story grab that rope and head for the nearest media hig-tech lynching and you snots STILL bitching about Jeremiah Wright is laughable to the point of stupidity! It's not enough apparently you hypcorites bully the hell out of Barack Obama to distance himself but you still complain about his 'racist' views as opposed to WHO exactly?!! The 'founding fathers' who owned slaves or the columinsts for this very publication or George Wallace,David Duke,Strom Thurmond,Jesse Helms, the congess memeber who was in the Klanetc..

mountain rose
And want to talk terrorist?!! How about ALL the ones Reagan freely not ONLY associated with but broke bread with, made deals with, invited to the White House and so on. Or how about a Afghani rebel group that was funded with AMERICAN DOLLARS from the CIA headed then by 'W's' daddy and had as a member a young Osama bin Laden. Where's all the 'moral' grandstanding on THAT ms. 'voice of outraged dignity'?! Or on the drug dealers, drunkards, cheaters, swindlers, and other nefarious lowlifes YOUR former presidnet 'associated' with. And if ANYONE has their hand out looking for 'free stuff' it's these greedy corporate fat cats who now expect us the taxpayers to bail them out of YET another finacial mess of indulgence and wasteful spending!

Tony
Do you understand the "Metaphor";Nero fiddled, while Rome burned? If you do,then you understand why no "Honeymoon" is available. Americans are in a "Losing" posture;jobs, health care, homes, dreams, etc. To be frivolous, in the wake of all this, would be irresponsible. Don't you think?

This ain't Jimmy Carter...

...and Pelosi and Reid are not Bob Byrd and Tip O. They only have the jobs because no one else wanted them. The top Dems were already fundraising for Pres runs. The current congressional leadership is the second string, the B squad. Obama will use them for political canon fodder, and they might even be smart enough to know it--hence the snippiness so soon.

They'll take all the blame for his failures, lose at least one house at the mid-terms and be gone into the history books.

And Katie Couric will bear a big-eared child that the entire press corps will in unison swear looks just like George Will.
