Who's Going on the Presidential Honeymoon?

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

I was thinking about what we traditionally call the postelection "honeymoon," of which President-elect Barack Obama is now in the second week. But what exactly is meant by the metaphor? As a starting point, I looked up the word in my well-worn Oxford English Dictionary: "The first month after marriage, when there is nothing but tenderness and pleasure (Samuel Johnson); originally having no reference to the period of a month, but comparing the mutual affection of newly-married persons to the changing moon which is no sooner full than it begins to wane; now, usually, the holiday spent together by a newly-married couple, before settling down at home."

First of all, who are the parties on the honeymoon? Is it the president and the public, the president and the opposition party, or the president and Congress? Are the media supposed to be on the honeymoon? If so, in what capacity? Are they reporting on the developments of the honeymoon like paparazzi, or are they participants? Is it ethical for journalists to be sweetly "relating" to a politician, or should they stay at arm's length, so to speak? Are we all on the honeymoon together, and is it voluntary or mandatory?

I have been on only one honeymoon, with my wife 24 years ago last week. It was very much voluntary, and I didn't need to fake my tender love and devotion.

But whether as an opinion journalist or as a member of the opposition party, my attitude toward the president-elect is utterly dissimilar to what I experienced on my real honeymoon. I didn't choose him; I don't trust him (if he knows of me, he doubtlessly reciprocates such sentiments); and I don't look forward to a long relationship with him.

What we all are really doing right now is biding our time. After all, when President-elect Obama hired Rahm Emanuel to be his chief of staff, it was not for the purpose of fluffing the pillows on Obama's and our matrimonial bed. To Emanuel, a pillow is more likely to be used for suffocating an enemy (figuratively, of course) than putting him at ease.

The only part of the metaphor I can relate to is the bit about "comparing the mutual affection of newly-married persons to the changing moon which is no sooner full than it begins to wane." By my calculations, that means that the honeymoon will be over by Dec. 4. In fact, already, my positive passions are feeling rather "wane."

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the references to the political honeymoon metaphor started in 1655, when Thomas Fuller said, "Kingdoms have their honeymoon, when new Princes are married unto them." In 1795, Edmund Burke wrote, "Spain, in the honey-moon of her new servitude." And in 1867, Goldwin Smith said, "The brief honeymoon of the new king and his parliament."

In each of those early examples, the circumstances of the honeymoons are mandatory, begrudging and short. I think Burke's best catches the moment ("the honey-moon of her new servitude").

It is curious how the sexual metaphor -- with all its ambiguities -- is used often in politics. For example, British conservative Benjamin Disraeli criticized Prime Minister Robert Peel for reversing his position on free trade, in the following passage:

"There is no doubt a difference in the right honorable gentleman's demeanor as leader of the Opposition and as Minister of the Crown. But that's the old story: you must not contrast too strongly the hours of courtship with the years of possession. I remember him making his protection speeches. They were the best speeches I ever heard. It was a great thing to hear the right honorable gentleman say: 'I would sooner be the leader of the gentlemen of England than possess the confidence of Sovereigns.' We don't hear much of the 'gentlemen of England' now. But what of that? They have the pleasures of memory -- the charms of reminiscences. They were his first love, and though he may not kneel to them now as in the hour of passion, still they can recall the past; and nothing is more useless or unwise than these scenes of crimination and reproach, for we know that in all these cases, when the beloved object has ceased to charm, it is in vain to appeal to the feelings."

That's how I feel about President-elect Obama's sweet honeymoon words of passionate bipartisanship. I don't expect the sentiment to last past the first tussle. Even now I feel the cold stare of calculation in his eyes.

Actually, I prefer the metaphor of a president's first 100 days in office, which derives from the approximately 100 days in 1815 when Napoleon escaped from the island of Elba, fought his way to Waterloo (where the Duke of Wellington defeated him), and was replaced as leader of France by Louis XVIII.

Whether the metaphor is to sex or war, in politics we can expect sparks to fly. The sooner the better.

President Obama
The longer the honeymoon lasts the better. I agree with Sean Hannity. Given Obama's radical background I just don't trust the smiles and reaching out BS. He's a cold, calculating politician with an agenda. My only hope is that he will be so busy trying to correct the country's economic problems, that he doesn't have time to implement some of his other plans. He definitely wants two terms and will do everything with that in mind. I have no doubt that he is planning the next election already.

How about ANOTHER metaphor....
According to Blankley, the "Obama Honeymoon" should rightly run right through December 4th. Tony's cruisin for a fight...He's drawing the line: "I don't trust him and if he knew me, he would not trust me."....Wow, the POTUS-elect can't be ready for this. Tony wants to "get it on!".....The country has a 70% approval rating of Obama but Tony's not discouraged...The "right track" numbers are already up since Nov 4 but Tony's not having any of it!...Tony Blankley notes that "sexual metaphors are common in politics"...After reading the column, I can see where that could be applicable. Tony wants us to shelve the Honeymoon and get right into Obama criticism. He wants to start this, 6 weeks before the guy get's sworn in!....Let's summarize: 1. Anxiety causes quick and decisive reaction. 2. The reaction is probably not good in the long run but "I'm so excited!" 3.The "reaction" is more of an "over-reaction" but we've already waited too long to get on with it!....Yes Tony, the more I think of it, the more I agree. There IS a "sexual metaphor" that applies to you and your column...I believe it's generally known as "Premature Ejaculation".

Tantra and detente
Take a month or so ... feel the love, ...

As long as Mr. Obama doesn't try to do to the rest of us what he accomplished on his own honeymoon.

HONEYMOON?
The Honeymoon started the day BO started to run for the presidency. The MSM was the partner.

Barry The Teleprompter Messiah....
The persona of "Barry" is a triumph of marketing - a marketing plan by Oprah and Soros, nothing more. He's an empty vessel; he himself doesn't really believe in much.

He's a careerist; an opportunitst. He simply has the gift of gab and like most lawyers, loves to hear the sound of his own voice. Given the financial meltdown in September and the GOP running a weak, liberal republican which failed to interest, much less inspire many conservatives, it's a wonder B. Hussein didn't win in a landslide. And without that plucky governor from Alaska, the GOP would have suffered a much worse defeat. Kudos to you Sarah!

The Messiah's over-riding philosophy is: "social justice", which is code for transferring wealth from the producing class to the under (or non) producing class. In other words, our "cool jazz" president is just a smooth talking version of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.

NO TIME FOR A HONEYMOON FOR OBAMA
He needs to be busy reading up on requirements for his new job, studying every night. With so little past management experience I don't know if 8 weeks will be enough study time to pass the test. Remember Joe Biden told us that the President's office is not for On Job Training.

Golden Rule
What should conservatives and Republicans do now? Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Treat President Obama with the respect you thought the liberals and Democrats should have treated President Bush.

Even when you disagree with President Obama’s foreign policy decisions, especially regarding our troops in the field, remember all those who so opposed President Bush that they said things that were not supportive of America. Support the President for the sake of America, if you cannot openly support his decisions, be silent. Never seem to be the position of not supporting the President to the determent of America.

If you thought it was “dumb” for the Democrats to complain about President Bush’s use of Executive Orders, do not complain about President Obama’s use of them. If need be, disagree on his position, but not his legitimate use of his Presidential authority.

The President is entitled to have the administration he desires. Quietly and quickly approve his nominees for his Cabinet, etc. Save your opposition for when it matters, on the appointment of judges and then only oppose those where you have a real legitimate reason. Remember, just because the President nominated them is not a legitimate reason.

Do not be against something just because the President is for something. Be silent in most opposition and again, save your vocal opposition for the big issues. Be statesmen and women in your opposition.

Regarding the President’s family, if you cannot say something nice, do not say anything.

So remember, do unto the Democratic President they way you wish they would do unto the Republican President.

Get down and dirty
egarding the notion of “Treating Democrats as we want them to treat us.” I would submit that we have tried that and it hasn’t worked. We Republicans treat politics more as a disagreement between honorable and well meaning people. The Democrats treat politics as unrestricted warfare. Even after the experience with Robert Bork, Republicans allowed Ruth Bader Ginsburg onto the Supreme Court without a fight. I don’t remember a similar attitude among Democrats from 2001 through 2007. George W. Bush was trashed, demeaned and attacked from day one but we are expected to leave Obama pretty much alone.

For at least forty years politics has resembled a street fight. Following the Marquis of Queensberry rules when our opponents have discarded all restraint is a recipe for defeat.

REPUBLICANS THAT CROSSED
THOSE THAT VOTED FOR CHANGE IS GETTING A LARGE DOSE OF CLINTON. NOT ONE OF OBAMA APPOINTMENTS DID NOT SERVE IN THE CLINTON ADMINISTRATION. OBAMA WILL BE REPLACING AT LEAST TWO SUPREME COURT JUDGES BUT BOTH ARE LIBERALS AND NO HUMAN BEING OUTSIDE OF MICHEAL MOORE WOULD BE MORE LIBERAL THAN RUTH BADER GINSBURG SO AT WORST IT WILL BE A WASH. THE SECOND SELECTION SHOULD COME WITH ALL THE FIGHT SENATORS CAN MUSTER.

Presidential Honeymoon?
"If you're a good enough organizer, panderer, and BS artist, you can get elected against a truth teller. No one wants to believe reality when they can look forward to 'hope' and 'change' especially 'change' that will energize 'hope' and 'hope' that'll bring about 'change.' Wow! I feel like dancing amongst the daffodils, don't you?" --comedian Dave Weinbaum

B.O. will most likely disgrace himself in the next two years. His very questionable win does not signal the death of the GOP. The GOP is not dead but it needs to reconfigure and appeal to the younger voters without pandering. The young typically gravitate toward the "nanny state" until they “grow up” and they see and get the common sense of conservative values. Religion should not interpose itself in government but its constituents have a right to representation.

LADISNEY @ 12:25 pm "DOWN & DIRTY"
Good post and I agree with you, but with this exception. Our good politicians of days of yorn were also street fighters. Often their differences were settled with a pistol duel, or fists. Alexander Hamilton, our first Secretary of Treasury, died 5 days after a pistol duel. When Thomas Jefferson ran for President, his liason with a black mistress was mentioned in print. Andrew Jackson was in a pistol duel to protect the honor of his wife Rachel, whipped a man with a horse whip once, the press called him a "Jackass", he agreed he was a "Jackass" and thus became the Donkey for the Democratic party.
Harry Truman berrated the press with a few of his infamous expressions when they critized his daughter, Margaret's piano playing. Nothing in politics, nor love or war has changed, it is now thrust into our living rooms via the television a few minutes after it occurs.

Let's return to the yesterdays of our forefathers with the pistol duel. Ten paces, ready, aim, fire!

AHEAD OF HIS TIME, LITERALLY
You know B.O. hasn't even had his birth certificate cleared, his draft registration verified or proved his GPA to anyone, not even a Med record, yet this new unpolished piece of marketing is being compared to Abe Lincoln, FDR, and we are being told about his IQ and what a great Prez he is. The guy ain't even in office yet and may not even qualify should someone actually stop the bull shi* and find this stuff out. I mean he can be a dumb as a box of rocks and still be the Prez, he might be the right age and he might have a draft card, looks healthy enough, hell, he might even have an IQ over 10 but who knows for sure?

Did you dumba** Dems give us a pig in a poke, again?

Warm and Fuzzy
If we know the feelings (on the part of the ones who love Obama)are warm and fuzzy, then we have a chance of landing (back to earth)gently and safely. I have a confession to make: I, too, like Obama and want him to do well, even to win a second term. But lately, I've come to believe that a second term will not be possible if Barack tries to do the right thing(s)--on the economy, on the war, on America's fiscal future. For him to really do right by these epochal issues--is to put down the structures required for a long term recovery of sanity, sobriety and overall health. For him to succeed in thus laying the groundwork for a viable future--he will have to displease the voters vis-a-vis 2012. Change is painful, not pleasant.

Demand Obama PROVE US born citizenship
Act NOW: Demand Obama PROVE He's A US Natural Born Citizen!

Isn't arguing about "Obama's horrendous policies and cabinet picks" a little PREMATURE & PRESUMPTUOUS? He's simply NOT QUALIFIED to be president because he is not a natural US born citizen; and if the GOP were SMART they'd focus on this and ONLY THIS NOW UNTIL RESOLVED!
